  • So Truck Talk Tuesday is back, and this time we're talking about the MPG on my 2017 Ford F-250 Superduty. I wanted to talk about the gas mileage I've been getting while I've owned the truck for the last 6-9 months.
Many of you guys are new to the channel, but on Tuesdays we've been trying to do a Truck Talk Tuesday video, talking about my 2017 Ford F-250 Lariat truck. I wanted to do this as a way to answer some relevant questions, and help you guys decide on the truck if you're in the market.
This is just my experience when driving the truck over the last 6-9 months. Examples I go over are truck only, truck with plow, and truck with trailer. Hope the quick conversation helps you guys out.
What do you guys think about the MPG of the 17' 250's? Do you guys still prefer gas or diesel when it comes to talking fuel mileage? Leave me a comment down below!

2017 F250 6.2 along with 3.73 axel - I tow a 32' travel trailer- around 6800 dry weight & 8500lbs when full. I tow it roughly 4-5 times per year, so maybe 10 days per year. . Each trip averages roughly 90-100 miles one way. I love my truck, it's essentially perfect for me and my needs. I have noticed an ENORMOUS difference in fuel efficiency when varying my highway speeds. This is EXPONENTIALLY more evident while towing as well.
Without towing, if I maintain my max highway speed at 60mph while only commuting to work and back, which is 75% freeway and is roughly 12 miles away, I am able to average roughly 14.5-15mpg, as long as i don't ever accelerate quickly as well mind you. And then if I go 70mph and do not attempt to be fuel savvy, I will then average about 11.5-12mpg.
While towing my 8500lb Rig, my speed is even more important, as well as my acceleration. If I do not drive slowly and spend more time in 5th gear than OD, the gas mileage is laughable around 5mpg. However, if I'm cognizant of my speed and driving and try to be as fuel efficient as possible, I am able to nearly double it - around 8-10mpg (depending on the terrain)- keep in mind this will be almost ALL highway driving.
I honestly don't mind the suboptimal gas mileage to be honest, at least it hasn't been bothersome to date. . HOWEVER- In about 4 weeks, I will taking a family trip out west from Dayton Ohio all the way to the grand canyon, up through Bryce Canyon in Utah and then to Yellowstone before driving back home. . And I am SERIOUSLY dreading the drive, not because of having to pay for all the fuel or tow that far, but because of the BIGGEST ISSUE with that truck- it's ABSOLUTELY TINY 30 gallon gas tank 🙄🙄... Having to stop and refuel every 250miles(max) is going to add hours to our commute, literally...
If only the truck had a larger fuel tank - 40 gallons even would be absolutely perfect... I honestly cannot fathom someone towing a 10,000+lb fifth wheel or toy hauler with only 30 gallons of gas, regardless of the axel ratio etc.... The ONLY way I will consider buying a gas 3/4 ton pickup again- is if it at least provides an option to upgrade your fuel capacity. I know that sounds silly considering how rarely I tow, but its such an inconvenience WHILE towing to have to stop for gas every few hours, especially for me, since I always have dogs with us that get stirred up every time I stop 🙄 ugh.. otherwise, I LOVE my truck 🤷‍♂️

Bought my first Diesel last July and it is a 2017 Ford F-250 SuperDuty Lariat. Bought it used with 1200 miles. That’s one reason I started following your channel cause of your experience buying your truck. Love your channel! Getting about 19-20 mixed driving with no trailer or hauling a heavy load. I drive a lot about 25k-30k a year though. I would get the diesel again when I buy my next truck. Does everything and more that I need it to do and the extra power is fun.

2017 F250 6.2 city/hwy I get about 14-14.5, 15 on highway roughly, empty. When I have tri-axle trailer with 5ton skid steer or John Deere 50 mini excavator on I get between 10 and 13. Not the best but I did not want to pay the extra $11000 here in Canada for the diesel version. Works just the same tows great!

