I wonder how some people don't get the message of this song. Like, it's very simple and yet very nice. The dessert comes after dinner, and if dinner is life in this sing, the dessert is the death that you can't have yet, not until you eat your dinner (which is living your life). The song IS happy, it tells you to live life before picking up that dessert.
I think the most magical thing about this song is that it's so absurdly comical with its use of metaphor and overall tone that it somehow manages to make life seem fun and worthwhile while also taking the sting out of death. That's like a layer cake of comfort.
Personally I think this song's message is honestly a bit "happier" than other people. I see the message more as "you should live your life to the fullest while you can so you can accept death when it comes." After a long life of ups and downs, death is your rest, its the sweet dessert at the end.
yea, everyones like, this is so dark, just cause they said death tasted good, but then they went on to say that you have to live life , or "Eat your dinner" first
For those who don't get the meaning, *dinner* refers to your life, while *dessert* refers to your *death* . He's saying that you gotta eat dinner first before dessert! Which means you gotta live your life first then die after. *Moral of the song* : Live your life to the fullest and learn to accept your fate in the end :) _Hope I helped you out!_
I really like this song, the line of "I tasted dying and it tasted good, but that's dessert, you can have it when the dinner's gone" feels kind of sweet to me, the "god I wanna die but that's for later, I've got to do this first." Like dying is dessert, living is dinner. A kind of "I guess I'll stay alive." there's something about the way he says "but that's dessert" that's like... firm but also gentle, like it's understanding but is still making a point to say "no, we're not doing that" and the "dinner is not over" also feels similarly firm, like a "you're not getting away that easy" the "so put it down" feels like it's talking directly to the listener to me, saying "yeah, I get it, it would be so peaceful and freeing, but you're not done yet, put it down." I really love how Jack chooses his metaphors, anyone could write a 'suicide is not the answer' song, but he decided he'd write it with the theme of a parent telling their child they need to finish their dinner before they eat their dessert
At 2:57-3:29, does anyone else think this part is referring to how instead of helping someone suicidal thru means of support or communication, most of time people choose to give mentally ill individuals medication or send to institutions to sedate/occupy them? Keep them doped up or away rather than actually deal with them?
Yeah I was in the hospital for attempted suicide and I was screaming and shit and they just put me in a isolated room and gave me a shot to make me sleep. 😶 (Edit: I also remember they tied me to the bed with restraints. Not really sure why tho
See I interpreted it as someone bring you down to earth, grounding you. Like if you're in a self-destructive spiral or your spiraling down you need someone to bring you down you need someone to bring you back to Earth. That's how I see it, as desperately wanting to ground you and support you while also wanting to die at the same time. You want to be saved but you don't. During rash moments you just need someone to bring you down to ground you
This is genuinely an anti-suicide thing that helps most of the time I feel like "Oh I've heard that so many times I know it's bad" but this just gives me a whole new perspective, I can't have dessert if I haven't finished dinner so I can't die without living out my life I'd miss out on so much just like how you would miss out on a nice dinner if you had dessert without finishing dinner
“Hold me down until I’m fine” really hits hard when you get sent to the psych ward. It feels like everyone’s holding you down, and they will only stop once your okay. A bitter sweet thing I guess, but it really resonates with me
i like how instead of it being happy go lucky and recycled stuff you usually hear, its more like death is your reward and break for finishing your entire life this man is too good at what he does and i love it
This actually shows a lot with how I deal with my depression, my mom treats me like a bestfriend/sister until she decides to be a mom, and I normally have to be the adult in our relationship, it can be EXTREMELY loose and she barely has rules but at the same time it's also kinda rule abiding and strict emotionally, when she's in a good mood I need to be in a good mood, if she's in w bad one I need to comfort her, I've found out this honestly isn't normal, and I've found out all of the issues with the relationship, I'm trying hard to fix it, but it feels like it can't be, and do to her emotionally controlling of me I don't always tend to look at all of my options all at once, it kinda feels like my friends talking with me about it, and how to explore my options while I'm trying to fix everything around me emotionally and get better, with my family, and it feels like I'm going insane

