I'd love to see you do the contrived finish achievement, and not just cheesing it like I did by letting Squall die and leaving him dead for the whole game
ffx ability nodes only+no overdrives+no sumons basically you can use all the abilities on the sphere grid and customize equipment at will but you have lv1 stats and can't use overdrives and summons.
I remember the first time i played it. Every boss battle was like half hour, spamming every single summon, one after another, bcs i obviously didn't knew what i was doing. Good times. Ifrit, shiva and quetzacol animations are burned into my mind forever.
First time I played it I didn't even know what Junction is. Game was new (no English ver. yet) and internet wasn't a thing for me. My battle command consists of only Attack and I kept auto-attack everything until I stuck with Gerogero (almost impossible to win by auto attack with all that status ailments). Then I realize how Junction works lol.
And pounding that button to boost the summons... So horrible. Still don't like the card game either, mostly because the rules spread like a virus. Once you learn how to exploit the rules, combat is much better.
Spamming square for the boost, not being sure if it only counts when "boost" is on the screen or the whole animation, without any good internet sources to find an answer.

It's super effective especially for meteor spamming. 2) auto-potion is okay, but counter isn't? if no items were allowed, but auto potion is, that means that counter should be allowed as you're not the one hitting the attack command.
Auto potion is a GF ability which is allowed under the rules, technically i could have used counter but given how much stronger attacks are in the game i wanted to refuse them at all costs. as for meltdown im just an idiot and had it in my head it only worked on VIT and not SPR
@@Primalliquid92 alright, just wondering. Counter would have been much easier than return damage on red giant. Especially less farming but I understand the point
Was thinking the same, just junction water magic. Even without the 'card' command to get more rare cards before the Dollet mission there'll be some decent options.
My favorite self imposed casual FF8 challenge was to allow everything except junctioning the magic to a stat. I allow magic, commands, limits, etc. Just not increasing stats.
Before I watch the video my big brain strat would be to just stay low level and use card/item refines to get high level magic so you can do Firaga Etc on lower level enemies to obliterate. Can also use Demi spells to lower bosses down with 9999 hits while you’re low level. It might be hard to get 100 zombie spells as well but you can also do that and then use healing magic/items or life/full life
Magic is like really bad in Final Fantasy II, though it would be amusing to see Ultima actually be a decent spell since it's power is determined by how many magic levels you've mastered.
I’ve played this game pretty much every year since it came out. I did not know you could actually destroy the spider bot in dollet lol. Knew you could do enough damage to get 50 ap and escape after that but didn’t know you could actually kill it outright. But yeah completing this whole game with just magic is massively impressive
You can prevent getting levels by using the card ability. I don't remember seeing that being restricted. You can farm the fasticalons on balamb to get water early and 3ap each fish.
I have to give props for the ingenious use of return damage against the gigantaur, honestly didn't think you could get past that huge roadblock when I was watching! 500IQ play mate, great work.
Just got home from work and I see that you've uploaded a new video. Today is a good day! Also Primal, I want you to know that you've inspired me to attempt a challenge run of my own and I'm even going to record it and try my hand at making a video of my own... here's hoping this doesn't go terribly.
@@Primalliquid92 I bounced a couple of idea's around before settling on an FF7 run without using the attack or magic commands. Also under that umbrella I'm including summoning and any command materia that changes the attack command, like double cut, or ones that do damage, like deathblow. EDIT: Actually, scratch that. I was planning out the run and halfway through the first disc, I'll be able to trivialize most encounters making the rest too easy to be called a challenge. Instead I'm going to be doing a straight up items only run.
If you didn't allow the attacks from berserk, then can you really count potions from auto potions. If auto cure was an option im sure that would work. No idea how else you could have done it though. Your determination is praise worthy.
