    I must say that I liked the honest way you presented yourself. It is appreciated to see on this platform (RUclips) real professionals giving their opinions based on their real experience. Just as you say, RUclips is full of "Influencers" who call themselves photographers, and it is a great help for us (people who are passionate about photography) to have people like you. Looking forward to seeing more of your content.

    Thanks for the Video. I moved from Fuji X100VI to Leica D-Lux 8. We got both cameras for me and my wife today. And WE are so happy. We are not pro fotographers. But now we can carry our camera with us every day. It is like putting on your shoe when leaving the house. Now we take the D-Lux and leave. Yes the quality is not like a fullframe. But more than sufficient for Insta etc. And it makes fun shooting pictures. Which is the most important feature for us. Thanks Dirk and Renate

      Hi Dirk and Renate 😀 ich nehme mal an Ihr sprecht Deutsch? 😀 Thank you very much for the comment. The only meaning of "pro photography" is that you make a living on it. When I didi not, I put in the same ambition, money (gear and software!), and passion and that is all. Do not belittle yourselves. 😀. In my workshops I often see great photography while now and then pros cannot really convince me. The DLux8 is a a very high level compact camera and as THAT we such see it. It offers amazing image quality and I have seen pros delivering stunning work with it because in the end it is the person behind the camera who makes the photo. Good Luck and I hope to see you here again. 😀

    Nice video. This resonates with me as a 59yr old who has been in photography since the 1980’s, starting with a Pentax K1000, then Nikons and the 1957 Hasselblad 500C my late dad proudly bought for me and which I still have. I loved my Nikon D850 but also had a Fuji XT-1 which was, and still is, amazing. A year ago I went for an XT-5 and a host of lenses and it’s devastating as a die-hard Fuji fan to be so desperately unhappy. It’s nothing like the XT-1. This surprised me as I have in depth Fuji experience and adore the brand. I keep telling myself it must all be me and not the equipment. This is why I was captured by your video and some of the comments. I agree with everything you mention and feel a lot of similarity. My late dad had a Leica and it’s always been a dream to own one and for some time I’ve been researching the new SL3 and now recently the is little beauty D-Lux8 for exactly the same reasons you talked about. It’s true the camera does not make you a better photographer but the tactile and experience of using the right camera brings out the best photographer in you. This I know for certain. I have never known of a good photographer who is indifferent to the equipment they use. That’s one of the essential areas of passion. Too many people want a camera to do all things and that’s not right.

    • @DAVCOHPHO
      @DAVCOHPHO  Месяц назад

      thank you very much for your kind message. I see a lot of similarities 😀 I have to admit, I never needed so much time to set up a camera like the X100VI and I even needed help from a die hard Fujifilm user who also struggled with some particular settings I wanted.

    I find myself in a similar space. I have purchased a Leica Q3 and just took it on a tour of Italy and Greece and adore it. It was purchased to replace my Nikon D800 system which has been the core of my professional career as a Travel/Fashion/Advertising Photographer. I also recently purchased the Hasselblad X2D because I wanted to get back to a simpler, more enjoyable practice of photography. I can't wait for the D-Lux 8 to arrive. In fact, Hugh Brownstone inspired me a lot to really do that since I never saw myself come across like Peter McKinnon or other flamboyant, funny people, this is simply not me. And I love monochrome, in fact, both the Leica and the FujiFilm X100VI inspire me to go way more monochrome. I will continue, I am still surprised to see so much support. I can't say I will have a regular rhythm like every week, I will post when I feel I got something to say. I will definitely, very soon, follow up on the Leica D-Lux8 controversy by so many spec-rattlers as I refuse to see more in them since this is all they come up with. Photography is so much more than specs, it is the experience, the experience of a lifetime. Every book I read, every song I heard, every life experience makes me the photographer I am today and besides, it is the only artistic, creative experience I have to express myself since, unfortunately, I cannot play any instrument. To get both the Panasonic S9 and the Fuji X100Vi, despite the beauty of the X100Vi, my preference goes to the S9. Even though it lacks a viewfinder and the screen is not just a tilt but rather on a swivel, I use the S9 with the 45mm f/2.8, and the images are stunning. I had the S5M2 and sold it, and God knows how much I criticized the S9 when it first came out, yet today, I can only say good things about it! I was also a Micro Four Thirds user; I had the GX7, GX8, GX9, G9, and the magnificent 42.5mm 1.2 Nocticron. But truly, the S9 with the 45mm f/2.8 is so compact and changes the game, even though I have great gear at home: Z8/Z6III with 50mm f/1.2, 85mm f/1.2, 135mm f/1.8 Plena, S1R with 50mm f/1.4 S Pro, 24-70mm/70-200mm S Pro f/2.8. But as I write these lines, my heart goes to the S9. Maybe the Leica Q3 will win me over (though it’s bigger and heavier), but the price is obviously not the same. I say it's worth trying!

