I'm 68 years old. I've been a HVAC contractor for decades, a woodworker who has made fine as well as hobby furniture, a metal worker, welder, plumber and electrician- I even repair our cars, grow gardens, cut down old dead trees and upkeep two homes, yet I still get bored. When a friend gave me a homemade bar of soap, I fell in love with it's simplicity but ability to last longer than store bought and I felt much cleaner and fresher after my shower. Instead of buying the soap, I decided to make the soap and learn along the way. Obviously I am here to pick your brain and I successfully have done so and thank you for sharing this information on behalf of myself and others. You are bookmarked! LOL. Thanks Again!
This was a long time ago but I’m in NY and my sister is in Florida and even with the FDA if you say that it’s soap and it will get you clean then you don’t have to have the FDA test ur products. If u claim that it’s moisturizing or soothing then u fall under the cosmetics laws and u have to scientifically prove those claims. So you have to market it as soap. HOWEVER, even if u only market it as soap u have to list everything that is in that soap! Everything! U legally can’t just say base oil’s because the average person has no clue what that even means. I have a lot of allergies to medication and to food so if I buy ur soap and something in there causes Anaphylactic shock which is a server allergic reactions here ur tongue swells and my throat closes and most ppl die from that. But They will sue u for everything or if there dead the family will. So I have to put down everything. On my labels I have olive oil, grape seed oil, coconut oil, Shea butter distilled water, food grade sodium hydroxide, sodium lactate, sugar ,salt, mica fragrance oil or essential oil’s bio glitter. If I put my clay in I put that on the label it I add pumpkin I put it on the label if I add oats I put it on the label. And also now u have to have the weight of the soap, your address where it’s made, your website and u have to have a warning label either on the soap or on your website stating that this is a small business and we can not guarantee that there will not be cross contamination. Like I use Walnut essential oil’s. If someone is seriously allergic to nuts ya they can have a reaction off a spoon I used a week before even if it’s been cleaned because that’s how strong the essential oil is and that’s how severe the allergy is. So giirrlll cover ur own ass! I even listen on my shot on a listing I write the ingredients in the description bar and all my warnings. Soap will make surfaces slippery when wet , it could cause slip and fall resulting in injury or death getting in and out of the tub. Do not leave children unattended in the bathroom while using this soap. May make bathing dangerous for children due to slip and fall when soap is wet. This is not food do not ingest, if it’s ingested call poison control immediately and seek medical care , ingestion may cause death or injury keep out of reach of children and pets. If ingested call poison control and seek medical care and call the child’s pediatrician, keep out of eye flush with water if you get this in your eye. If I use essential oil’s I also say do not use use any products that contains essential oils unless discussed with your physician first. Certain essential oil’s can make u sick or cause death or injury if you use them while on certain medications or have certain medical conditions! Do not use essential oil’s on children under the age of 12 unless directed by ur pediatrician if you have high blood pressure speak to a physician before using this soap. This product contains salt and can raise the blood pressure that can possibly cause stroke for those who have severe hypertension disorder. I do hun I list everything on the description including that once the package leaves my hands I am no longer responsible for it. It’s it’s damaged lost or stolen u have to take that us with the United postal service I have no control over the United Postal Service. And I also say make sure that you absolutely want to make this purchase because I absolutely do not refund for any reason! When u check out and hit purchase you are agreeing to the terms and conditions of this contract. Then I also list all the ingredients that u. An see without clicking about products and win my shop u do the most frequently asked questions and I reduce all of this on my shop rules. So no one can say they didn’t know, they didn’t see it, it wasn’t on the package. Cause I have this listed everywhere on my shop on every single product. N I’m glad I did because I have had ppl try to say I didn’t get my package mean while the post off is saying, yes they did. I dealt with that once. $180.00! This girl tried to scam off me and the tracker was showing that that package was in her building! So I had to remake everything and ship it to her but I would only do that if she signed for it! And after that I don’t do that game anymore. So now when ppl try this I simply send them the agreement they agreed to and all of a sudden what a miracle the package just happened to show up. I get an email for every single package that’s been delivered around the world. I know if someone got it or not. But they don’t know that. So my advice if u still do things like this cover ur own ass girl cause the day will come when u have that one person that will be a problem. It’s not worth loosing everything over ya know.
THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH FOR SHARING TAKING THE TIME TO SHARE THIS INFORMATION WITH US! I LEARNED SO MUCH FROM WATCHING THIS . I AM A BEGINNER AT ALL THIS AND YOU HAVE BEEN VERY INFORMATIVE! I WILL BE WATCHING FOR MORE VIDEOS FROM YOU!! LOVE
I like to just toss the entire box of bags up, then quickly grab the 12ga & blast off a few rounds. Seriously... If I sell soap online, I have to "register" etc. with the FDA? The FDA?? PS: Gotta hand it to you -- not only did you learn soap-making, but your're no slouch when it comes to making rather decent videos, either. Thumbs up!
