Woodturning | Making an Ornament Stand

- Here’s my woodturning process for my ornament stands! These sea urchin ornaments were something that I started making when I was selling my work at the Charleston Farmers Market. Some questions I routinely received were, “what is it?”, “what do I do with it?”, or “where do I put it?”. I’d encourage people to hang them different places and it seemed like customers wanted to keep them up all year as opposed to every holiday season on a Christmas tree. I needed to come up with a stand to show them off and it had to be something that was relatively simple and easy to make while still maintaining an elegant look to match the ornaments. This video will show you my process and how simple they are to make! Thanks for watching!

How do i find out the status of an order from your website? I've sent e few emails but no answer.Order was over a month ago.
Where do you get your sea shells?
Your peace of mind when working with wood is like a mother holding her baby. Watching your movies always gives me positive energy. You are a wonderful person
Although I am thousands of miles away, I am always eager to see your beautiful work. Thank you.
The simple fact that Ms. Harwood shows sharpening her tools is one of the major things that sets her apart from her male contemporaries!
Something often overlooked because it is so subtle; the music and the video. Very well done.
Ashley, I have to say, your craftswomanship is only surpassed by the allure of your smile and the sparkle in your eye. Thank you for a peek at how you do what you do. Cheers.
I'm amazed at the range of your work, from that humongous table that took 2 people to lift, to these delicate ornaments and stands.
I like watching a bit of everything welding, blade smithing, off grid living and now because of you and your great craftsmanship wood turning. Thanks for sharing this and I look forward to watching more of your videos.
I said it a million times before. You are absolutely amazing an incredible artist and creator!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Keep it up.
Your videos are like a massage for the mind, meaning watching you work, and listening to you and the way you explain what you're doing has a comfortable calming effect.
Scary creative epiphany you had in creating the stand for the ornaments! You deserve the obvious pride in yourself for a great idea and more importantly for the multi-disciplined skill sets you have taught yourself that allow you to create beauty.
I am impressed by you on so many levels. Please don’t change. Thanks.
I just want to recognize the great camera work on all your videos. I notice camera technique on movies and videos, and I like the way the camera does not draw attention to itself; I feel like I am in the room with Ashley as she is working! Oh, I also enjoy following along the turning and the process.
Watching this transformation is very therapeutic and soothing. Thank you for an excellent video.
I really liked the way you realized your tool wasn't quite sharp enough, and walked over to the leather wheel and "tuned" it up before continuing. Bravo for adding that into the video. An important part of instruction and learning.
Very cool design. I like the idea of the lead weights in the bottom of the stand to give them stability. I have used lead in the same way on book ends I've made. Melting the lead in a melt pot makes the lead settle into the hole better and not have any rattle.
Seven seconds of an Ashley video is better than an hour of relaxation therapy!
As soon as Ashley starts to get covered with shavings, you know stuff gonna get real. And good. And great. ❤️😂❤️😂❤️
Awesome work Ashley, the stand compliments the ornament nicely! 😍👍🏻👊🏻
Super cool. I really like how you took extra care with the bottom, most people ignore what you don't see.
Your talent is unquestionable but your level of confidence is unmatched. Thank you for allowing me to watch. Awesome!
There are a lot of clever touches in your design for this stand. Interesting!
That is a perfect stand to go with the beautiful Sea Urchin ornament.
Wow, even the stands are works of art, fascinating watching you create
Wow! Another great trip through woodturning with a very interesting and enjoyable person. Just enough explanation and education to both new and seasoned turners, I love the way you show tool use, with the format of "look what you can do" rather than "look what I can do".
I thoroughly enjoy your videos and wish you the best in our world.
I totally agree. Her humility is what makes her videos so appealing and genuine.
It's a joy watching Ashley work!
Beautifully turned. Well mastered use of tools.very creative.

