    That dance shuffle he does after Arith dies is the same shuffle he used when he attempts to generate a fortune for cloud when he first meets him in the golden saucer. and my thought was he was attempting to do it again. But obviously failing as Arith has no future. and sadly shuffles away.
    i don't think it was a disrespectful dance, but man they could have probably made that a lot clearer

      Yeah, the character's responding with its defining (albeit bizzare) trait. I see it being unable to tell Aeris's fortune as adding to the tragedy. Cait Sith is kinda poorly rendered as comic relief (when compared to the other vivid characters) and something's lost in translation, but it has a weirdly compelling arc

      Agreed, I interpreted it a fortune attempt, since Aerith asked before, and one of his first ones was foreshadowing her death. Trying to do the thing he's supposed to be good for one last time, but it's ultimately pointless and he can't do anything but silently leave the scene in the end.
      Though yeah, I'm not going to deny that it's not conveyed very well with the sprite and the way his movements are always generally cartoonish.

      Fortune telling makes sense, from a storyteller's perspective, maybe it was a reminder of the fortune Cait Sith gave earlier, the 'you will find sephiroth but lose something very dear' thing.

    The more you learn about Cait Sith, the less you understand about him - and I think that’s the point. He’s easily the most bizarre member of the party and sort of embodies the more whimsical, but still enigmatic, feel of parts of FF7.

    There's a scene in Dirge when Reeve is actually talking "to" Cait Sith, they seem to have different outlooks on things, and there's a few scenes on Cid's ship where they look at each other for confirmation after one says something. So yeah, pretty sure the Caits are sentient, that or Reeve is schizophrenic and Cait is a vessel for a completely separate part of his mind.

    the funny joke dance during the death scene is Cait’s animation when he does fortune telling. You even showed examples of him doing the dance with fortune related text box. Imho its actually quite sad, Cait wanted to do a fortune for Aerith to see she is still with the party in the future. If he sees something, he could inform everyone that she can be revived with some way or another (eg phoenix downs, Life spells etc). Cait suddenly stops and looks sheepish as he walks away, because he couldnt do the fortune, pretty much confirming the fact that Aeriths has truely gone.

    Suggestions for future episodes:
    1.) Jenova as a character. What do we know about "her?"
    2.) Jenova vs. Sephiroth. Who is controlling whom? Why is Sephiroth the embodiment of the bad guy and not the "more powerful" Jenova?
    3.) Pre-Zack timeline of the FF7 world. In other words, what is the history of the world BEFORE Zack enters the story? Basically, the history of the Ancients through Jenova and the weapons, beginnings of Shinra.
    4.) FF7 geography: what do we know about the various geographic locations?

    • @varsoonhks3211
      @varsoonhks3211 4 года назад +11

      On 2, I'm firmly of the mind that Jenova is controlling Sephiroth but also needs Sephiroth as her avatar/agent in the world. Sephiroth's kept alive for this purpose, and when you defeat Jenova at the end of the game, you then have to face off against a Sephiroth that has Jenova's powers and so much of an impression of her will upon his that the two are almost indistinguishable.
      Now, a lot of people will prop up Sephiroth as 'in control' due to his 'strong willpower' and will point to a passage from the Ultimania that says Sephiroth gained control or to when, in Northern Crater, Hojo says Sephiroth was having all the pieces of Jenova reconvene at Northern Crater. To address this:
      1. Sephiroth's willpower pre-Jenova is never explicitly made out to be strong. In fact, once you get to Nibelheim, it doesn't take him much time at all to snap.
      2. Sephiroth DOES gain control--at the very end of the game. When you fight him, stronger than ever.
      3. Jenova was keeping Sephiroth alive because she needed his body/mind to send that signal, because, through him, she could express a stronger control signal. Also-also, Hojo's not a great authority to point towards for any facts in the game. This is the man who tried to breed Aeris with Nanaki by putting them both in a sealed room together.
      From a meta-textual standpoint, it also makes much more sense for Jenova to be the primary antagonist and the one in control. Consider Square's other games around the same time--Chrono Trigger, Parasite Eve, Xenogears--all focused on stories about an alien/parasite that works through agents, usually manipulating people to its own ends.
      Even within Final Fantasy 7, it makes more narrative sense--part of the huge reveal of the game is that Cloud has been lying about his past. His actual connection to Sephiroth is much less meaningful than we are led to believe. If anyone's really responsible for burning down his town, it's Jenova. Until this reveal, the whole team (and the player) is strung along by false images of Sephiroth. Most players are able to grasp that Cloud isn't who he said he was, but, for some reason, they also don't understand that Sephiroth wasn't the person antagonizing and manipulating the party all along. The game so strongly convinces players of Cloud's narrative and Sephiroth's antagonism that when the big twist comes, most of those players are still convinced.
      Not me. Jenova's the villain of Final Fantasy 7, and the one in control.

