- The Skull Merchant continues to be one of the most polarizing and controversial Killers in Dead by Daylight. Despite the changes after her release, her ability to defend 3-gens and hold the game hostage is still out of control. So much so that even Team Eternal, widely regarded as the best Survivor team in the world, struggled to beat a Skull Merchant with far less hours than any of them.

I still find so weird how the whole lore and gimmick for the Skull Merchant is a hunter/predator, yet her power basically makes her a territorial killer instead of actually hunting the survivors
I feel the way the devs intended her to be played was to use drones across the map to locate survivors and ambush them with the undetectable status that the drones give her. Unfortunately the devs never seem to realise that old adage of gamers optimising the fun out of everything and that if people can use a power in a scummy way, they will.

It's really because of that Exposed status. If she actually had to chase for her downs instead of one-shotting, setting up a 3-gen would be far less viable and utilizing the stealth aspect would be more important.
I mean, in their defense (something I never thought I'd say) knowing where your prey is going to go IS part of being a hunter.

Im late, but, just saying, these guys never fought skull merchant at this moment. Thats why they tried like 3 different strategies. If they would try again, they would win in 15 minutes, a bit too late for that, but not important.

Yes. If the best team need 53min, and that with comms (ok, no to good items and diffrent perks, but still) how is any other team perform, especially on lower ranks. This strategy can be done by someone who just installed and has the perks/addons, and any team not on comms has no chance, and even teams with comms wont be able to do anything, unless they have 5 digits in hours combined
If it was anyone other than Team Eternal, killer wins. Skull merchant doesn't belong in this game
And its a perfect example for why its not even worth playing a game vs her. Always save your daily 1min penalty for skull merchants.

The apology at the end was crazy. Saying the survivors using gen rush was a cheap tactic when he held the game hostage with the most cheap tactic in skull merchants entire play book for 50 minutes is insanity.
I was literally hoping to see this comment. That apology was so disingenuous and arrogant. It made the person playing killer so much less likable (Not that I liked them in the first place.)
Funnily enough, at the beginning of the stream when this game took place, the Skull Merchant was complaining about survivors "holding the game hostage" in a 2v1 with several gens left after applying the same "strategy".

Watching this was very fun but i'm absolutely sure the actual match, especially for the survivors, felt excruciatingly tiresome based on the experiences i had against 3-gen skull merchants.
I got out of a 3-gen SM match where all i had was an item collector build just straight up wishing the SM player would literally go to hell and suffer for all eternity experiencing an IRL 3-gen match against a hell version of SM.
I completely agree, I love playing skull merchant but, I use her drones as a chase power more than gen control. I refuse to use gen kicking perks it makes the game so damn unfun. I need her to change as much as y'all she can be so damn boring.

It’s a bad analogy anyway because Chess which is an actual balanced game deliberately has mechanics in the game to prevent a game not making progress like the 50 move rule and 3 times repetition. This strat does not want to win by checkmate, it wants to win by waiting out an hour and making it impossible for the other side to make progress.
Or as someone else put it, refusing to make your move in a casual game so the opponent gets frustrated and quits so they can do literally anything else.
But what if you run repressed alliance? With blast mine that a big slow down on the killer side

This is still not Ok. With a strategy this simple this man made the best team in the entire game, the top 0.001% to struggle(at least up until the midgame) for 55 minutes. There is no way a team with no comms or a passing skill competitive team would ever beat this without a miracle. By "proving" that this strategy is not like chess only proves that this is beyond broken/unfair. It's a situation where in reality everyone loses. Let's also add that this game lasted longer than a drawn out League of Legends game and then some

And they use a perk slot for that perk ( I also forget what it's called ). also that perk has to charge up for a very long time which wouldn't help much on the first few gens, giving skull merchant easy early game pressure. Also that perk charges while working on gens, which not everyone can be doing at all times. It's not a very black and white issue, games are hard to balance. The real problem is that this strategy is clearly still viable and bhvr hasn't even tried to change it.

If they're farming potential energy, they don't progress the current gen, and time doesn't matter when the skull merchant is going for a 60-minute auto win.

