    The rhythm part of Cold Shot is a lot harder than it looks or sounds. You can be playing all the right notes and still not sound anything like Stevie. In this lesson I'll show you a techniques that add some fatness and some polish to the basic core rhythm.

    Thank God! Someone understands camera position in relation to guitar lessons.
    Seeing the neck this way is so great - and so obvious once you it - that I don't know why I've never seen it before. Awesome!!!

    I'm convinced that this technique came about when a very drunk guitar player was playing super sloppy...but still in the groove...and some (less) drunk guitar player saw him and thought, "dang...that's hot!"

    Teaching songs is an easy sell. If I taught songs, I'd have 10 times as many viewers, but I prefer to cater to those with a deeper interest :-)

    3:08 is just a couple frets off from being the opening bars of Kenny Wayne Shepherd's "Somehow, Somewhere, Someway". THANK YOU for these AWESOME free lessons! I realize that, years ago, it was your video that showed me how to pick "Pride and Joy" correctly, and now this video is showing me the little nuances I didn't understand and your "Honey Bee" intro video showed me how to play that intro... which is the reason I bought a guitar 20 years ago. But SRV was too hard so I gave up right away and learned lead playing with Johnny Lang's first album and rhythm by playing power chords with Rage Against The Machine and Queensryche. Thanks for what you do, man!

    I have been playing guitar for three and a bit years now. One of your earlier utube lessons got me going with the whole raking and muting technique. sometimes it's easy to forget how far you have gone with your playing. watching this has been a real lift as I realise that I can now tackle these sort of rhythm techniques with ease thanks to your lessons. Getting the technique down is so important. My advise to any new guitarist . Thanks Anthony.

    one thing that Stevie did on this song also is he would use his thumb to fret the 5th fret of the low E string to have that octave from the low E to the D string

    I've been taking lessons on guitar tricks and have been working on this song. The way they explained it makes it sound so much harder than just saying rake. They want you to isolate the top 3 strings on the down and the bottom 3 on the up. It sounds better the way you just showed it and less difficult.

    I measured Anthony's strat and mine in the vídeo,i put mine in the same angle and they have the same action. Good. I think its hard to do a decent raking with the strings in low action.

    • @Texasbluesalley
      @Texasbluesalley  9 месяцев назад +1

      Absolutely right. High action allows you a greater margin of error when depressing specific strings. The remaining strings rest higher off the fretboard and are easier to mute.

    • @Scorhos
      @Scorhos 9 месяцев назад

      @@Texasbluesalley you mean the e from g are easier to press or the E to d ?

    • @Texasbluesalley
      @Texasbluesalley  9 месяцев назад +1

      If your action is high, the distance between fretted and unfretted strings is greater. This means you can more easily rest your fingers on the unfretted strings and mute them. When your action is low, you have tiny margin for error, and even a slight touch on the string can cause it to touch the frets unintentionally, allowing the note to ring out instead of being muted.

    • @Scorhos
      @Scorhos 9 месяцев назад +1

      @@Texasbluesalley high action raises the pitch of the vibrato. I love It. And when we get used is softer than low action.

  • @jonvelde5730
    @jonvelde5730 4 года назад +1

    Well, this is real clear, and very well played, but... he's actually missing a note at the end of the rhythm pattern. It doesn't just end with that 2nd vibrato, there's actually a pull-off or maybe a slide down that gives you one more (admittedly understated) note right at the end.

  • @TheStefanGuitar

    Stevie, you explain so nicely how to use the Thumb but my hand is small and the Tumb will not cover the E string and mute the A string or neither the index finger can mute the A string while the Thumb is muting the E string. I always have this issue with SRV or Hendrix songs, both use the Tumb allot. Any ideas? Presently I only hit the 5 strings without to E to manage it. Thank you for all the good video lessons. !

    • @Draeneiwolf
      @Draeneiwolf 3 года назад

      i find if you play the whole riff with your middle, ring, and pinky fingers, an use your pointer to "bar mute" all the strings it works pretty well. Then when the the chords come around, you can just leave your pointer and bar the first chord with your pinky, and the second one you can rotate and use your thumb on the low strings and middle to bar and get the higher strings to ring out. I have pretty small hands so id imagine if it works for me it'll work for you. I hope that makes sense, there's other ways to do it you just gotta play around with it.

    All assuming of course that you can get your thumb that far over the top of the fret board and still reach the other notes with your fingers.

  • @reuben433
    @reuben433 3 года назад

    when you play the bar chord across the 7th and 5th frets are you strumming just those 4, or are strumming all 6 and muting the E and A string too? Its just my thin, flimsy fingers always mute the high E and B by accident when I try and mute the lowest 2 strings
