I think there’s a big difference between Gohan being a pacifist, and Gohan not INTENTIONALLY wanting to lose himself and give in to his rage. (It’s not like he’s ever INTENTIONALLY lost his shit before and gone rage mode. It always just happened. And the dude was afraid he’d go to far.)
I think a lot of the time people seem to forget Gohan vs Cell was Gohans first time being put in a position where he can decide the outcome. Him saying he doesn’t like to fight against Freiza wouldn’t mean anything because he couldn’t beat Frieza .
Gohan couldn’t win until SSJ2. Not sure why some think SSJ1 would’ve done it.
As Gohan awakens half way, Cell even says “don’t think think you can win by powering up a bit. That won’t be enough”
Perfect Cell blatantly had the ability to bully SSJ1. If he were strong enough, Gohan would’ve at least blocked and parried everything. Why take punches he can avoid? He couldn’t, until SSJ2.
@@ViltrumiteIsRite99 SSJ2 Gohan with a destroyed arm was at half power against Super Perfect Cell, a much more powerful form of Cell. Gohan didn't need the actual powerup, what he needed was a mental switch.
Gohan was controlling the pace of the fight as SSJ1, that meant he was the one in charge of the battle.

Nice lil pep talk from Papa Son, and he can push back, and basically rekindle his full powers! That, vs 50% Gohan ACTUALLY just bucked up, and ate the horse.
And it’s hard to accept that SSJ1 Gohan could’ve done it, when we watch the weaker Son Goku give a much closer fight. Cell fought to exhaustion, vs bullied a child who didn’t wanna fight.
@@numberhunter62 On another topic, I’m not sure why Gohan starts this “I don’t wanna fight” speech when he steps up to Cell. Sure, Gohan never CHOSE to test himself for fun or anything, but… this kid just trained for 9/10 months or something, and surpassed full on adult Saiyans. The multiplier Gohan got to do that was cracked.
But at the end of the day… Gohan knows that Cell is a bug monster that has eaten human lives, and intends on booming-earth.

When Goku picked him to fight Gohan was in no way mentally prepared for such a burden.
I also think Gohan might have been afraid of his anger, not knowing what he might do if he snapped.
It doesn't matter if gohan doesn't like to fight he as a character was always portrayed as somebody who would do what needed to be done, but when goku takes off the training wheels off and really expects him to fight gohan was like nah dad you do it.

Gohan "hating fighting'" and "not enjoying training" is out of character. I agree with those points. What he didnt like, or hell he didnt "want" to do was burden the responsibility of being the savior. He never thought of himself to be the strongest, he couldnt fathom the amount of responsibility that would entail. When he was pit against cell, knowing that everyone who "should" be stronger than him was just watching him, he didnt know what to do. After all, he is just a child, his father is the legendary super sayian, gohan was just there to be a support character. His reason for crying, his reason for feeling weak, it was not because he hated fighting or that he didnt want to kill cell. It was because he didnt think he could. It was because his father put in him all this trust while gohan didnt for a second believe he could actually do it. Gohan was not prepared. Goku screwed up because he didnt realize that Gohan's adventure was being a support character and watching Goku be the hero, not being the hero himself.
I still blame piccolo and gotenks for Gohan losing to buu because Gohan was handling him but somehow piccolo didn’t hear a piece of buu sneaking behind them and the kids thought he needed help when he was just fine

I think my problem with Gohan isn't that he's a like scientist or whatever job he has.
It's that he knows the seriousness of him slacking off. He has seen Frieza invade and kill him in seconds if not for Goku coming back in an instant.
He's seen the tournament of power threaten their existence.
It's the same story constantly. "Oh, boy! I've really slacked on my training! **jabs once** I'm back! Where we going??" Like just telling that story once may be fine. But telling it 5 times through super and superhero is a murderous watch.

Wow thats a really compelling argument. There were points that seemed to read WAY too deep but 90% of it was solid.
Yes, Gohan has done fighting in serious circumstances, but that's only ever been when he's felt morally and personally obligated to do so, and when he knew he had his dad to fall back on. Helping fight Vegeta because of guilt over his weakness causing the Z Fighters to die. Going to Namek for the same reasons and performing well, knowing his dad would be there in a week.
Then you have Goku giving up against Cell and putting the fate of the world on his shoulders, something he has no experience with and a responsibility he doesn't want. Gohan has never been the hero, and he doesn't want to, so he doesn't have his heart in it let alone the drive to unleash his latent potential.
I watched this same video and made a comment about how I think this was just a misunderstanding of Gohan in the Cell games. Honestly, it draws heavy parallels to Goku misunderstanding his son (not perpetuating the "bad dad" narrative by the way). I talked about how Gohan fighting because he feels like he has a duty or necessity to and him actually liking it are very different ideas that I feel like are being jumbled together here, with albeit very good arguments. I also think bringing in Future Gohan in feels like it disregards how these Gohan's situations differ for the sake of strengthening the argument. I feel like the story does a good enough job at telling you that Gohan fights because his friends fight and because he has to to survive these deathly situations he finds himself in but when put onto the forefront for the very first time with no one to back him up but himself along with the realization of the misunderstanding, he simply folds.

