So for those asking - Before the written form of Japanese was standardized in the 1900s, multiple variations of each character existed. The standardization of the current Hiragana character set made it so that there was only one version for each mora. Thus, all the strange variants that were left out became referred to as Hentaigana.
Hentaigana is a big wall to reading old original biblio for student of old Japanese literature. The most old age, Japan didn't have character for writing. Then after, japanese knew Kanji from China. Firstly, people used directly kanji for writing their pronounce. One used his favorite kanji for writing pronounce, and another used different kanji for writing same pronounce. It is say this caused the fact that old kana has severall Jibo. Jibo's meaning is mother of a character.
Back in the history of Japanese writing, they had thousands of variations for hiragana syllables. In 20th century Japan selected standart hiragana chart and all other variations called as a Hentaigana (variant kana). And nowdays there's 2 two obsolete hiragana syllables exist and they're in W column. They're not using nowdays and that's why in modern japanese hiragana chart you'll see only three symbols except fife: わ [wa] (ゐ [wi]) (ゑ [we]) を [wo] ん [n]. There's no symbol for [wu], you can use う [u] for it...
Most of the hentaigana shown here look exeedingly difficult to balance correctly with all those squiggly lines. I can't say I'm sorry they have fallen out of common use.
as someone who is currently learing it, it's actually alot more complicated than shown in this video. there are lots of variant characters, not just 1 for each character.
