    Looks really nice! One solution if you'd want to use aluminum would be using aluminium extrusion (the same stuff most 3d printers use but maybe a bit larger width). No welding needed and you can add the plates with some screws

    For me is, simplier is better.
    I use a small Light stand with a hole for a holder, that can push in and holding in a Magnetic way, different types of mortars.
    So, it is wind stable and you can easily pick it up for multiple locations and for multitime use, you can fast grab the mortar and put it upside down for fast cleaning, the old paper from the shell bevore. ^^

    Remember that air raid siren you made?to get a longer wind down without using weights you can use capacitors to lower wind down without weights giv it a try