I got a 05 F-250 with the smaller engine 5.4L, it gives me 8-9 mpg in the city and 12-14 highway, it has 300,000 miles on the body engine and trany don't know bought it used, but so far it's a really reliable truck and it takes care of my every day need.

It’s all preference Brian! This is my first diesel hauling 12k. I feel more control versus a gas. I got it deleted and I average 21-24 6.7 at 70 mph. Towing 12k 14.5. I wouldn’t go back to a gas. All 3 Diesel engines are great. It’s the emissions that suck and make the truck suck. Get rid of that at you have an engine that’ll go 300k easily. Love your channel

For me a solo guy running a landscape business on a 6x12 trailer (2klbs) an F-150 w/the 2.7L turbo eco boost is averaging 18-19mph in city traffic. I can/do see 23-24 mpg on the open highway (with loaded trailer). No problems hauling 5 yards of mulch up steep inclines. I've been very impressed with the ability and cost savings of the little v-6 in comparison to an older 5.4L triton. The motor performs in its given GVW class

Got a 15 f350 6.2l I get 11.6 mpg with trailer and 11.9 without don’t know how accurate that is. I looked at diesel but for 7300.00 I’ll keep that money and get a new mower!!! 6.2 is plenty of power and torque. Keep on keeping on Brian!!!

I have a '17 F-250 XLT Premium FX4 I bought in Oct of 2017 and it has the 6.2 gas with 3.73 gears. I have a little over 15k miles on it and combined city/hwy mileage is a consistent 14.7 mpg. I'm not a lead foot, which helps, but my daily commute is 100 miles round trip with stop and go city traffic about half the drive and interstate driving at 75-80 mph the other half of the time. I bought the F-250 to replace an F-150 when I bought my 30' boat, which weighs between 10k and 11k lbs. on the trailer depending on what I'm carrying. Mileage drops to 7-10 mpg towing, mostly flat city & highway driving. I have no complaints, the truck is strong as a bull moose empty or towing, but with the 10,000 lb. GVWR package and solid front axle it rides like a buckboard, but overall I've been real happy with it. Thought about the diesel but don't think I'd ever see a return on the investment, and didn't want to deal with the EGR system, DEF hassle, etc.

My 2012 F250 crew cab short bed 4x4 gets 17 to 19 highway, 9 to 10 in heavy stop and go traffic, and usually between 12.5 to 14 combined when not towing. Overall I'm happy with it. This is coming from a 2005 CCLB 4x4 dually with the 6.0 which only got 12mpg no matter how it was driven.

If you're towing all the time a bigger engine will always get better mpg. I used a 2000 Chevy Express 3500 van 5.7L (350 cubic inch) it had a 9600 GVWR.
Empty (only happened once) it got 12mpg. Loaded to full capacity (most of the time) 9-12mpg. Towing a race car, you guessed it about 9-10mpg.
My buddy towed an enclosed trailer about 7,500# ny to fla and got single digit mpg and had to drive 55 with his first generation EcoBoost 3.5. Suspension. Turbo went out too. He went back to v8

My 17 F-250 superduty Supercab 4x4 Xlt premium 6.2 , is doing around 14-17 mpg highway. Has around 10k on odometer. Gas mileage has been going up as engine breaks in more, which compared to when I first got with zero mileage on odometer and was barely doing 10mpg. Again it only did better mileage after 8,000 mark, and continues to improve. Also have a 8.6 fisher V-plow minute mount2. When I plow it does 5mpg lol. Absolutely love this truck, owned a 5.4 lariat 2006 since new and traded in for this beast and will always own a super duty for plowing.Never had any issues with both of them.Love my Ford trucks!🇺🇸👍😎

Definitely liked the way the diesel drives compared to the gas... so when I upgrade later this year it will be diesel for sure. Here in SoCal the diesels hold their value much better than gas trucks.

got a 2006 f-350 SRW 6.0 powerstroke. it gets around 16 MPG when not towing around town. and about 20-22 MPG highway whilst not towing. tbh I haven't really reset my trip odometer to see my MPG when towing my boat and my trailer, id guess around 10-12 tho
Edit: it does have a tune, so that helps the milage (something to note)

