- Charilaos Trikoupis | The longest bridge in Greece is celebrating 20 years since its construction
It all started on March 29, 1889 when the then Prime Minister of the country Charilaos Trikoupis spoke to the Greek Parliament, focusing on the need to bridge the Rio-Antirio Strait. The vision of Charilaos Trikoupis for bridging the approximately three kilometers that separate Rio from Antirrio was realized in 2004, when the longest bridge in Greece was put into operation, improving the daily life of citizens and uniting the Peloponnese with Central Greece.
On May 25, 2007, in a special ceremony, the then president of the Republic, Karolos Papoulias, named the said bridge in honor of its visionary the Charilaos Trikoupis Bridge.
In the 20 years of operation of the longest bridge in Greece, a total of 77 million vehicle crossings have taken place. Today, an average of 12,000 vehicles cross the bridge on a daily basis, of which 80%-85% are cars.
Before its construction, the crossing of the Corinthian Gulf was done by ships, a process that often inconvenienced the citizens, especially when the weather conditions were bad. The construction of the bridge radically changed the daily life of the residents of Western Greece and the Peloponnese, reducing travel time and boosting the development of the region.
The project started in October 1998 and was completed in August 2004 and the total cost of the construction of the bridge amounts to 630 million euros with financing from the Greek government, the consortium and loans from the European Investment Bank.
The inauguration of the Rio Antiriou - Charilaou Trikoupi bridge, the largest cable-stayed bridge in the world, took place on August 12, 2004, on the eve of the opening of the Olympic Games and seven months earlier than the contractual completion date of the works.
The Rio Antiriou - Harilaou Trikoupi bridge is distinguished by its high levels of strength, as it can withstand a collision with a tanker with a displacement of 180,000 tons, wind speeds of 265 km/h corresponding to a category 5 typhoon, but earthquakes greater than 7.4 on the scale Richter.
The bridge rests on 4 pillars, the maximum depth of the foundation reaches 65 meters below sea level with a total length of 2,252 meters, while together with the approaches it reaches 2,883 meters. The bridge deck is 27.2 meters wide with two lanes in each direction, a safety lane (LEA) and a cycle and pedestrian lane.
The maintenance of the bridge is anything but simple this year as well. The fact that it is located in a seismic area led to the selection of special constructions and innovative solutions for its stabilization and safety. A typical example is the two expansion joints that connect the main bridge (which is not supported by pillars, but is suspended by cables) with the two access bridges at Rio and Antirrio.
This year, after 20 years of operation of the bridge, the first of the joints in Antirrio underwent heavy maintenance and in 2025 the second joint (on the Rio side) will be maintained.
Extensive checks are carried out on the bridge every year by air and sea, with alpinists and divers in collaboration with specialized crews from Greece and abroad. Every bridge maintenance job is inherently a challenge. "The main issue is access either below deck or high on the pylons, or deep in the sea. Not only for people, but also for the transportation of necessary materials and the removal of materials to be disposed of.
The climbers completed their annual maintenance last week and the divers follow next week. "The divers will inspect the concrete on the piers of the bridge and carry out work where necessary in the so-called 'wetting zone', which extends from five meters below the sea level to 10 meters above it (about 425 m2 per pier) .It is an area that requires special attention due to the combination of chlorides (salt) and oxygen that create the greatest exposure to marine corrosion. Underwater and marine inspections are an important undertaking that is repeated every 4 years. They are part of an integrated strategy (design, construction, hardware performance monitoring and visual monitoring) to ensure the resilience of the infrastructure throughout its lifetime."

TOP FLIGHT MICHAEL 💪🎥🙋♂
