- History of the Bay Podcast Ep. 36: On November 1, 2004, the hip-hop world was shocked to learn that Bay Area legend Mac Dre was gunned down in Kansas City. Almost 20 years later, there is still no definitive answer as to what led to his death. Using thousands of documents obtained from the KC police department, journalist Donald Morrison conducted a thorough investigation of the facts for his 2021 article, "Who Killed Mac Dre?" On this podcast, Donald reviews his findings and discusses the details around Mac Dre's trip to Kansas City, the shooting, and the rumors that KC rapper Fat Tone was responsible. He also shares his experience witnessing the death of LA superstar Drakeo the Ruler and discusses the parallels between him, Mac Dre, and the long list of other rappers who fell victim to senseless violence.

I still have the news paper article from the day of… The coldest rapper to ever touch the mic!!!! Bustin sic ass lyrics since I was a kid!! Thizz in peace Mac Dre. One of a kind!!
Yeee!!
Dude on point with his info. My best friend was Fat Tone. So I know the real story nd dude on piont
Stockton Record - “BAY AREA RAPPER SLAIN”
S/O this dude and Jeff Weiss for holding down rap journalism for this generation. His article on “Who Killed Mac Dre” is one of the best pieces of investigative journalism period, not just rap.
I guess Jt tha Bigga figga was wrong. I read the Weiss article and that’s extremely compelling evidence on those two youngsters who got Dre. Those two kids are now both dead as well
Mac Dre started the greatest independent movement that rap had ever seen. He inspired hundreds of thousands of people with his fun and creative perspective on life, all fabricated in the clandestinity of his own mind. He in fact was 'too real for the f***ing radio'. It's a terrible tragedy that the movement never reached it's full potential.
“Too Hard” not too real.
I remember this day like it was yesterday, the local radio station out here in central California b95 announced the Mac Dre pass away in Kansas City, all the homies fell too are knee’s, B95 had Dre on there spin all night, we got drunk and high and bumped Dre all night, Rest in Paradise Mac Dre!
I remember that. I lived in Fresno where they think they’re the bay so it was big news
I found out from b95 also ……back when playing your radio was a normal daily thing ..
Yea I live in Hanford, we heard it through radio first, back when we had dialed up internet, I’ve seen him in concert 2 times in Fresno and one time in a after party Dre, Miami and Duna was at the spot, my Cuzin gave them some dank to blow on. That was the Golden era of Bay Area rap
I remember this day
@@catch-n-release5596fuccckkkinn siccck dawg those concerts music be gold memories!
Fat Tone was there at the National Guard Armory concert. This is a fact. There is a old 40 Kal DVD with footage of that night. It shows Dre performing on stage, Dubee and Yukmouth kicking it and even has Fat Tone backstage choppin it up with Mac Mall. There were no issues between anyone from KC or Cali that night. RIP Tone and Dre

You speaking tha truth

Dregs 1, this was an absolutely awesome piece of work. Salute brotha keep up the good work. Donald Morrison you worked your azz off, thank you for shedding light to this mystery....
Glad you enjoyed it much love 🙏🏽
First time viewer on the tubes. First impression.. Very well spoken on the intro! Just the whole set up.. Pulled me right in as a listener.
Appreciate you both. Magnificent job fellas 👏🏿 💯
Crazy to hear about all those other details. Never knew any of that.
Dam grabbing this book for sure!! Great interview 🎧✨🤎
Sounds like it's not actually this persons work talk about it being stolen from someone from...the bay. Hunters point.
Everytime im headed down 71 and pass the spot the van was parked i think of Mac Dre.
Really good interview one of the most intelligent host I’ve seen very easy to listen to good job
KC is the town all around the 🌎 tho! And Hell yeah we loved Mac Dre
Great interview
Vocals through the jail phone was done in 1986. The song is called "Sacred Love" on the album I against I by Bad Brains. Bad Brains are a NYC by way of Washington DC "African American" Hardcore Punk / Reggae band. The are widely considered one of the most important / influential bands of the genre. Lead singer H.R. (Human Rights) was locked up on a conviction for possession of herb. He ended up recording over the phone and the song is on the album. If you have never heard of Bad Brains its work taking a look at the documentary "A Band in D.C." It's on RUclips but also has foreign subtitles but worth the watch. Probably the best hardcore band. *Great interview very interesting. Thanks going to see what else is on your channel.
