Die Hard is not a Christmas movie Die Hard is The Christmas movie. Alan Rickman’s performance is even more remarkable when you consider the fact that this was his first major movie role. RIP Alan Rickman
Part of the charm of "Die Hard" that can't be overstated is the conflict between New York and California culture. The movie is peppered with references and Bruce Willis portrays NY gritty exceptionally well. Americans really notice it a lot but if you're not from the US you might miss a bit of it.
After John shot Hans he said, "Happy trails, Hans." The Roy Rogers TV show always ended with Roy singing, "Happy trails to you, until we meet again. Happy trails to you, keep smiling until then."
John McClane is probably the most relatable action hero ever. He’s not an invincible one man army, he’s not a highly trained killing machine, he’s not an unstoppable mountain of muscle. He’s not a super soldier like most action heroes are portrayed, but rather a simple police officer that’s out of his element. He doesn’t look really intimidating, he looks like he could be your friend’s dad. He’s just a guy who was in the wrong place at the wrong time. He makes mistakes, he shows fear, he gets injured. But with sheer determination and willpower he overcomes adversity and insurmountable odds to save the day in the end. You’ll see characters like Rambo kill like 100 guys or more in a movie, but here McClane struggles against a dozen armed and intelligent men. It’s not a showing of McClane’s weakness or inexperience, but rather how competent Hans and his crew really are. As far as action movies go, this one is a refreshing change in an oversaturated genre. Definitely one of my favorite movies ever.

For me my favourite Alan Rickman's film is Truly, Madly, Deeply. It's such a great ghost film about loss and not horror that it is massively overlooked and seemingly forgotten about. He was such a great actor, with so many amazing performances, in so many great films (you cant go wrong with most of them to be honest) and I always die a little inside when you see people recognise him and go Snape. I get it, he was great in the role but his career was so much more than those films and deserves to be checked out if you can.

My difficulty is when folks only say; "It takes place on xmas but isn’t an xmas movie." And that’s it, while everyone else is quoting harvard published scientifically reviewed quantum computing statistical analysis that proves it is an xmas movie….. but they don’t care. Now I’ve got a statistical defense. Ho. Ho. Ho.
Also,…. Inclusion matters. If you were a tall blonde German (mean guy)-ist with small feet in the late 1980’s, you probably felt more accepted and recognized because of this film. It may be Die Hard, but it had some nice DEI Hard too.
The actor who plays Hans' Gruber's tech guy is the late Clarance Gilyard Jr. He passed away fairly recently. After this role, he famously played Texas Ranger James Trivette on the 90s series "Walker, Texas Ranger." He starred alongside Chuck Norris, who plays the show's main protagonist and Trivette's friend Ranger Cordell Walker. The show ran for 8 seasons from 1993-2001. A great series, if you want to react to a T.V Show. Hope you and your family have a Merry Christmas Natasha.
8:20 "You could have just told me what floor it is. What kind of a frig answer is that?" Weeelllll.... John used the computer, the computer said she's on the 30th floor. Then the guy at the desk said "Thirtieth floor? The party. They're the only ones left. Take the express elevator. Get off where you hear the noise." So both the computer and the guy told John the floor number. Then the guy told him the best elevator to take. Useful answer. He wrapped up with a joke because both of them knew John would press the "30" button BEFORE the elevator even moves, and that's where he would get off.
I was 8 years old when Die Hard came about. It's been my favorite Christmas movie ever since. Recently, Violent Night has joined it with a close second place. The "fists with your toes" is an actually recommended method of dealing with anxiety/stress. Also, yeah. Alan Rickman knocked it out of the park as Hans Gruber. Probably the most "love to hate" movie villain of all time. If you haven't seen Galaxy Quest, he's really good in that one, too. As much of a jerk as Ellis is, I think many people miss the fact that he doesn't tie John to Holly. That's why he told Hans that he and John are old friends. There's a long-standing fan theory that all of Reginald VelJohnson's (Al) rolls are actually the same character, who has moved around and changed names in order to escape the weird situations he's been in. This includes the cop from Ghostbusters, the cab driver from Crocodile Dundee, and the dad from Family Matters, and so many more.
So you've fitted Rodney Firtree with bells? Rodney likes this, cos now not only can he jingle all over Christmas, but he can join in with the Morris dancing, too! Nat, you are such a darling brain-box.