    An excellent video and I look forward to listening to more of your opinions on RUclips. Similar to you, since the early 1980s I’ve moved from Minolta 35mm through a brief period of medium format with a Mamiya 7, then digital with an APS-C Nikon and then a m4/3 Olympus. I was very happy with the image quality and size of the Olympus but hated the control wheels and buttons. I confess to not going out every day to take pictures so I could never remember how I had set the camera up.
    Having a couple of near-miss accidents and coming into some money I decided life was too short not to get the sort of camera I’d always wanted - a Leica. I bought the Q2 for its traditional controls and because the size of the sensor meant I didn’t need to carry a lot of lenses but just crop instead. It’s a fantastic camera and I take many of my best pictures with it. Its fixed lens is very bulky though so I bought an M11 as well which is easier to carry and pack in a non camera bag. I really like the idea of the D-Lux 8 but would need to sell one of my cameras to afford it. Selling the Q2 makes most sense but I’m loathe to do so because it produces such fantastic images. The reality is that I’m such a mediocre photographer that it makes no difference to my pictures so it’s just about how enjoyable using the camera is. Do you enjoy using the D-Lux 8?

    • @DAVCOHPHO
      @DAVCOHPHO  Месяц назад +2

      Hello Ian (I gather this is your name from your user name) 😀 I could not agree more, Leica IS this one dream. I used various Leica cameras throughout my life and I still own an analog Leica R4. I would love to have the Q3 BUT the lens is so bulky and - of course - the price is another aspect having switched from Canon with many lenses to Fujifilm X100VI (spec-wise very close to Q2) and the new DLux8 replacing the 7. The M11 is not stabilized which is essential and besides, the price is even steeper. To answer your question, yes, I DO enjoy the 8 and even though sensor and lens have remained the same, there are many useful upgrades that make it TRULY Leica and make it even more use- and joyful to work with. 😀

    Regarding the lack of a sensor upgrade in the D-Lux 8, the issue isn’t about APSC, it’s about why they kept the same 5 year old sensor when sensor technology has moved on.
    It’s also disappointing that they (in 2024) didn’t upgrade the autofocus to phase detect which is more reliable in low light.
    Is there a problem in Leica? Are they unable to afford R&D? These are serious questions.

    • @DAVCOHPHO
      @DAVCOHPHO  Месяц назад +1

      I understand your argument but do not necessarily share it. Such an upgrade would have certainly made the camera bigger, more expensive, and - most important - taken away this "always-on" character. When I switched to mirrorless approx. 2015, I chose Sony a7s which was 12 mp and it was and is way "enough". Who really prints today and even IF, for a magazine spread still enough. I do not feel any need here and true, phase detect may have been nice but then, I never really struggled with the DLux AF.

    • @GodfreyMann
      @GodfreyMann Месяц назад +1

      @@DAVCOHPHO you misunderstand: new sensor technology isn’t about changing sensor size, it’s about *KEEPING* an MFT sensor, but using the lastest sensor technology to provide better quality pictures:
      e.g. with higher dynamic range, lower noise ratio, global sensor (i.e. zero rolling shutter), higher density (eg 40MP instead of 17MP, which will allow image cropping in post which effectively increases the zoom range at the long end).
      Also, when you say 12MP or 17MP is enough, bear in mind that’s only for your use-case. Other photographers have different use-cases and some may need longer focal lengths: by increasing the MP it would have made the D-Lux more versatile. For example, with a higher MP sensor it might be possible to make the lens equivalent to 100mm, which would make the D Lux 8 a useful travel & landscape camera. Right now its use-cases are a bit limited.
      That Leica releases a 2024 camera with 2019 sensor technology is worrying.

    I think everyone is conditioned to expect new "better" specs in each camera. Most don't realize that camera brands market the slightest technological advances as the new Must Have. I'm too young to remeber the analog time. But just reading up on certain several analog models that were built over decades gives you the impression on what cameras were once. Today, through the influence of digital components and people comparing everything to how new phones are launched all the time, there is a race to always put out something new. So I think the D Lux 8 goes that way. I like the honesty and not claiming to be this or that tiny sensor improvement better, that in the end nobody sees anyway.

    Hi David, congrats on the first video, I am also a similar vintage! Just a small point the sound is very crunchy on my headphones compared to other videos, you might want to look into that. Interesting video I’m looking to get the D-Lux 8 to replace my current every day camera the Ricoh griiix. I have a q3 and it’s just too big (and expensive) to throw in my work rucksack. Thanks for your views and good luck. Ken

      This is exactly the reason why I chose the Fujifilm X100VI as my new work tool since the Canon R5 - with time - became too heavy and anyway too expensive to throw around. I will take care of the sound, I know, and I am sorry, but since my job is photographer and not youtuber, I never needed such equipment. I actually never thought I would do that but all the noise around a really wonderful camera made me do that.