Thanks for the hard work... always wanted to know more about what happened to brother DRE
Good job Donald Morrison on your investigative reporting & however you got those documents that gave us pieces to the puzzle. Mac Dre was takin from us way too soon. He's our #1 Bay Area legend & forever in our hearts. We rok his music every day,so in that way he lives thru us>I believe. Rest In Paradise 💜🌉🌌🌠🎶🎶
Gotta get a hold of the mixtapes he was dropping, he gave Mac Dre a r.i.p shout out on that 50 cent magic sticc beat.
Good interview 🦾🌉
I really loved this interview, because so much of the youtube content about these things is so sensationalist, but the respect for Mac Dre, Fat Tone, and even the legal right of the suspects comes across clear as day. I might go and buy that book, and keep an eye out on this channel too.
Mac dre was cool, unique and innovative in his performance and music. great showmanship even all the way in long beach, CA we noticed what a special dude he was. real charismatic.
Thanks, for the insight of this horrible crime …..over money!
Health n Happiness is life’s truly about!💪👍🏼❤️
I remember watching it on the news of his passing 😔 RIP MAC DRE
Oregon has a lot of love for the Bay Area. All over.
I really like what you said at the begging about being sensitive about what you guys say cuz that's very respectful. Cudos to you homie you are a good guy honestly
Ayyy fw the video, wats the intro track that starts right at the beginning, shit is too funky 🔥🔥🔥
Really good interviewer and guest!
Very interesting but I’m surprised he had no info on the Thizzle deal deal that went sour in those couple of days and probably the real reason why The Furly Ghost was killed.
I felt like the bay area, missed a chance to crack the seal into main stream with Mac Dre
Read the article. Excited to hear it.
That’s dope!! Finally a story on what happened. #TipMacDre
I had the song with Fat Tone saying “I killed the Thizzlenman”on my iPod some years ago!
Crazy to see you doing the channnel Brody. It’s Josh

When they said RIP Mac Dre my heart dropped just like that day we lost the Mac Thizz In Peace Dre you left a huge hole in the Bay that may never be filled
Yes they still have the Bay Area section I got hall of game on cassette and and bunch of other crazy joints outta there
Shout out to Mac Dre we miss him true Bay Area Legend.
Mac Dre was basically playing with people's money. Some people didn't have a liking to that, And eventually retaliated
🤔🤐🤫💯
Yup some dudes from KC was talking about it on the podcast. It’s called inevitable podcast
@@doeboy400rvp4KC duds will take stuff to the grave
Good comment. People don't realize this and I am a big Dre fan. Dre was hella unprofessional and ultimately it cost him his life.
Dre wasn’t showing up to scheduled places… when he landed in KC he hit sum licks sold sum B.S pills that diggs plugged him with to get jammed up… they wanted there money back they where threatening him so he was dodging all these places he was scheduled for. He was supposed to have sneaking out of the city when he got shot.
Believe it or not!
I remember listening to his interview on KMEL
I REMEMBER RIDING PAST THE CRIME SCENE ON 71 SOUTH AROUND 6:30 IN THE MORNING THINKING SOMEBODY WAS DRUNK AND RAN OFF IN THE BUSHES!
Dam that’s crazy
Rip Mac Dre
Legends never die
And it's affirmative, Mac Dre was the first to record over the phone from jail. I believe he was even given a Guinness world record. He basically taught X-Raided how to do it through a kite.
Thank you! For this
Any info on the Steph Curry Mac Dre Documentary?
I need that book!!!!!
Middle school in 04-05 school year I moved from north Sacramento to South Sacramento the Green Haven area to apartment complex called Green Haven on the lake pretty much pocket area to be exact. I was in 7th grade and switched schools in middle of the year that year and instantly was the new guy on campus and the talk of the school at that moment by the attraction of all the ladies at school. I was not too big on Mac dre at that moment but going outside I instantly was the kid who stayed next door to Mac Dre the year he died. Knowing what I know now I'm glad I got to experience a big part of bay area rap as a kid. I remember that apartment was the first apartment I had my own room and the day when Mac Dre passed I was playing GTA San Andreas and listening to local radio on a school night when I heard he passed. I instantly became a fan my favorite rapper ever. Not a song I don't know about.❤😢 Mac Dre had a big impact in Sacramento. I remember the cars and weed smell but never got to actually meet him
Rip Mac Dre this is a gem of an episode
“They say Fat Tone didn’t kill Mac Dre and Puff snitches on Shyne.”
