The fact that Animal Handling isn’t a skill was bad enough for Cats and Dogs, but with Cottage Living it just goes into being ridiculous. You should not be an expert at handling and taking care of so many creatures without any kind of study, especially if you’re dedicated to hard farm work or being a vet!
That’s what kills me about this game, the logic and flow that the other Sims games had (to an extent) is just completely gone. Everything is seemingly made individually with no thought to how it’ll play with anything else, even the base game. This game costs nearly $1000 at this point with all of the DLC. And it’s not even worth a tenth of that.

Oh man, out of all the Sims packs, this really should've been a challenging one. Caring for farm animals? That's one heck of a job! But The Sims keep offering way too easy easy-way-outs. Why does everything have to be so helpful and why don't we ever get something unexpected that hinders you in your gameplay and forces you to rethink? At least something mild like the wild birds and rabbits sometimes giving you a bad gift with a negative effect instead because nature is unpredictable or doesn't share your sims' view of what a good gift is? An easily stoppable fox stealing an egg is... oof. Can we get something similar to the fascination and dread from when your Sim became cursed by mummies in the Sims 3 World Adventure and you had to drop all previous plans to fix it within seven days or your Sim dies? Work opportunities that can go so wrong you actually get fired like in Sims 2?
A lot of the time when I play Sims 4 I feel like I'm playing with training wheels on and I'm not allowed to take them off. Sims 4 feels made for an entirely difference audience than the previous games and as someone who's played since Sims 1 I feel like I'm being treated like a child by the game itself. I aged up while the game aged down. There are ways to make your game more including to more age groups but what EA is doing, is just not it. They've got such nice ideas, but something is just not quite working out. Also I miss burglars, I seriously miss being robbed. Rob me EA, but not with this type of content.

Every time there's a break of "reality" from it, such as my cat answering the phone, I immediately quit. Every time I have a sim go on a date at a restaurant that's in New Crest and a celebrity decides to literally butt in so I can't do any of my goals (or really anything else for that matter), I quit. Mods can't save the game anymore for me. If I didn't get spoiled by the "prettiness" of Sims 4, I'd go back to Sims 3.

I think that this pack is another perfect example of the fact the base game itself and the Sims 4 in general cannot be fixed and even a desirable feature can’t bring enough replay value to the table. LOL!!, and only bought a couple add-on packs - there just isn't any value in them compared to the rest of the gaming market. And there's no challenge because it's now a kids game, really. Their target audience has changed and there is about $5 worth of value for each expansion pack - nowhere near the $40 price tag. Instead of buying lackluster 'so-called' expansions, I buy brand new, challenging full-feature games for the same price or less on Steam. I do think if the sims 4 just made challenges like that, it would be a fun game. Something like own a mega farm of 20 golden chickens, craft 30 golden treats, gather 20 golden milk. This would just be one big quest.
Also i really dont like how satisfaction points have no purpose. The rewards in the reward store arent worth getting so you never want to get any points in the first place.

    • @skelar1315
      @skelar1315 3 года назад +7

@@SevenEllen I disagree, the aspiration/lifetime wants are part of the core gameplay of any sims game and the way they handled it in ts4 was horrible. Maybe you were the type of person to just throw your sims in a new save and do whatever you want but a lot of people weren’t. Your sims’ “goals” were part of how you played your game ESPECIALLY for wants based players who only do what their sims wants. I’m no where close to a wants based player but I still tried to complete their “goals”.
The sims games are games and games are supposed to be rewarding (well most are, that’s why we have fun and keep coming back!). In the past sims games you finished your “goal”, got some kind of points, and then used those points to buy something extremely helpful or fun for your sims. TS4 have some helpful stuff in its rewards store but nowhere near as satisfying as in past games. This causes the game to not be fun for people and also makes a lot of the sims in TS4 feel the same because pretty much every sim feel like they have the same end goal, death.

I'm kinda surprised tho that if you put 2 barns next to each other with moveobjects, lama and cow won't run into each other (even if both of the space are into the other)
BUT I had 8 hens and they just are bugged into each other, so yeah... X')
The other bug I've found is that in the village festivals, the mayor only give a price to one of the contest and not the other one... Or she doesn't even check your participation 🥺

I could be completely wrong about this, but early access almost ensures bugs. Generally, if you get a game in early access, you're becoming a play tester.
Devs will test to how they code (i know this personally, and it's really, really hard if you don't plan on what the consumer will do), qa tests to how they might break, but it's the consumers that will find the bugs by doing things you'd never expect, or don't have the patience to keep trying until the bug shows.

    • @catelynh1020
      @catelynh1020 3 года назад +2

      Case in point:
I got the expansion. I had a sim that i wanted to age up early and so i made 2 sims make a cake with the simply living lot challenge. When i moved the cake from the coffee table to the kitchen table, i couldn't add candles to it.
Thinking it odd, i reset the object, left the lot and returned, and had them bake a different cake. Still no candle option.
My sim aged up and i tried again. I had him make a different cake from the other 2 and it worked. So i tried the other two cakes, which also worked. Then i had him and another sim make a cake and it did not work. So group cooking a cake means that cake can't be used for aging up. That's not something people would come across casually in testing. They wouldn't test every recipe, just a handful if they need to check animations or successes. Group baking a cake and putting candles/wedding topper on it would not be a test case.