Hi Kimberly. The law was just changed. It says you must put the address of where your product is made. If you list your business name and address of where your product was made in a public directory or online directory, you do not have to put your address on your label. A website address is not a legal address of manufacture.
A little pot of "sort quick" from the office store will help you separate your labels. Or you can try having a little cup of fresh water. Great video and thank you.
thank you for your wonderful informative video!! very much appreciated. Just wondering what could we use instead of plastic, hence there is been so much talk about it..?x
I've been wanting to start selling soap to make some extra money and the more I learn about the business end of it the more scared I get. I am a single mother and I have to collect assistance and I don't even have a car. I've been hoping to at least make enough money to pull myself up a little bit. And it sounds scary. People talking about insurance the FDA all of these rules and regulations I am absolutely terrified. I don't think I'm right in the head enough LOL I just hope the good Lord can give me the strength I need or it may just only end up being a hobby. Either way I love making beautiful things.
Come on! Start with me! Price out your ingredients per ounce(lye, your oils, additives and colorants) and figure out what your cost per loaf is. You want to price at least that so you aren't losing money and if possible multiply by three or four to get your retail price. Divide by the number of bars for your retail bar price. Wholesale would be half of retail price. Once you sell more, you can get your products cheaper in bulk. We've got a good head start on the new year and by then, we''ll be running full steam. But figure out your costs. For me it turned out to be a justifiable expense as an activity or hobby even if selling isn't involved. See if your numbers come out the same.
Hey Kimberly, I'm a McNutt too !!! Your soaps look wonderful!! Great video full of helpful information. I craft melt and pour soap. I'll be sure to check out your other videos and classes. Thanks a lot !
I absolutely love your videos!!! You are so resourceful. I will be adding cold process soaps to my product line in December and am so excited. You gave me some really good information about the labeling and what needs to go on them. Thank you so much. Now I am certain that I know what to to do and where to find the information if I am uncertain. I am going to be making two soaps. I want to do one rectangle and one round. Do you have any videos on how to wrap the round soaps?
I am allergic to every commercial soap I have tried. Do you have a sampler that I could buy? It doesn't take much to determine an allergic reaction.... I have never used a soap I didn't have a reaction to.
I know this isn't a package question but I bought calendula infused oil from Bramble berry and just wondering how I can add it to my MP Soaps ?? I got it for my Baby Bum Balm
Russell Garuti it just shows how confusing the regs are. I was totally mystified when I visited the governmental websites, just the arguments presented by fluffly suds alone made my head swirl. Is it soap? is it cosmetic?, etc.? I bought the latest edition of Soap & Cosmetic Labeling by Marie Gale and that has helped A LOT. I think the big issue is being clear on what your product is, if it is soap and only soap (no claim other than it cleans) it does not need to meet cosmetic labeling standards. Urge you to do your own research and highly recommend Marie Gales book. Hope this helps a bit.
Hello Kimberly!😊 I'd like to purchase those pleated bags, I'm having trouble finding their website, Country Life....Would you be able to provide me with their address or copy a link for me here? Thank you! Love your videos!🌺
Hi. Very informative. What if you don't have a company & you just want to sell a few at a local "This & That" store? Do you need to have all that info on there?? Thanks.
kim i love you and watch all you do but you contaminated your soap licking your finger for paper , just saying to make you aware after all your nice prep,,, ohh loveie
I got 250 business cards from Vista print for $9.99 incl a pic of me :) iv recently changed mine of you look on my page it's the cover pic. As I bought a printer to print my labels tjat I saved the pic from Vista print so I don't need to pay for them to make up 10 labels per sheet..
She took the time to make this video. Say something positive to her - say thanks. Look how occupied she was twisting, and turning. Any other comment could be done discreetly in a positive way to catch her attention.
What would the FDA say? Compared to what? What drug companies put in medications? What fast food companies put in their food? If you're worried about a licked finger and label, you might want to think about things the FDA could better use their time and our tax dollars on.
Actually, Nicky Pixel is correct in making this comment. Many communicable diseases and viruses are spread via saliva and can live for a reasonable period on a piece of paper. Paper is a known problem when it comes to harboring bacteria and such. Perhaps, this comment from Nicky Pixel should be considered helpful advice to the Essential Soap owner. And, the Essential Soap Owner's advice regarding labeling from the FDA is not congruent with the FDA website information. I suggest anyone interested in selling soap look into factual information rather than settling on hearsay from a RUclips video.
Heather Cherry I feel you would do a better job. Post your video on how to package soap so everyone can see you do it correctly. Your help could make the difference

If your making body products and your a Registered business its a must to put what's in your soaps incl colour on your label... it's just common sense
I like how she says...... AwwwwooiLLLLL
It's my understanding that the FDA doesn't consider soap a cosmetic so it does not have all the requirements that cosmetics do.

FDA? What has food & drugs got to do with soap?
Well soap is sometimes made out of food or flavours
+MustaffaCuppa the FDA also regulates cosmetics, which soap usually falls into. Hurray for Red tape.