Not really. The machanics of time manipulation aren't very well set, and there isn't any explained reason why certain characters know what time compression even does, since it's never been done before, yet they do. Also, the main villain has no real backstory and no strong reason to do the things she does. She's just there to be evil, and isn't even good at it. She doesn't even talk until the very end of the game. Also, why was a moon base created just to seal one sorceress, if they could've just sent her to the depths of space, where no one could release her? How does the technology of this world even operate? What fuel does it run on? Why is there such a technological gap between countries? It's not explained. There are other stuff, but i'll end it here since i don't want this to be too long.
@@Primalliquid92 if I had to guess it's similar to what happened to Auron in ff x and involves ultimecia's time magic. Time manipulations always lets one get away with a lot of fuckery.
@Otacon464 I buy that Ultmecia is Rinoa more than that. Rinoa is not a very likeable character in any way other than she has a crush on the main protagonist. Her being Ultimecia does make sense.
@Otacon464 I might have been a little harsh on Rinoa but still in most of her scenes she is either bossing someone around or lying about something. Its played off a comedy but I always felt some of the stuff she does seems like something Ultimecia would do in her early days.
If I remember correctly, with Diablos, if you draw/stock demi from him and then use Demi from your stock against him, he'll cast Curaga on that party member. I don't know if drawing it from him is necessary if you already have Demi, but I do know that he won't cast Curaga on a party member if you draw/cast it.
The usual 'big brain' i see for magic involves the card refinement system. Refine cards for items to refine into high tier magic...but Ultimecia's castle is definitely an 'odd point' because of the skill seals in place (which includes magic and draw) unless by accessing Gilgamesh (does he bypass GF seals in the castle since he's a 'partial GF'? He comes as he pleases even during bosses) only other strat I would see for late game is the Angel Wing magic spam with Rinna since she casts based on her available magic just without consuming any stocked spells (high speed, auto haste, only put meteor in her magic list, let her blast everything to death)
all of your suggestions would break my rules though, gilga is a GF and not magic, so banned, likewise limit breaks, even angel wings is not using the magic command, so also banned haha
When I originally got Final Fantasy 8 a week after it released, I had been hearing a lot of complaints how having so many summons right at the start of the game made it too easy. So I challenged myself to play the game and never use the summon command. Both times I played through FF8 I played this way. Your way is much scarier
As bad as Final Fantasy grinding is, i still think my plan of getting level 99 on all characters before the boss in the first palace of Persona 5 was worse... I was originally going to wait until i got all the characters, but by then you have access to the Reaper, by far the quickest and easiest way of getting EXP, so i decided that having access to Mementos was banned for my challenge! It took me SOOOO many hours, that i could have done pretty much two entire playthroughs in the time it took me to actually do it...
I have a variant of this that's harder. Obtain all GFs (except Odin) and complete the game in under 30 hours using only Magic and Draw-Cast Commands to deal damage / defeat an enemy The only three rules are: * Magic can only be obtained through refined items by enemy drops * Card Modding is prohibited * Physical attacks only allowed if afflicted by Berserk or Confuse by an enemy This challenge has a few more strategies involved, better knowledge of enemies and their weaknesses and item drops, doesnt allow for excessive grinding, or the means to obtain a lot of powerful Magic (like Meteor) or Items (like Elixirs, Hero Drinks, etc) from Draw-Stocking or Card Modding. The use of Item and certain non-damaging GFs and non-damaging Limit-Breaks will be still valuable, though retains the elements of skill and risk with their use. Im going to make a video on it sometime soon. Good luck :)
I am 42 seconds in, and I am predicting you are going to break Sophie's limit break with Aura shenanigans. After you get Rinoa possessed its going to be a crazy ride, i believe. And sooo much card grinding.
yea Rinoa's would just be far to broken. Selphies is kinda useless in the remaster due to a major nerf to how often the end comes up. so i just went with "no limits" all together
Best girl mages finish the game for you. I'd call that poetic for a magic-only run! MAN!!! That Ultimecia's Castle problem solving was insane!! Really great accomplishment! Upon reflection, I'm astounded you still chose to main with Rinoa and that her random Angelo limit breaks didn't mess you up more than it did! In hindsight, I think the absolute extreme of not even allowing Selphie slots to do your magic for you ended up being a huge boost in stability, especially since we can't open the lid to gain infinite do-overs anymore.