As someone who watched og db… I stand by that its the best story out of the dragon ball franchise might not have some of the best fights but the story and adventure goku goes through is what makes it so good plus ngl him meeting grandpa gohan again apways makes me tear up. I would love to see a faithful remaster of og db tbh so to answer this yes would love to see more og db stuff. Respect where you fav series started.

From the Saiyan up to the Cell Saga, Gohan's eagerness to train is pretty much because aliens with planet killer strength threaten everything he knows, with Goku pushing him as much as he can once Gohan's potential is clear. He still has his saiyan genes but once there's peace bro takes the time to do what he wants to as a human. Ya'll gotta remember that Gohan was like 11 during the Cell Games and Goku being dead the next 7 years basically means he lost the only motivator capable to train with him on somewhat equal footing

His dad tapped out early, gave cell a SENZU BEAN, and all the people who could be helping by jumping cell (something done regularly in saiyan saga and freeza saga) just standing back doing nothing. That’s enough bullshit to contend with that I don’t blame Gohan for not putting his pacifism behind him like he did previously. He fought when it was desperate, when there was no other choice. But going up to the ring, he was aware of several ways that the situation could’ve been avoided in the past few minutes alone. It’s gotta be frustrating.
I'm pretty sure they weren't jumping Cell because it was still a tournament. Goku jumped in when Cell was literally about to blow up the planet. And they tried jumping him when Cell returned just for none of their attacks to really work on him. Jumping would've not only lead to more bodies... Gohan, who still would've been the only one capable of beating him would simply lose if it wasn't set up in a 1v1 scenario from the start. Imo.

I think his point with Gohan is it’s odd to see him go from willing to fight to protect others, to on his knees crying while everyone around him is getting killed because he all of a sudden doesn’t want to fight to protect others. It could have worked if it was set up, but like he said, he wasn’t set up for it. Your point regarding this is really hypothetical since we don’t see Gohan contemplating if fighting is really the right choice. At most, he was just scared, but got over it. If a villain was doing something evil, he immediately jumped in to stop them. Krillin literally tried to stop Gohan from attacking Frieza’s men, but Gohan ignored him and kicked one through a building. It’s one thing to hate death matches, but it’s something else to hate fighting all together, which is what pacifism is. I’m sure Superman hates fights to the death, but you don’t see him choosing not to fight psychopathic murderers.

5:14 true as this may be for his training with Piccolo, those rage boosts just become a reality that he truly is built like that. Tell me. What do you think Namek Kid Gohan's doing if he sees those Cell Jrs throw even one punch? It ain't gon be some pacifistic bullshit, KRILLIN was the one stopping him from approaching Freeza and his two lackies. Gohan's the one who stepped up against Third Form Freeza where warriors like Vegeta were pussying out. I hate that there's a group that refuses to acknowledge that this Pacifistic nature isn't really there most of the time. He's a Pacifist in normal situations, but he steps up in every damn fight he's in. He even overcame his fears in the Saiyan saga when getting the rage boost vs Nappa. Nappa shut it down, and of course, anyone at that point is going to be scared, but let's not try and misinterpret that part either. There's a lot more evidence towards Gohan willingly being a savage vs him wanting to be a Pacifist in the HEAT of battle. To be honest, why wouldn't he get angry at how badly Cell beat him down to begin with?
The only argument I like is that Goku was Gohan's teacher up to this. Goku consistently spared people that his teachers were training him to kill. It's a true self fulfilling prophecy, and I like that take, but these weird takes that revolve right around to being disproven don't sit right.
Lol Gohan really is the most realistic character in dragon ball based on how humans are we all slacked off in our lives some of us are family men and have a wife and children even in life most of have gotten cocky and feed into our own hype And underestimated certain circumstances in life and then we fail but it about getting back uo but Gohan does has his faults but he is more realistic then Goku vegeta and piccolo and broly at least gohan chose to get back up after he failed.
Gohan couldn’t agree with what Cell felt like he needed to do to get stronger and Cell’s ideology of power in general. I think Gohan recognized Cell’s similarities to the Z fighters and he hoped Cell could pull a Vegeta, knowing that was Cell’s true path to power. Gohan knows he is stronger than Cell, he doesn’t have to prove it for himself or others and I think that’s what he meant when he said he doesn’t like to fight like his dad does.
Also while it is childish and illogical in a sense, avoiding the responsibilities unfairly thrust onto him going into the Buu saga is good character writing to me.

