    Thank you. As a casual photographer for whom Leicas have always been out of reach, I am very intrigued by the D-LUX 8, and have absorbed much of the online analysis. The concerns raised in the MacFilos post casued me to look instead at the D-LUX 7 and Typ 109, but I did not enjoy where the cold logic of missing zoom functions was leading me. However your answer provided the simple observation that had escaped me: those functions are a Panasonic thing, not a Leica thing. Every brand has its own signature, which may include different functions and priorities. To me, a design philosophy which elevates the photography experience above a clutter of handy tricks and shortcuts, is more important than megapixels and burst rates. Thank you for reminding me of that.

      The zoom issue isn't sn issue as far as I and probably a lot of people. If fact I would still go out and buy the LX100 even though it lacks the Oled viewfinder if the D-lux 8, and the difference in price would allow for a spot of travel, or the purchase of a few 7artisans lenses or a Lumix 15mm f1.7 Summilux for my Lumix M43 bodies

    It's so nice to listen to David. He has so much knowledge of the cameras and the history. I watched a video the other day, by some youngster RUclips influencer telling me all about how Panasonic has HELPED LEICA design all their modern lenses, including the lens on the D-Lux 8 and the lens on the Q3! Panasonic helped Leica design a lens?? How ignorant can you be? So it's refreshing to hear our leaders of the photographic world who actually know the the history of photography talk about the new gear as it is released. And talk about it in context of what has come before.

    I am on the waitlist and can’t wait to have this camera. It checks every box for my needs. I have read so many people how disappointed they are and the fact that not much has change. However, there is something to say about not changing something that just works. Leica have updated what they needed to and left things alone that did not need changing.

    We have now achieved a culture that only looks for defects in new products. In some cases, we look for supposed errors based on personal preferences. In addition, the usual reviews only contain a list of all the specs that I can read anyway, which basically makes them obsolete.

    • @DAVCOHGRAPH
      @DAVCOHGRAPH  6 месяцев назад +2

      I could not agree more and this is why I took that "controversy" (what a bs) as a starting point for my youtube channel. This "culture" is at the core of our society's and in the end of our planetary situation. Refinement is not seen as an upgrade, "killer updates" are expected and if they "fail" to materialize that device is written down. I have always loved Leica but at this moment in time I "cannot" afford a Q3 (my dream camera) in the sense that such an investment will not improve the quality of my photography as much and I will therefore wait. In the end, as you do not ask a chef which knives, spoons, and pots/pans sHe uses it is the photo that makes the difference. But then, we are humans and we love beautiful things.
      Thank you very much for your comment and I hope to "see" (read) you more often here. 😀

    I’ve decided for the Fuji X100 VI instead of the D-Lux 8, because:
    (a) the Fuji takes better shots at 35mm,
    (b) the Leica is basically an f/3.4-5.6 FF equivalent lens which means sacrificing shallow depth of field.
    (c) Fuji’s 40MP APS-C sensor can take 70mm FF equivalent shots by cropping in post to give a 10MP image, which is still usable but only just. So all I’d be giving up is the Leica’s wide end, but that’s okay, because I can just stitch together panorama’s for wide-angled landscape/architecture shots.

    • @DAVCOHGRAPH
      @DAVCOHGRAPH  6 месяцев назад +2

      I said in my video I do not compare the X100VI because this is a different camera, a different level. The 8 is my everyday camera in case I see something, instead of a smartphone as many people do today. The FF is my main camera replacing the Canon R5.

      @@DAVCOHGRAPH I’m the kind of person who likes to solve problems (even when doing photography) and if I’m not mistaken you are completely the opposite. But, I hope that doesn’t mean we can’t have a ‘beer’ together. :-)
      I understand your use-case, because you keep repeating it, but what you don’t do is explain why the Leica is even necessary when you have the Fuji, which creates a puzzle that my brain just loves to solve…sorry, but that’s just me.
      Here’s my solution to the puzzle:
      Firstly, despite the fact that the Fuji has workarounds that can surmount its lack of zoom e.g. by cropping or stitching images, I’m guessing that you think such workarounds would get in the way of your creative process as a photographer. I think you just want to be in the moment and such workarounds considerations would be a distraction.
      Secondly, you know enough about photography to realise that short-depth of field is a lazy man’s way of subject isolation to tell a story…a good photographer can tell the same or even a better story with better choice of subject, better composition, and perfect timing. So I’m guessing that you’ve calculated that you don’t won’t need short depth of field.
      Thirdly, I’m guessing that for you, the Leica body/lens/button/menu design AND its small size simply fits your hands and brain like a glove…it feels great and this somehow translates into your enjoyment when using it as your EDC.
      Fourthly, I think you really value the wide 24mm for street photography (for which the Fuji has no workaround).
      Lastly, I think you secretly wish that it had a larger sensor with more megapixels in the same small body because then it would be your perfect camera for work and EDC, but you’ve rationalised that it would make the camera bigger, you know it’s not an option so you remain content.
      So how did I do? Have I solved the problem correctly…is this why you use the Leica as your EDC and Fuji for work?
      If I did okay, then I can guess why you’re using the Fuji instead of Leica Q3 (which on paper should be your perfect camera). Is it because it’s simply too big and heavy? If that’s your reason for not using the Q3, then I guessing that your creative process requires you to be fast, nimble and discrete? Which means you’re a proper old-school street photographer.