I've never rooted harder for Eternal than this match. I don't ever exit gate teabag, but the catharsis from viewing those endgame bags was amazing. Glad you pointed out their self-imposed nerf with no stacked perks/items, I'd imagine four stacked BNPs and a far off gen for farming 4 potential energies would have made things much easier given they knew who/what they were somewhat going up against.
Oh yeah that would've been exit gate teabags at like 5 minutes and a very angry skull merchant.

Also, you are forgetting that the survivors nerfed themselves with the no duplicate perks items and items nerf and they couldn't use any overpowered items and addons, meanwhile the sm used whatever he So pleased. I think there should be some small changes to her power like, max two drones in range of gens, up the distance between drones, increase the cooldown on putting a new drone out, if players disable a drone a new one can't be put up in that former radius there for a little while. Just little things that would make it harder to hold a 3 gen.
What i liked seeing was how CM91 changed during the match, at first he had music, didnt seem care so much, thought he truly was gona win, then when the gen was finally done he didnt have any kind of music he realised it was not gona be as easy as he originally thought

Yeah, you can even see he got overwhelmed by TE when they had 3 gens at 80%. He clearly didn't know what to do and which gen to focus on next because TE kept weaving in and out into his patrol path.

True even the people I’ve come across in the wild that liked her and I asked why they said that the killer shouldn’t have to be fun for the survivor they should be fun for the killer. I disagree in the sense of a killer’s design being unfun, especially to the skull merchant’s level of unfun and misery. Even them it’s not like she’s fun to play since it’s either stay in one area and kick over and over or get steam rolled most of the time.

Decided to revisit the video and the not-very-good and not-so-old days of unlimited gen regression events. So glad they changed it.
It's actually crazy how long the game lasted. So close, 7 minutes longer and the SM would have won due to the timer. It's even more crazy to think that holding the generators for longer would have beeb perfectly possible if only the player made some better decisions. When all three generators clearly began to gain a lot of progress, the smart thing to do would be to go for an Eruption, all Survivors were injured so it wouldn't have been too time consuming. Even in the video we see opportunities to go after someone who wasn't in a good spot and get Eruption value but the SM decided to kick the gen instead. Especially smart would be to go after Dan and get him out of the match, 3 Survivors would have had much more difficult time breaking the 3 gen in the end. Apparently the player was too focused on the idea of having all 4 Survivors killed by the timer just to prove his point.
Overall, good it's already a relic of the past, great video Otz!
The other day I played against a Skull Merchant with this build. Honestly the least fun match of dbd I ever played. It was solo queue so we couldn't communicate but my teammates actually stayed in the match and we played for like 40 minutes. Still proud of them ❤
Four survivors in comms who know beforehand who their killer is and how he's going to play and it still almost worked. Regardless of how you feel about whether or not this strategy should be allowed, the fact that it worked this well even when survivors have more of an advantage than the game normally allows should tell you that it is too strong.
The fact that it’s completely impossible to beat in solo queue tells you it’s too strong
not to mention the team he faced is considered the best competitive team on the game... still dragged it out for 53 minutes.
Timing out the match is not what I'd call a win. Dude didn't even get a single kill even when they managed to power all the gens. He's a joke on top of Skully being ass.
@@Vulgarth1 That's a legitimate strategy if it is a win condition. Look at chess for example, time is a factor. In chess some people lose by getting flagged on time because they are behind.

I played vs this skull merchant last week and he was the most miserable person to play against and talk to in endgame chat. To add insult to injury had a person give up on hook at 5 gens. He took one chase which was at killer shack and I'm proud to annouce I head on'ed him. He did not chase after that.
Skull Merchant players probably enjoy working at the DMV and watching people wait in line for hours.
Cm9i made a great villain here. Love that he jokingly blamed gen-rushing at the end in a 53 minute match. If you're going to push the limits of an unfun strategy, that's how you do it :D

I am so glad they won this, cause this kind of strategies are the reason ppl quit or never start playing dbd. Seeing something so easy and boring being a good strategy is just mind-blowing and honestly kinda sad.
Honestly them winning this does nothing in that regard unless the devs watch the match and choose to work on making it less effective. Despite winning they were still stalled out for quite a while while having a lot of advantages. This kind of just shows how effective the strat can be and how it pushed even a good well coordinated team

Those were silent skillchecks. Not to mention, they were all oblivious due to her other addon which means they had to constantly look around to make sure she wasn't very close. Their attention was divided on multiple things.