I don't understand the hypocrisy in your argument about Gohan being a pacifist making sense but then him being a pacifist not taking effect when there's seven years of peace, no villain in sight, no reason to fight, and under chi chi's care who makes him study like a maniac. Like its obvious he might prioritze training for like a year or two afterwards but almost a decade and no big bad???? he's not training like Vegeta is for all that time especially when his father, the main reason of training, is not around/ piccolo isnt near either.

Gohan had his big epiphany in the Cell Games and has no excuse to regress the way he did in the Buu arc, where he LOST power because he wasn't training. Because I guess his father's sacrifice and final wishes meant nothing to him I guess. Prioritizing a normal life is one thing, which he kind of admits when he says it'd be different if Gohan simply didn't get stronger in the Buu arc. Prioritizing it THIS much after everything that happened last arc, to the point where he got weaker, is where the problem is.
School Boy Gohan and his day to day life with occasional Superhero action isn't nearly as interesting as some martial arts monkey boy and some smart tech chick journey different parts of the world hunting for some wish-granting orbs and fighting bad guys who are also after them. Or monkey boy finding a master and training to enter a martial arts tournament. Or fighting an evil military group or demon king. That's the difference between the original intent of the Buu arc and OG DB. Gohan isn't MC material.

Lastly the Saiyaman Arc would’ve been cool and set up a lot of pivotal character development for Gohan, Vidal, and eventually his child and got fans more interested in that family later on unlike Now in super where you don’t gaf about any of it that much.
Here’s a better version of the buu arc: We explore a world where Gohan does the martial arts tourney , goes on adventures as the great saiyaman throughout the major cities with video sometimes when needed for small mini boss villains like Dragonball days , this would work short term and then after like a season of that you could add a mystery element to the story where the supreme Kai touches down and tries to help stop babidi before buu is revived Builds up the suspension for a while before the huge deal goes down at another martial arts tourney and then you can go from where the real buu saga happens.

Gohan's not the kinda go to go on big journeys like his dad without some bs obligating him to. Gohan's not the kind of guy to pursue power for power's sake like his dad. Gohan isn't the guy kind of guy with a history of beef with people that could want revenge on him. Gohan isn't the guy whose mere existence leads to lots of conflicts to keep the story going as the MC. He's not MC material outside of the occasional arc centered around him. Or unless you wanna turn him into Goku 2, which again, ain't his character.
And ain't no one tryna watch some bootleg Sentai show in DRAGONBALL outside of, again, the occasional arc or few episodes. It's good material to built up into a more serious conflict people expect from Dragonball, but certainly not the direction the show should start going.

people who want gohan to be the main character, or even just a more central charcter, please try to understand that the spirit of the series is about tireless self improvment, and goku reflects that... gohan doesint, he's shown that he is fine with being weaker, his priority has always been his studies, thats fine you can consider that a form of self improvment, but goku piciloo, tien and vegeta, these people perfectly reflect the shows core message, through tireless self decipline and work you can achive great things, you can achive almost anythign... charcters like yamcha, krillain and gohan are happy putting in a respectable 9 to 5 job and basic excorsize and living quit peaceful lives... and thats just not the core of the show, and please try not to feel picked on for wanting gohan to get more attention... that feeling is for the tien fans. who having been allowed to see a tien win since he nearly killed him self in the cell games just to holding cell in one place for a few minutes... ill be frank, im not a big fan of tien he was always just... there for me... but he deserves better as one of the shows main continuing martial artists... he trains hard as anyone else but gets less gains then krillain... its just sad. ^^;
Og Dragon Ball is a great watch. If you like Z, you’ll like the OG. Plenty of fighting, bunch of cool villians, training arcs, & the start of power creep.

