Im 52, from Romania, and in 1978 the Ceausescu's Communist regime was broadcasting this movie on TV (on bw tv sets of course). Other western series that we had: The Saint, Mannix, The Persuaders, Forsyte Saga, Onedin Line, Long hot summer, Invaders, Rich man poor man, Dallas, Cannon, Toma, Kojak, Columbo, Daktari, Flipper, Fireball XLFive, Gentle Ben, Dennis the menace, Lost in space, Planet of giants....etc etc...... RIP PETER GILMORE.
dont worry we had b&w's in oz too...well until the mid 80's....and the persuaders theme always reminded me of Hungary....the japanese stuff was big here....astro boy, prince planet, shintaro, phantom agents, starman...etc...lol....what daze.
I remember my grandfather used to watch this in the seventies when I was a little girl. I watched the series when I was 15 as they had it as a rerun on swedish tv. It´s one of my favourites.
This was from a time when they made tv programs with substance and merit. There was no need for foul language, sex or nudity to get the point across; just good acting, scripting and production standards.
Last evening I have listen to this music for the first time in years, brought back to my memory from someone dear. My Mum loved this music and the movie. I remember when she used to call around the house: "The Onedin starts" and she was so delighted...such a beautiful music and movie...❤❤❤
This beautiful song was played at my mother's and step fathers wedding. My step father is a descendant of Fletcher Christian and he has just sadly passed away from pancreatic cancer. He has requested that this song will be played at his funeral. R.I.P John Christian Halton xxx
I remeber this from my childhood. I never saw one chapter cause I always fell asleep during this beautiful theme. And today I use this theme when I put my children to sleep ..
Ah, what beautifully inspiring music. Makes me forget about the challenges of life for just a moment and just reflect upon all that is good in this world of ours.
In my boyhood, it was not the show that grabbed me so much as this beautiful soaring theme. Those big ships were Australia's lifeline out of Britain, and vice versa. We adore tall ships down here. Sydney Harbour is still home to many of them.
Took me ages to remember one this brilliant show, I was only a young teen but loved it. I love the romantic music, it's beautiful. Why on earth has this never been repeated in tv since !! One of the best Sunday night programmes I remember watching with my Mum and Dad .
My parents let me stay up a bit later to watch this wonderful programme, and savour the magnificent music. I had a big crush on Anne Stallybrass, too. ❤
Magnificent music - when I was a kid, this was my favourite theme music on TV, followed by Robinson Crusoe - and, I'm surprised to find myself saying -The Andy Williams show (With Mr William singing the beautiful 'Moon River'). Amazing how effortlessly music takes you back to other places and times. What a delicious feeling!
Wonderful series and oh the eternal theme tune. For those that have never seen it I highly recommend you do. The lovely Peter Gilmore and all the characters make this a must see. I was 21 when it first aired on BBC1 and now look back on it with very fond memories.
The MERE idea of using that Adagio from Spartacus theme for the Onedin Line plus giving the audiences a customized, fuller lush Hollywood-like orchestration deserves already an Oscar. The TV orchestration is even better than the original. It was the spineshiverer of our childhoods. Gooooorgeous!!
Thank you for the greetings! My other favorit from this time is DERRICK! My parent's generation was hungry for the freedom, more than other things in their life ever! We wanted this feeling for us, and wish every nations in 80's! I was 16 at this time, and I tryed to understand what happening! It was a sentimental moment of the XX.century's history! I'm was very happy about this gift for the german people!
In the early 1970s my parents took me to Yugoslavia on holiday. We met some peasants up in the mountains who spoke decent English. Dad asked how they learnt it. Their reply? By watching the onedin line. Bizarre!!!
Série vue dans les années 90 ...que j'adorais parce qu'elle me faisait rêver. La BBC à toujours produit de vraies merveilles! Péter Gilmore était parfait....
This reminds me of the summers of my yought. Pure nostalgia. It feels like life was easier. It probably was not but without computers and cell phones people still took the time to talk. Yes, it was nicer.
Hi guys, The boat used for the Onedin line was my great great grandfather's. It's been in my family for over four generations now. After using it for the Onedin line it was returned to the family without the dome glass that protected it. Years of sitting on a shelf with no TLC left the boat a little rundown and in need of repair. In 2003 that's exactly what it got. The boat now sits in a two and a half foot long tank, made of glass and wood. It has new sails and new paint. (Black & Red)
Me I was young too. Watched this program together with my parents and little sister. Didn't care all that much about either the show or the music. Now I realize both are awesome.
The ship Kathleen and May, that ran down and drowned my uncles in Kinsale Harbour, Cork ireland in the 1950s. They went out in their boat to meet her and the ship went right over them. My mother swears that the captain was drunk but the inquest cleared him. It broke my grandfathers heart he was in another boat and saw his sons drown.
I heard this tonight on classic fm and recognised the theme immediately then Calin Rang I saw your. Comment. It is 4 years old but it touched me. You may never read this but I hope you are well!!
Same here. Beautiful and exciting show it was. So interesting that across the "iron curtain", in Hungary, I was looking forward to watching the continuing adventures of James and his trusty Baines...
I recall the single of this ..on Decca BBC records, sabre dance was on the b side .. I haven't got it anymore. So it's great to be able to hear it here ..thanks for the upload 🌹
I spent most of the 2nd half of 1985 in hospital ( result of a huge car accident) and started watching this every morning at 10 am ( I got hooked on it ) even after I was released home to finish my recovery for the next 18 months watched it most mornings 5 days aweek
I loved this programme as a boy growing up near clydebank Scotland and the ship's sailing on the clyde it's so nice and peaceful music I can smell the salt air
I remember this from when i was a kid here in Norway. My Mom and Dad loved this. Maybe the reason it was so popular here was the fact that the ship they used in the TV series is the famous Norwegian Christian Radich. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_Radich
As well as the theme for The Onedin Line, this piece of music was also in the superb Capra-esque comedy film 'The Hudsucker Proxy'. I'd highly recommend it. Stars Tim Robbins, Paul Newman, Jennifer Jason Leigh and directed by The Coen Brothers.
When the Onedine Line was being filmed in the SW of England my small marine electronics company supplied the R/T equipment used by the production crew. I was up the mizzen mast fitting a VHF antenna when they decided film a storm segment while alongside the Kingswear quay using huge fan, some fire hoses and guys pulling ropes attached to the main mast to rock the ship. That was a very hairy experience. On another occasion Ann Stalibrass was about to give Howard Lang a navigation lesson and they called down to the shipping master who was bellow deck to pass up a chart. Not knowing it was to be filmed he passed up the first local chart that was to hand. When that episode went to air he really copped it from the local fishermen. The chart had the hyperbolic lines used with Decca Navigator printed on it. The music brings back those interesting and happy days
My God...I was so young and this song, these images will remain in my soul until my last day on this planet.
Me too!
Yes, you've expressed my own emotion exactly.
Me too! :)
Absolutely nothing to equal them these days. Vandervalk, Hawaii 5 O. We were rich.
Same!
Beautiful beautiful tune.....reminds me of me Dad.....he loved this programme, the sea and he built boats. He's long gone now....I miss him forever 💗
Yeah, me too. Dad was in the merchant navy for 10 years and loved this show. Gone now since 2016 but will always miss him.