Absolutuley beautiful very nice ornament stand. I’ve been turning pens for about 9 months now I’ve been having a blast making so many different kind of pens. I’ve picked it up rather fast I watched how it was done on you tube and was off and running. I’m sure I have picked up some bad habits along the way but I don’t really know any wood turners around here. I really do enjoy watching you turn bowls and I am sure I will give it a try soon thanks for sharing your videos much appreciated
great to see an artisan at work, simple idea...and beautiful detailing.
This was a very informative video. I imagine Charleston is a bit of a sweet spot for sea urchin ornaments but I do like them even here in PA
And the Signature Ashley Harwood Ta-Da at completion. 😊
Noticed how you left a flat edge at the base to make cutting off on the bandsaw safer. You make it look easy, nice work.
Awesome Project!
Good Job!
OMG you are adorable and so talented. I so wish I could use a lave but have not dared to yet. You Ms. Harwood, are a craftsman. Thanks to your inspiring videos I am thinking about lave again. Have a great week.
incredible pieces of art from the ornament to the stand just beautiful , great attention to detail...
Upstanding, no pun intended. Beautiful as always Ashley.
It is great to see you doing a turning Video again. it has been too long.
Made one of these today great little design 😊🤗
Beautiful!!
These would make nice accent lamps. I imagine that LEDs could be fit into the skeleton itself and suspended by the conductors. There's a bit of sourcing required to find something to use as the suspension wire that would be composed of, or include, two conductors. But if it could be figured out they'd make lovely little accent lights.
You make wood turning look so easy. It would be neat to have the base in the shape of a pine tree as well. Very nice stand!
Cute, clever and so are you!
First time that I watched your channel. Great video. I used to turn wood a few years ago but, life happens. I used to do pens, small bowls, etc. Keep up the great work. Happy Holidays.
I love brown hair and eyes!
Nicely done
Love your work, I have made the ornament stand. Works great. Keep up the good work.
TA-DAH! Love it, thanks for your guidance. Great seeing you in Raleigh!
Very clever idea for your ornaments...love it!
Awesome video, love the customer impersonation.......look forward to your next video....
Even the stand is artistic!!! Nice!
Deceitfully simple, but very elegant!
Hi Ashley
Super Video und eine echt gelungene Arbeit echt klasse.
Immer weiter so.
Grüße aus Deutschland
Ashley is back 😊
So simple, so elegant!
I really want to get a lathe. I have no real use for one, but those things look like so much fun.
Hi Ashley beautiful work your protection gear looks very sci fi btw
Awesome stand! My daughters are so excited to try making their own sea urchin ornaments this Christmas. I need to order the dvd soon. I wish you had it steaming somehow.
One of my new favorite channels. Cool chick !!!!
Wonderful video Ashley. Well done and thanks for sharing!
Молодець майстер своєї справи. 👍👍👍👍👍
This is very pretty. Great craftsmanship.
Hi Ashley. Really enjoy watching your videos. I remember as a kid ( half a century ago!) that I was given a sea urchin shell, and the idea then was to sand the outside and coat with a clear varnish, and it really made the colours pop out. Have you ever tried that?
Ian Richards, UK.
For cutting the wire, perhaps the Xuron 2193F Hard Wire and Music Wire Cutter would work well. I have one and absolutely love it.
Very nice job Ashley.
Ahhh. Thank you Ashley.. Have the DVD, Sea Urchins turned up today and have already used expanding foam but was wondering about the stand...??? I was looking at my dear lady wifes high heels..( just the heels, not to wear you understand) But all has now become clear..Thank you once again.
Very curvaceous stand I love the simple design. Thank you for your video
Muy buen trabajo !!!! saludos desde Buenos Aires Argentina !!!
Thats a nifty Idea...I live on the shores of Nova Scotia so Im defiantly going sea urchin hunting...gotta try this
Great again as usual
Greatings from luxembourg 🇱🇺
I was wondering how you did it.. I went to a woodturning event here in tennessee recently and someone had made one and told me you'd come up with it. Amazing :)
pure elegance thanks
Good work Ashely. Very nice design.
A unique stand to display an awesome ornament! Wishing you continued success!
You make some amazing stuff and have good skills. You did one thing in this video that scared me, you adjusted your tool rest with the piece spinning. The piece has edges and if one of them catches on the rest, by accident or any other reason, it could launch the piece into you. A piece with sharp edges and spinning that fast could do major damage to soft tissue--your body--or even bone damage.
Keep up the good work and great videos.
Hey Ashley
Thanks again for sharing another great video. I purchased your sea urchin DVD a while back. Very informative. Thanks again.
One video I watched and I subscribe right away, hope you make a video regarding safety for wood turning
The full package! I hope your ornaments and hangers sell great! DD
I own one of these and it’s great to see how they are made
Great job!!! Ta Da Indeed!!
Just a friendly FYI, you might try using CA glue on the bottom with very fine wood dust instead of wood glue and the thicker shavings. It will dry super fast and it’s easy to sand. Great work! I meed to get one of these for my Xmas tree :)
What a lovely elegant design!
Love your work Ashley. Thank you so much for sharing.
Great stuff Ashley, it'll be wonderful watching your show grow. ❤❤❤😎😎😎
We have ours from the 2013 AAW displayed on a stand year round next to a demo bowl.
Great turning as always Ashley. I wish I had half of your skill.
Ciao ashley era un pò che non davo una sbirciatina alle tue opere, devo dire sei notevolmente migliorata anche in bellezza personale. Un Italiano
nice job. hola from Mexico
You should make a video showing us how to sharpen a gouge as quickly as you do
Very nice work !
Fantastic as always, thanks for sharing. You've shared a fair bit about bowl gouges/grinds, but I'm struggling to find references to spindle gouges. From the brief clip of sharpening in this video, it looks almost like a similar technique to the 40-40 on a bowl gouge, but hard to tell. if you've covered it elsewhere, sorry I've missed that
Amazing :-) Thumbs up from Denmark
Very clever, and nicely done.
I wish you the world Ashley
BEAUTIFUL
Hi Ashley beautiful work
Hi Ashley...I'm very happy I found your video, it's great... great design and simple to make! I was wondering what type of wire do you use and where do you buy it please?
Thanks again
Julie from Québec, Canada
Hello Ashley. As always I love your work and how creative you are. Could you recommend a quick change tool handle please.
Good job Ashley.
Hi Ashley. Beautiful job. I love seeing your work. I always learn something new. Can you tell me what type of mop you used to buff the bases? Thanks for sharing
Love that massive lathe behind you. Great videos
Ashley you are the Nigella Lawson of wood turning.... You could turn a piece of dowel and you would still have everyones 100% attention lol