Hi Natascha. The touch screen told John that Holly was on the 30th floor. Security guy was letting him know when he gets off the 30th to just follow the noise. An amazing action film with an intelligent villain and a very resourceful hero. Their brief face to face meeting memorable, like watching the two across a chess board. Merry Christmas, Natascha.
Yeah but there's only one group of people in the building, eveyone is on the 30th, he could have sent him there right away. I'll put this on the company wants to show off its fancy touch screen.
Or watched him when he was a kid. Remember this film is 36 years old now. If John McClane was born in 1950, he'd have been seven when the Roy Rogers show finished, and 38 in 1988. If he was born in 1945, he'd have been 12 when it ended and 43 in 1988. That age range doesn't seem too far out there.
Two films with Alan Rickman you might be interested in are GalaxyQuest (a cultural favorite now) and Quigley Down Under. A Christmas movie I want to suggest to you is Jingle All the Way. It stars Ah-nold and gives insight about how crazy Christmas is for people! You kept singing, "jingle all the way, jingle all the way..." So you brought that movie to mind for me. Enjoy your Christmas and Happy New Year!
Ive always been in the movie set at Christmas camp. Saw this when it first came out. Had no idea who Alan Rickman was but by the end of the movie I was a big fan. Have been to this day. RIP Alan Rickman
The story I've heard is that the director tricked Rickman when they dropped him. He promised Rickman he'd count first, but then just dropped him without warning, which is why the shocked look on Gruber's face was so authentic.
9:03 You're right that the guy at reception could have been clearer. However, he told John to take the Express Elevator, and that means it won't even have buttons for many of the floors. My suspicion is that John's headed to the first (lowest) floor possible.
Die Hard is a total classic. One of the great things about it is while John McClane is a badass, he's not "gun down dozens of armed men" badass. It's more of a battle of wits between him and Hans Gruber than anything. The gunfights are against shorter odds, just one or two men at once, and he is trying to _escape_ rather than just kill the terrorists. And Bruce Willis's acting is great, even as a New York cop he's not taking all this in stride, he's devastated when Gruber kills Mr. Takagi, kills his first terrorist by accident and even later he demands that the one he gets the drop on in the boardroom surrender rather than just shooting him. The sequels get away from this a bit, moving more into more typical "one-man-army" action scenes, but at least McClane keeps his brains; I certainly wouldn't call them _mindless_ action films. And Ellis... he's definitely a douche, but he didn't tell Gruber who John _really_ was, even when he was staring down the barrel. And it is definitely a Christmas movie, it's all about a dad struggling to reunite with his estranged family, that is one of _the_ classic Christmas movie plots. It's not _just_ about it being set at Christmas, though that is hardly just a minor background element either; it's an office Christmas party, the soundtrack is full of Christmas music, and "Now I have a machinegun, Ho Ho Ho!" If you want to see more of Alan Rickman, try _Quigley Down Under_ (1990), and _Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves_ (1991), and for more Bruce Willis, _The Fifth Element_ (1997).
I honestly think this is among the best heist movies ever made. You have a generally smart villain and protagonist, well "smart" for an action movie anyway. It also happens to have some the most iconic one-liners. As far as I am concerned, it is a christams movie. Yes, the holiday themes are subplot, but they still play an important role in the overall story.
Hi Natascha, I loved your reaction to this action classic, it's awesome! As good as Bruce Willis is in it, the great Alan Rickman steals the show as a deliciously witty bad guy! :) just as he does in Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves (1991) as the Sheriff of Nottingham. Please react to that next, that's my favourite Alan Rickman movie. The movie I watch every Christmas is Santa Claus The Movie (1985) it's the best festive film. Merry Christmas, lovely beautiful lady :) have a fab one, lots of love x
John McClane was one of the first action heroes who was a regular guy just using his wits and pure luck to get by on the skin of his teeth, which was refreshing in a sea of juiced, jacked up super soldier heroes. Hard to believe the same guy who wrote the screenplay for this movie also wrote the so-bad-it's-good "Street Fighter: The Movie"
A great reaction to this great film I enjoyed seeing it, Natascha. Alan Rickman films that I recommend are: "Galaxy Quest" 1999 Sci-Fi Comedy, "Truly, Madly, Deeply" 1990 Romance, "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" 1991 Adventure, "Perfume: The Story of a Murder" 2006 Thriller, "The Search for John Gissing" 2001 Comedy, "Sense and Sensibility" 1995 Costume Drama. There are many others but these are the best in my opinion. I hope that you and your loved ones have a wonderful Christmas and New Year, all the very best for 2025, Natascha. Adam x.