I have a hard time understanding what even is the point of this pack. Why bother adding farming mechanics if they have no progression attached to them and they only end up making Gardening even easier? It's like a non-feature at this point.
I was considering buying this for a farming playthrough but I think it's best not to bother. At least with base game and Seasons, gardening requires you to DO something instead of succeeding on the back of magic chickens and friendly birds and bunnies.

It's an issue that persists in most of the packs, but I think it's been especially obvious from the last few in particular (I'm looking at you, dust bunnies). Design a feature or gameplay items, slap on some quirky text descriptions and boom, ready for launch. Is the drop table well adjusted? Does the feature reward the player too little or too much? Does it create obvious gameplay exploits for things such as simoleons, skills, etc? Who cares, we gotta ship the pack out in 2 weeks, little Timmy or Samantha won't care about that stuff any way. I mean, it all depends on what your gameplay style is at the end of the day. I would probably never go for golden chickens (at least not have them actively help in the garden), because I prefer a bit more "realism" to how I play. I also barely play any challenges (the only one would be rags to riches, but I don't even want my sims to become super rich at the end); I'm quite inspired to go for a StardewValley-esque experience with the new pack, and can't wait to have the new world be perfect for it, with all its lore and tight-knit feel to it. I don't need to rush my sims to make huge cash money as fast as possible, I enjoy taking it slow and maybe even expierence some hardships with the new lot challenges. Kinda excited how many of these I'll use and how they'll affect overall gameplay. I still much prefer TS3 over TS4, but I'm willing to give this one a chance because I'm seriously craving some cottagecore vibes with lovely animal surrounding my sims.

-farming (cows and chickens) is a set in ts3 store and costs 1500 sim points, they don't try to sell it at the price of an EXPANSION, like ts4.

I wish they’d take Sims 3: World Adventures and create something akin to that personally. I miss exploring Landgraab Mansion and getting burnt by a dozen floor fire traps because I forgot to check the floor for traps. I’d usually run out of vacation time trying to solve the mysteries of the mansion and then have to wait for the cool down period to end in order to return and resume.
I loved the beauty and mystery of the Egyptian pyramids. The Chinese temples were always so much fun.
I could play Sims 3 with these wishes, but then I’d quickly miss the stability of Sims 4. Maybe this is why Sims 4 remains simple… because it only has a simpler game engine at the core. Maybe the game engine of Sims 4 cannot be reworked for complexity of puzzle solving that Sims 3 had.
In honesty, if there will be a Sims 5 in the future, just make it a stable version of Sims 3.
EDIT: And keep the CAS build engine of Sims 4. My favorite part of Sims 4 is the build mode. I buy the packs to get more ‘exploration’ places.
tbh, my fav Sims 4 pack is still Strangerville because of the puzzle solving and creepy infected Sims.

While there is nothing wrong with those who prefer building and like Sims 4 as it is (no judgements there), EA can't have a clear picture of what the entire user base wants so long as those of us who want deeper gameplay pay for shallow but pretty content. It's up to each player to realise they collectively have power to impact EA, but only if those who truly want gameplay as a priority don't buy any more content until EA is impacted enough financially to notice, care, and evolve their strategy.
The whole, "It's still pretty so I'll buy it on sale" mentality is good (again no judgements) SO LONG AS people realise they are providing EA with no business reason (financial impact) to add deeper gameplay. As much as we'd like EA to care about the entire community, that's sadly just not how most publicly traded companies work. Shareholders tend to mostly care about profit and so long as that keeps increasing, they are happy.
re: your reporting on Sims 4, Carl, while I feel sad at your own sadness/frustration, I greatly respect and admire you for your honesty and integrity. You are doing a huge service for our community and are loved by many. Your frustration, is our frustration. Thanks for keeping it real and being a voice for an undervalued (by EA's actions) subset of the community.

Yes, maybe cross overs that make sense.. but a celebrity in a small town should be super rare (and depend on their peronality and traits etc) and should be a nice surprise, especially compared to a city or whatever. Adventure types should pop up in random places more and athletic sims skiing and stuff while magic Sims would more likely spawn in places with rare items etc..all that should count for something. You know, some forethought, care, effort, continuity and TLC.

I like seeing the different POVs from people playing. You have James Turner doing the deep dive in a LP, which gives you an idea of the possibilities.
Then there's Carl who's test plays expose all the bugs and there's no fluff - except that at least the animations are good 😉❤ Least I'll have some enjoyment over how cute it is to see a Sim snuggle a baby chick 😅
I wonder if the bugs are mostly because of the huge patch update, which will take them months to fix probably, or maybe they forgot to unlink some of the new features from the new pack so they function on their own.
I can't even order seeds.... rather, I can, and the Simoleans disappear, but there aren't any seed packets in my inventory. Which might be related to the "Zoomer" bug?
Either way, thanks for the heads up. I still like the concept of Cottage Living (it's definitely the aesthetic, who am I kidding) but good to know it's longevity of being "fun to play" is about the same as all the other EPs.

I also do like the fact that townies seem to have a life beyond my control, and stories that I can dig into without playing them specifically. The biggest downfall of this pack, however, is that gardening was made easy and therefore making money is easy, but if you stay away from treats, your funds should stay on normal levels.
