    A pro tip: If you decide to use this technique when exporting, make sure you enable a linear phase mode at the bottom of Pro-Q3. This way, there will be no phase cancelation. (Essentially, your track will still stay cohesive throughout)
    I recommend Linear Phase - Low or Medium modes to maintain the transients of the sound. Just a friendly tip.

    • @joshsmith7812
      @joshsmith7812 3 года назад +1

      @@rohanshiralkar391 it doesn't maintain transients, too much linear phase and you'll actually be removing them.

    • @shinyukomusic
      @shinyukomusic 3 года назад +7

      @@joshsmith7812 The phenomenon you speak of is known as transient smearing. This is caused by the latency required to preserve the time domain when using linear phase, and then being compensated by the DAW. It is known as pre-ringing most commonly, and cannot mathematically be avoided. Linear Phase filters are usually not necessary in most scenarios, however, when processing content on a full mix, it's quite important preserve time relationship amongst audio material, for that the overall sound can sound a bit "warbly." Pre-ringing usually goes unnoticed, especially in a scenario like this. Now, directly, pre-ringing doesn't cause transient smearing in itself, imperfect delay at certain frequencies does. It's mostly noticeable in the low frequencies. There's only two linear phase filters that have equal delay at all frequencies, and perfectly preserve time relationship of harmonics so that no transient smearing is present. But they are expensive, and there's no harm and shame in using a low-medium modes in Pro-Q3 when processing on a full mix. Hope this helps.

  • @MrEmperorSoon
    @MrEmperorSoon 3 года назад +35

    I would recommend this as a diagnostic tool: Check what frequencies are unbalanced, and then track them to the individual source(s) that is(are) causing the problem, and fix those individually. This approach on the master is less natural, and more of a solution of last resort, rather than a first best.

With that said, I use pink noise match EQ on pretty much all of my master chains, though only very subtly.

    I've seen this trick before and it could help you achieve better mixes. But honestly I'd rather use reference tracks on individual sections of track and dive back into my mix and fix the elements that are causing issues. Applying an EQ like this might sound good on your drop drop but it could ruin your breakdown. I you want to use this method, I recommend using very small percentages and small cuts/reduction with linear phase.

    I use match eq as an op ass reference. It even has a gain match mode. I’ll just get a song done and compare it to one I like. “Oh damn. There’s a huge deficit in 2-6k. Well. What instruments do I have that could be boosted without making my gain staging actually ass?” Usually I’m a dude who doesn’t add enough 100-200hz or enough 3k and up hz. So, I usually just have to add some parallel saturation to a sub, and boost my cymbals/ noise and I’m good…..when I say usually, it’s 100% of the time. For some reason, my ears hate high end and low mids. So, it’s to the point where I’ll get a mix done. Than boost those frequencies. Thaaan I’ll just check match eq, and at this point, I have a 95% accuracy when it comes to matching au5’s cryptochrome mix…..which, honestly. I dunno if that’s a good thing. Cuz, I find that between genres, the definition of a good mix varies.
    Like, Flume says “hey. You know 600-900hz? Naw….Bye. They are gonna be loud because I compressed them to oblivion.”
    Noisia is all like “hey. Uuuh. 300hz. Lol. Tf is that? We’re all about everything but 300hz.”
    Vr is like “hehe. ^\/--. We all about that horizontal high end….also, I like noisia. So 250-300hz can die.”
    Oh yeah. And au5 is like “b-but. -4.5db per octave….300hz is nice if you get to know it….it’s ok 300hz. We’ll show them.”
    The funny thing is that, all of their mixes sound great. But, they are all sooo different. Yet, perceptually balance. Which leads me to say this….eq matching is not perceived eq matching. If your low mids are compressed to oblivion, they are gonna stand out at a quieter level. Same with highs and stuff. That’s because, when you compress something, it’s frequency kind of spreads out into the other frequencies. It’s why you can isolate the sub of a track and hear the leads. But it’s still like, clean. If the lead is predominantly in the low mids, but it’s compressed, and the low mids are quieter, you will hear it more in the high end and low end. Which, kind of gives you the illusion of low mids. And same with everything else. So if you did the same thing, and also have a “balanced” mix…It’s gonna sound muddy. I suspect that these frequencies are lower in more popular artists because, something to do with radio and industry standard live mixes. I dunno what that would be. But, it’s like, there’s a certain level of unbalanced that is kind of standard. And I’m not exactly experienced enough to explain why that is.

      The pink noise fills up the whole frequency spectrum evenly. Your song for example has too much happening in 200hz and too little in 6000hz. EQ match compares perfectly even/balanced pink noise to your unbalanced song and tries to make your song more even/balanced in frequency spectrum.

    I'm not sure I understand, how do you get YOUR profile of noise, you just hit record and wait for a couple second on a track? You just set up a random mic?
