A remake of an extremely popular video I made 3 years ago! This time I answer everybody's burning questions, and I take a more in depth look at exactly where all the equipment is and every detail of the strategy. There's also a slight upgrade in voice quality ;P

Thanks to Blackwarrior2003 for pointing out that Cid's Javelin is much better than the Viper Halberd and the Scimitar. In fact, it's the best growth weapon in the game in terms of total AP gained after a battle. The Apocalypse is only more useful if you are trying to level up a certain materia in the quickest amount of time.
Thanks to ConvictedHeart for reminding me that the Ancient Forest can also be reached with a Green or Black Chocobo.

Well, there was a report of a glitch in the PC version of the game that prevented you from getting out of the Crater if you put the save crystal near the fork, but I haven't personally seen that happen yet to me. Think that's what the people are talking about.
JD Shadow that’s in all versions, I think and it can happen almost anywhere in the Northern Cavern.
No, that was in the PS1 version too. I know because I found out the hard way. Actually, my FFVII save file got corrupted after I unknowingly did it...
Yeah my brother got stuck in the crater due to that. (Fortunately for him he had a seperate save file before entering)
For those wanting a disc 1 materia leveling area... Once ya get the Tiny Bronco, head to the Mideel area and grind Headhunters with Double Growth stuff... Bam.

The hallway under junon can net about 20ap per enemy per battle, its one of the best early game disk1 farm spots imo.
Mideel offers 240AP per battle
@jessl1934 junon hallway is accessible much earlier, and can yield 20ap per enemy and can have multiple enemies. It's one of the best early game farm locations.
If it saves time...its not cheating. .lol
Master Tonberry can also be morphed into a Ribbon (the best accessory in the game: it prevents ALL status effects except Slow, Stop and Instant Death).
It's actually useless imo. An experienced player will know which status effects to expect for any given fight, and how to adjust accordingly.

So, it seems you DID in fact forget something in this video. I am not sure if someone has mentioned this already, but I will mention it here anyway. There is actually a 5 slot double-growth weapon. It is a weapon for Cid. It is called the Javelin and you get it from a treasure chest in one of the caves in Gaea's cliff. (the one just after you push the snow boulder if I remember correctly.)

This is true I had the weapon on one of my old saves but could never remember where I got it from.
You are right. It provides 62 Attack, 104 Attack%, 12 Magic, and has five Materia slots, four of which are linked. It provides Double AP, and arguably the best Materia-leveling weapon (as the triple AP weapons have fewer Materia slots). It is found on Gaea's Cliff.
@@hyperborean. Mathematically, that is true. Cid's triple is 2 slot - Triple Growth x 2 slot = 6 growth vs Double Growth x 5 slots = 10 growth. So it's definitely BiS for Cid for growth.
For Cloud, however, Apocalypse is BiS for growth. Triple * 3 = 9 growth, vs 8 growth on his double growth weapons.
@@garrettk7166 I like the triple growth weapons for materia like kor, slash all, etc. Everyone gets a rune armlet so there's plenty of double growth slots imo, but everyone's got their strategy.
man, I replay this game about every 3 years. In 1999 I made a perfect file and spent about 150 hours grinding materia around mideel
Replaying ff7 in 2019, first time replaying it in 20years.... with reunion and HD background mods it’s another level of awesome. This guide really helps.
Okay, I went through a list of every single enemy in the game and found two enemies that both give 200 ap each, the blue dragon in Gaea's Cliff, and the sea worm on the beeches near Mideel. Furthermore, if you go to the sunken Gelnika (the downed plane on the ocean floor) you can fight Unknowns 1 2 and 3 which give 150, 200, and 300 ap respectively.
As for the second question, all materia takes a good amount of time to master, but revive is one of the middle materia in terms of time to master.

"Steal as well" materia paired with either Master Command material or 4x cut makes it easier to steal
When I was younger I always used to put it on a mastered Comet materia
Master Command+HP Absorb but with a separate double-cut materia.
The card game in VIII was so awesome, I would play that game longer than the actual game, lol. I loved the card game in IX too, but not as much.