    Hi David, thank you for your insights - and welcome to RUclips! I have read a countless amount of articles to be able to make a choice between these two amazing cameras - I have had a Sony A7iii since it came out and loved it and captured wonderful moments with it. However, I realised lately that my priorities have shifted - I am more interested in capturing more moments and having more fun with the photography rather than be focused on specs and the more ‘technical side of photography’. I only was able to take the A7iii with me on holiday or occasionally on the weekend and both of these cameras allow me to very casually grab one of them before leaving the house! I am still undecided, and would appreciate your take on it. I like the Fuji filters and the 40mp but I also love the ease of the Leica Menus and Fotos app. What is the form factor difference between the two? Is one smaller than the other? Many thanks!

      @DAVCOHPHO  Месяц назад +1

      Hello Khaled 😀 Thank you for your comment. I totally understand where you are coming from. Yes, the Fujifilm menus are very historic in the sense that additional features had been packed on top of the first camera's menu without ever streamlining, simplifying the menu but you will find your way. Spec-wise, the FF X100VI is very close to Leica Q2 and I am not alone to say that (see "Three Blind Men and an Elephant) at A FRACTION of the price. Q3 is a very different story, still we talk about € 6.2k camera which is bigger and the lens is far more protruding but of course IQ is different, too.

      At 74 I can certainly appreciate the benefit of light and compact. I’m looking for a camera that fits the EDC role and can’t seem to find what is right for me. Fuji… been there, had a bad experience and won’t go back. Leica - had the D-lux 4 years ago. The 8 is intriguing but I can’t get myself to pull the trigger. Technically (IMHO) the value for $ isn’t there unless, of course, you connect on a more subjective level. That’s something I’ve yet to get my head around.

      @DAVCOHPHO  Месяц назад

      Hi Elliot 😀 I would love to have the Q3 but ... you know ... I thought so too, and as I mentioned in this video (and will go into more detail in one of my next videos) I intended the X100 to be that. At the same time, I still had my DLux7 which I loved to use beside my Canon R5, so I was wondering what to do. Now, after some soul searching I realized I rarely used the R5 outside of shootings and even then, a 2hr. shooting really strained my hand and because everything was bulky I also saw how much more of my "other" photography was done on my DLux. I realized the X100 can easily replace my R5 and this is when I decided to sell Canon, move up the X100 and replace the DLux7 with the 8. now, everything is so much lighter, easier, and clearer. Besides, somehow it is like coming home because I started photography on and with my father's Leica M§ and Leicaflex. 😀

I don’t regret buying the Fuji over the Q3… but it would have been nice to own a Leica once more (previously owned the D-Lux 5 and an M9).
      Although the X100VI was also sold out or back ordered to the hilt, I got very lucky when I asked what the waiting list was for the fuji… the reply was ‘we have one here, would you like it?’
      Instantly replied ’yes!’

    Are the pics from the Leica at the zoom range and with 17mp good enough to print 22x17 prints?

    No David. Other YT users are not 'influencers', but people with a difference of opinion to you. I'm roughly the same age (pushing 60) and have been like millions of others, taking pictures ever since picking up my parent's cameras. But owning a Leica won't make you a better photographer. And if you really are the 'pro' you claim to be, then you should also know that to be true. Lastly, one rule of RUclips, because this is social media don't expect to then experience a comfortable rise in followers after you've just falsely accused them of being who they are not.

      I think I understand David’s perspective and if I’m right I think he’s making a valid point.
      The majority of videos you’ll see on RUclips are reviews by people who aren’t interested in using the D-Lux 8 themselves. Their goal is to review it for clicks and next month they’ll move on and review another product. In this sense, he’s right most of the D-Lux 8 videos are made by influencers.
      David’s different: he’s not setup his channel to be a product influencer.
      He already told us that he’s sold off all his gear and he’s basically switched to Fuji and Leica…but not a fancy ultra expensive Leica M or Q3…just a modest D-Lux 8. Given he’s a pro photographer this is a major endorsement for both cameras.

      @@GodfreyMann valid point or not, I too made a valid point, only to have my head torn off in third person, just because I argued for what you get in terms of m43 is imo, overpriced. I've owned 3 Leica M cameras, one of which was an M6. I think I was qualified enough to make that argument.
      David's reply was ignorant and rude. This is what David wrote under my comment on another thread. He owes me an apology. "another "expert" stuttering about specs without any experience with the previous or the current model. your agenda and ideology is all too obvious and therefore your verbal excrement irrelevant."
      'Verbal excrement'? Seriously??
