    I did my commercial multi in a DA42VI that was fairly new (the ones with the Austro AE34C engines). Fantastic plane to fly with some really nice single engine handling characteristics. Frankly some of the easiest emergency procedures I've had to learn. It shoots single engine approaches so easily and landings are just butter smooth with that trailing link landing gear. That is if the plane was working. I'd say conservatively I had to cancel about a third of my flights due to some issue with the airplane ranging from ECU faults to composite de-lamination on the wings. Maintenance would do a good job resolving the issue of the day, but something else would always come up. The run-up is really nice and easy, all you have to do is push a button and let the computers run a self check on the ECU's and engines. Fun plane to fly, but even if I had the money I would never own one due to the poor reliability.

    • @lucasbrien5008
      @lucasbrien5008 2 года назад +8

      Was this at Riddle? I heard they had a ton of these issues with the ECU, partially because Diamond didn't design the aircraft well to be operated constantly in a training setting.

    • @michaelhoffmann2891
      @michaelhoffmann2891 2 года назад +3

      @@lucasbrien5008 Seeing as training seems to be the vast majority of use for the 42, that would be borderline ironic. I mean, down here, they're all trainers from what I can see. Trawling through the register there isn't a single one that isn't owned by a flight school. The delamination makes me worry about intense UV issues. Arizona and Australia would/could be killers in that respect.

    Really enjoy your videos! I own a DA42 VI with the Austro engines, and it’s a totally different aircraft than the early model trainer with Thielert engines that you profile here. I would compare my plane to an SR-22 Turbo in terms of performance- the Mark VI versions of the 42 are fast and efficient with excellent range- but you have the added benefit of a second engine for flying over mountains and the Great Lakes. I regularly cruise between 170 and 185 KTAS burning around 14.5 gallons per hour total, and could fly for over 5 hours before running out of Jet A. I could also pull the power back and fly over 1,100 miles non stop. Equipped with radar, oxygen, AC and FIKI de icing, a good used 42 VI will cost $800 to $900k. New will run $1.1M. The specs are very similar to a DA62, but carrying three or four people instead of five to seven. I’d love to see you profile the 42 VI…they’re a fantastic but misunderstood plane.

      A fantastic summary, would love to hear more. You couldn't do a one-hour video could you? :) How comfortable is it actually if you're tall (but not wide/fat)? How is it as a 2-person/full-tanks/luggage cruiser? How is single engine flight and performance *really*, when not done by those semi-pros in the various aviation mags and forums? All those make the 42 and 62 sound as if they fly as easily as a 172 "landomatic", but really?

      As a student A&P mechanic, I personally find it easier weighing, balancing and measuring an aircraft with the Metric system. Since pretty much all measurements are based on the number 10. It can suck working on a Diamond, Airbus or other EU aircraft in the U.S. because those aircraft were built in metric, but typically owned by people who only know Imperial. So it's important to understand how to compare both systems if you own or service a European aircraft here in the States. But I do agree that it is easier for most people to understand the way they were thought. And for most people, it's not even necessary for them to know how to compare the two. So you'd be forgiven to prefer one over the other :)

    • @aleksandrnestrato
      @aleksandrnestrato Год назад +1

      In all fairness, it’s easier to measure (and calculate) everything in Metric.
      Almost all American engineers, let alone scientists, I know of count in Metric, then convert to Imperial. Fun fact 1: USA were the decisive force to make the Metric System an international one. Because of America (you kinda can say so) the world is Metric.
      Fun fact 2: All Imperial units in the US are officially defined in Metric.
      P. S. Airbus A300 (first world’s twin engine wide body plane) was designed and manufactured in Imperial units.🙂

    Hello! You should look into more details on the DA42... There are different iterations of the DA42 out there, and the newest one, the DA42-VI, has speeds of up to 195kts TAS with a fuel burn of 16gph combined. This was accomplished with aerodynamic improvements.
    There are other engine combinations out there, like the Continental Diesel 135/155 engines. Also, there's different TBO/TBR's for the airplanes.
    I work for a distributor of these airplanes and happy to chat about the differences (all of them!) of the DA42

    Love your vids but you killed me on my fave plane here. The range of the DA42 (NG or VI) is conservatively 1225 nautical miles, not 700! They've been flown across the North Atlantic numerous times at 50% power. Actually I think even this original DA42 has been flown across the Atlantic. Pretty cool. 🏀

    • @CompleteWalkaround
      @CompleteWalkaround  7 месяцев назад

      Hi, Thanks. 2 things. First, I never talk about the half power, 10 hours of flying range. Nobody does that and the channel wouldn't be very useful if that's what I posted. I post realistic range speed and loads under normal conditions and normal operation. 2. You can cross the Atlantic with very little range. Scotland, Iceland, 2 stops in Greenland then to Canada is very doable and happens all the time. Ok 3 things, twinstar is very different from NG and VI. Thanks for watching.