Thanks for the video, 4-8. Interesting stuff, here are some thoughts for you:
Re: the Master Tonberry, you can also Morph them for Ribbon, the best status-effect protection accessory in the game. You can acquire two other Ribbons in the game but if you want three so your entire party can wear one, you will have to Morph a Tonberry. Yuffie is the best Morpher with her Ultimate Weapon, Conformer, because the 1/8 damage penalty for Morph doesn't apply. Yuffie can therefore Morph at full strength.
Another important problem one must look out for while growing Materia, is to be aware of the Materia limit! Depending on your game version, there is a limit to how many Materia you can carry. 200 in the original PS version, I believe the limit was increased in the PC port. If you are at the limit and a new Materia is spawned by mastering an old one, the spawned materia will *delete another Materia in your inventory to make room*. Usually it will hit basic Elemental materia like Fire, Ice, or Lightning, but it will also delete Mastered materia. It won't hit equipped Materia. The game does not give you any warning that this is happening or that you are at your Materia limit. You need to be careful and keep track, remember that every Materia you master adds a baby spawn materia and takes up another space in your Materia inventory.
Also, on the subject of getting rich, few get rich quick methods can beat selling Mastered All materia. They sell for a whopping 1.4 *million* gil, and you should already have four or five of them from the plot. They can be bought in Fort Condor once you have the Highwind, I think for 30,000 gil. They are quick to master, requiring only 35000 AP. Besides, you will hardly need them any more once you spawn two more Mega All materias. It's not like you will really need so much money, but it's quite easy to become a multimillionaire. You could even hit the gil limit, which is over 4 billion gil. (Be careful, though - the limit is 4,294,967,295 gil, and it has no hard cap. If you go over, the counter will glitch and roll over to zero, making you a pauper!)

Also: Should I play the Steam version or the PS1 version? I heard the original PC port was screwy.
PS1 if you ask me. I don't know about the steam version, never played it. The PC port is a nightmare to install.
steam version is easy to install, the older version was harder cus u may need patches etc

@@nfinn42 I've got the Steam port. It's pretty good, but the gamepad support for it is screwy. It works with your standard X-Input controller right out of the box, but the button configuration they gave to it is ... bizarre, to say the least.
I'd recommend remapping the buttons so they roughly coincide with the PSX version, so as to keep from tearing your hair out.
The plus side to the Steam version: it's moddable, and some seriously EXCELLENT mods have been made for the game. Essentially the mods range from an HD facelift to completely remastered musical score. It practically turns FFVII into a brand new-game.
Also worth mentioning are the Menu Overhaul mod and the "Beacause" fan translations, both done by the same team. The Menu Overhaul makes the menu more akin to later Final Fantasy titles, and "Beacause" completely retranslates the game from the ground up, correcting the enormous amount of mistranslations the original had (believe me, there were TONS).
If you want to mod, look up "7th Heaven mod installer" and they'll walk you through the process.
Your video says that the Ancient Forest can only be reached by defeating Ultimate Weapon or by using a Gold chocobo, but a Green chocobo is able to reach it successfully. That means you could obtain the Apocalypse sword as early as obtaining the Highwind with Tifa as the party leader.
+Don Whiting This is true. Sometimes it's easier just for the sake of the video to just say gold chocobo, but I should have mentioned a gold green or black chocobo can be used. Most people save chocobo breeding until the end of the game though, since it can be complicated without a guide. Thanks for the comment!

RUclips needs more of this content. Not many disect the game and tell you how to do certain things that normally you would find almost possible ie ruby weapon. It's nice to see tutorials instead of let's plays because let's plays get really boring really fast. Kudos to you sir!

+4-8Productions I would like to see more of this kind of stuff. in fact if your interested there is some things I discovered that make the game far easier, and actually kind of causes the game to level itself. back in the 2000s, I had most of my entire crew's STATS maxed (however, I am not entirely sure what number they actually were at due to the stat shee t not displaying any numbers past 255, but I know I had cloud's strength somewhere around 312, I kind of lost count after that...) so if your interested I would love to discuss this in another medium like face book messenger or skype.
p.s. I spent well over 2000 hours on this game, i ABSOLUTELY love it!
+david keyes I forgot to pioint out that I did NOT use any sort of cheating/hacking devices. I wouldn't say i didn't cheat.. unless your among the "A" group of cheaters, then idid not lol. UI can explain further if desired.

ohh the good ol days. Nowadays we just run through games, hoping to not get jump scared. Back in the day big enemies were actually scary, because back then we put part of ourselves in the games we played. When our character was in trouble, we actually felt like we were in danger too!