So here’s how I view this song. It’s a little somber more bitter sweet than happy like all the other comments say lol 0:46 you said, something’s wrong; and I can say the same to you. “Broken over and over again, what else can I do?” So here he’s talking to someone else, they’re stating how broken and desperate they feel. 1:02 I’ve tasted friendship, I’ve tasted you! Ive tasted dying and it tasted good! Ive tasted heartbreak, I’ve tasted food! I’ve tasted dying and it tasted good! But that’s dessert, you can have it when the dinner is gone. -so put it down. He expresses how he’s felt the same way, and how he’s attempted suicide and that it “tasted good” but that’s not the answer. So he encourages them to continue living until its their time to go. 2:14 you say “no more ways”. And now, you’ve got to choose. You said, “I’ve got the power, to go anytime!” And darling, it’s true. He can’t choose life for them, that’s their own decision, because they do have the power to take their own life at anytime. But, dinner isn’t over yet- so don’t kill yourself (basically) 2:59 run to, rise and leave me. Blind, right! And I feel it coming all the time. No way! But I really wanna draw the line. Okay! When you wanna keep me out of my mind- hey, what? - you want to put me down until I’m fine. “Run to rise and leave me” I feel like expresses that maybe they did take their life and left him. So he starts to feel his depression creep back in and his urge to die is very prominent but he doesn’t want to feel that way any more “I really wanna draw the line” and the people in his life “hold him down until he’s fine”. 3:15 Bored and hindering apart. No way! And I wanna move apart. Okay! But I’m never gonna see the light! -hey, what?- cause every body’s gonna hold me down until I’m fine. He feels like he’s falling apart , but he’s “never gonna see the light” (die) because his loved ones are making sure he’s okay. 3:30 near the story we got all the past in view. Got to where living with something you do- for the time. The voice changes and I feel like it’s his family/friends saying “we know why you feel this way and we’ve come to terms with having to live with you trying to kys and the way you feel. But it’s only for “the time” and you’ll feel better” The end chorus I feel like is him reminding himself that dinner is not over.
For awhile I thought the lyrics were “kidnap her it’s not about her”/“kidnap her it’s not all her” honestly I’m pleasantly surprised, this makes a lot more sense.
I just interpret it as talking about empty romantic and/or empty sexual relatationships where people just get into them hoping they make you happy/fullfilled. Kind of like the stereotype of the player who is secretly trying to fullfill their social/intimacy/vulnerability needs with empty sex and romance. Of course you can have your own perspective.

2:14 you say “no more ways”. And now, you’ve got to choose. You said, “I’ve got the power, to go anytime!” And darling, it’s true.
He can’t choose life for them, that’s their own decision, because they do have the power to take their own life at anytime. But, dinner isn’t over yet- so don’t kill yourself (basically)
2:59 run to, rise and leave me.
But it’s only for “the time” and you’ll feel better”
The end chorus I feel like is him reminding himself that dinner is not over.
This song is a freaking masterpiece
2:55 idk why but this part of song is my favorite, don't know if it's because of Jack Stauber's voice or the lyrics.
I guess *both*
this song had me sobbing
Are you feeling better?😢

Here from 2/7/23, I agree with this post
that chicken do indeed be vibin...
This song plays in the background of my life.
Pretty spot on lyrics! One mistake might be when you said “near the story” I i think it’s actually “middle of the story”
This song is something most people don't get I love how anti-suicidal the message is
I keep forgetting about the songs I loved and I finally found them on my old school account that I listened to music on during ICT
People think the "i tasted" is "autistic" for some reason.
I always thought he said "because no one is going to hold me down to feel loves ploy" and I feel kinda dumb now haha
In fact, life is a long big dinner and there is dessert at the end! so I guess..
"So put it down.." fucks me up every time
the chicken is vibing
the message is thriving
And I'm sitting here jiving
I’m sorry but the “Down until I’m fine” is SO GOOD???
people who eat desert before dinner: 💀☠🪦
that joke was dark

That fact that i am eating chicken and rice while it being my dinner and this pops up in my recommended is crazy.
i have to listen to this after rolling girl
i just
have to
YES
For awhile I thought the lyrics were “kidnap her it’s not about her”/“kidnap her it’s not all her” honestly I’m pleasantly surprised, this makes a lot more sense.
too cute! :)
toooooo cute>
Immortal bf tells their mortal gf how they shouldn’t commit suicide
The bridge is the best part of this song by a landslide.

My birthday being on nov 30: this song
Me: DiNnEr Is NoT oVeR
This is my favorite
is it just me or does 'i've tasted you have a double meaning'
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
I just interpret it as talking about empty romantic and/or empty sexual relatationships where people just get into them hoping they make you happy/fullfilled. Kind of like the stereotype of the player who is secretly trying to fullfill their social/intimacy/vulnerability needs with empty sex and romance. Of course you can have your own perspective.
AAAAA I LOVE it
the chicken is doing sit-ups
The chicken vibing fr