The problem is and always will be that gohan is supposed to be the smartest yet his character arc repeating is the dumbest one to repeat with how smart he is he should've learned immediately that he shouldn't play with his enemy and destroyed buu

I skimmed the relevant chapters to double check this and frankly, the guy critiquing Gohan is leaving out A LOT of context.
I will talk about Gohan’s berserker rages later, but for now let’s talk about this idea that he is a pacifist. Frankly, I think the key problem here is that the term is being applied erroneously in the first place. Gohan is not and has never been a pacifist. If he was, he’d have never attended the Cell Games in the first place, let alone in his fighting clothes. Simply put Gohan is someone who doesn’t LIKE to fight, but who is willing to do so if necessary.
And this was the case in the Cell Games. Before he went SS2, he DID initially fight Cell, he DID try to stop him hurting his friends, he DID try to get mad and unlock his power. He didn’t WANT to do it though. He didn’t LIKE it. I think this is a big area of nuance a lot of fans trip over when it comes to this discussion. They acknowledge Gohan is not a fight-achollic like Goku or Vegeta, but then they do not recognise that there is a middle ground between that and being a full on pacifist. In Gohan’s case, he is in truth a middle ground between a pacifist and guys like Tien, Krillin and Piccolo. Those guys are not Saiyans in regards to their attitude to combat, competition and their drive to improve their skills, however, they absolutely DO value those things and define their identity by them to a HUGE extent. Gohan doesn’t and never did. This is why he says in the manga that he doesn’t like to fight ‘…like Dad does’.
He trained and he engaged in combat because the situations demanded that of him, or because it was a bonding experience with his father. He loves his father and wants to spend time with him and during most of the Cell Saga before the Cell Games Goku was either unconscious or training to fight Gero’s creations; therefore Gohan was inevitably going to train if he wanted to hang out with his Dad whom he hadn’t seen much of for the past 2+ years (due to the Saiyan invasion, journey to Namek and Goku’s absence after beating Frieza). At the same time, Gohan recognised MAYBE if he got stronger he could help avoid this apocalyptic future Trunks told them all about. It doesn’t mean he WANTED to do it though. In other words, Gohan did NOT like fighting or training but he TOLERATED it. A lot of people don’t LIKE going to the gym or cleaning their house, but they tolerate it because it is a necessity.
When it came to Cell, he was frankly just plain different to the villains Gohan had met before. Whilst Cell was just as ruthless, arguably even sadistic, as the Saiyans or the Frieza Force, when Gohan was face to face with him he was mostly just an evil version of the very same martial artists Gohan had grown up around. Cell could have destroyed the planet days earlier, but he deliberately held off on it and offered the Z-Fighters a fighting chance to save everyone by holding the Cell Games in the first place. Cell WANTED the competition. So, whilst misguided, it wasn’t unreasonable for Gohan to try persuading Cell to just stop and citing the fact that he doesn’t like fighting or killing. Cell had deliberately constructed a scenario to push himself to his limits for the thrill of battle, and threatened to kill everyone if they didn’t play along. Whilst the end result might be different, this is a very different motivation to Freeza or Vegeta, and those are characters that Gohan knows his father showed mercy to and offered an out to. He also knows, though he never experienced it, that Piccolo was once a terrible person too and his father’s mercy worked with him.
I’m not saying Gohan was out to redeem Cell, but when put in a situation he didn’t want to be in (for entirely consistent character reasons), when confronted with a guy who is VERY different in mentality to Vegeta, Frieza or even Piccolo when they were the main villains (Vegeta didn’t come to Earth for competition) and when he is of an age where he is older and more in control of his emotions, it is not unreasonable for Gohan to try and persuade Cell to just stop. It isn’t that he is a pacifist, it is that the variables in the Cell Games are just VERY different to those in Gohan’s previous battles.
He sees, he hopes, that Cell might be open to persuasion (he isn’t, #16 drills that into him) and therefore he can just avoid fighting or killing, stuff that he is not unwilling to do, but really doesn’t like doing. And in this case, he is doing it in a context of pseudo-competition and when he is being put on the spot. This is in truth, his first true 1v1 fight, and it isn’t against someone he’s personally witnessed brutally murdering people. To make matters worse, the deciding factor on his victory is him getting angry and losing control of himself. Not only is this likely an unpleasant sensation, but there are several reasons why Gohan in this moment would be finding that very difficult.
As Sage pointed out, we are dealing with a Gohan is a bit older and a bit more mindful of himself and his actions; more in control of his emotions. He is no teenager, but he is also closer to a teen in his mentality than he was circa the Namek saga when he was younger. Not much younger, but in these formative years of youth, even 1 year is not insignificant. When you are 9 your parents still chastise you for being childish, not because you can actually help it but because you can help it more than you could when you were like 5. In other words, Gohan had matured to the point where his outbursts of rage (accompanied by massive boosts in power) were inevitably going to be harder to come by. This is evident by the fact that, unless I am forgetting something, Gohan NEVER got a rage boost in the entire Cell Saga before the climactic SSj2 transformation. Yes, in the anime he arguably did to go Super Saiyan, but we never see this in the manga. Whilst, logically, he probably had a bout of rage in the Time Chamber in the manga as well, I think the fact that Toriyama doesn’t show it might not have been an incidental detail.
Let’s also consider that Goku’s entire game plan for surpassing Super Saiyan relied not upon digging deeper into what unlocked SS power in the first place (rage) but going the opposite direction, in MASTERING the SS form so that it became as natural as their base forms, with no energy wasted upon transforming, maintaining the form or upon the natural aggression that the form is packaged with. So, whilst mastering SS was essential to unlocking SS2 (and thereby beating Cell), ironically, the act of doing that is counterintuitive as you need to first MASTER your aggression in the SS form.
You then have the fact that Gohan was put on the spot as Sage pointed out. Sage is correct in observing that Gohan had never been in a true blue 1v1 before, all his other fights were group struggles in do or die death matches. Whilst Cell was promising to kill everyone, the situation was different as he was only going to do that AFTER the sportsmanship activity of the tournament was over with. It wasn’t a heightened situation of Cell posing a direct and immediate danger to Gohan or the others the way Vegeta or Frieza did. Even when he fought Gohan 1v1, Gohan knew Cell was in it for the thrill of battle, he wasn’t after blood first and foremost. And again, this is an older and more trained Gohan than the ones in arcs past. This Gohan is much more capable in his abilities to defend himself and survive in a fight, and he knows it too. And knowing himself is key here, because it is REALLY hard to lose your cool and go berserker when you are actively trying to make it happen. In the anime, Gohan similarly struggled to consciously get angry enough to become a Super Saiyan. He had to be put into a legitimate life or death situation, where he NEEDED to survive in the heat of the moment.