HP Plus you can buy in various locations, but the location that comes to mind right away is the material shop in Cosmo Canyon for ~8000 gil

I couldn't care less if anyone considered the W-Item glitch cheating. Elixers and megalixers are extremely hard to come by and i'm going to exploit the glitch that Squaresoft provided us 20 years ago in 1997 lol. W-Item is also a very easy materia to miss.
I mean, it is cheating, by definition. It's just that it doesn't matter whether you cheat or not because it's a singleplayer game
Well, by definition, it would need to be unfair and dishonest for it to be considered cheating. Since fairness is subjective and you can't really behave dishonestly in a single player game, only the player can decide if it's cheating or not.
The fact that you get W-Item so late in the game, it can be easily missed, and you already to have the item in your inventory to dupe it, makes calling it cheating kind of silly to me. You already MUST able to obtain the item to use the glitch, and nothing is registering your items as illegitimate or something, meaning all it's really "cheating" you out of is grinding in encounters.
The legal term is exploitation. Cheating would mean that they did something wrong. They didn't. Its like a legal loophole, only it really has no real world effect.
It is definitely the exploitation of a 20 year old glitch. I dont think you can cheat in a single player game because you cant "gain an unfair advantage in a dishonest way" in a single player game. You're just increasing the enjoyment factor for yourself. Though, i am one those die hard FFVII playera who has always shunned people who haved used gamesharks to level or whatever. RPGs are about the grind, and while I can understand some people seeing the W-item glitch objectable, its their choice to use it, but it is in the game.
For what you did at the Final Fantasy 7 guides let me tell you one thing : You Sir are a hero!

double-growth not necessary. It will offer the same AP to 4 materia as an 8-slot equipment would to 8 materia. In effect, Cid's 'javelin' is better than the scimitar for growth:
5-slotsx2=10>2-slotsx3=6
ten is greater than six, making the javelin the BEST equipment for materia growth in the game. (Apocalypse: 3-slotsx3=9)

I spent entire nights of the lockdown in the Northern Crater just grinding Materia combinations for the hell of it because of this video. Thanks for getting me through the hell that was Spring of 2020.

At the end of the cave there is a giant spiraling hole of mist. The party gathers around and Cloud makes the comment "This is the center of the planet." After that cut scene you can either walk back or jump down into the crater. Once you jump down, you cannot return. If you choose to turn back any time before that, you can still get completely out of the crater.
I’m doing this on disc one and I know that there are these rhino robot things that you can battles in gongaga at the broken reactor and they give you a good amount of Gil

Oh, and BTW. Yes, movers and magic pot give the most AP of any enemy in the game, but the rarity of encountering them makes this method far less efficient than farming the third highest AP giving enemy which are the green scorpion/mantis looking enemies in the Mideel area which are pretty much the only thing you run into in that area.😉
Equip a mastered Enemy Lure materia in that swamp area of the Northern Crater and you'll fight Magic Pots a lot more often. Movers are still rare, though.

Bro I love these vids. I'm about to start an 100% run on FF7 and you are thee FF7 master just off of your 5+ ways to bet the weapons vids. I thought my friend as a kid was a legend when he had two ways to bet the weapons but you got the title. I've beaten the weapons as a kid too but it wasn't as easy as your no button method. I did the kill your ally method with mime of limit breaks but totally found that out by fluke chance and the first time I won against Ruby I ran into the tenticle glicthe and had to redo the battle. These vids got me excited to max out the game. (Pulling psx out as I comment.)

