Ju Wenjun's 23-move win with the Trompowsky Attack

  • Featured is a game review between the current (May - 2023) Women's World Chess Champion, Ju Wenjun, and Ruotong Chu from the 2016 Chinese Chess League. Ju opts for the Trompowsky Attack, and by move 7, it feels very much like a Pillsbury and Stonewall Attack structurally speaking. Ju's simple plan is to establish a well-supported knight on e5. This plan goes unchallenged by Ruotong, leading to a situation where white eventually gains the upper hand with a clearly superior light-squared bishop. This piece imbalance plays a significant role in creating weaknesses on black's kingside.

Thank you so much for this one Jerry. I always get wrecked by the stonewall attack... I know the knight is going to e5 but my otb defense rarely works. Looking forward to trying out your suggested defense

Sure 😎. Deploy the queen knight to c6. It’s an improvement. 👍

I find your analysis very useful. Thank you! If I remember correctly, you used to provide the PGN in the description. If it's not too much of a hassle, it would be great if you could do that again. I like to look at the games myself with your commentary in mind. I can look them up, but, in this instance, I haven't been able to find this game in the free database I use.

Little language note for you. In Chinese, the single-syllable name is the family name and the two-syllable name is the personal name. So in this game you have Ju listed last name first, which is how the Chinese do it, but Chu's name is listed in the western way, like we in the west would do it. Chinese people themselves sometimes do this when dealing with the west, because of western expectations on how names are done, but it isn't correct.
    Subscribed BTW.

Thank you. When vocalizing a Chinese name, would it be Ju Wenjun or Wenjun Ju? I’d like to address the name in the way that is custom to the country.

I really enjoyed your coverage of the World chess championship , but didn’t notice any questions to Ding in the post match press conferences in Chinese.
one would have thought his victory would be very big news in China, but seems to have received minimal interest or coverage.Any idea why?

  • @pianissimo7121

    I thought the idea after 7...Qb6 8.Rb1 h6 is to play 9. Bxf3,
I am guessing black responds with gxf3?try to fight for e5. I don't know how to evaluate that position.