Cases need a certain amount of evidence to bring a conviction and/or close a case. It's not always about race or the fact he's a rapper. The Delphi murders took years for even just an arrest to be made and they already knew who the suspect was. It took that long to build the case enough to get him.
Anyway, this is excellent work. It's amazing to hear some of these details after all these years!
Mac Dre has been a huge influence on me since I started music. (I remade the Since '84 beat from scratch, all my own sample sound designs and guitar riff).
great interview props to this dude. one thing he got wrong was X Raided was the first rapper to record song/album from jail. Mac dre was in the same jail as X raided n asked him how he recorded music.
Thanks its the other way around tho Mac Dre “back in da hood” 1992 xraided “xorcist” 1995. Look it up
He should do jacka
Im sure my comment will be deleted :) But one of the main reasons I'm upset with the book I wrote about Dre being pawned off by this journalist, is that this "new book" is geared toward the murder of Dre and not his actual life. A crime that was never committed? BUT more importantly.... I conducted an interview with Dre's manager at the time who refutes EVERYTHING that was in Donny's article (a great article by the way)...SPECIFICALLY this false rumor of a hit on Dre...Dre was already booked FOR FUTURE GIGS with this promoter in KC. But carry on bruh
Holy what? Idgaf about hearing the Mac Dre story for the 100th time but as far as that Avila story I was riding for homeys version tuff
It’s a hard situation. If he’s being genuine, it’s good to get an outside perspective. Yo Dreggs, what do you think about this? I respect your opinion either way.
@dreweden3499 I think Donny wrote the article with good intentions. Unfortunately he missed the most valuable information because it came from someone in Dres camp and as he stated here, he neve spoke with anyone in the Bay for the article he wrote
Whole time people haven't gotten to the root because All the major players are dead or locked up
@SebasTheTruth I didn't say the reported shooters didn't do it. I said the rumors on WHY Dre died and the He was the intended target. Why would a promoter pay an artist for future work and then have them offed?
We gotta do the same for Johnny Cash and The Jacka. The Fat Tone song everyone keep askin about is called Quit Frontin where he says “36 shots at the mini van” he don’t say nothing about I shot the thizzle man. It’s pretty close tho
There was a song where he said I killed da thizz man.I had it on my iPod years ago
Thanks for all the hard work for Dre. Dres music today can go up against any of these rappers bars now days and smash on them! Thizz in peace "All Mighty Mac Andre Hicks!" 707ER Yeeee!
This was really the truth 🫡 💯
I remember hot 103 jams announcing Mac Dre died over the radio the next morning. I was getting ready for high school. Rip Andre macassi
Damn Mac Dre still hurts
I don't think Mac Dre is in any pain now, as he passed away.
It still hurts that’s he gone…… I still have posters of Dre under my bed put away and pictures of the big painted mural they did for him in San Francisco with tagging on the ground with RIP Mac Dre,Cougnut,Mr Cee.my Cuzin lives in Oakland, and when I came over one weekend he took me out there to go peep it, he and I were Mac Dre junkies….. the coldest line Dre dropped was “ love those who love you, but don’t let love fuck up your vision”
Sad that Mac Dre is gone 💔 I will forever slap Mac Dre. I had some good party days n nights listening to Mac Dre 2003-2007 😊
Fat Tone said in the song, "I killed the thizzle man cause I hate the thizzle dance." I heard it back in 2006. He used Dre's death for clout, & caught the repercussions.
Actually, it had to be 2005. We took a trip back to Missouri, & one of the homies played it for me when i was down there. This was BEFORE Tone was killed. I never heard it again. It's like it just disappeared. It had to be some local mixtape song. I'm from Missouri & was living in Vegas when Tone was killed. I remember seeing it on the NEWS.
That's cap where that song at now ?
That song dont exist quit lying goofy. Fat Tones manager still has a cash reward of $10,000 if you can show a copy of it to this day almost 20 years later. Nobody has ever collected that basically free money or posted it online anywhere. I have every Fat Tone cd and even got unreleased Fat Tone material and Ive never heard it. Funny 20 years later thousands of people still comment they heard a song that was never made proceeding to spread that lie. The only ones clout chasing was Mac Minister and his partner because they were dusty and broke.
Some KC dude’s was talking about this very song on their podcast it’s called inevitable podcast
@@jn5tty265Mandela Effect
71 in KC has a weird vibe because it originally destroyed black neighborhoods but as it sits today it’s hard to ignore Mac Dre getting killed on it.
