Bro, I think what you said is right, don't break the link that ain't broken. In the past, Indonesia had a compartment train with beds. However, people used them for sex transactions. I understand this is silly but that's how KAI reacts on that finding.

Lived in Indonesia from the early 90s to the mid 2000s and I’m astonished by how Indonesia have developed A LOT for the past few decades. Before 2004, they didn’t even have a highway from Bandung to Jakarta so we had to drive around 10hrs to reach the capital but now? Luxury sleeper train, high speed rail and a metro system..just wow

The concept of sleeper train was actually existed in Indonesia long time ago. The Bima train was actually the sleeper train first launched in 1967. It was an overnight train with sleeper and couchette facility just like the overnight train in Europe (well, the original Bima train's rolling stock was made in East Germany). Unfortunately, the sleeper train service discontinued in early 90s due to many reasons.
It has been a discussion among Indonesian railfans questioning why apparently KAI insist to reluctant using bed for sleeper train. It started when KAI launched Luxury class, an airplane business class-like accommodation without compartment. The price is expensive for the average Indonesian wages yet it doesn't give the comfort of real sleeper train. There are many speculations about why KAI never interest to use bed for sleeper train. One of the most believed is that the regulation from Minister of Transportation prohibiting the use of lie-flat bed for the land transportation, although it's actually only referred to the bus only. Another speculation is the cost of the operation as sleeper train have less capacity compared to seat train, and KAI always looking for more capacity to gaining more profit. This also has been debated as Thailand also have sleeper train with more capacity, more comfort and cheaper ticket price. Personally, I wish KAI are looking for inspiration into Thailand or Japan who have sleeper train that run on the small gauge railway and still managed to get more capacity, more comfort, and cheaper ticket price.
Anyway, congrats for your experience and thanks for the video. Great job as expected.

Their reasoning for removing the proper sleeper trains back in 1992 was because of the high amount of sexual misconduct occurring inside the coaches, disturbing the views of the little children who also got onboard of the train.
Which is ridiculous, but understandable since how wild the life in 90s Indonesia was.
But I couldn't grasp my what on why they're so reluctant to add them back now.

@@dava_arvarabi I think if they want to prevent such thing happen again they can use mini cabin just like in capsule hotel. I hope it gets resurrected once Sumatra got their lines connected. And I hope every major island bigger than Java got one, that include Sumatra, Borneo (could have Borneo loop line with Brunei-Malaysia-Indonesia linked up), Sulawesi, and Papua (could have north line from sorong to jayapura, and south line from sorong to merauke). With longer route than Java, they would need sleeper train.

13:57 The reason KAI uses seats instead of real beds is because there is a regulation in Indonesia that prohibits travelling in a 180-degree reclining position for vehicles/land transport (For safety reasons). Even the sleeper buses that existed before this train also use seats.

The constant horn is actually for safety protocol here in Indonesia it is called Semboyan 1 and Semboyan 35. It definitely takes years to settle this issue if they want since the protocol usually is very rigid and difficult to change.
Semboyan 1 (one long horn inside train station) must be applied when the train is departing as reply from station master whistle and the train machinists have to depart, clear the train from the platform and they have clearance to pass to the next halt.
While Semboyan 35 (one long horn outside train station) must be applied before the train passing to level crossing (you can found the sign on the side of the rail with S35 marking) which compare it to Europe, we have a lot of it. Although this thing is getting better especially in urban area or certain region who have better fiscal space to build bridge and underpass.

But due to the high cost maintenance and it's not suitable with mountainous terrain (it's frequently got derailed because of that), K9 was discontinued.

I think the reason why KAI insists on installing this kind of seat instead of proper bed is because they want flexibility for the coaches to be operated both for night and day trips as bima trainsets are also shared by day running argo semeru....bunk bed in seat mode is usually 90° upright seat which is not so comfy for longer journey compared to recliner, meanwhile in day trip passengers don't always want to lay on bed throughout the journey, so I think this kind of seat is the compromise for KAI , though I don't think the seat has to be bombarded with tons of gimmicks like this compartment seat, making the price tag unnecessarily more expensive and the seat prone to premature damage...I myself would prefer a true sleeper with proper bed for night trips....

The design of the coach is fabulous, and so are the uniforms of the attendants.

My opinion gets a stronger backup by the fact that Whoosh's price for the business class is slightly more expensive than Priority class in Argo Parahyangan, not to mention the fact that you could go to Yogyakarta with regular executive class by the price less than of First Class in Whoosh.
I think Whoosh won't replace the regular trains anytime soon, maybe one day, but untill now, I think Whoosh is only for those who are strictly in business and wants to arrive as soon as possible.

