  • This laptop isn't even one year old and the thermal paste is baked to a level I've only ever seen in 7+ year old machines. I was quite disappointed. The VRM cooling was a great thing to see, though. After this video, I took this laptop home and encoded this video on it. No crashes, no reboots, no black screen, all good!

Plot twist: the previous user heard that changing the thermal paste is good, got a crap one, then returned the laptop and Jody, with its renders, baked that thermal paste.
Also, even if the cooling is not horrible, it's not impossible that the previous owner used the laptop in a 40˚ Celsius room. Though if it's from August, the owner probably got it in September, and Jody being in the northern hemisphere, that means the laptop was not used in summer.... maan, complicated!
Nice to see a laptop not being thrown to waste, good job Jody!

In my experience, Asus uses crap thermal paste as a habit. Previous customer probably had overheating issues and returned it for that reason. "In Search of Incredible". I certainly hope they find it some day.

@@KratostheThird The issue isn't restricted to laptops. I've got an ASUS ROG tower, had the same issue.
(I know. Why buy an ASUS ROG tower? Well Best Buy credit wouldn't let me BYO easily, and it was worth it almost for the vid card alone at the time. (I hear you. Why are you shopping at Best Buy? Shut up.))

That could be a combination of 2 factors: crappy paste and crappy cooling(radiators and pipes were not enough to throw out all the heat so it did borderline overheating for a long period of time). Even if CPU can handle heat for long time(by throttling not to kill itself) thermal paste could bake faster than it should.

    • @JodyBruchon

I've confirmed it's insufficient cooling too. It rebooted a couple of hours into an encode. I disabled turbo frequencies and it didn't reboot.

In the Army, my drill sergeant was constantly screaming that my girlfriend was "spending time with Jody!" (edited for YT). None of us had ever met a guy named Jody before. Now I see Jody exists.

With the paper towels, have you ever used coffee filters? A friend of mine was helping me with an engine rebuild where it was important that particles didn't get on the parts when we oiled them. He said there was an expensive paper towel for this purpose, but he used coffee filters because they act like paper towels without the risk of releasing fibers.

    • @JodyBruchon
      @JodyBruchon  2 месяца назад +1

Never heard of using those. They're definitely more expensive than the paper towels though...

2015 and earlier laptops are more durable than newer ones that can last for more than 5 years (heck, I've upgraded a 2007 Core2Duo Laptop to SSD and it's still working today!). Still, lately, I've seen a few 2022 models die within a year... I'll wear a tin foil hat for this one, but I bet it's a planned obsolescence...

It’s all deliberate. Look at some appliances today and try to tell me with a straight face they will hold up as some of your 1980’s/1990’s appliances did.
They won’t. The products are just as expensive, but built with inferior materials. Manufacturers do this to make more money and have you going back to the stores.

You can drown it in IPA, it wont hurt anything, I use it all the time for removing old thermal paste, I also despise liquid metal, I recommend trying the new Graphene thermal sheets instead.

  • @stephenshelton4267

You mentioned that your thermal paste was expensive, but you only used a tiny amount. In the grand scheme of things what did Asus save by using that cheap paste over the good stuff? A penny? I wonder if the savings were greater than the warranty expenses of repairing devices.

    • @JodyBruchon

    • @JodyBruchon

It's actually not bad, it's just the paste that's the issue here. The VRM cooling makes me very happy. They didn't have it on the gaming laptop I bought from Asus in 2016.

@@JodyBruchon I bought one of mine in 2018. The problem is all Asus laptops of mine overheat. One also has a bad battery which is probably long overdue in being replaced.
Is there any website I can go to to replace computer parts?

I recommend the Commodore 64 laptop (also known as the SX-64). You can program Cobal on it (for writing software that controls Cold War era ICBMs), and it can also run Pacman flawlessly.