47:48-47:50 I think when Hans gave the first name Bill that goes with the last name Clay, and the shot of the staff directory board says "CLAY, W.M.," it's because Bill can be a nickname for a full first name such as William, just like it is acceptable to call William Shakespeare as Bill Shakespeare.
The black computer hacker is a well known character actor. Was in Topgun as temporary replacement for Goose after he dies for Maverick. Played in Walker Texas Ranger with Chuck Norris fir years and was on original Left Behind movies. Just recently passed earlier this year I think.
If anyone hasnt brought this up but this was Alan Rickman's first featured film and I'd learned not too long ago Alan Rickman did his own stunts that included the falling off of the building which he had said was 40 feet.
10000% a Christmas movie. And Alan Rickman is fantastic. Hans Gruber is everyones favourite character in the film 😂 Legend performance in a legend film. Merry Xmas Natascha, have a good one 🥳🎉🙂
No, No NO ! Christmas movies aren't released in the middle of July, for heaven's sake. Christmas movies -- like Elf, A Christmas Carol, The Santa Clause, Miracle on 34th Street, etc -- are released during the holidays. Die Hard was the summer action-adventure blockbuster of 1988, and if you had asked anyone that SUMMER -- when it was raking in big bucks at the SUMMER box office -- if this should be considered a Christmas movie just because the incidental backdrop of the plot was a corporate Christmas party, they'd have looked at you like you were from Mars.
Great pick, one of my favorite Christmas movie, love watching Christmas Movie with you Natascha my elf. 💚🧝🏻♀️ Merry Christmas and bless you hun. ❤️🎄🎅🏻
It is so funny to me that while you are fawning over Allen Rickman's accent; I am fawning over yours lol. You are completely justified with your annoyance at the security guard that didn't just give him the floor number, especially after telling him they were the only ones left in the building. Why did he even need to look up her name on the screen if they were the only ones left in the building? Allen Rickman is in a movie called "The January Man" (somewhat of a tie in with the Christmas season). He is not the main character, but it's a good movie; I think you would enjoy it. Starring Kevin Kline that you may know from "A Fish Called Wanda" (another movie you should watch if you don't know it, also starring John Cleese).
even though auto correct made you type rash, i kinda don't want you to change it 🤣🤣 just to be clear to any outside viewers tho, no rashes round here 🤣🤣 Thank you so much for watching my lovely!
This is one of the few movies that can show how difficult it can be to be a good cop. Powell simply made a mistake, but it was a mistake that turned into a tragedy for all those involved including him. Don't get me wrong there are a lot of bad cops out there, but there are good cops too.
The elevator issue: the guard said to take the express. It only goes to one floor, nowhere else. The bit about getting off at the noise was just a joke.
39:40 "is that going to affect the structural integrity of the building?" Not a chance. In 1993, real terrorists detonated a 1,300 pound bomb at the World Trade Center. That real blast in that building shattered glass wondows more than a block away and fractured several layers of concrete in the parking garage. But it didn't damage the structural integrity of the building very much at all; just one support column was slightly damaged, the nearly 300 other columns were fine. The beam was repaired and the concrete replaced and the building was open in under two weeks. John dropped down 1 pound of explosive. It detonated several missiles that had not been fired at the police yet, but that is still less than 10 pounds of total explosive, not even 1 percent of the World Trade Center blast. Further, all that blast went out the windows - explosions are just expanding gas and when gas expands, it looks for the easiest way out. Windows are easier than walls and walls are easier than support beams. And if you look, none of the walls were damaged - just the windows.
OK, one thing: I guess it must be a post-9/11 generation issue. Because I saw this movie on arrival in ’88 and at the time I can’t recall anyone believing what everyone seems to be fearing now: that one stick of C4 down an elevator shaft could take down an entire skyscraper - let alone a Los Angeles skyscraper, built to withstand earthquakes. As in the actual ground moving underneath it. Another thing: yes, that sign read ”Clay, Wm.” As in William Clay, as in Bill Clay. Hans was right on the money, as always. I’m Swedish, I shouldn’t have to tell this to a Brit.
Nothing is more satisfying than watching Harry Potter with my obsessive family and shouting out" Oh look it's Hans Gruber!"