Not to be pedantic, but I would argue that the Javelin is actually SUPERIOR to the Apocalypse rather than the other way around because you gain a gross total of 10 times the battle's given AP rather than the 9 times offered by the Apocalypse.
I'm not sure what you mean, the Apocalypse has three slots versus the Javelin's two, and they both have triple growth, so the Apocalypse would obviously grant a higher amount of experience if more materia is attached to it, unless I am missing something.
4-8Productions I think you're thinking of the Scimitar. Sorry, I should have specified. The Javelin is the double growth weapon with 5 slots, which you said was second best growth to the Apocalypse in your description. I was merely pointing out that if you do the math, 5 slots with double growth = battle's AP amount is received 10 times, whereas with the Apocalypse, 3 slots with triple growth means the battle's AP is received 9 times, giving the Javelin more growth per battle overall.
Kunaal Toprani Oops, my mistake. You're right, the Javelin is superior, but in general it seems better to use the Apocalypse unless you are mastering tons of materia. Trying to master Knights of the Round on a double growth weapon will take forever. Anyways, thank you for the correction! I will edit my description.
Kunaal Toprani I would have to agree with 4-8 Pro, mostly because certain Materia take up to 5x longer than the average rate of mastering. Because there's a hardcap of 200 Materia at a time, you might end up mastering too few KOTR while having way too much everything, and causing alot of problems when you reach said cap.
Eventually I swapped Javelin to Scimitar also, since again, some Materia take way too long to max out. Hell, I swapped Rune for Wizard since again, some Materia level really fast, and others, way too long.
So the result of this discussion is, if you need to master a ton of materia, use a 2x growth item; if you need to master a specific materia, and/or that materia has a very high AP requirement, use 3x growth. In most cases the 2x would work out better.

I've been using the official guidebook and the way they word a couple things REALLY makes it sound like you cannot leave, so I was worried about entering (didn't help that friends who've beaten even think you can't leave haha). Hey, keep it up. Your the go to guy for all my FF7 needs. Especially on all the little hidden gems and other hidden objectives. Plus quest line help occasionally. Thank you when i get the remake I'll see you for that as well
W-item glitch is an exploit that let's you gain a huge amount of items in a way that was not intended, it's a cheat, but who cares? This is a single player game and cheating hurts no one, especially if you've played the game before and now want to move things along more quickly and avoid some of the grind, then why not, harmless.
"but who cares?" Does the dictionary caring mean anything to you? Technically, use of an exploit does NOT pass muster as a cheat unless you have entered into an agreement of some kind before hand that you would not use exploits. To cheat you must... well here is the definition: www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/cheat read it for yourself. Otherwise those with knowledge of exploits just have an unfair advantage... something quite prevalent in actual life and it seems that video games are no exception. After all... a person with faster reflexes because they trained are "exploiting" them to win against others in reaction based games. Is that cheating too? Also counting the fact that a very precise order of actions have been researched and prescribed to achieve the results described here would constitute cheating if your definition was followed. As far as I can tell in the video... no deceit, fraud, trickery, or dishonesty was used and neither was anyone deprived of anything... except those that learned something and were deprived of a little bit of ignorance.
You have tricked the game in to giving you a free item. You cheated the rules. In video game context, we would call this specific glitch "duping", and it is considered cheating in any game. Another common name for a possibly useful glitch like this is an 'exploit'.

Is there a reason you are not able to accept the definition of the word cheat as it is defined? Here's an explanation with Cloud. Start with Braver use it 7 times to get Cross Slash. To get Blade Beam kill 80 enemies. Use Blade Beam 7 times unlocks Climhazard. to unlock limit 3-1 Meteorain you have to kill another 80 after getting Blade Beam. Use Meteorain 7 times to unlock Finishing Touch. then once you get Finishing Touch can use the Omnislash item won from Gold Saucer to teach Omnislash. It's the same for every character. Except the level 4 limit you have to find it in the world.

