  • How to use Buttock and Waterline together in a half-hull model. The Art of Boat Building presents the third part of half-hull modeling. Boat builder, Bob Emser, guides us through making a half-hull directly from boat plan using buttock and waterlines. Using the plans from the Dark Harbor, Bob shows how to adjust the thickness of lifts and add contrasting wood for above and below the designed waterline. As a bonus the attachment of a rudder to the model is covered as well as how to add a rail lift to the deck. Carved of Honduras Mahogany and Bass Wood this beautiful model is one you’ll want to make yourself.
“If you’re going to make it, make it beautiful.”

Very few people seem to excel at everything they put their hands on. Bob Emser is one of them.

Beautiful half model of the Dark Harbor Bob. The light color of the below the LWL sets off the upper hull color wonderfully. Thank you for the video.

Another beautiful half hull model Bob. The extra work involved to loft the extra FS, BL, WL was great information. Well done once again and thanks for sharing!

I really love these half hull models. They make great wall art. I would use a keyhole router bit to make a nice hole to hang it on the wall. I have built many model boats and watching your videos has me thinking about instead of a half hull model making a full hull model and then using it as a mold for a fiberglass hall. Of course, it would require a release coat. On some boats it could be used as a mold for planking over such as a dory or skiff. Thanks for the wonderful videos and getting my thinking wheels turning.

    Wonderfull fleet you have there!
Handy tip I learned for glue ups, to stop them from slipping around, is to sprinkle just a pinch of salt in between each layer. A little goes a long way. This adds just enough friction to keep the sliding around at bay.

In watching your build, I am finally starting to wrap my mind around the line drawings, how they relate to each other, and how to extract the information from them. I could use a short explanation on how the table of offsets relates to the line drawings and how it is used.

Very nice piece and very nice video(s)! Thank You! Wouldn't it have been nice to add 2 visible hinges to the rudder, made of brass or copper?

That is a gorgeous boat - funny to think how those long graceful overhangs were driven by the rating rules that prevailed at the time.

I really expected something more complicated and boating hardware looking for attaching the rudder. But hey, a couple brads glued/"welded" to the blind side works to affix it to the model. Right? Love the two tone, perpendicular build on this one.
I know you kept saying opposite direction, but we know what you meant, "perpendicular" (at a right angle/90° to). Any way, it cam out beautifully.
Why would you not build this beautiful boat? Are its dimensions too long/great for your shop/shop's door? You maybe could build an exterior boat house like A2A did? I mean if you really want to build that boat. Looks like it would be a beauty. And a fast sailing cruiser too.

I too really like the lines of the Dark Harbour. Seeing that you have the plans, did you at one time consider building it, or was it a deeper dive into it’s study?

When did you start using the UK term Timber in place our term lumber? Timber to me is trees and logs.

I understand what you did but not sure why you chose to construct the half hull this way. Could you explain?