Happy trails Hans. 😊 Merry Christmas 🎄🎁 🥰
Hope you and your family have a Merry Christmas Natasha.
oh man too young
Great reaction. Thanks. Sounds like you have an awesome singing voice.
8:20 "You could have just told me what floor it is. What kind of a frig answer is that?"
Weeelllll....
John used the computer, the computer said she's on the 30th floor.
Then the guy at the desk said "Thirtieth floor? The party. They're the only ones left. Take the express elevator. Get off where you hear the noise."
So both the computer and the guy told John the floor number.
Then the guy told him the best elevator to take. Useful answer.
He wrapped up with a joke because both of them knew John would press the "30" button BEFORE the elevator even moves, and that's where he would get off.
An express elevator goes right to a select floor with no stops. Presumably the executive offices where the party is being held.
Hi Natascha, Your reaction to die hard was fantastic I loved it❤
Only a few days but merry Christmas 🎄🎅🏼🍪🥛🎁🧸❄
It is Christmas Eve tradition to leave a lighter and a pair of shoes in an air duct for John McClane.
Fantastic reaction, thank you so much Natascha!
Merry Christmas, Natascha.
aaaahhhhh ahahha yeah i missed that like a proper idiot 🤣 thank you for filling in that blank ahah Merry Christmas!
@ a very fun reaction to Die Hard, Natascha. You have earned a place in Santa’s ‘naughty’ AND nice lists!👍🏻
You need to eat more 🍔🌮🍧. Put on about 20 lbs then you will feel healthier 👍
Yeah but there's only one group of people in the building, eveyone is on the 30th, he could have sent him there right away. I'll put this on the company wants to show off its fancy touch screen.
First time seeing one of your reactions. You are fun and have a fabulous voice. Merry Christmas
Roy Rogers was a classic Hollywood cowboy, we can assume McLain caught him on reruns.
So good Natascha, love how excited you get, the chief was also Mr. Vernon in the Breakfast Club another great 80's movie.
awh i'm so glad you enjoyed watching along with me and that my excitement doesn't annoy you ahaha 💖
@@nataschasummers Heck no it's infectious, you're so cool.😎
Two films with Alan Rickman you might be interested in are GalaxyQuest (a cultural favorite now) and Quigley Down Under.
A Christmas movie I want to suggest to you is Jingle All the Way. It stars Ah-nold and gives insight about how crazy Christmas is for people!
You kept singing, "jingle all the way, jingle all the way..."
So you brought that movie to mind for me.
Enjoy your Christmas and Happy New Year!
I went to see this when it first came out and it's the only movie I went to where people actually stood up and applauded at the end
Ive always been in the movie set at Christmas camp. Saw this when it first came out. Had no idea who Alan Rickman was but by the end of the movie I was a big fan. Have been to this day. RIP Alan Rickman
It's for SURE a xmas movie! I loved Alan in this, a true talent and well missed 💖
Well at least you can admit that you're wrong.
The story I've heard is that the director tricked Rickman when they dropped him. He promised Rickman he'd count first, but then just dropped him without warning, which is why the shocked look on Gruber's face was so authentic.
Great 👍🏽 way to get in the Christmas spirit 🎄🎁
It's a belly button Christmas!!!
I 100 percent agree that people born the 21st of February are the greatest.
Definitly one of the best christmas movie ever made, HO - HO - HO.
you get an extra like just from your dancing tree at the end!
9:03 You're right that the guy at reception could have been clearer. However, he told John to take the Express Elevator, and that means it won't even have buttons for many of the floors. My suspicion is that John's headed to the first (lowest) floor possible.
"You're all getting... jelly of the month"😀
It's not _just_ about it being set at Christmas, though that is hardly just a minor background element either; it's an office Christmas party, the soundtrack is full of Christmas music, and "Now I have a machinegun, Ho Ho Ho!"
If you want to see more of Alan Rickman, try _Quigley Down Under_ (1990), and _Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves_ (1991), and for more Bruce Willis, _The Fifth Element_ (1997).
"He also jingles" 10/10 Rodney 😁 This is the BEST Christmas movie. Also the first movie I saw in cinemas when I was a little lad of six 🤣
My first time I watched this movie was 1988 and ever since it has been my favourite christmas movie till this day, love it 10/10
Hi Natascha, I loved your reaction to this action classic, it's awesome!
If you reacted to Edge of Tomorrow my brain would do a double take.