    • @camazotzbat5970
      @camazotzbat5970 4 года назад +2

      @@varsoonhks3211 Worth adding that the characters themselves, Cloud and company, also can not grasp this in game and that's important to describing Jenova as an almost Cthulhu type of enemy without a face, but present everywhere, eldritch and alien and without ever speaking a word from its own mouth.
      Sephiroth is humanity's need to put a face to things like that, even when 'Sephiroth' was just the tip of a wiggly tendril.
      I always, myself, thought it extremely bizarre for Sephiroth to conclude that he could become a god by smashing a meteor into the planet. That sounds much more like a plan to shatter the planet and send parasitic tendrils deeper into the cosmos rather than a plan to 'become god because lifestream.' I know with this Reeve magic its all gonna be a little muddy, but seriously, Sephiroth's plan literally reads like it works out for Jenova, not Sephiroth, if you take the actions they're carrying out and not the words their mouths are flapping.

    I think the generally accepted view is that Cait Sith is an A.I. in a robot body. Like JARVIS in Iron Man, he has his own opinions but carries out programmed commands from his creator. Instead of Reeve constantly controlling him like an RC plane, Reeve just gives him generally active commands like: "Help Cloud", "regroup with AVALANCHE", "monitor conversations for *keywords*", etc... and then once in while he can use him directly to "drop-in" like smart speakers such as Alexa can do.

    For Cait Sith's reaction after Aerith's death... I viewed it as him remembering his first fortune he gave both Cloud and Aerith (and subconciously doing the fortune telling animation) which slows and becomes distorted as he starts to feel responsible as he tries to comprehend what has just happened before just... shuffling away in shame and sadness... What you pursue will be yours, but you will lose something dear.

  • @Cure_Hana

    I feel like TeamFourStar handled Cait Sith’s development and mechanics a lot better in FFVII Machinabridged. While they still don’t go into much detail about how Reeve is able to control him, I think it’s safe to assume that he and Cait are one and the same, with Reeve speaking through the doll telepathically.
    While TFS Cait does have a touch of goofiness, he also shares Reeve’s neurotic tendencies. Two particular examples are how he gets easily nervous when Tifa starts to suspect that he might be trouble; and how he argues with Yuffie and Vincent during the tower-defense mini game at Ft. Condor, insisting that they manage resources carefully instead just randomly placing soldiers wherever they want.
    Another trait hinting that Cait really is just a vessel for Reeve is how they share the same memories. When Cloud and Aerith first meet him and ask for their fortunes, Cait Sith keeps giving answers that are completely unrelated to their questions, instead printing messages that sound like something out of Reeve’s diary (getting cheated on during a first date, how to make a birthday cake for one, his guilt if the Sector 7 tragedy, etc). Later on, Cid asks Cait what he imagines as his happy place when he closes his eyes, only for the latter to have PTSD flashbacks while hearing the screams of those who died in Sector 7.
    Finally, upon returning to Midgar with Cloud and co., Reeve tries to intercept Scarlet’s takeover by using Cait to tap into the TV system and communicate with the whole city. It’s hear that Cait Sith finally drops his Meowth-esque Brooklyn accent to speak to the citizens in Reeve’s normal voice, revealing that he’s just a puppet to hide his master’s identity, while Mog (the moogle he rides) channels out his inner depression and guilt.
    While TFS Cait Sith is still comedic in his own way, I think that he mainly serves as a way for Reeve to actually have a chance to be himself without being stuck inside a professional environment: someone who’s smart, compassionate, and likes to cheer people up, but has become weary and numb overtime from working with a corrupted corporation like Shinra.

    That's just it: you can't really speak Kansai dialect in English, so they made a reference to his Celtic myth origin instead. That's just translators doing their job of conveying the flavour of his accent being exotic somehow.
    Also he doesn't do "evil Shinra stuff." He infiltrates Cloud's group with the intent of undermining Shinra - the keystone incident is just something he does to maintain that cover. Reeve is constantly shown as a dissenting voice in Shinra. At least, that's how I see it.

    • @calciferblack2409
      @calciferblack2409 5 лет назад +3

      But after the party meets the Turks near Gongaga, the characters theorise that they might be being spyed on. It's inferred that the Turks were there due to Cait Sith being a spy. Reeve definitely has better morals than the other Shinra executives but I don't think he INITIALLY joined the party to undermine the company.