My rule of thumb is that if an exploit/glitch is only saving you time, then it is not cheating
so, by your logic, if there was a lvl 99 glitch in midgard, that'd totally be okay, because you could theoretically fight battles in midgard to get to that point. your idea also does't necessarily exclude say, a gameshark giving you 99 elixirs, simply because it's possible to get that many, eventually.
tbh i don't actually care, it's just an amusing idea, really. imo, if it's not gonna ruin the game for you, and you want to, fuck it, go for it. doesn't matter if it's labeled as a 'cheat' or not.
hell, i've had awesome experiences where it was 100% cheating - one in replaying the dot hack gu games again, i hacked my skills to give me some of the spells not officially released in the game till vol. 3 - given it's all based on stuff from an earlier series, the effects are still coded into the game weirdly enough.
and second in kongdoms of amalur reckoning, there's a level 40 cap, which lets you make one solid character mostly devoted to 1/3 skill trees, one meh to shit character mostly messing with 2/3 skill trees, or just a kinda shitty one with all 3, with bonuses to your widespread nature to try and compensate, but lacking any access to the best skills. so, at level 39, i used cheat engine to freeze my level at 39 - leveled up like 10+ times after that, getting more skill points to make a truly jack of all trades ish character. was honestly the best character idea, not too OP.
If time and hard work were originally required to receive a reward and you used a glitch to circumvent the work so you can get the reward right away, then you definitely cheated.

The W-Item glitch isn't cheating, It's a piece of coding that works, but also works in an unintended way.
So if anything it's more of an exploit, not a cheat. Plus considering alot of people don't know how to use said glitch I think it's mostly the jealousy speaking when people call it cheating.
Plus considering using the glitch isn't exactly a game breaking "cheat", items usefulness only stretches so far, the rest is down to strategy and the ability to adapt when things don't go as expected.
you can max out your stats fairly easily using the glitch.
When people take advantage of exploits in multiplayer games they still get called cheaters though sadly. Lol

It's just doesn't hold up. What game dev wants you to just get free good items? None. It's okay. It's not a big deal. You're cheating. Woo.
If you don't use the glitch there are like 2 hero drinks in the whole game, both right at the end, and their usefulness or impact on the game disappear totally. Other items are also rare or hard to get. W-Item glitch makes the game better.

The W-item glitch is not cheating. Why?
Because I picked the first item, then chose the second item, changed my mind, and canceled the second item. Am I not allowed to ever change my mind and cancel the 2nd item? To avoid the glitch would interfere with the normal way you'd play and make decisions throughout the game.
The fact that it duplicates the first item was not my "intention", but what's done is done. I'm not gonna waste time counting, recounting, and deleting items just because the programmers messed up. So I just move on with my life and not worry about it.
an honest mistake... of course the 12897598 th time you repeat the mistake you already figured out your inventory is packed with lots of convenient usables and how exploiting glitches breaks the game pacing... ;)
If someone underpays to the IRS one year and notices extra $ in the bank, that can happen. Doing it for the next 15 years I don't think, "Oops, my bad. Honest mistake!" will fly during the audit.

I could see how that could be construed as cheating. Though as he mentioned earlier this is meant for end game grinding really. When elixers and everything else is pretty easy to obtain, just time consuming. However using the w-item glitch early in the game to duplicate one of the few elixers or mega elixers you get before they're readily available would certainly break pacing.
except it is cheating. the only real question is if it bothers you. most people don't get bothered by it, but purists/challenge runners usually are. personally, i love time saving glitches. it simply means more time to enjoy the parts i like.