Just reminds me of a late 70’s Sunday night, songs of praise then onedin line, only 3 channels to choose from
Grew up with this. My dads favourite will play it at my dads funeral on the 8th of Aug 2021.
This song was played at my grandad's funeral today (16.03.2020) and It'll alwys remind me of him, rest easy grandad.

This is the first time I’ve heard this in 30 years, lovely memories of life when I first saw it and people were still here.
I was 14 when the Onedian was being filmed on Exeter Quay. Watched it with my Mum. She loved this music. Listening to it now brings her back.

Superb serialul, era bucuria zilei de duminica,o incintare ca si alte seriale de atunci!

That must have been why it was shit then.

Ah that moment when it soars at its crescendo, unforgettable.
I remember loving it. I was a teenager when it was on the television.
I was a boy when I used to watch this with my family. The music is majesty and rich combined... Lifts the heart and spirit.
I was just a kid.. This theme brings back the memories. I really liked this song.

Watched this show as a kid, growing up in a small village in Iceland... Love this anthem even more today than 30 yrs ago.... So beautiful..

My wife watched this series as a child, with her grandparents.
Loved this them and this programme. I ended up working on the QE2 sailing the world.
This wonderful theme usually meant bedtime for me, and still today I can't help but glance at the clock when I hear it! Great memories.
My parents let me stay up a bit later to watch this wonderful programme, and savour the magnificent music. I had a big crush on Anne Stallybrass, too. ❤
Mum and I loved this series. The theme is haunting and beautiful. Miss watching all these period dramas with her 😢
Magnificent music - when I was a kid, this was my favourite theme music on TV, followed by Robinson Crusoe - and, I'm surprised to find myself saying -The Andy Williams show (With Mr William singing the beautiful 'Moon River'). This makes me sad. I'm 52 and I remember watching this with my dad and mum as a child. They're both gone now. Life.

As a youngster, this was one of the tunes that turned me to classical music. So glad it did. Didn't watch the show - bedtime for me!!

I don't remember a single episode (too young) but that ship and the music are indelibly etched in my psyche.

Back from the days when Britain turned out quality tv entertainment. Storytelling in the grand tradition.
The ship in the opening is "Statsraad Lehmkuhl" which has a fixed spot in the Bergen harbour to this day.
A legjobb tv sorozat amit valaha láttam. A zenéje is nagyon szép :-))
amazing!!! It brings so much memories!!!
I'm 51, but now, while I'm watching this, I am 8 again...

Lovely memories of the programme and then working at sea for me.
I remember this from when i was a kid here in Norway. My Mom and Dad loved this. Maybe the reason it was so popular here was the fact that the ship they used in the TV series is the famous Norwegian Christian Radich. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christian_Radich
All I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by , and a great theme tune.
Too young to watch this but I remember the music vividly, so beautiful... I since found out bot was composed by Arum Khachaturian..
Adagio from Spartacus by Aram Khachaturian
As well as the theme for The Onedin Line, this piece of music was also in the superb Capra-esque comedy film 'The Hudsucker Proxy'. I'd highly recommend it. Stars Tim Robbins, Paul Newman, Jennifer Jason Leigh and directed by The Coen Brothers.
Gosh how scary- my parents used to watch this in the UK. I remember the music. Great to hear it again although its made me feel old!
Radio Luxembourg under the covers, crackle, crackle. Lol
One of my mums favourite programmes miss her so much ❤️💔❤️💔❤️💔
Brings back wonderful memories of watching James and his crew.
