🌞thanks for watching, friend🌞 I'm curious to hear your thoughts... What does your practice routine look like? How do you find pleasure in playing the handpan? 💚
im at the stage jumping between instruments, ill go for a while on handpan, than didgeridoo, flute, maybe some shaker practice 5-20min each and than long breaks, 0 clarity just letting it flow but yet there is no flow state are you just focused these days practicing on handpan?(+voice :) )
Two years later, me 😊 in the same spot. I love to play the handpan, i love to be able to deliver this to myself and also for others. Thank you for the beautiful reminder about what music is ❤.
Thank youuuuu Amy ! These are the exact words I needed to hear, I've been feeling sooooo much resistance lately thinking I need to 'practice' new things, but love this new approach
Amy, you make some great observations about "the practice" and what many consider "practicing" and your comparison with Buddhist meditation is very apt. I once had a Middle East percussion mentor tell me that whenever he had to be in front of listeners/observers, he saw that as an opportunity to showcase his practice. He didn't think of performance as the result of practice - in other words many consider performance as the goal of practice, but that he was allowing listeners to view him "at his practice." Practice to him was very personal - he is a phenomenal percussionist of many genres. It's wonderful you are thinking about this now as young as you are =] All the best, Amy!
Thank you for all the content. I hope you feel in top form soon ! I played my first short gig 4 days after my first Rav Vast arrived and that was possible thanks to your teaching. How to play for meditation was the savior for that occasion... seriously! Practicing and improving every day. You have my gratitude. Mahalo nui loa - Aloha
Great Video! Feel better soon! I have RAV drums & play multiple times every day. I practice techniques you & others teach for short periods then continue playing whatever comes. I start my day with coffee & handpan videos then play off & on all day out back or on the front porch. Hope to get a handpan this coming year. Then again another couple of RAVs would be great. Practice has become a way of life for me as it takes my mind off physical pain & putts me in a better place. Thanks for sharing this part of your life with us.
Hello wise woman, I really found this video very helpful as someone resists practice I like the idea of the experience being about 'The practice'. also what I am trying now is journaling than recording as away of capturing how I felt . Thank you and hope you feel better soon x
Mmm I like that, journalling the process. We discussed in class yesterday lots of ways to find inspiration when feeling stuck, tuning in and using your own feelings and emotions as prompts came up. I love the idea of reflecting on it afterwards too. Thank you Catherine 🥰
Thank you for sharing your thoughts, getting a different perspective helps. I love the handpan and I was beginning to feel like practice was becoming a "chore" and I wasn't "progressing". I just need to play for the sheer joy of playing. Wishing you a very speedy recovery ❤️
Wise words, thank you for sharing! Funny how language develops & brings together same words with subtle nuances of meaning. Excellent reminder to see the same actions with different intentions that makes all the difference in how we feel about it. Be present in the practice creates joy & flow, instead of the stress of being so goal oriented. Excellent metaphor for life!
great video!! I never really practice the handpan (i own a rav) i just more so play on it and somtimes i can come up with really nice melodies. i usually play late in the evening before i go to sleep and i have done this now for about 2 years. have a lovely day and hope you get well soon! 🌞🌞
I find it to be kind of a circle. Sometime if I play something I like intuitively and really enjoy I try to deconstruct and understand the rhythm or harmony or concept. Sometimes it makes me dive into it and then I learn something new which I then apply to create something beautiful and on and on it goes :)
Thanks very much for sharing this; so profound and well thought through. It applies to a lot of things in life, especially those related to creativity. I will take on board this mindset for my art, as well as my hand pan. Hope you have fully recovered, and back to doing what you do best! :D
Definitely applies to life too! Changing my mindset has been changing my world bit by bit, it's amazing. Wishing you lots of wonderful creativity in your art ☺️
🙏💜😌 thank you for sharing your thoughts. I do agree with you this. For me though, practicing means starting from “rigid” exercises whether it is on the RAV, the didge or the hammered dulcimer then I let go and let the inspiration flow either looking for speed or harmony always trying to feel relax and enjoying the sound, in the moment... Many blessings and healing thoughts... 🙏💜🌞
That's definitely a part of my process too. Finding somewhere that feels difficult, and then finding the creativity within that. I love that, thank you for sharing 😊
Hey Amy. Hope you are fully recovered soon. Love the wood burner, warm jumper and cuppa. What a cosy atmosphere. I appreciate your thoughts. It can be hard being engaged with our passion all the time. It sounds as though you have found an alternative way of thinking about handpan practise which will take the pressure off and bring more joy to your playing as you probably felt at the start. Good for you. Take care and keep being chilled and happy. Much love. Mel. X
Thanks so much for this Amy. First time I heard the word practice in reference to meditation or living mindfully, I was like whaaaaa? The word is a little less scary these days haha. Thanks for offering this insight and sharing it with others! You rock!
You are spot on, about practice. About "Enlightenment,"my teacher might remind you that even the Buddha cried. Pain has it's place Amy. No pain, no gain. "Enlightenment" is not about ridding oneself of pain. It is about keeping it in perspective. No light, without darkness. You know, we could have a long, and quite interesting talk about this. However, maybe I digress. I'm delighted that you're feeling well. Take good care.😷👍🙏
Yesss absolutely! We can (and will) experience pain as an important part of any journey, and we can also make a conscious choice not to suffer from it. I think this is what I was trying to get across. We can just be present in the process, the practice, whatever that looks like, and where there is inevitably discomfort and difficulty, not let ourselves get lost in the suffering 🥰 Thanks for the well wishes, G 🙏
@@AmyNaylorMusic I'm not sure about choosing not to suffer. As I said, I feel that we could talk about this for hours. However this isn't the place for that.

Language is an amazing, deep tool. But also limiting sometimes 🤔 words often don't do life justice, it baffles me every day haha. Thank you Patty

Thanks Amy - a really useful distinction to make - focusing on the process rather than the product :-)

Yess, I can relate to this. The joy of deconstructing a concept and diving deep. I can really got lost in that sometimes