I did the last song (SPORT COAT) he featured on in kc. The day he passed. T.I.P. The MAC.
Type in Fat Tone Documentary it’s like a hr long , bro even got pictures of everybody bro is mentioning
II read this article a while back, holy shit man Dre setup by his own people. Cold.
I was n the pen when this happened I'm from Oakland and it was cats in there from the crest and we was all hurt. I was 8 months from gettin out and during my 5 years I was thinking I was gone get out and for sho to a Mac Dre event . I sho wish this didn't happen but do understand it's part of a bigger problem. R.i.p. Mac Dre @ R.i.p Daytona. I'm bout to bump not my job.
You need to do a history of the San Jose graffiti bsr lords
I don't think Fat Tone...RIP...had anything to do with Mac's tragic passing...Several days before Mac was assassinated...he was accused of backing-out and not fulfilling an engagement which angered that promotion group which cost them hundreds of thousands of dollars...There could have been other reasons involved but that was the primary reason...The national guard armory still exists...Thanksgiving blues dinner and dance party is hosted there every year...Kansas City holiday tradition...
There's a lot of facts this claimed 'investigative reporter' doesn't know probably too high off bupe and done and switching up now on his rise to 'fame'. He just doesn't know yet who he is.
Still slappin MAC DRE in 2024……. “Global” one of my favorite songs
FACTS IVE HEARD THAT SONG.
Dregs, you continually talk about supporting the Bay and I commend you on the work you’ve done to highlight artists who haven’t always been given a platform. But as someone who has always preached that the Bay should support our own, how can you not ask him about the fact that it’s documented that he put his name on this book and stole the work from an author from Hunters Point? This guy wrote a great article, but the book is not his work. And yes, there are receipts that I know you’re aware of.
Not suprising to me. An amateur pretending to be an expert is a phony.
Bro whatever you saying don’t make sense: if it’s an author from hunters point why didn’t u name drop them in your comment? At least SOMEBODY is bringing light to a GIANT topic in the Bay Area….
This one’s crazy .!
What Jacka song is he referring to ?
Savino was probably in on it
Tragic how Mac Priest must feel. Dropped two bodies to avenge Cutty, only to eventually find out Fat Tone had no part or responsibility for Dre’s murder. Facing two life sentences for a misunderstanding.
Certified crash dummy
He might be innocent. He could have just plead guilty and tried to get a reduced sentence that way but he's always maintained his innocence. Maybe he knows who did it but it probably wasn't himself.

That Fat Tone diss to Dre was on a song with C-Lim
Wer noone heard it
The Mac Dre Stan’s will never believe Yu tho.
Fat tone had a collaborative album called Sky’s the limit with Various “51st Street Crips”where the openly brag about the Killing of Mac Dre on like 8 songs. The album was Released
December of 2004 & gave gruesome details on the hit of Mac Dre.
They brag about the van being shot up over 36 times…
They even Taunt make Wanda for coming to KC and being on the news in KC for her sons death.
A lot references to flipping his car off the road on a few songs.
After the Cd made it’s way to the crest some one put a bag on fat tones head for the stuff he was sayin in them songs.
Allegedly J diggs met with fat tone and gave him a pass.
Tone was still runnnn in g around scared cause he really knew what happened.
So Fat tone runs to a hidden studio and makes and album called
“On mine My hood betrayed me”
A total 2 face shit show cd acting like he didn’t say none of those things about Mac Dre on the last album.
Soon as the album starts he is begging for forgiveness sayin he was friends with Mac Dre and all the Rumors are bs.
But by track three on this same album he has another Mac Dre murder reference on this album too. Song is called breath he reacts the shooting from front back on the song.
Safe 2 say Fat Tone killed mac Dre.
A lot people don’t want to accept it but who Raps about some ont they didn’t kill I deep detail like that.
I know who…..No 1 but the real killers part of it.
Police was not giving no real details on this case in the first 6. Months and fat tone rapped about the details like he was their.
@@reddogg7787You are an idiot.
Maybe think about the chances that someone would commit murder, and then announce it to the world, risking the life sentence and oh yeah this series of songs that are supposed to be real .. yeah even in today's modern age of sharing and clout chasing nobody has spread these around there's just rumors of it without actually existing on any streaming platform or RUclips channel or anything it's just you know and it's trust me bro is your verification?
Do you also believe in flat Earth and the fake moon landing and probably really believe deeply and all kinds of shit you found on the internet maybe you should go outside more often and get a sense of how the real world works.
