Thanks for the encouragement David! We feel showing the entire story is critical so folks really see what developing a property entails. Of course, we can't share every detail, but it would be a shame if we sugar-coated everything and acted like we did everything perfect, the first time, on-time, and under-budget. HA!

The look on Jesse's face is the lock of a man who woke up thinking he could conquer the world in one day, and by 3 pm realized he still hasn't even left his home town.

My wife and i hand dug our 43' 3" deep trench for our rv dump 5 years ago. I remember we started at 6am every morning and worked till around 11am, when i would shower and go to work and my wife would then take care of being mom of two kids, household chores, cooking and cleaning. It was rough work. Jessie you are strong and our wives are even stronger. Dont let the trolls eat at you. You're a very inspiring team. A mile is walked one step at a time. Take care of yourselves and start at first light to stay ahead of the heat. DON'T EVER GIVE UP!!!

I gutted and rebuilt a house largely on my own, but that's in a city with water and sewer... and it's been a major struggle of unexpected overruns of time and money. I can relate to the pain, but starting from scratch as you have is so so much more. BUT you'll get done and eventually you can look back and be proud of it, trust me. Keep at it, do it right so you only have to do it once (SERIOUSLY), and keep making videos!

You guys are awesome!! You have the hardest working wife!
A few years back we were building a welded garage out of 4" tube steel. We would get up and work as soon as we could see, 5am - 2pm, and the temp would be 92 at sun up and 106 at 2pm (July). Stop for a few hours and get started again at 6pm and work until 10pm or midnight. We did that night after night for a month. The only part I didn't do was pour the slab foundation.
So I can say, "I know how you feel!"
You will be so proud when it is finished.
All I can say looking back is that it was all worth it. I'm still excited to tell people, "We built our house and built the garage ourselves."
Hang in there! It is all good.

Things will become better as soon as you are out of the ground. Your gravity feed water system with cistern is clever. For my rain water collectiion system with cistern, I rely on an electircal pump - no electricity, no flushing the toilet anymore.... You won't have that problem. Regarding the price, I think around 10000 dollars, is not that off. I paid around 4500 dollars for my rainwater collection system and the cistern is about 10 feet away from my house. The pipes are rather short and partly double encased. The guy, who sold the system didn't want to fully encase the poly lines, because he feared, it could flood our basement through the encasement.
One more thing that I learned during building our house - As non-professional you might end up doing things three times, until it is right. But then, it is better than any professional would have done it.

Keep going, you will see the light at the end of the tunnel. Speaking from experience. On my first mother's day I learned how to mix cement. We started with a house trailer. Hubby wanted to put cement pads under the trailer so the wood ties would not sink down in the ground and rot. Who knew that in a few years we would later take out the cement pads out so we could put a cement block foundation under and turn it into a house. After thirty years and dozens of projects later we are still at it. Now we are replacing items, like roof shingles and several windows. I'm starting to believe if we do finish everything we are done for. All I can really say is that we are debt free because we did as we had the money. Stick to it.

I want to thank you guys from the bottom of my heart for showing me how foolish I was to even imagine that I could build an off-grid homestead. You made me happy here in my little apartment in the city. Procrastination and downright laziness has become a virtue for me. I will take a trip in my RV to enjoy Idaho for while. Then come home, pay my rent and utility bills and watch you guys on RUclips doing something I could never do.

My husband and I admire you guys so much. I'm 56 and my husband is 61. We were both raised with the outlook of "if you want it, you build it. My grandparents built a one acre pond with shovels, buckets and a wheelbarrow. He built a poured concrete home. He built forms, for every single wall (inside and out), floors too. He loved concrete and built that home, a block building, and a set of brick apartments. As kids we were good labor and we willingly helped. The biggest equipment he had was a tractor, and a cement mixer. We bought an older home and all of our improvements have been by our hands. Our first garden here was accomplished by a mattock, shovel, rake and hoe, and we bought here in 2010, not when we were your age. I can see all of your frustrations, and have felt the weariness in your eyes. But I can also see the sense of accomplishment there as well. Don't give up. I admire both of you and wish more people today had your work ethic.