It's only a matter of time
@@JesseDrift well done lad
@@luketimewalker lmao
John McClane was one of the first action heroes who was a regular guy just using his wits and pure luck to get by on the skin of his teeth, which was refreshing in a sea of juiced, jacked up super soldier heroes. Hard to believe the same guy who wrote the screenplay for this movie also wrote the so-bad-it's-good "Street Fighter: The Movie"
Awesome coolest funniest amazing and lovely reaction every time 😇 🎉✨️❤and marry Christmas 🎄 🎊🎄
There's a few movies that I wish I could go back in time and watch again for the first time. Die Hard is definitely one of them!
Lucy the daughter is a very early role for Mary Elizabeth Winstead and in thanks to production she comes back and plays her in future Die Hard movies.
27:56 My actual reaction to the jump scene when I was 12. 10 years later, this part always made me flinch.
It's a Absolute Shame We will not see a y more Movies from both of these Amazing Actors 😢 As always the like button 🔳 has been Illuminated 🎅 🎄 👍 🎉☀ 😎
Die Hard 2 & 3 are also considered amazing.
Wm is William! The short name for William is Bill! 😁😁😊😊👩👩👗👗👠👠👍👍❤❤
A great reaction to this great film I enjoyed seeing it, Natascha. Alan Rickman films that I recommend are:
"Galaxy Quest" 1999 Sci-Fi Comedy,
"Truly, Madly, Deeply" 1990 Romance,
"Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" 1991 Adventure,
"Perfume: The Story of a Murder" 2006 Thriller,
"The Search for John Gissing" 2001 Comedy,
"Sense and Sensibility" 1995 Costume Drama.
There are many others but these are the best in my opinion.
I hope that you and your loved ones have a wonderful Christmas and New Year, all the very best for 2025, Natascha.
Adam x.
"By Grabthar's Hammer, by the Suns Of War van, you shall be avenged!" Alan Rickman with Tony Shalhoub and Sam Rockwell is the dream team none of us knew we needed.
@FunnyQuailMan I totally agree, Galaxy Quest is such a great film.
Galaxy Quest is a must watch
I am from Leeds, your dialect sounds very close 😂 I can't pinpoint whether its between Wakefield or Sheffield, or possibly closer to Lancashire 😂
Anyway! Die Hard, great movie. Deffo Christmas Movie 👌
My childhood home was 78 Crossflats Avenue Leeds 11..many many years ago before we all emigrated to Canada. My Dad,brother and sister were born in Leeds,my Mum in Sheffield and I was born in Skipton. And yes..Die Hard is a fantastic Christmas movie!
47:48-47:50
I think when Hans gave the first name Bill that goes with the last name Clay, and the shot of the staff directory board says "CLAY, W.M.," it's because Bill can be a nickname for a full first name such as William, just like it is acceptable to call William Shakespeare as Bill Shakespeare.
If your buttons pop I think I may well Die Hard!
🤣🤣🤣 noooooo, in the full length reaction i'm checking myself every now and then for this exact thing/lifting my arms up too much 🤣
@@nataschasummers LOL that you ❤ this 😂😂😂😂😆😆
I usually roll my eyes at this kind of comment. Gotta admit though, that's a good one 😂
Was thinking the same 😅
@@luketimewalkerhearts where they are deserved 😂😂😂😂😂😂
It IS a Christmas movie - it has Christmas music and Christmas quotes.
Happy Christmas rash great ep great reaction
even though auto correct made you type rash, i kinda don't want you to change it 🤣🤣 just to be clear to any outside viewers tho, no rashes round here 🤣🤣 Thank you so much for watching my lovely!
@nataschasummers 😂😂😂😂 I just relised now 😂😂😂
SPOILER ALERT ....
There's a little saying among fans: It's not Christmas until Hans Gruber falls from Nakatomi plaza.
This is one of the few movies that can show how difficult it can be to be a good cop. Powell simply made a mistake, but it was a mistake that turned into a tragedy for all those involved including him. Don't get me wrong there are a lot of bad cops out there, but there are good cops too.
ENJOYED your reaction, thank you! 👍☺
"In Rod We Trust"... lol nice
Secret service: "… I’ll allow it.’
Another great choice for Christmas. Give Rodney my best!
The elevator issue: the guard said to take the express. It only goes to one floor, nowhere else. The bit about getting off at the noise was just a joke.
39:40 "is that going to affect the structural integrity of the building?"
Not a chance.
You look fabulous..
Happy Holidays and have a great New Year..