As for the W-Item Glitch being cheating or not, this depends on one's attitude about gaming and purity. FFVII even without the glitch, is a ridiculously easy game (one reason people create challenges like "no item use no summons no inns no random encounters" etc., etc.). So if a person wants to use the W-Item trick to make the game even MORE ridiculously easy, it's hard to see why they should be criticized. It's not a multiplayer game, so it's not like you're getting an advantage over someone else. If there's a part of the game you consider to be senseless grinding that takes away from your fun, by all means, use bugs or exploits to zip past that part. But if you want your huge Elixir total to be something you can honestly brag about, then you will have to
steal them honestly from Gighee or whatever rather than duping them up. The single player thing means bug abuse / glitching is a personal preference thing. Now, if you're doing some kind of challenge or speedrun, there very may well be rules about what sorts of bugs you're allowed to use. If someone finds a glitch tomorrow where you can do some kind of song and dance in the Temple of the Ancients and suddenly skip straight to the North Cave, that would obviously massively cut down on speed runs, and the FFVII speed running community would have to decide whether to accept that bug as "legit" or not. If they decide to reject the bug, then obviously you'd have to refrain from exploiting it to earn their admiration of your best times.
This is similar to an issue we had long ago in the original Diablo (Diablo 1) community on Battle.net. There were players who used trainers to create impossible items, like Godly Full Plate Mail of the Whale, and there were also several easily exploitable in-game bugs, primarily an item duplication bug that worked similarly to the W-Item trick and allowed perfect replication of equipment and potions. As a result, Battle.net was flooded with duplicates of high powered items, to the point that newbies getting online could easily go into a chatroom and beg for a few minutes and quickly find a player willing to dupe (duplicate) top-level equipment to give to them. Such equipment of course takes all the challenge out of the game and often such newbies would wind up being quickly bored by the game. Those of us in a group called the DSF (Diablo Strategy Forum) argued against bug usage, a playstyle we called playing "legit". Diablo wasn't quite as easy as FFVII but it was close, and indeed players came up with many challenges (called "variants") to make play more challenging than the easy base game. We did not scorn people who used bugs, but neither did we respect them. To earn our respect you had to not only play legit, but strive to challenge yourself beyond the limits of the base game.
(One example of a challenge was the "Ironman" game - a team would create new level 1 characters, go down into the dungeon, and never come back up. No buying or repairing anything in town - you had to live off the land, get potions and weapons dropped by monsters, and somehow stay alive to beat the final boss. Ironman games were a tough challenge and most teams, even when played by experts, would die horribly within a few levels. Actual Ironman victories happened maybe once a year, and were celebrated as true epics.)
A side issue with bugs and exploits is the matter of intentionality. Some gamers say that if a glitch was somehow intentional - intended by the developers - then it's not a bug at all, but an easter egg or a hidden feature. If it was unintentional, then it was a bug. People often use this divide to try to define some bugs as cheating and some not. For the W-Item glitch, I think this is a hazy area. If you had asked me ten years ago, I'd have said "obviously it was not intentional, it's a side effect of the W-Item glitch aspect where it can eat your items". But from what I hear, the glitch was *partially* fixed in the recent PC rerelease - the glitch still works for throwables and consumables but not for Sources. This seems to argue that the team who made the port (who I guess at least
technically represent the game developers, even though of course FFVII's original dev team have mostly moved on), by not removing the glitch entirely, are sending a signal that the glitch is an intentional part of the game. So for some people, this means W-Item glitch has now been given the Squenix Seal of Approval making it OK.
But for me, the idea of deciding whether a bug is OK based on whether the developers intended it, misses the point. The developers aren't in the room with you and don't care what you do (as long as you're not cheating in an MMO, that is). Cheat or not, it's all the same to them - they already got your money. I think that people use the "intentionality" argument to simply support a position they've already decided (for or against), ie., a rationalization. To me, what matters isn't whether the bug was intended, it's what effect it has on the game. Does it make it more fun? Less fun? More challenging? Less challenging? These are the only things that matter.
So to me, I think it's up to every player to decide whether bug exploitation suits them. Are you just in it to see all the game has to offer (ie., go to all the places, get all the weapons, kill one of every monster, that kind of thing)? If so, bug abuse may help you achieve your goal. But if instead you're up for a challenge, you'll want to avoid anything that makes an already easy game easier, which would include bugs and exploits. And of course, if you want bragging rights, or to show off your skills, you will need to develop skills - and that means you will need to practice without the training wheels that bugs provide.
+nfinn42 This is a great post, but I have to correct you on something: the glitch does still work for sources on the PC version. I've had it and done it before. So it honestly wasn't fixed at all.

nfinn42 With all due respect, I'm pretty sure you couldn't duplicate things like sources (and other non-battle items) using the glitch in the first place. However, our homefry here who made all these videos does mention in one of his videos how to duplicate things like sources. It's probably in the "glitches and oddities" video. It's like a glitch within a glitch.

It was amazing coming of age with this game (I just turned 33 January 6th) because the numerous flaws and intricate patterns (i.e. every double growth weapon available in Junan) make it like getting to know a person.