Where did Kami come from? We don't know, we just assume they're demons. Later on they're aliens.
Where did Goku come from? No one even makes assumptions, we just have no idea. He's told us that he's an alien later.
Toriyama does this a lot where he leaves stuff open ended, and if he ever needed to connect something he can just fill in the blanks with a character. He did it with Goku and Raditz, he did it with the Namekians, he did it was Gero arguably since we didn't even know he existed until then. Its not like they're plot points going to be told later, its years apart where we have no indication of this connection until the audience is told to.
And what gets me about this is that the characters dont talk to each other, they talk to the audience. I noticed this recently but the character is basically looking at you saying "Wanna know why Goku has a tail? He's an alien, and I'm one of them, and you had no idea all this time!" Its like Toriyama was aware that we would be confused so he's indirectly expositing every single drop of information he left out until that very moment.

new take incoming: Goku was a fully realized character in og dragon ball. He wouldn't have spared raditz or anyone else, he never had a problem killing people, he got worse in Z. Z is gohans story mentored by Goku, you can't deny that thats how it was gunna be. I'm not sure how I would have rewritten the buu arc or anything in the future, but I still think a series could have worked, you would have just had to rethink the entirety of it.

Even if during the cell games that gohan was hinted to be stronger then goku at the start of the cell games, he didnt want to fight. He had no desire to fight because even during the fight, he thought goku was holding back. Because he believes his dad to be stronger then him and cell. Theres no reason for gohan tobthink hes stronger then goku, even after the time chamber. That was poor writing fo gohans character to be forced into fighting a deathmatch for the world. And before people say "WELL ACTUALLY HE HAD A CHOICE". A ultimatum is not a choice. Gohan is fighting and the strongest again in the current manga. And tbh, he has a great life and wants to do something different with his time, which is fair.
There was a lot of back and forth because narratively it feels like he should have taken the mantle but the series hasn’t given it to him. He keeps learning the same lesson about protecting his loved ones. It feels like they’ve finally made a decision. In the latest manga chapter Goku straight up says to Gohan he will pass the earth’s protection onto him when he’s gone now that he sees Gohan’s power is back and stronger than ever.

The reason I don't like Gohan, like at all (except Future Gohan), is because he stands opposite to what dragon ball is about. Dragon ball in its core essence is about putting in hardwork and becoming better than the "you" of yesterday (hella abridged). Tell me one time Gohan gets a power boost that he worked hard for, that he wanted to acquire.
