- Working hard to keep you all updated! In this episode, we also switch our off-grid internet from Nomad internet to AT&T Business hotspot. So far so good! I will keep you all updated! Also in this video, I explain our Off-Grid solar system by Unbound Solar. I explain the home screen on the midnight control panel and I had been searching for a video just like this so I could understand it a little better. Hope this helps! If you have any recommendations or feedback please let me know! Can't wait to share the progress. Follow me on Instagram for daily updates! @alliejcurtin
#GoingOffGrid is hard work, but it will be so worth it! We could not do this without the help of our family and friends! Since May we have been renovating this abandoned cabin and turning it into our full-time home! We are moving into our #oneroomcabin ! We still have a lot of renovations to do but it is almost complete! #cabinrenovation #movingoffgrid #offgridhomes #livingoffgrid #cabintour #cabinhomes #offgridsolar #goingoffgrid #cabinmakeover

Growing up together as high school sweethearts, we got married at 19 in August of 2016. We have always dreamed of a life of adventure! We started traveling the US any free weekend we had, finding free campgrounds wherever we could, and even converting our truckbed into a home for three weeks to make the trip across the country. After 4 years of college and 2 corporate jobs, we decided this typical lifestyle is not for us. Because of RONA, our jobs let us work remotely full time and so we decided to take the leap. We started this #goingoffgridvlog to share our experiences with friends and family, but hope to share helpful tips along the way! We have no plans to slow down anytime soon, and we are incredibly thankful to be able to jump into this lifestyle. :)
I like this vlog style :) keep em coming, you’re doing great!
Thank you so much! I really appreciate it :)
Keep the videos coming, do them as a day in the life. It's better than trying to stage it. Just keep it real. We all get and understand that. Your getting a whole new skill set with all the things that are you're doing. It gives others the hope that they can do stuff like this themselves. I think it's great you guys both jumped feet first into this cabin and learning as you go. These will be lessons you guys will probably never forget and things you can tell the grandkids when your old and gray and rocking on the porch! Homesteading is the best!
So true!! We are just enjoying the journey and adventure that is homesteading. Can't wait for what's to come. :)
Keep them coming just how they are!! They are amazing I love them it shows how much you enjoy life :) also you should do a barn door for your bathroom it would not take much room and it would also blend in with your style.
Thank you! I really appreciate the feedback. :) I love that idea! I was thinking the same thing. Now just to figure out the logistics 😂
I like how they are now! Vlog styles are great!!
But a few videos of transitions of projects would be nice when they’re done! Just as kind of a fast update
Thank you! Love that idea. I want to make sure I show before and afters for sure! It’d be fun to see the transition of each space. :)
For the drywall corners you use a strip of corner bead. It protects the edges of the drywall from getting beat up.
I like how you have been doing the videos already. If you have little craft projects or recipes or how-tos those could be separate to make it easier to find, though.
Yes! That's so true. I definitely should have looked it up first. We will see how they hold up. 😅
@@alliejcurtin No biggie. Drywall is easy to repair. In my last house I had to repair 42 holes after we had the knob and tube wiring replaced. You learn a lot just by doing things so don’t worry about having “no” experience. You’ll learn and the next time it’ll be easier. I’m excited for you guys to get some good weather. That will make everything seem easier. Being damp, cold, and ankle deep in mud just wears you down. I live in the Pacific Northwest so the rainy season is basically October to June, so I can relate.
@@alliejcurtin Oh, and while I’m rewatching, you could look up how to make cheap DIY storm windows, they would help with the cold in the winter.
You should totally make that cabinet next to the fridge an open pantry!! And then do an open closet thing in the loft with your bed
Love those ideas!! Thank you. :)
I don't run an youtube channel, nor do I aspire to, but I watch and follow a variety of styles of channels. One theme I discovered is that VLOG style content helps bring continuity and consistency to the channel. Build a dedicated audience and subscribers. This an be good for the daily grind. Recap videos with catchy titles after a project is done and/or product reviews can be used for mass appeal and generating views. So, if I were you, keep working on the vlog, post recap videos of single projects when they are done, post reviews of the products you are using - and hope the for best!
I like the videos Vlog style with a couple specific ones I between. 🙂
Perfect. That seems like what it will turn out to be. :)
We live off-grid in New Zealand. Solar & a water wheel. In summer the water gets super low in the river so flow is almost nothing through the wheel. We have 6 x 190watt solar panels into 8 deep cycle batteries.