    • @DAVCOHGRAPH
      @DAVCOHGRAPH  6 месяцев назад +1

      @@GodfreyMann Hello Godfrey 😀 Quite to the contrary, if and whenever possible, I would love to have a beer together. 😀
      I AM all about solving problems which is why I switched the way I switched.
      First of all, thanks so much for this very thoughtful, excellent, and detailed analysis. You have a lot of valid points but my work is boudoir photography, indoor, natural light, and closer distances. I increasingly need "lighter" cameras and since I really thought about Leica's Q line, I went for the FFX100VI because - spec-wise - it is extremely close to the Q2 (at a fraction of the price) and ticks all my boxes.
      A closer analysis of my photos showed most of my photography is happening in this "range", pun intended. So, the CR5 weight and the bulk of all the lenses PLUS the fact that we (my wife is a model and started photography, too) travel a lot, made a switch even more necessary and vital. I lost a lot of money but better sooner than later since I saw the R5 II already on the horizon.
      The FFX100VI has so many useful updates, IBIS, 40MP sensor which ticks all my boxes PLUS a very classic AND minimalistic design concept very akin to Leica's.
      You ARE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT, Leica's Q concept, also the design and minimalism is EXTREMELY appealing and I am sure, some time in the not too distant future I will switch to Leica Q3 or the successor model - even though ... the lens size ...
      The LDL8 is my EDC because I AM a passionate photographer and as much as I love my job, my photography is not limited to this area. The 8 is superior to any smartphone, small enough to be always with me and now, finally, in body, design, and handling a true Leica.
      I enjoy our discussion very much and if you want to, we can also facetime, or talk on google chat to avoid the time lag here.
      Thanks so much again and take care 😀

    I think the D-Lux 8 is going to be my next camera. I used to own the Panasonic LX100 and then the MkII and those cameras were by far my most used. I loved just about everything about those cameras and the D-Lux 8 is a continuation on the Lumix. It's more Leica now but still has a fair amount of Panasonic inside it which is a good thing. It looks like Panasonic are not going to release a new verson of the LX100 camera so I'm saving up for the Leica. I have always wanted a Leica Q3 or M camera so this will be my entry into the world of Leica. Can't wait!!!

    A brilliant video about this camera. On my last long-distance trip I decided to buy a compact camera that I could take with me even when I dont't want to carry my camera backpack the whole time. I have the X100V. But this camera is too big for this purpose. It also has no zoom. Otherwise there is nothing else on the market that would fit from my point of view. I like the overall package of the D-Lux. It seems ideal for my purpose and the price is okay for what is offered. The only alternative might be the potential successor to the Sony RX100 VII. But this is pure speculation at the moment.

    One of my all time favourite compacts for street & B&W, is the D-Lux 4 which I still use a lot to this day. A game changer for me on the newer models would be the inclusion of a flip out screen. I find that one feature so useful for shooting more discreetly with some of my other cameras. As for dorks who say it should have phase detect, 40 MP, blah, blah, blah - even my old model 4 is light years ahead of what renowned photographers were shooting with back in the day 😊

    Had the Q2 monochrome, the Q3. Both quite big for what they are and with only 28mm too limiting for me. The GR3X nice but boring. Sony RX100 VII is somewhere in a drawer... This one looks interesting, I just wished they would have put a tillable screen in it and some good IBIS. Body grew a bit compared to the 7, so there might have been some space :) and yes regarding comparisons... one can always find something against it or for it. I've had a D-Lux 7 and used it for about a month. I liked the colors but didn't love the experience. To me, the redeeming factor is the Summilux lens. Coming from a bunch of Fuji cameras (XPro2, XE4, XT3, XT2) and lenses, I much prefer Fuji. I currently have an X100T and I am very thankful that I traded my Dlux7 with it. The image quality I get from the X100T is cleaner and sharper, in my opinion. Plus I'm a 35mm guy. I've gotten used to having a prime lens. I'm not sure about the Dlux8, since they've improved a lot of things except the size of the sensor and resolution. Now, Leica Q is a different beast altogether. I'm super impressed by its IQ and handling. If I am to purchase another Leica soon, it will be one of the Q models.