@@goblinking1349 Oblivious didn't matter in a sense they didn't go down because of it. They were still aware when the killer was approaching. However, they screwed up the skillchecks BECAUSE they had to pay such close attention to killer movement due to them being oblivious. Essentially, the addon indirectly caused them to miss skillchecks because they had to divert more attention to following the killer's location.
skull merchants problem is the status effects inflicted by the drones, primarily the exposure. so a temporary bandaid fix would be to change the status effect (exposure) inflicted to survivors, and i think this would be a helpful change for the time being until she can receive a full on rework.
for those wondering, the reason the game ends at 60 minutes is because a while ago, there was an epidemic of blatant cheaters in dbd, and they were putting themselves in the hooked state mid-air which would cause the game to not end after the endgame colapse timer ended for some reason, holding the game (mainly the killer, who was usually a streamer) hostage for up to 2 hours, when the game would naturally close (I don't remember if it was an issue with the game being too long that would cause the server to close after 2 hours or if it was a failsafe they intentionally put in). to combat this, they made it so a game will end after 1 hour, killing any remaining survivors automatically so they aren't rewarded for holding the game hostage and the killer is rewarded if they choose to wait it out.
however, this unintentionally gives the Skull Merchant's gen hostage playstyle a solid win condition, which is very unfortunate. I don't think the issue is with the timer, I think the timer should actually be shortened down to maybe 40 minutes or something at least, but Skull Merchant and/or holding 3gens for long periods of time is the issue here and something needs to change drastically.
However, with the nature of the game's objective being how it is, no amount of changes will get rid of 3 gens, just as is the case with tunneling, camping, and slugging. It's inherently baked into the design of the game's objectives (which were designed for what's basically a completely different game that the devs need to make work with the very different game dbd has become since the gamemode was designed), and we'll only ever see those things be truly gone if we get a new gamemode with a different objective(s) and win/loss condition(s).
this killer player's childish behavior aside, this was good to see and I hope this reminds the community that this is still a problem that needs addressing.
Honestly his childish behaviour was the thing that I hated the most. I would've respected him if he didn't spend 50 minutes mocking the best team in the world and just overall lacking all respect. Many people are applauding him because he's a troll, he's baiting for views and all of that, and I'm aware, but just looking for this match on his stream I saw him slugging, humping, BMing, and just making the game unsufferable for the other players altogether. People praising him for being stupid and disrespectful (some streamers included) is literally the worst part. Then they'll get surprised when someone they made famous actually behaves like a motherfucker and they'll want to cancel on dbdtwt... be for real now.

once gens were starting to progress she needed to go for a down on the person next to the edge of the map. theres almost nothing there and it wouldve been an easy repeat down or kill if they keep trying to push that gen.
Exactly. The skull merchant would have won if she was better at the game. But the player isn’t very good. From what I can tell, he only plays skull merchant and has for months. He is only improving at kicking gens. I think if he was better overall, he could’ve won this game 10 different times.
Funnily enough that's exactly how chess goes, in classical chess the game is stalled until one of them makes a mistake to be capitalized on and vice versa

I saw it happen with the a knight player, where all survivors died after 1 hour, I was watching on RUclips. And he was super confused because he had never seen that happen before either.
the problem I see here is the survivors need incredible teamwork, strong counter perks and perfect reflexes and ability to hit hard skill checks consistently. The killer just has to run around and kick gens/down people every now and then.
I have versed this person 6 times during the event and they are one of the most toxic killers i have ever played against. They would slug and bm you on the ground for minutes (or until someone touched their drones), hit you on hook and face camp, repeatedly nod on the right hand side when you die, and say the same things in the endgame chat “gg?” “playing skull merchant and keeping a 3 gen is like a chess match you wouldn’t understand” and my favorite, “word around the fog is that you are all dog”. I really hope these videos force a huge change for the skull merchant because the fact that people can use this build and play style to get easy 4k’s and hold the best team for 50+ minutes just shows how broken her power still is, not to mention how impossible it is to win against in pubs. Thank you for addressing this player and the Skull Merchant, I seriously hope some changes are made because of it.