Even in summer we get those days where it’s overcast & we get hardly any power coming in. So, we top our batteries up with our generator. It’s just something we’ve gotten use to.
Exactly! Something you just learn to live with. Now that we understand the readings better we can save when we need to. :)
@@alliejcurtin We haven’t done this yet but we can hook our generator up so when our batteries drop below a certain voltage the generator starts up automatically.
We have to build a good gen & pump shed first.
We have a header water tank up the hill so every couple of days we pump from the big tank up to the header tank instead of leaving the pump going all the time & drawing off the batteries. In low times the pump gets plugged into the gen after the batteries are topped up 👍
Vlog style is great, but we also love to see progress, projects and time lapses! They’re so satisfying to watch. Maybe you could have a day reserved for uploading vlogs and another less frequent one reserved for projects? Take all the time you need! It is your home, after all.
I totally agree. Or maybe a sum-up video when the project is finished with selected clips from older vlogs. Seeing a project finished is what is so satisfying
@@bassoonrckr Love these ideas! Thanks. Can't wait for you all to see the project we did today! You will love it!!! :)
You will love the video we recorded today then! Time-lapse galore. I can't wait. :)
I am so invested in this series. I never comment but I had to today just to show support for how hard you work to get these videos up girlie. Keep going! Love your channel.
Thank you so much that’s so sweet! I really appreciate it ❤️🥰
Hey just a few storage ideas from someone that lives in a very similar home with a loft and no storage with my husband, two year old son and dog!!
Kitchen ideas:
1. Store pots and pans in your oven. Just remember to remove them before preheating.
2. I have two narrow shelves that span across my kitchen walls at chest level that work great for spices, oils and dish soap etc. You can always decant them if you don’t want to look at ugly bright color bottles.
3. Also hang shelf’s in your kitchen that can be decorative but also functional. Also getting some hooks so you can hang coffee cups from the bottom of your shelf’s can be a bonus.
Bathroom idea:
1. When your considering a mirror for the bathroom I would suggest a medicine cabinet.
2. We also have a claw foot tub and I hide my clean supplies behind it. I just have a little caddy from the dollar store and keep it tucked behind.
General ideas:
1. Hooks and shelf’s are awesome to hang stuff but with limited space. Use those walls to your advantage. And if it’s random stuff just throw it in some cute baskets.
2. I highly suggest to have a little corner to hang some jackets and store some boots and just a general dumping spot. Your home will stay so much cleaner.
Take these ideas as jumping off points. You guys will figure out what works best for you. But these are some of the things that have kept me sane. Also You guys are doing a great job! I have enjoyed watching your progress!
Also not sure if it’s available for you guys but we use it use hughs net for our internet. Wasn’t the cheapest but also wasn’t an awful price. Not sure if it could download a video but we were able to stream movies with no problem in rural northern Nevada.
Good luck!
Thank you so much for all of the ideas! They are so helpful! I use a lot of these ideas in upcoming videos as we organize. Thanks for sharing. :)
I love the the vlog style of things as they happen - it feels authentic and real. I love that your videos are well pieced together but not highly edited, you guys are real people who are just trying your best and learning along the way as you live your lives and share your adventure with us!
Ultimately, do what makes you happy, and don't give yourself more work than necessary or spend too much energy trying to appease everyone - like you said, "if they do say something, they don't need to be in your house" 🌿
I love it! Thank you so much for the kind words. ❤️ So excited for what the future holds. I have some exciting videos I think you all will love coming!!
So proud of y'all! You are doing an AMAZING job. Starting out your life on a good note. You can always use tension rods inside the window frames to hang curtains until you are ready to make it permanent.
Thank you so much! Love that idea :)
You should really apply for a special on the hgtv channel cause I think people would love to watch your journey, its really motivating
Hahah thank you so much!! When we first started two people reached out to us but nothing came to fruition. I appreciate it! Hoping youtube will be beneficial in the future! :)
I enjoy your videos I think you should just do them the way you have been there very interesting. I think it’s fabulous that you’ll take on projects that you know nothing about and they don’t turn out that bad hooray! Keep up the good work.
Thank you so much for your kind feedback! I really appreciate it. :)
I'm LOVING these vlog style videos and you're giving me life with these right now, so thank you!
Also: I never knew I could find a DISH RACK cute, but man, that's a cute dish rack, fits in so well!
