Some ten years ago built my stock stroke 340. It's a budget combo, based on parts I either had laying around or bought for good price. The heads are closed chamber W2's that I just cleaned up. Factory valve job, never flowed. A single plane Edelbrock and a 750 Holley. Roller cam with some 260+ at .050". Flat top pistons, CR about 12:1, 1 3/4" headers with 3" exhaust and mufflers. I expected it to make about 500 hp at 7500. It did, 587 at 7000, and 490 ft-lb torque. Those definitely are great heads for 1970's design.

Not that amazing considering gen 1 and 2 Hemis were both already long dead production wise. Point is, those heads showed they knew how to get ports to flow.
What made W2's good was they fixed limitations in the OEM heads because of class rules I suppose. If they were racing big block Wedges like small blocks then they might've supported them better in the 1970s - discounting Max Wedges they eventually got around to it but it was drag race driven. I liked the Stage VI wedge heads because if fitted on a low deck, a raised deck intake can bolt on with no mod; that and they flow pretty good. With low deck strokers these days companies like Trick Flow should offer this feature because there's hardly any low deck intakes compared to raised deck intakes and it would make life a lot easier. I digress LOL.

One of the problems with the stage VI's was their use with RB block. One intake available for a short period. Others were supposed to use 3/4" spacer that made a Z to the port because of the intake flange angle. Out of the box they were horrible, the quality was maybe even worse, and homeported they were in the 300 cfm range. Trick Flow 240's in the same bench out of the box exceeded 330.

Why use 3/8" valves in a318, 340 or 360? I would install guide reducing the stem diameter to a minimum of 11/32", possibly smaller if I was looking for performance. Of course, I never owned a Mopar engine.

The guides are borderline so that will be a discussion. Thanks

That is an excellent route but it won’t be taken on this “810” head. The heads came to me complete and somewhat ported. The 3/8 valves will remain to keep it cheap and Charlie will be showing me where and how to port the head some more.
The other W2 heads with the closed chamber will see a valve stem reduction though actual diameter is to be decided later.

    Great content on rare parts.
Someone needs to get you some old tunnel port Ford heads and a FE SOHC to flow.

Hi Charlie ( and Rob ) What years were those heads made? Those intake ports make the old Chevy bowtie heads look not so nice. I have never seen those before . Thanks for sharing. Andrew

Late 70's the bowties were about 1980.

Bob mullen started the design work in the late 60s mopar picked them back up in mid early 70s when the big blocks were being phased out of production and production based race classes. Engineering wanted to put them on the little red express in 78 were on the prototype press truck but the bean counters said no. Some of the exhaust port went into the later 308 la head and the magnums. 70 TA 340 heads are the only production head to get the badly needed offset intake pushrod holes and rockers. That the W2 pioneered for all future mopar race heads. Should see some pictures of the DLI stuff from the 70s when they were the head being used by race teams blow your mind how much power potential is in an offset rocker mopar head.

There's a reason that head has been banned from racing classes since it was released in the 70s till today it still is. Breath on them and your over 300cfm legendary

@@JT-ko3rv As I remember, the first public mention of the W-2’s was on the Little Red Express prototype, as you said. I remember there being a lot of let down, when the heads didn’t make it on to the production version. Also seem to recall they were looking to put the same motor in Aspen R/T, that obviously didn’t happen either.

W5 started the aluminum heads Ended at 8 or 9 with the sprint car pro stock truck heads.