Fun tip: The rosetta stone rng manip can be timed based on the music, it's faster and easier once you find the spot by checking the loot table (can't remember if I found that online or with a hex editor) to know how less or more you should wait, then open the tt request just a few times if you need to adjust for more rng progression.
You asked at the start what we think the hardest part will be. I'm sure you'll manage through the start of Disc 4, but I have no idea how or if you'll be able to get through Ultimecia's Castle Magic Seal. I look forward to finding out. On with the show . . .
I love this! I did a playthrough once where I turned Rinoa into a full sorceress because of the R=U theory! Never thought it would be possible! Great video!!!
11:00 do you... do you really not know about the diablos gimmick? you can draw-store demi from him, then cast it on him from your inventory. Not only does this reduce his HP a fair amount, but whenever he gets hit with a stored (i.e. NOT draw-cast) demi, he responds by casting curaga on the caster. so yeah, I usually beat diablos like this: 1) cast blind until it works so he's less likely to hit you (his physical is the only lethal attack he has) 2) draw (STORE!) demi 3) cast demi from the magic command 4) repeat 2 & 3 until demi deals less than 100 damage 5) finish him off with attacks/limits (or in your case, other magic). this strategy almost always works. it only fails if diablos gets VERY lucky and either manages to wipe the party despite being blind, or avoids the blind spell until I run out.
Well done! Loved the workaround in Ulti's Castle. Although I did find it quite jarring that you pronounced Centra as KEN-tra - for me it's always been SEN-tra in my head (as in center)! The joys of text-only games :P
This reminds me when I did the magic only, no card game run over 10 years ago, and good job remembering return damage, that is what I used, talk about nostalgia.
Look at the final form of Ultimecia. Look at Anima from ffx. I see similarities, and I'm not implying that Anima is a reference to Ultimecia. But could you imagine?
I played this not long after it first came out with no guide or walk through or anything. It took me over 500 hours to complete and I am not bullshitting I only played it in my spare time. During that time I became attached to the characters in their stories and the end of the game ended much like the end of a TV series that I had been watching. This still remains one of my favorite games. It is a staple that I play on regularly.
Challenge use only starting weapons, with throw u also can only use the starting weapons, only the first summon u can get for each character, magic only the the first 3 spells u can acquire the same goes for all other abilities. I would like to so this if u think it's to easy u can reduce the 3 magic and other with 1. The ff game can be of ur choice
Been working all day was just thinking that a challenge run from yourself would be a great way to unwind - thanks for all your hard work on these, the dedication it takes to finish these runs is honestly commendable!

Here's another challenge, beat final fantasy 7 remake with magic only.
On hard mode though. Because fire+magnify and mp absorb+fire literally ruins the game on easy and normal lmao.
@@justsomeguy4422 you can spam magic easily on hard mode as well
zieg feld depends on your setup.
How about beating ff7R without materia?
@@nxtlvlthinking65 disgusting. I could imagine it done in Normal mode + items but that's difficult
You can prevent getting levels by using the card ability. I don't remember seeing that being restricted. You can farm the fasticalons on balamb to get water early and 3ap each fish.
its magic and draw only so of course card would not be allowed lol
I have to give props for the ingenious use of return damage against the gigantaur, honestly didn't think you could get past that huge roadblock when I was watching!
500IQ play mate, great work.
Just got home from work and I see that you've uploaded a new video. Today is a good day!
Also Primal, I want you to know that you've inspired me to attempt a challenge run of my own and I'm even going to record it and try my hand at making a video of my own... here's hoping this doesn't go terribly.
Oh nice! what sort of challenge are you doing?
