My grandmother made me one of these when I was festival hopping. It’s one of my favorite things still to this day and I’ll remember her always by it. 💛
There are way better stitches to use for this! Overall I recommend tunisian crochet, and you can get a decent width strap going with even regular short hooks so no need to buy anything. I also recommend linked crochet stitches, and extremely the thermal stitch. Also, measuring it with the bottle in is a good idea, but make sure you ALWAYS measure your crochet at both it's relaxed and stretched states to avoid these mishaps. That is especially good advice for when you're making clothing.

I made one of them for my water bottle. I just recently learned how to make a crochet cat coaster with the ears and tail so i did the same thing on my crochet water bottle holder
If you use a chenille style yarn (I use Bernat Blanket Yarn), and don't leave holes in the pattern (no mesh), it'll keep the drink cool for quite a while. I've had ice last most of the workday as long as I kept drinking the melted water; our temps regularly get into the hundreds.
Ok now put water in it and feel the pressure on your neck while walking around and the pain on your stomach that's caused by the water bottle hitting it.