It's times like these, when you're beyond exhausted and you feel like you can't do one more project, you need to take time and look back and reflect on how much progress you've made. You started with a undeveloped piece of land, and look at it now! Every baby step, gets you closer to your goal! I'm pretty sure when you finish this daunting project, within a few weeks, you'll be dreaming up other projects you can do! Thanks for sharing your journey.

Tip for stickering wood: Make sure your sticks are lined up vertically and the whole line of stickers is supported to the ground or in the case at 5:27 a big beam. This will keep your lumber straighter!

You guys have made incredible progress since you arrived on your property. Just take a look at everything you have achieved in a fairly short period of time and without really having any experience doing it. Thanks so much for sharing your ups and down. Now, go have a beer and relax.

yeah, but it's their journey. Couples in the past have done the same things. Work hard, learn as you go, take on a big dream.
People have successes and failures. Some people take a decade to build their homes. It is back breaking work when on a slim budget. Even people that have money enjoy the challenge and pride in doing it themselves. I see how home builders would take issue with the time and planning, but that is not the point of what their journey is. I hope they go slower or delegate some labor out, because when they are 50, my crystal ball sees something like rotator cuff surgery.

Alyssa, you are amazing. Your stamina, great attitude, and willingness to work hard shows in every single video, but maybe never as much as this one. You are inspirational to me. Jesse, you seem tired and a little beat down here - I'm hoping that you are doing all right overall and that your back is staying healthy. Prayers for you guys, and hoping that the window between shooting and posting this video brought you a lot of progress and some of the load off your mind! All the best to you both!

You guys might want to put your stickers closer to the end of your boards. The boards will check/crack to the first sticker from the ends. An old Miller told me that years ago.

I have been watching for awhile and I remember when you first got to the site. What progress you have made since then. I have been down the same road but basically by myself for 80 percent of the journey. It can be done but time and money are tremendous factors. Keep the faith and one day you will sit on the deck and look at all you have done and non of the nay sayers will fog what you have accomplished with your own two hands. The more you accomplish the more skills you can put in your toolbox and the easier it will get. One task at a time and one day at a time. You have come a long way. Rest, plan, and execute. Take some time away to rejuvenate the spirit.

My wife and I with a slightly different scenario, have been facing exactly the same type of experience trudging through it for over 3 years now.. gets you down at times. But your video provides support in the sense of knowing what we experience is not unique, so let me share the same with you too. Keep going, remember all you have achieved together, your really doing and outstanding job!

You two are doing great ! All good things takes hard work . Keep up the good work , just don't let it get in away of your alone time together . It's ok to take a break and enjoy each other . There's always another day . I know that when I get frustrated and burned out doing something. I take a break and come back to it fresh . You guys are great

It's so great you all are documenting your work. It is great for those who watch and also for you to look back on as well as helping troubleshoot any future problems. Days like you went through in this video are hard to take but will be fun to look at later. Maybe??? Anyway, great job and thanks for taking us along!

You remind me of my husband and I, when we first moved here. Only, the equipment we had to use was wheelbarrows and hand tools. Working from sun up to sun down, was not uncommon. It really tests your physical limitations. Just keep telling yourselves, the end goal is nice, but you need to breathe your way through every step. Take in the experience, rather than tell yourselves it will never end. As hard as this ordeal is, once it's done, it's amazing how quickly the gruelling days are forgotten. And what you will have to remember, is the experience. You'll remember the joke about needing more rocks, and the aches and pains will be faded. Great work guys.

Hey guys, I hear ya. I live on a 45 ha hilly block that is my life long conservation project. Absolutely everything takes longer and more effort than I thought it would. This is the nature of life - pure living for life.
Keep at it, good things take time.