@@Primalliquid92 I bounced a couple of idea's around before settling on an FF7 run without using the attack or magic commands. Also under that umbrella I'm including summoning and any command materia that changes the attack command, like double cut, or ones that do damage, like deathblow.
EDIT: Actually, scratch that. I was planning out the run and halfway through the first disc, I'll be able to trivialize most encounters making the rest too easy to be called a challenge. Instead I'm going to be doing a straight up items only run.
That's some EPIC grinding , kind sir.
You are indeed a madman.
If you didn't allow the attacks from berserk, then can you really count potions from auto potions. If auto cure was an option im sure that would work. No idea how else you could have done it though. Your determination is praise worthy.
ff8 story lore is amazing tho..
Yes.
@@bryandelmond Bah... little details ... But you are right =/
What if Squall is actually lost between worlds and that's how he ended up in Traverse Town, that's my new head canon
Two things I know about 8, the Squall is dead theory. And Selphie's weapons are two giant red crayons, you can't convince me otherwise
Great vid ^^
i could never understand the squall is dead theory. it just comes so out of left field.
@@Primalliquid92 if I had to guess it's similar to what happened to Auron in ff x and involves ultimecia's time magic. Time manipulations always lets one get away with a lot of fuckery.
@Otacon464 I actually totally dig the theory and it makes a lot of sense. Course it's not what the developers intended i'm sure
The entire time I was worried you would get stuck at the end without the command but you pulled you you genius you 😂
Clearly playing You're not alone was the big brain play of the game.
About the Diabolos Fight, you could've saved a lot of magic uses by just abusing the Demi he gently provides you since he's not immune to it
As bad as Final Fantasy grinding is, i still think my plan of getting level 99 on all characters before the boss in the first palace of Persona 5 was worse...
I cannot get over You're Not Alone being played over VIII gameplay. It messes with my head a little bit.
I really enjoy your videos dude! I'm a HUGE Final Fantasy fan! :D
I have a variant of this that's harder.
Obtain all GFs (except Odin) and complete the game in under 30 hours using only Magic and Draw-Cast Commands to deal damage
/ defeat an enemy
The only three rules are:
* Magic can only be obtained through refined items by enemy drops
* Card Modding is prohibited
* Physical attacks only allowed if afflicted by Berserk or Confuse by an enemy
This challenge has a few more strategies involved, better knowledge of enemies and their weaknesses and item drops, doesnt allow for excessive grinding, or the means to obtain a lot of powerful Magic (like Meteor) or Items (like Elixirs, Hero Drinks, etc) from Draw-Stocking or Card Modding.
The use of Item and certain non-damaging GFs and non-damaging Limit-Breaks will be still valuable, though retains the elements of skill and risk with their use.
Im going to make a video on it sometime soon. Good luck :)
Aha! XD I called it! This should be really interesting :3 confident you’ll do well, watching now
Hope you like it!
Primalliquid it’ll help entertain me fresh home from working nightshift
Primalliquid
- cough cough -
Quistis is best girl
- cough cough -
Agree to disagree? XD
xD sure but im fully in camp Rinoa even if it means seifers sloppy seconds
@@RikuGaranku cute picture! ;D
Thanks for this FFVIII is my favorite ff of all times i might try this some day
I am 42 seconds in, and I am predicting you are going to break Sophie's limit break with Aura shenanigans. After you get Rinoa possessed its going to be a crazy ride, i believe. And sooo much card grinding.
Oh..... No limits..... Well damn.
yea Rinoa's would just be far to broken. Selphies is kinda useless in the remaster due to a major nerf to how often the end comes up. so i just went with "no limits" all together
That was a great run. Ultimecia's Castle though, that was very well done.
Now this is new challange. Only magic and draw
Funny you beat the final boss Entirely without squall
Best girl mages finish the game for you. I'd call that poetic for a magic-only run!
MAN!!! That Ultimecia's Castle problem solving was insane!! Really great accomplishment!