    I think the reason why Death Joker and Game Over ignore death resistance is because there not actually death effects, or at least there not flagged as such in the game. I think it just sets the HP of the target to zero and the only reason I think this is because I actually got Game Over against Ultimate Weapon when I was hunting him down one play though. First fight I some how manged to not get evil flagged on it and he slunk off to Cosmo Canyon, I did have to fight him there so that means the game reset his hp if it does set it to zero when the attack goes though. Why Ruby would be immune to it is beyond me.
    But any way great vid, loved that start up of Dio's statue; the look on it's face sums up the first part of the vid very well. Can't wait for the next one.

    Everything going on with Cait Sith forshadows the twist with Cloud. Both are 'clones,' both are pawns being controlled by a higher power, both win by being who they are and asserting their individuality. He is even introduced as a literal fortune teller predicting Cloud's future. The writers knew exactly what they were doing with this great character and I'm amazed no one noticed.

    6:21 I think you're looking too deeply into part of a book that would have most likely been changed if it ever got an official English translation. In the Japanese version of Advent Children he probably spoke with a Kansai accent. Usually when Japanese media gets dubbed into English they translate the Kansai accent into a Southern accent because Kansai is considered to be the hick part of Japan, but they probably went with a Scottish accent for the dub because he's based on a creature from Scottish folklore.

    There's a materia slot on one of the character designs of the crown, theory, Reeve uses experimental materia to copy a version of his personality onto the stuffed animal, the longer it exists the more it becomes it's own person, Cait Sith 3 has its own personality by the time it dies, Cait Sith 4 is new to controlling Mog and what you're seeing is him trying to get Mog to do something outside of it's basic movements, and failing that carefully removing itself from the situation, it's like a child burdened by the knowledge of an adult, it's trying it's hardest, but it's in way over its head.

    My head Cannon was always that Reeve has nano machines in a region of his brain that operate at a certain frequency with nanotechnology he inserts into inanimate objects. I always felt he controlled Cait Sith mentally using this method. Cait Sith junctions materia, and in a sense, Reeve is using magic in battles with Cait Sith as a proxy. However, with Reeve giving Cait Sith life.. I feel much like every robotic character trope, he began to developed a sense of self over time... which is why the 1st Cait Sith model that was destroyed in the Temple said what he said b4 dying to secure the Black Materia. I feel the Moogle is completely robotic, and responds to the nano controlled cat.

    at the death scene, I believe Cait Sith was trying to do something like conjure up a fortune, something better. That's the dance thing he does when fortune telling at the gold saucer. But the fortune it got, probably, was another bad one. So he just didn't bother handing it over. It was also sort of a way of referencing how his fortune... in a sense... came true, when he gave it to cloud at the gold saucer.

    The answer lies in the Japanese version of the game Cait Sith's name is written with katakana, which is a fonetic script. So, in Japanese he is called "Ketto Shii". The O in Ketto is due to Japanese pronunciation where you have to have a vowel after each consonant.
    Therefore we know that the creators of the game intended his name to be pronounced "Ket Shii". Case closed.

    You can actually see in Cait Sith's Japanese name that his name is still pronounced, "Ketto-shi;" both in Shin Megami Tensei and Final Fantasy. For comparison, if they were to have pronounced it like Star Wars' Sith side like the new spelling suggests, they would have specifically said, "Ketto-Shisu," as "Shisu" is how they pronounce Star Wars' "Sith."
    As for Cait Sith's accent in the English version, it's because we can't very well get differences in accents in non-English languages; let alone translate them to an actual English accents. I'm even pretty sure that if we heard a "normal" Japanese person and a person with a Kansai Japanese accent both speaking English, we likely wouldn't know any difference; just that they're obviously both Japanese. The closest we can recognize is just another non-American English-speaking accent we already know. Speaking of Shin Megami Tensei, we can see this in Labrys in Persona 4 Arena. Her Japanese version has her speaking in a Kansai accent, as well, which the English version changes to a Boston accent; because it's how they can at least get the point of a different accent itself across. Ayumu Kasuga from Azumanga Daioh is another example. She's from Osaka, but, obviously, since we can't distinguish an Osaka accent from any other Japanese accent in English, she was given a Brooklyn accent in the localized manga and then later in the localized anime a Southern accent.

    The cait sith during aerith death scene i think is very deep actually. What does cait sith do when you first run into him at the gold saucer? He gives you a fortune after a little dance. The same dance he does in front of aeriths body. But this time, there was no fortune. With no fortune this indicates no future for Aerith. She is truly dead. After the failed fortune cait sith leaves with head lowered in shame. A desire to bring forth her fortune to realize there is nothing left for her.
