tho i can't help but feel like the lyrics aren't so happy, like dinner is supposed to be life, and dessert is death, you can only have dessert once the dinner is gone you know

I wonder how some people don't get the message of this song. Like, it's very simple and yet very nice. The dessert comes after dinner, and if dinner is life in this sing, the dessert is the death that you can't have yet, not until you eat your dinner (which is living your life). The song IS happy, it tells you to live life before picking up that dessert.

I think the most magical thing about this song is that it's so absurdly comical with its use of metaphor and overall tone that it somehow manages to make life seem fun and worthwhile while also taking the sting out of death. That's like a layer cake of comfort.

Personally I think this song's message is honestly a bit "happier" than other people. I see the message more as "you should live your life to the fullest while you can so you can accept death when it comes." After a long life of ups and downs, death is your rest, its the sweet dessert at the end.

Yeah I was in the hospital for attempted suicide and I was screaming and shit and they just put me in a isolated room and gave me a shot to make me sleep. 😶 (Edit: I also remember they tied me to the bed with restraints. Not really sure why tho

See I interpreted it as someone bring you down to earth, grounding you. Like if you're in a self-destructive spiral or your spiraling down you need someone to bring you down you need someone to bring you back to Earth. That's how I see it, as desperately wanting to ground you and support you while also wanting to die at the same time. You want to be saved but you don't. During rash moments you just need someone to bring you down to ground you
For those who don't get the meaning, *dinner* refers to your life, while *dessert* refers to your *death* .

I really like this song, the line of "I tasted dying and it tasted good, but that's dessert, you can have it when the dinner's gone" feels kind of sweet to me, the "god I wanna die but that's for later, I've got to do this first." Like dying is dessert, living is dinner. A kind of "I guess I'll stay alive."
there's something about the way he says "but that's dessert" that's like... firm but also gentle, like it's understanding but is still making a point to say "no, we're not doing that" and the "dinner is not over" also feels similarly firm, like a "you're not getting away that easy" the "so put it down" feels like it's talking directly to the listener to me, saying "yeah, I get it, it would be so peaceful and freeing, but you're not done yet, put it down."
I really love how Jack chooses his metaphors, anyone could write a 'suicide is not the answer' song, but he decided he'd write it with the theme of a parent telling their child they need to finish their dinner before they eat their dessert

“Hold me down until I’m fine” really hits hard when you get sent to the psych ward. It feels like everyone’s holding you down, and they will only stop once your okay. A bitter sweet thing I guess, but it really resonates with me
This is genuinely an anti-suicide thing that helps most of the time I feel like "Oh I've heard that so many times I know it's bad" but this just gives me a whole new perspective, I can't have dessert if I haven't finished dinner so I can't die without living out my life I'd miss out on so much just like how you would miss out on a nice dinner if you had dessert without finishing dinner

This actually shows a lot with how I deal with my depression, my mom treats me like a bestfriend/sister until she decides to be a mom, and I normally have to be the adult in our relationship, it can be EXTREMELY loose and she barely has rules but at the same time it's also kinda rule abiding and strict emotionally, when she's in a good mood I need to be in a good mood, if she's in w bad one I need to comfort her, I've found out this honestly isn't normal, and I've found out all of the issues with the relationship, I'm trying hard to fix it, but it feels like it can't be, and do to her emotionally controlling of me I don't always tend to look at all of my options all at once, it kinda feels like my friends talking with me about it, and how to explore my options while I'm trying to fix everything around me emotionally and get better, with my family, and it feels like I'm going insane

I think this song is about someone wanting to kill themselves but another tells them not to go through with it. When it says "I've tasted dying" that may be referring to some sort of self-harm. The song is told from two perspectives.
I believe it’s saying how dinner and all the other tastes represent life and everything in it, while dessert represents a sweet release from it, death, and how one deserves it only when they’ve accomplished everything life has to offer.

It's also an interesting analogy to deter suicide in place of the standard "don't do that! death bad" Like, your time will come naturally, but you've got to live awhile first.

Seems like either jack (or the character) imparting wisdom on us (or another, more suicidal character) on how suicide is skipping the main course of dinner without properly living it. The “I’ve tasted dying” I’d think refers to either a failed suicide attempt or just some abstract concept of being unconscious or unable to live- basically saying the nothingness of dying is sweet but first you have to savour the gifts of life