Geez. Nice to know after 33 years since my truck was made we've come a long ways in technology and still getting the same gas mileage out of a 3/4 ton gas truck.... From the time my truck was stock to now a aluminum headed 351W with good exhaust, intake, carb and a good cam pushing around 350HP and 350TQ at the crank with a 3 speed trans with no overdrive or lockup, getting 10 city and 13 or so highway both stock and now.... I average 9-11 towing and hauling enough weight to put the bump stops to the rear axle. Which it takes 5200 pounds to make that happen by the way. Guess I'll just keep what I got, cheap insurance and it never really gives me any trouble.

Unloaded and non-towing applications: Max 19.9 mpg at 75 mph with the average being 17. City driving under same conditions averages 14.1 mpg. I have had the 6.7 powerstroke. The 3.5 EcoBoost and the 5l V8. The 6.2 from ford is by far the best value for your money when you're towing / hauling 10,000 lbs or less across all these engines. A big factor is also running a 3/4 ton chassis or bigger. Half tons are grocery getter trucks.

2018 2500 duramax best I've seen empty for maybe half an hour at highway speed is 23mpg. Most I've loaded is just shy over 10k lb got a little over 12mph in central Texas got it Dec. 1st and to date has 14827 miles on it just because on a 3 day weekend we can put 1000 miles on the truck I would stick to the diesel but if I just drove around town with the occasional weekend toys 2 hours away from home would get a gas truck

I've had the f350 dually 6.7 diesel and I sold it to buy the 6.2 f250 so glad I did that. Just the price of oil changes not that that had anything to do with selling it I just felt I didn't need it to tow our 8,000 lb rv trailer. Gas is alot better with the 6.2 and it rides so much better when I'm not hooked up. The cost difference between buying diesel vrs gas about 10K so Unless your towing big payloads I'd stick with gas.

Diesel engines don't last as long as they used to, the EPA killed them. I had a dodge diesel every time something broke if was 3k. I now own a F-550 with the 6.8 gas motor. I could replace the whole engine for 5k. I get 8 mpg. I own a weed control company and have a 500 gallon tank on it and carry a z sprayer on a custom platform on the back (no trailer). I'm am in neighborhoods all day long turning the truck on and off about 20 times a day. Nothing is going to get milage in that situation. Ford is the only manufacturer that one can buy a gas motor over a one ton. Thanks for sharing.

I can say that the engines now are nothing like the old ones I bought it with my dad's blessing and input on how diesel was so much better then gas. But after owning mine and reading tons of stuff on the newer models not worth it anymore the reliability just isn't there anymore. Not only do they maybe last 100k miles but if u need engine work its almost always lift the body that's 20 hrs labor to start. To me now it seems if you need a desiel might as well go class 7 medium duty truck.

I had a 6.4 hemi ram. Mileage was terrible. Went to a diesel and never looked backed. I tow a 12000lb 5th wheel once or twice a month otherwise I drive 14 miles a day for work. Mpg are better all around till it does a regen. Cost to fill them up are about the same due to I get a little more to a tank with the diesel and when towing I can go almost 70 miles more per tank. I.bought into that diesel is not the way to go anymore and i won't make that decision anymore. Maintenance is more buy not by much. I have never had an emissions problem or any other problems yet(knock on wood)! 6.4 Hemi has the power but mpgs are just terrible.

Gas for maintenance crews all day.. anything I ever saved running a diesel was thrown into maintaining it. And most importantly never a ford diesel... anything after the old 7.3 can’t make it over 100,000 miles without tens of thousands of dollars thrown at the engine. Just my 2 cents, have experienced too many trucks to count in all brands

However, I'm starting to get sick of diesel on a day to day basis. Heavier. More $$ fuel. More $$ maintenance. Noisier. And I'll not own another out of warranty, so ultra $$ buying new only.
