@taxation is theft memes news & more That's a very astute observation. Yes, pick in that general area. If you pick closer to the bridge, you're sound will be too bright.
Fantastic lesson Desi! Love how you break down every detail slowly with good camera angles but also explain the tuning and then get even more thorough with the exact pick up setting and effects combo. Most teachers on YT do not do this. Sounds totally on point! I just decided to learn this song and your video will be my guide!
I really enjoyed this video. You do a great job of explaining and are very clear and concise. I appreciate that you put a lot of time and effort into teaching at such a very elementary level. I'm picking up the guitar after not playing for over 30 years (I was a novice then and now) and this video really inspired me. I can't wait to start learning this into. Keep up the great work!!!
I’m from Texas, Dallas to be exact, and we’re all born with a six string and pistol, but I was looking for a better way to teach my 12 year old how to play cold shot, and I came across this marvelous lesson. I’m a decent player, but awful teacher, thanks for this lesson, he has this riff in his repertoire thanks to you!
Definitely hit it. I think the part I was missing was the open strings on the upstroke which for some reason is very hard for me to do and throws off the rhythm. I can mute the strng fine and play it that way so it still sounds good, but you definitely can hear those open strings in the recording. Very similar to the rhythm of the into to Pride and Joy, just easier.
@@desisernaguitar I noticed. Its very good for rhythmic learning. I can make Cold Shot sound fine if I keep everything muted and just rake the strings but technically that isn't correct. You can't get away with that in P&J as its really audible in the recordings and shuffle. Thanks!
I rest my right hand on the strings to mute them when needed in this song. All you need is a wrist motion to strike the strings instead of a flying arm. I always thought that was more a bit of showboating rather than a playing technique, similar to the circular picking motion he does on Pride and Joy. Just a suggestion if you have trouble muting with your thumb.
This is a good lesson and I agree with everything you've shown here but you left out one important aspect that I just discovered myself a while ago. Those on the beat A and G notes are played with left hand finger vibrato, especially the second A note in the riff. I don't know if Stevie did this live because he didn't always employ a Uni-vibe effect but you can clearly see and hear him do it in the 9/21/1985 Capitol theatre video. You can slow the video down to see it easier.
I am really intrigued with the way you are teaching this tune. Apart of the song per se you really show the correct way for muting and how to get this rhythm. Can I ask you provide the signal chain and which amps you are choosing in kemper...I use overloud Th-U and would dearly like to recreate something similar to your tone...i have just subscribed!
This video of mine where I show you how to dial in different types of tones using a guitar practice amp might help you out. ruclips.net/video/iZzz3AWam14/видео.html
Which Kemper profile did you use on this song? I just bought your 64 Verbrovibe + Steel String Dual Pack, but I cant find any profile in the pack that sounds like this, and no profile in this pack that have the rotary effect you used on Cold shot.
There should be a performance file in the pack. All the rigs in the performance have rotary added as an effect that you can enable. I think I used the rig in slot 2, Dirty Clean.
Hi Desi. Is it important to use the picks shoulders like SRV did in order to get close to the tone? Are you doing that here? Also, what kind of pick are you using? Thanks!
I think you are referring to how SRV held his pick. He held it upside down. I don’t do that. I don’t think it’s necessary. Other things contribute to his sound far more. I happen to be using a Gravity JHS logo'd pick polished. www.gravitypicks.com/products/jhs?variant=30421217968163
I don't think he ever used that guitar to record. He used it live temporarily, but stopped because he didn't like the sound. If you watch clips of him playing that guitar, it simply doesn't measure up to his Stratocasters. It looked cool though!
If you don't use the correct tuning it's not the correct way to play it. And you aren't annoying anyone in my book. That's the way SRV played it and you won't get it to sound how you want without it.
I debated about which tuning to use for this video. Since most of my students are in standard tuning almost all the time, I thought it would be less inconvenient to teach it in standard tuning and then let people tune down if they want to play along with the original recording.

And how i can do to add some vibrato like SRV does? I think its the hardest thing in this riff
@@pedrofoliattideazevedo6800 If you're referring to left-hand vibrato, there is none in this riff. The vibrato sound is created by the rotary effect.
@taxation is theft memes news & more That's a very astute observation. Yes, pick in that general area. If you pick closer to the bridge, you're sound will be too bright.
Probably the best demonstration and detailed explanation I have ever seen on this riff
I'm glad you liked it!
Great video lesson. I love SRV. Still miss him!
Me too!
Finally, someone who actually explains how to play like this. This is very helpful, and I really appreciate your time. I’ll be practicing this today!
You're welcome!
I've always wondered how to properly articulate that shuffling.... well done.
Man, you're a great teacher. Amazing lesson. Stevie has a ton of tricky songs to play!
Glad you think so!
very well explained!
Really good - love the explanation of the shuffle feel.

Wow, you have a great way of explaining this, helps alot. My son is learning this and I want to be able to play along...at least a little. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Finally a good explanation of what SRV did there - thanks a lot, I couldn't figure it out myself
!
Glad it helped!
Another clear and precise lesson Desi! Thank you so much. Your one of the best teachers ever.
Wow, thank you!
Extremely detailed tutorial,a natural teacher I think, thank you.

Awesome! This lick always confounded me. Thanks for a accurate detailed video
This is an excellent lesson Desi! Thank you!
Fantastic video. I also love your podcasts on Stitcher. All the best to you. Thanks.
Thanks for listening!
Sounds amazing
Thank you!
Superb instruction! And thanks for the rotary-speaker effect tip, which has eluded me forever!
Thanks Desi , your lessons are refreshing and easy to grasp...keep rockin' !!!
Glad you like them!
Brilliantly done! This is a timeless classic.
This was just excellent. Thanks so much for the detailed explanation on the techniques involved.
great job, thank you for not tuning down
You're welcome!
Well explained! I find that circle strumming it like he did helps me time the shuffle a bit more intuitively.
I like the way you break each part down. It makes it easier to learn. Great lesson.
Excellent lesson, very precise.. THANKS!
Glad it helped!
Excellent! I’m a huge SRV fan!!! Thank you for you very clear explanation! 👍🏻👌🏻
Glad it was helpful!
Well, I did not realize the nuanced sections, thanks for the remedial guitar session

Thanks so much Desi! Great stuff!

Great instruction!
Love this. It's a good lesson on muting and rhythm. Stevie had a good sense of that!
Excellent lesson

Thanks for the excellent lesson Desi!

I think so too!
Fascinating how simple it is, when it seemed so complicated when I listen to it.
Do you have any video on the leads?
No not at this time.

How the clean amp sounds so crispy? Mine sounds sou bassy

The thing about SRV groove is it is in between the triplet and 16th, so a more stilted shuffle than a triplet swing.

What pedal is supplying “rotary “ sound?
It is a rotary affect built-in to the Kemper.

As a side note Stevie didn’t write the song. He and double trouble were on FIRE when they recorded it.
SRV muted more notes than he let ring.
Excellent analysis and presentation

Rotary effect ….is that like a Leslie speaker
Yep
how about the lead playing?
Maybe that will be a future video. We'll see.
You missed the very first note on the 5th fret E string!!!!!
Leslie organ amp
To be clear he wrote and played that sound on his custom made Hamiltone guitar with name in it not his strat

I hate the rotary effect 🤮. Great video

Your playing this "too accurately" stevie did not play this accurately and this cover is not even accurate
Correct notes not correct tone. Get that flanger outta here
So you recreated all of the SRV tones but then didn’t tune it down a half step? I mean…why even bother? 🤷♂️