      There is no way one would compare the DLux8 to a Q3??? As I said in this video, the X100VI is a different camera and therefore I do not see it as a competitor and I do not use it that way. I own D-Lux5 for more than 10 years and I still like it just because it is compact and the room also picture frame size are adjustable, which is quite convenient for street shot so for this reason it is better than the fix room camera like Leica Q. I am interested to buy D-Lux8 since the operation interface is more convienet than last generation, in spite of some criticism about the hardware is old.

    Perhaps I am missing something but reviewers of the D-Lux 8 tend to gravitate around it being an everyday carry camera and harp on specs. Very little, if anything, is mentioned about its real-life picture quality and usability in various lighting and other conditions. I own a Leica Q and even if it is two leagues above in terms of optical qualities, some comparison would be helpful in order to properly rank it against the competition. Same applies to pitching it against the Sony RX100 and similar. Thanks nonetheless!

    • @DAVCOHGRAPH

      I do not have access to Sony RX100 and different from many others here, my job is photographer and not reviewer. I will post photos shot with the DLux7 and 8 but at the same time, what I am doing here is more about setting the record straight. Please bear with me and you will get to see samples of my Leica and Fuji X100VI photos.

    Hi David, thank you for your thoughts on the Leica D-Lux 8, I have not used a compact camera at all, would there be any problems in your opinion with dust being drawn in on to the sensor with a zoom lens such as this, pehaps like the problems I have heard about the GR cameras. I know it could be dealt with easily enough by send it off for cleaning, but I was just wondering if it could be a problem. I have the Lumix GX9 and would certainly upgrade to the Leica D-Lux 8 if I though the image quality was better or much improved on the Leica, even though it has no IBIS I belive? I love to shoot in monochrome so would certainly upgrade to the Leica if better then my GX9. Thank you for you opinion, David

      Hello John 😀 I already used the 7 and newer had such problems but then, I really take good care of my equipment and rather keep it inside than risk something. Have you see this cameradecision.com/compare/Leica-D-Lux-8-vs-Panasonic-Lumix-DC-GX9? Leica is stabilized which is why I bought it. I will not and cannot use unstabilized cameras (anymore). Funny, with both Leica DLux models I sho(o) a lot more bw than ever before, same with my Fujifilm X100VI. I am sure the Leica DLux8 will be a significant upgrade.

    Ah too bad… the missing step-zoom is probably a deal-breaker for me ! I think a lot in terms of classic focals.
    And a lever instead of a ring uses more battery.

I truly believe we should return to the fact " ... As for dorks who say it should have phase detect, 40 MP, blah, blah, blah - even my old model 4 is light years ahead of what renowned photographers were shooting with back in the day ..." - see above.

      @@DAVCOHGRAPH Which is why the features of the physical camera and its software are so significant. This camera is capable of recording superb images, albeit with less dynamic range than a full frame camera. It is its size and features that set it apart, not generally its relative picture quality, which is superb and even better in skilled hands and utilising its feature list.

    Just giving sincere feedback on the quality and I have one quality issue! ....
    The sound quality to my ears is bad, thin, tinny, boxy, hissy highs.
    Other you tuber videos that I've watched that use Rhode or DJI mics sound great.

I currently use the Ulanzi mic detailed under my first video and since my job is photography and not youtuber, I never saw the need to get anything like that. @@hedydd2 I have to laugh at Leica removing it especially since they are mostly a fixed lens orientated ecosystem. I mean when pre-visualizing a scene you can pop into the focal length you want and be there as you bring your viewfinder up to your eye. Futzing with a slow zoom after you have the viewfinder to you eye is a sluggish method. Experienced photographers would agree ;) LOL

    Everyday camera should be in every condition of the day and this camera is not that. This camera may be good on clear sunny days, but no dusty, no fogy, no rainy days and no higher ISO than 1600. It is a point&shoot camera with motorized zoom and will suck dust in the sensor at no time. How do you clean the sensor on a fixed-zoom lens camera? I guess you listen too much on paid gear reviewers, like 3 men and elephants guy. (Him)"Hold your thoughts"! Whatever he reviews are Excellent or Amazing and all of the YT reviewers do the same. I love the zoom lock and step zooming feature that can be [and is, in my case] set to default to the last used setting when the camera is switched on. I have a D-Lux7 and a Q2 but I have no brand loyalty and use many camera brands. That Leica makes such an excuse for deleting great features that were included on previous models is sad and just because some people do not use the features is no reason to deprive those that do from using it on new models. I don’t care that the D-Lux7 has a more Panasonic style menu system. I am far more concerned that so many features that I currently do use are not available on the 8 and I will not buy that model just for its brand name and simplified menu more suitable for simpletons.

    • @DAVCOHGRAPH
      @DAVCOHGRAPH  5 месяцев назад

      Obviously, people did not use/need it enough for Leica to keep it and as YOU don't care about the actual upgrades, others, me included do and were reason enough, to IMMEDIATELY sell the DL7. Funny, how you attack/hate preach against Leica for implementing their menu also on the DL(.
