The history of the "journey" of Attica water is old and more than interesting. In order to be able to enjoy this good today in its best and most quality version, it was first necessary to carry out a great project in the early 20th century: The reason for the construction of the artificial lake and the Marathon Dam.
In 1925 with the increase of the population of Athens, mainly after the Asia Minor disaster, new needs were created. Thus, the construction of the first modern water supply projects in the area of the Capital began, with the signing of the contract between the Greek State, the American Company Ulen and the Bank of Athens and this was the first step to "quench" Attica. At that time, the Hellenic Water Company was created with the main responsibility of supervising the projects.
The thousands of refugees who arrived in the capital were thirsty and the water supply of the time was problematic. It is only worth noting that in 1921 the inhabitants of Athens, Piraeus and suburbs were about 450,000 - and only 9.5% of the buildings were supplied with water while in 1928, this number "reached" 800,000!
The first major project was the construction of the artificial lake of Marathon, which was created at a distance of 30 kilometers northeast of Athens. For its creation, a 285-meter-high stone dam was built, made of Pentelic marble, a fact that is a peculiarity, which makes it unique in the world.
The dam is 54 m high, 285 m long, 4.5 m wide at the top and 28 m at the base, and was completely lined with Pentelic marble. The artificial lake holds 41 million cubic meters, has a greater depth of 54 meters and an area of about 2.5 sq.km.
It took three years (1926-1929) to build the Marathon Dam which created the artificial lake of the same name at the confluence of the Haradros and Barnabas torrents.
The number of people who worked on the construction of the dam and the lake is also impressive. The construction of the arched dam employed almost 2,000 people who had been provided with free housing and food. The means of the time did not allow the workers to return daily to their homes in Athens and so they remained in the area of Marathon, until the completion of the project.
Shortly before the completion of the dam, an ancient Greek monument was erected at its base. The existing temple is a copy of the temple built by the Athenians in Delphi after their victory in the Battle of Marathon and symbolizes the victory of modern Athenians in the battle of water scarcity.
The inauguration of the dam and the lake of Marathon took place on October 25, 1929, with a big ceremony with important guests, among whom were the President of the Republic Pavlos Kountouriotis, the Prime Minister El. Venizelos, MPs, senators, professors of the Polytechnic, senior officials of the Ministry of Transport and of course the senior staff of Ulen and the Hellenic Water Company. The atmosphere was triumphant, as a major project of international importance was completed, but also because the role of Greek engineers in its capture and supervision was crucial.
To complete the project, a 13.4 km long tunnel was constructed through which water would be transported from Marathon to Athens. This tunnel is known as the Bogiati tunnel and ended in the current area of Agios Stefanos and Anixi. About 450 people worked to open the tunnel. On March 30, 1930, three years and seven months after the start, the two ends of the tunnel met. The work was completed on February 9, 1931 and is one of the most important works of the Ulen company. In fact, the company itself described it as "the largest hydraulic tunnel in Europe".
For 30 years Athens took water from the lake of Marathon until the water supply was made from the also artificial lake Yliki.
Even today, the Marathon Reservoir functions as an auxiliary source of water intake in case of emergency. It is supplied by the reservoirs of Yliki and Mornos through the Ylikis Aqueduct and the Mornos - Ylikis Union Aqueduct.
