As a 30-year owner of several different aircraft, my advice is to NEVER buy a $100,000 plane with $100,000. Instead, buy a $100,000 plane when you have $120,000, keeping $20,000 in reserve.
@@BrainWearmouth personally, I've always banked 50% (so $50k), but that's just me. And I've used that $50k more times than not in the first year. $20k will just keep you flying at a basic level, with some deferred maintenance. $50k will handle most anything in the first year.
@@countryfence8111 Yeah that's more what I thought. I'd also imagine it varies from plane to plane? Newer/better condition is higher capital but less in reserve or cost of ownership?
@@BrainWearmouthyeah pretty much…the saying “There are no deals in aviation” holds true…older planes cost less to purchase but will usually need more upkeep.
Gosh dang it man, you're awesome. I've been wanting a plane my entire life. I recovered from homelessness and severe alcoholism a year ago not even close to having the $ for one at the moment, but having these videos Is super motivational. Not only are the graphics my favorite type of art style out there, the way you talk is like somebody giving purchasing advice IRL and its super enjoyable. Thank you!
Flown a lot of planes at this point. Tailwheels, high performance, complex, seaplanes, slow, fast... And I must admit... the searay was by far the most fun thing I've ever flown. Nailed it with this one.
Its astounding how closely this lines up with my several years of "research" (read: longingly looking at planes on websites wishing I could one day buy one). Mooneys are simply too efficient to pass up, and Debonairs are not as sought after as their older brothers (sisters?) so they make for affordable yet stylish alternatives. Vikings, I would argue, do have some availability in the 65-80k price range with excellent avionics, but you have to look for a while. I saw one beautiful example go up on TradeAPlane for 65k and get snatched up within the week. The challenge with the Viking is knowing who to go to for maintenance, especially with regards to the wooden wings. Overall, I think if I was buying my first ever plane and going for a four seater cross country, manual gear Mooney M20C is as easy as it would get. Plentiful, well known maintenance regiment, and very efficient.
My only retractable time is in an M20C. I learned in Grumman Cheetahs but rented the M20C for a family reunion in Arkansas. Eleven hours of driving one way thanks to little country roads or 5.5 on the Hobbs there and back. It was a no brainer and I've loved those planes ever since. It was magical to get high enough on a summer day to need cabin heat after sweltering in hot Texas summers in that Grumman. Sadly, despite giving my wife the irrefutable argument that you can live in a plane, but you can't fly a house, I'm a home owner. 😢
Sea planes for the win! I'd love to see a guide for glider purchase - they get expensive pretty fast when you're looking at the modern glass ships, and that's without an engine!
The bonanza is an amazing airplane. it has the speeds of a fast cross country platform, the takeoff and landing distance versatility to allow it to land in shorter strips (grass etc) and has plenty of useful payload even with full tanks. I absolutely love flying them too.
A very cool video with beautiful drawings, as in all your content. As a bit of an aviation geek, I'm a big fan of your channel. But there's one small mistake: the manufacturer of the Wilga is not "P2L" but PZL - Państwowe Zakłady Lotnicze (it means "State Aviation Works" in Polish). By the way, could you maybe make a video about the Wilga or the TS-11 Iskra? Or both 😁
aanndd only because you mentioned Velocity :) But seriously, a wider ranging video on this topic than any I have seen out there over the past 3 years... and all under 7.21 minutes...cool.
You mentioned the bearhawk lsa in here, I'd love to see a video breaking down the specs on the various models. Ive been wanting to do a bearhawk 5 build ever since barrows hinter at its release a couple years ago
I love the look and practicality of a (larger, door-having) Velocity over a Cozy.. but the controls are sloppy (cable vs rods) and if you watch any videos of them landing.. they almost always hit hard. Cozys, like Long-EZs have some increased AoA at landing speed.. but the Velocities seem to need to be flown into the runway in a very shallow approach. If you look at Velocity landing videos, you'll only see a few squeakers (several of them are by Velocity test pilots), and a lot of pilots edit their landings out of their videos completely. I've been to a few canard fly-ins and you can see the same pattern in the pattern in person: Lots of Velocitys being slammed into the runway, while the Rutan & Puffer canards display much more graceful control. Cozys are very, well, cozy.. but that actually improves visibility since there's less plane under you, blocking your view of all the peasants on the ground.
Would you consider a video on the Dornier Do 28? It is one of the funkiest looking planes going. Plus, with a name like Skyservant, what's not to love? I'm sure your video would tell us!
M20F is a solid, actual 4 seater. Owned my 67’ for 2 years now and I consider myself a lucky guy to own one. The C is 5 kts faster but good luck putting an adult in the back.
Comanche have great values I am looking at one in excellent condition asking only for 60k, but parts for them are running dry and aren't made anymore, not to mention not much people service them. Mooney M20C would be my pick if I am in the states. If you are in Europe, give Socata Trinidad or the older, slower and cheaper Rallye a consideration. Robin HR100 and SIAI S205 is interesting as well but there aren't too many of them around.
I am partial to a Cessna Skymaster 337G. They are hard to find because nobody wants to part with them. There is one currently for sale in New Zealand. It has been in storage since 2001. STOL kit, new props, rear engine new pistons, the price is only $15,847!
A video I would love to see (it'll be a long one), a breakdown of all good "first time" buyer aircraft. Hour Building/XC/Back Country/Etc. Basically to help new pilots and student pilots (like myself) with that first airplane that would fit our mission.

The canopy is the main thing. When its closed it doesn't look like its in place properly. It doesn't fit nice. Compare it to an RV-7 slider with the canopy closed. Also, the metal to glass ratio and positioning doesn't seem right. It's straight up cosmetics that I'm not crazy for the AA5