Oh my haha! Thank you so much. I thought so too. Walmart really came through for me. 😂
It’s nice to listen to you give updates on what you do/did but it would be also great to see you do the DIYs (even timelapses) and explain as you go
Love that idea! Especially when I’m working on smaller projects. Thanks for the feedback. :)
YOU GUYS ARE AMAZING!CABIN LOOKS GREAT.GOD BLESS
Thank you so much!!!
The vlog style is fine, just wish you would also show more of the projects actually getting done.
Thanks for the feedback! I will definitely work on this in upcoming videos. :)
Now I want my own berkey. Thanks for the vid, it’s really starting to come together!
They are great!! Thank you so much. :)
I'm watching through your series so not sure if you have already done this, but we also live in KY in a cabin! We are on grid, but even in my parents' cabin with newer windows, we ALWAYS put plastic on the windows from December-April ish. For about $60 a year, we buy the plastic that you shrink wrap with a hair dryer. It tightens to be fully clear and makes a HUGE difference in keeping the heat in!
I really enjoyed this video. Looking forward to future ones. Good luck.
Thanks for watching. :) I really appreciate it!
Love the Purdue sweatshirt! Boiler up!
Woohoo! That is right! :)
I gonna need daily posts
Haha maybe someday! Trying to do 3 a week right now. 😆 ONE DAYYY.
Cabin is looking good, great job. God Bless
Thank you so much! Really appreciate it. :)
Kentucky in the winter is cloudy and rainy.. I live in Ashland Kentucky. Takes some getting used to, I’m from Colorado.
Love the vlog ! Midnite solar make a LED " fuel gauge" style battery monitor that would suit you guys pretty well, I think.
Maybe something to research? I use one myself, and love it as it's so easy to see, just different colored LEDs, but still accurate. :)
Very cool! I will definitely be looking into that. Thanks for sharing. :)
Love it the way you're doing it now ❤🥳 keep it up Allie
Hi Love, daily vlogs are very nice:)
Perfect! Thanks so much! :)❤️
You should try to do vegan homesteading. It’s the best sustainable way to live and it’s honestly a journey. Ive been vegan for years and I’ll be getting my homestead soon back in my home country♥️
That is awesome! :)
I like this vlog style !!!!
Perfect! Thanks for the feedback! :)
Looks like you're making it happen! Good luck from our off-grid homestead to yours!
Thanks so much! We are working hard. :)
@@alliejcurtin It's worth it. We've been working on ours for just over a year now. Still have a ways to go but getting closer every day. Our videos are months behind at the moment. Trying to get caught up on them.
You should do you maybe mix it up ? Some « full project » and some « day in the life or working real time ». Anyway I’m so inspired by you it’s just so cool !! ✨
Thanks for the feedback! I agree! A little bit of everything :)
I love your bathtub!! Beautiful home:)
The inverter have a low dc cut off voltage any time the battery reach reach a certain voltage plus the battery have a bms to protect the battery it will short down the system
Exactly! I feel much more confident now knowing all the details of the system! Thanks for watching. :)
I just spent the whole day binge watching all of your cabin reno videos!! Sending love from Australia 💕
A morning routine would be great :)
I can do this! Thanks for the idea. :)
Awesome :) looking forward to it
Just subscribed very enjoyable video. If people are inspecting your work then they are visiting you for the wrong reason.
great, great job with everything, and love the videos. i built my cabin out in the woods also., i know its a big job,,, you guys have done it all so good, you should be proud of yourselves.
Thank you so much! I really appreciate it! A labor a love but I wouldn't change a thing! :)
Welcome to the wonderful world of solar. You have to really cut back on usage in winter lol
Yes haha. I feel so much more confident now that I know what is going on. 😂
I like your little vlog-style jumble of projects and day-in-the-life things. I also want to know about your composting system!! And does it get soooo muddy from your doggos? I live mostly off the grid and its so muddy all the time
Yes! I will definitely talk about it in the upcoming videos. :) And yes it gets terribly muddy haha. Working on that but also accepting the mess. 😅
Great video! Keep em comin :)
Thank you!! I sure will. :)
I want a full project vid
I will definitely include some of these. Thanks for the feedback!
Me and my husband have been thinking about living off gtid. We already live in Kentucky. What town did you all build your cabin. We wish you all well.
🌙 ❤️☘️💪
My father is a professional drywaller... every time I’m he’s in my house he comments on the drywall job... it was done way before I moved in... who cares.
Hahah You had no control! I am just not a detailed person. 🤷🏻♀️
@@alliejcurtin I have to admit I admire how self sufficient you guys are. You all do almost everything yourself. I can totally see you all building from the ground up with the next place.