I think i know why our trains weren't as comfortable as you might think. It is all to do with the track and the carriages itself. We use narrow gauge track, basically the system left to us by the dutch which by itself isn't as comfortable as a normal gauge. Then comes the carriages, although we are now capable of making our own carriages, the train company or KAI did not improve the overall comfort of the suspension in each carriages. I suspect it was all due to the nature of Indonesia. You see, back then we had a train delivered to us from france (look it up, it's called gerbong gendut) and those well i say it was the most comfortable train in Indonesia at that time. But it didn't last long. Due to our wet, humid and tropical weather where one cannot predict the weather itself, it deteriorate pretty fast. And now it sat abandoned. So i think that's the reasons why our trains isn't as comfortable as what you're hoping. Speaking of which, our high speed train uses different kind of gauges which is the chinese one hence it is way more smother. And that's also why, for the maintenance of the hsr, we uses chinese trains instead of our own.

@@NonstopEurotrip You’re right, that would be huge, especially now that they’ve put in so much into newer rolling stock and infrastructure in the narrow gauge. I wish that happened before that.
It would be more of a standardisation that now they are going to extend the HST everywhere, they’ll be operating two different gauges. But then again, that’s probably a good thing to separate the two different types of trains.

I was surprised by the price of 2 million IDR. I remembered it being around 1 million. But somehow its always sold out, so i guess they are just increasing the price because demand is apparently pretty high here. Even at 2 million somehow it is often sold out as well.

There will always be a room for improvement…I agreed that the luxury coach supposed to be always located in the rear side of the train and away from the loco as well as the power engine compartment. KAI should really consider this placement of the coach.
And yess agreed about the price
It’s just way too expensive especially to the fact that this particular coach is still using the old boogey that makes it move a bit shaky along the journey.
However, about the chair, I don’t think that Indonesians are very comfortable using just a “bed” kind of compartment. We love to use this kinda of multi function chair/bed.
Well, it’s just preferences, right? Just like how Indians love their fully bed compartments so much.
Me personally, really like this compartment coach so much (especially that massage feature, ough they’re so good😊)…but again, all I have to complain about is the ticket price.

indonesia use narrow gauge (1067mm) instead of standard/wide gauge have something to do with the bumpy ride quality. it's is known that narrow gauge is cheaper to built and more suited for indonesian mountainous geography. that's combine with the fact that japan also use one and indonesia is known to import many ex-japanese commuter line also contribute to why KAI uses them as standard gauge for indonesia

Actually, from what I learned, Dutch built standard gauge at that time. But when Japan came, they changed the gauge to the narrow. That is what we have until now. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I hope Indonesia introduces normal AC sleeper coaches (like those in China, India, Vietnam etc) for overnight trains.. Sitting for 10 hrs overnight is a tiring journey.

Nice video. Small point: The correct translation of "Don't speak Indonesian?" in your opening subtitles is "Tidak berbicara bahasa Indonesia?" The word "jangan" does mean "don't", but in the exhortative sense, used when telling someone not to do something ("Don't!")

Maybe i wont be able to to a trip with it so thank youbfpr your video and especially your honest review 😊

12:09 I think this compartment class will be stay exist by _KAI_ because the Indonesian Government will offer the passenger with 3 service options, for that long distance system, either from Surabaya to Jakarta and returned:
    1. Whoos Southern Line 350 Km/hour
    2. Domestically Made Red and White Electric Diesel Bullet Train By PT.INKA with 250 Km/hour Northern Line
    3. All Class of Regular Train by KAI service like this one 120 km/hour.
By the way, who's better about the Flagship Rail Systems in South East Asia? Indonesia or Malaysia?

Actually I like the concept tho, I want to sleep while able to see the scenery, many sleeper train doesn't have bed that facing the window. Also I like that I can have a chair so my head won't get tired watcing the scenery while sleeping. Extra points, I love how private it's with just one people per room instead of two people like how sleeper train usually have. Agree with how noisy is it tho and also how expensive it's for the local.

it is not their choice not to have a bed bro. The regulation of the government through the transportation ministry , prevent such thing. For safety reason, somehow, the regulation stated that only 170 degree maximum reclining seats are permitted. I dont really know the reason for this limitation.

  • @BagusWidyanto_HappyIn1997
    @BagusWidyanto_HappyIn1997 9 месяцев назад

Your assessment of the train truly represents what I thought about the service. It's not a sleeper train, nor remotely is it. It's a sitting coach with a fully reclined seat. Real sleeper trains would have featured sleeping bunks, like all other sleeper trains.
It's a glorified sitting coach, or perhaps a moving lounge. Not a genuine luxury sleeper train.
Ironically, back in the old days, Indonesia used to have the proper sleeping train, complete with comfortable bunks. Guests would also enjoy meals in the dining car, not in their cabin.
Alas, that service was terminated in 1980s.
So when they revived the so-called sleeper service, they took wrong reference: airline service, instead of real sleeper trains.
