    Thank you. I now know how to get rid of the muddiness in my mixes and get good pan separation of the instruments. This one thing will make all the difference. I wondered why my simple old Tascam PortaStudio 4 track mono track only (stereo output) tape deck gave better mixes than I get in Logic. Stereo channels are great for simple things with few instruments but once several instruments are added it quickly becomes challenging or impossible to get clean separation and placement of sounds, at least for me. Perhaps this is one big reason why the music of the 60's, 70's and 80's often sounds cleaner, with better sound separation that what came afterwards. Thanks again.

    Black Diamond! 🤘 (And if it seems like it's not working, make sure any Audio FX you have on the track are changed from Stereo to Mono)

    Nice, clear instructions. It is time for Apple to incorporate a simple(r) command to convert stereo to mono. Thanks.

    not sure what im missing but this doesn't work for me. when I bounce it, it bounces literally as stereo track still but with only the left audio showing on the stereo on the right is just a blank line. its not bouncing mono?

    What version of Logic are you using? When I click on the input I don't get that menu. I'm on Logic Pro 10.14.6

    Very clear, as usual. However, when I click/hold on the stereo/mono tab, it doesn't bring up a dialog, it just switches between, am I crazy?

    If you did select ‘include volume/automation’ logic bounces it out as stereo. I find this confusing as you may not even have any panning on the track, just volume automation, and logic still gives you a stereo file

    Thanks man. Yeah it's quite long winded. There is also as you know the split stereo option which is even longer and is actually bugged as it doesn't save properly without a work around.

  • @PANTECHNICONRecordings

    OK, so now you’ve got exactly the same audio as you had on the original stereo track, but just taking up two channels instead. Unless you’re then going to treat them differently (which risks screwing up the stereo image for your whole kit), what was the point?

    • @SwingingCreeper
      @SwingingCreeper 2 года назад

      I think the point is how to split a stereo track into two separate mono ones. He was just using the drum track as an example

    • @PANTECHNICONRecordings
      @PANTECHNICONRecordings 2 года назад

      @@SwingingCreeper Could be, I suppose. But then wouldn’t a better example be something like two hard-panned guitar parts, or something like that?

    Great Tutorials! When I change the automation on a single region, all subsequent regions change. Is there a preference that prevents this?

    • @MusicTechHelpGuy
      @MusicTechHelpGuy  2 года назад

      Is the automation drawn on a region that has been looped? It might be looping the automation. If that's the case select all of the regions and press Control L. This will convert your loops to real copies. And then the automation will be independent.

    • @rogergervais1215
      @rogergervais1215 2 года назад

      No ,the regions are not looped.

    I'm not a professional so I'll probably never find myself in this situation to split something like this but I'm curious; this is done only because someone forgot to record in mono with two mics?

    • @MusicTechHelpGuy
      @MusicTechHelpGuy  2 года назад +1

      If you record on a stereo track with only 1 mic, it will only record to the left channel usually. But it depends on what input your plugged into.
      The most common reason I do this is when I get stereo recordings made with 2 mics, but I need to mix the two channels separately. It's mostly drum overheads that were recorded in stereo, where one channel is vastly different than the other. Often I need to automate down the hi hat in the left channel to keep it from overwhelming the rest of the kit.
      Or stereo recordings of acoustic guitar where the mic pointed at the body is vastly different sounding from the neck mic.
      I'll often record my overheads to a stereo track as well, because it makes editing easier, then after the editing is done, I'll split the channels and mix the overheads as two channels.

    • @soontaek
      @soontaek 2 года назад

      @@MusicTechHelpGuy oh I see now! One mic only records to one channel (one signal). And it's one stereo recording produced by two separate mics (two different signals). And you separate them to use them separately. That clears things up for me. Thanks for the detailed reply.

    what about duplicating the track then bouncing them to mono skipping the middle part ? or would that create phase issues.

    • @MusicTechHelpGuy
      @MusicTechHelpGuy  2 года назад +2

      That will just convert the stereo files into mono by summing the left and right channels, so you'll just end up with 2 mono regions with all of the left and right information. Not only can it cause phase issues, it also removes any stereo variation from the original recording.

  • @Astronometric

    Or you can keep the track stereo and insert the plugins in dual mono. Tbh, I never felt the necessity to split stero tracks.