Upon reflection, I'm astounded you still chose to main with Rinoa and that her random Angelo limit breaks didn't mess you up more than it did!
In hindsight, I think the absolute extreme of not even allowing Selphie slots to do your magic for you ended up being a huge boost in stability, especially since we can't open the lid to gain infinite do-overs anymore.
I would love to see you try to beat Grandia without using Magic or special moves.
I'm pretty sure you can get Curaga really early on just by refining tents
My favorite part was the run-saver. Great job!
Glad you liked it!
I comment on videos because I'm lonely
Don't worry the background music is called you're not alone :)
Andrew, come join our discord server. There are a couple hundred people there that are happy to prove you're far from alone :)
Fun tip: The rosetta stone rng manip can be timed based on the music, it's faster and easier once you find the spot by checking the loot table (can't remember if I found that online or with a hex editor) to know how less or more you should wait, then open the tt request just a few times if you need to adjust for more rng progression.
Where the hell did you find the R in QUIS-tis's name?.......who the hell is "kwurstis"
So glad to see this, was one of i guess many to recommend this challenge.
Not finished with the video yet, but using Seifer to max GFs without leveling base party is galaxy-brain. (IMO)
I greatly appreciate that you left in the opening scene other videos always skip it
return damage was actually genius
xD
funnily enough, this probably took many days XD
Truly incredible. Well done sir!
11:00 do you... do you really not know about the diablos gimmick? you can draw-store demi from him, then cast it on him from your inventory. Not only does this reduce his HP a fair amount, but whenever he gets hit with a stored (i.e. NOT draw-cast) demi, he responds by casting curaga on the caster.
so yeah, I usually beat diablos like this:
1) cast blind until it works so he's less likely to hit you (his physical is the only lethal attack he has)
2) draw (STORE!) demi
3) cast demi from the magic command
4) repeat 2 & 3 until demi deals less than 100 damage
5) finish him off with attacks/limits (or in your case, other magic).
this strategy almost always works. it only fails if diablos gets VERY lucky and either manages to wipe the party despite being blind, or avoids the blind spell until I run out.
Well done! Loved the workaround in Ulti's Castle. Although I did find it quite jarring that you pronounced Centra as KEN-tra - for me it's always been SEN-tra in my head (as in center)! The joys of text-only games :P
How about Final Fantasy 6 but you have to beat the entire game as Imps?
This reminds me when I did the magic only, no card game run over 10 years ago, and good job remembering return damage, that is what I used, talk about nostalgia.
I think you were cruel to yourself by restarting a battle due to being hit with Berserk, fair play to your commitment though!
I think in this challange you are allowed to use Quistis's blue magic...because it's magic :)
No because its a limit break
Challenge use only starting weapons, with throw u also can only use the starting weapons, only the first summon u can get for each character, magic only the the first 3 spells u can acquire the same goes for all other abilities.
I would like to so this if u think it's to easy u can reduce the 3 magic and other with 1.
The ff game can be of ur choice
Been working all day was just thinking that a challenge run from yourself would be a great way to unwind - thanks for all your hard work on these, the dedication it takes to finish these runs is honestly commendable!
The grind is REAL
My favorite FF game
nice, i can understand why its an amazing game
You're a madman. FF8 is painful enough lol
Right away: absolutely. i rarely used magic because i used them for my stats, haha
Man this was a blast to watch. I first thought of just leaving it in the background while doing something else but I got completely hooked in the video and lost myself. Amazing work.
Glad you enjoyed it!
i always do diablo when i get the lantern, lower levels makes him useless.
If you have blind that is.
Not only are these always wild and entertaining to watch, but I also typically learn a few new cool tips during these runs!
Glad you like them!
You have much more patience than I do lol
Was there a no meltdown rule? Even though the status inflicted is called 'Vit 0', it also reduces SPR to 0.
yea i just completely brainfarted and forgot it lowered spr aswell