    I think you used one of the early series 42s for base, which wasn't clear until the very end of the video. They were indeed criticised for both performance and using those "throw-away" Thielerts. The VI seems to have improved in all aspects - though if you're having problems at 6'2", I'm out at 6'4". I'd read they were snug in the cabin, but that makes a Mooney look like first class in an A380! Yikes. The 42 is really popular for training, I guess that explains why. Now what I want to see is the DA62!

  • @GeorgeSemel
    @GeorgeSemel 2 года назад

    Well, I am kind of dated, I did my multiengine rating in 1976! A Piper PA-23-250 Aztec, D model. I would fly one on a canceled check run early in my career. That was some 46 years ago. The light Piston twin market had the rug pulled out when the FAA changes the Rules to allow Single-engine turbine airplanes to fly pax under FAR-135. For so time you could buy a Piston twin for the price of the flight times left on the engines. I liked flying the Aztec Navajos 310 and 402. The newest airframe would have rolled out of the factory back in 1986 or later. Unless you have a specific need or a lot of income to support a light twin. I would suggest avoiding it. But if you can then well I am biased the Piper Aztec would be the one.

    Love these videos but this one confused me a bit. Not sure what the takeaway of the fake specs was supposed to be. Looks to me like climb is the only different number but then you talk about fuel burn. Shouldn't range be higher if fuel burn is lower? Also why pick this plane to do a video on if the conclusion seems to be that there's no good reason to buy it? Might make more sense to just do a video on one of the more practical versions of this plane and briefly mention that this one isn't worth it in that video.

    • @CompleteWalkaround

      Hi, The M20C Specs were to show that this plane performs like a mid-range single. I chose this plane to do because it was the first of the DA42s, I'll do the others later. I'm not just doing planes that I think are good buys. More planes that people want to buy and ask about. Someday I'll have the whole DA42 set on here and then people can compare and make their own choices. This plane is actually a good trainer. Running it 500 hours a year can make it pretty good deal. My videos are more for owner/operators then commercial uses which is why it comes off not very positive. I've had a lot of requests for this plane specifically, probably because it's the cheapest one when you pull up DA42 ads.
      I appreciate the comment. I have a thing for complete sentences :)

    Why is the imperial ft/m but the metric is m/s?

      Pilots use feet per minute. Folks who just want to know the metric equivalent like m/s.

    Diamond have in fact extended the engine TBO to 2100 hrs, with the 125-02-99. They have also released a third version of those engines but I don't know the figures for that.
    Also, the maintenance benefit of the DA42 is that you only need to do maintenance at every 100hrs, with no annual (except avionics). So it works well in commercial aviation or flight training.
    FYI I work for a light aircraft maintenance company and love the amount of detail you go into for your videos - it could be useful for some of my customers 😀

      Ryan is correct. Same scope, different in that it has to be an IA/rated inspection at a CRS.

    Yup. Cost of operation of a twin for the performance of a C-210. Being a twin means glide ratio sucks means long glider-inspired wings aren't really practical. DA-40 gets a great glide ratio. DA-42 - not so much.
    IMHO the DA-40 (both TDI and NG) are Diamond's best bang for the buck.
    The DA-20 has little value beyond basic flight training, while for that role - it's kinda pricey. Even if you only want 2 seats - there are faster 2-seaters with greater load, range, for similar cost.
    The DA-50 is... very new and, imho grossly overpriced. I mean all certified aircraft are but, still, more than others. And low range. Guess it's for those who wanna fly fast not very far. Sub-1000 mile range for a >$1m aircraft is meh. I mean range of the DA-50 is less than of the DA-40! One can get a beater turboprop and have enough left for a fresh paintjob and new seat cloth for that kinda money.
    Flying under 125 hr/year it's generally more economical to rent than own any aircraft (of the 2-6 seater "proper airplane" kind, not talking about... super-simple experimentals, motor-hanggliders, ultralights and the like).
    Now, that is not to say one shouldn've value peace of mind that you're the only one who's flown this aircraft, and also NOT having to deal with randomness which comes from renting whatever is available at a flight club on a given day. But if one values that AND flyes under 100 hrs/year - that will come at a premium cost.

      210 has better performance, until you have an engine failure, then the DA42 does much much better 😉

    So this is a plane for people who are not comfortable with just 1 engine, but at the same time want a short plane, I don't even look at a twin engine plane that carries less than 6 people.

    i gotta say this video is actually really inaccurate for the aircraft. but you did chose the MOST unpopular and worst performing engine , most have the astros. so you should have went with that. biggest thing is cruise speed and TBO time. so way to go after the worst variant of the da42.

      Yeah I'm scratching my head. I really wanted to know how costs look like with the astros. Plus the fact that they use Jet-A

      It sounds like he's gonna do a video for the other variants as well. It is a little odd though to make a video about this plane when the conclusion seems to be that there's no good reason to buy it.
