Here's a fun game: Look at Greg Land's artwork and speculate on what wacky erotic scenarios are being depicted in the source material. Your imagination is the limit!
You know what else is terrible from using tracing? Inconsistent shading and perspective. Basically, it means that each characters doesn't have the same light source (made even worse if flipped or rotated) and that they never really appear to be drawn in the same ground at the same angle, resulting in messy artwork where the characters basically looks like a collage from magazines and no solid notion of space.
Hey can we all bump up this very good post? This is a very strong reason why that shitstain boy Land really won't be able to get away with traced thievery forever. Just wait, and then relish in the schadenfreude. Comic industry success can't be faked, no matter what! B)
His panels do look like those collages from random magazine pictures we used to glue together in school. Nothing fits together and the characters don't "interact" with each other at all. It just looks odd because the human brain can't process visuals that cannot occur naturally into something that "flows". It's impossible to have five different light sources in one group shot that only affect one person in the shot respectively. Light doesn't work that way! And yeah... that image of the female character in the fight scene Linkara points out? That's traced from a picture of a porn star getting banged from behind while she's standing on her right leg and her partner is holding up her left leg. Greg Land, everybody! Why trace in-action pictures of female MMA fighters or wrestlers for your fight scenes when you can use porn instead. He should be called "One Hand" Land from now on.

At least Frank Miller does his own art. It wouldn't be so bad if he was taking these images he was tracing from, but no, he just takes any random porno mag and calls it a day.
I did the mathematics, apparently each probe costs five thousand, two hundred thirty-eight and nine thousand, five hundred twenty-four hundred-thousandths dollars each
I think you should give Secret Wars (2015) a shot, because it was a really good event a great finale to Jhonathan Jickman's Fantastic Four/Avengers Run, but in order to read it there's quite a lot of backstory to read (Mostly jus Avengers and New Avengers) so because of that you might never do it, anyway good video like always, even in 2017
From what I understand, the original Stracynzski stories were pretty good, and they had an interesting angle: kind of a "Reverse-Watchmen." It started with the characters being complete jerks, and then softened them, having them grow and become better people. Then, this comic came out and erased all that hard work and good will. Nice going.
Hey, Linkara. You mentioned reading Miss Marvel for fun. Ever pick up Hawkeye. From what I can tell it was (mostly) a well-written series. Especially issues 11 and 19; I think they might be worth an Atop the Fourth Wall Episode because they try to experiment with new methods of story telling.
I recently read the original Nightwing mini-series which was penciled by Greg Land, it appears it was before he traced but its so hard to get through because it's very lifield inspired. I'm curious what you mean when you said he did good artwork once.

Wait a second... Lands could keep his art even MORE consistent with tracing! All he has to do is choose a specific person to trace for each character! Because, in real life, people actually LOOK CONSISTENT, then his art should, as well! If the problem is he can't find a picture of, say, Matt Smith (just a random example) with a smiling face standing in a certain spot at a certain angle, then all he has to do is create a composite from multiple images where the specific PARTS are angled correctly! How hard is that?! I'm only taking Linkara's word for it, since I do a actually have some comic issues with Lands as the artist and I always thought everything looked fine.
Thinking about all the people who must get passed over in favor of this thief is pretty depressing, so to off-set it, let me discuss two very talent artists who do get the fame and work they deserve and who KNOW HOW TO USE PHOTOS! Alex Ross hires models and has professionals photograph them (in full costume and makeup) to use as REFERENCES. Hirohiko Araki uses modern fashion magazines and classical sculpture for INSPIRATION in his own work (in case any of you were ever wondering why the cast of Jojo are constantly contorting themselves into bizarre poses). Both know how to use these resources properly and show genuine love and passion in what they do. Ross' artwork is almost photo-realistic (he's basically my favorite artist and writer) which fits with his very human portrayals of superheroes in his own stories. Araki's characters may strike the most random poses and wear ostentatious outfits, but it fits with the hyper-stylized world they live in. Land has technical talent (I know I can't do what he does), but so does Rob Liefeld! Either way, the artist isn't willing to put real effort into their work, so why do they keep getting hired?
@thegreatunnamedone you almost answered your own question. Joe Quesada discusses Land’s work: “What’s happened with Greg is that it’s become a witch hunt and way too many people are having way too good a time hurting a tremendous artist’s reputation when he isn’t doing anything that is any different than any of us. Every line he draws now comes under scrutiny and in so many cases, people are “seeing” things where are none.” Quesada also goes on to state: “I could go on and on about how many times Greg has bailed us out from some very bad deadline crunches." ...Yeah he's very fast and cheap to work with. Quantity not Quality.
While tracing is bad...sometimes, i personally think that there are at least three things that can excuse tracing: 1. The comic/art is free. It doesn't matter if it's traced or if it's terrible, it's free. 2. It's only for the cover. Because it is a common practice to trace famous covers. (Example: crisis on infinite earths's "superman hold the dead body of supergirl" and amazing fantasy no. 15.) 3. It's a movie adaption. The whole point is to make the comic just like the movie. So it would make sense to trace the scenes from the movie for the adaption. Grag land......doesn't do any of these three things!
On the plus side, LIAN'S BACK. YAY :D. Actually and here comes to crucifixions, I'm surprised a lot of people haven't paid Linkara a lot on Patreon to review the bad MLP comics, the one most fans seem to infamously complain about is the Nightmarity Arc, which I found decent but yet the fandom hated. Then again everyone hated the 'Reflections" arc and the Sombra comic, which apparently *_surpasses_* the hate of Nightmarity arc.
Wait- how many parallel reeds would be sending out the exact same number of probes to the exact same spot? Sounds like a massive dimensional clustrfck.
Why would Johnny object that his action figure has too many points of articulation?? Wouldn't that guarantee that the toys would sell an be a big hit?? I mean I collect action figures so ya get where I'm coming from right???
Tracing over photos is fine in moderation, when you're learning to draw and you need help building muscle memory when working or figuring out how to break things down into basic shapes, but dear god dont trace over another person's art or trace over photos or videos for paid work!
Wait, you would think if Land is just tracing pictures of real people they would at least be standing and posing in realistic poses that can really be done with the human body.
There's only one reason I can think of as to why a talented artist would be lazy and trace: time. He's trying to meet his deadlines. Does it justify it? No! But it's literally the only thing I can think of as to why he would resort to it.
While Secret Wars itself might have been meh .....I have to give it props for giving us some truly awesome minis....and NOT just about the usual suspects...Beyond the Spidey and X-men we also got books focusing on Elsa Bloodstone and zombies. MODOK actually living up to his name, Shiklah the bride of Deadpool, Ghosr Riders in Death Race and so much more
Linkara's additional end credit note: I'm just disappointed that we never got Ultimate ROM: Spaceknight. Don't be disappointed Lewis, be relieved. Part of the reason I never got into the Ultimate Universe is because almost everyone there is a dick.
I sometimes wonder what it was that prompted both Sony and Fox to decide to use the ultimate universe for their reboots. Not that Ultimate Spiderman and FF are bad. Just find it weird/curious that they both decided to use the same alternate universe for their reboots.
Supreme Power was legit an excellent remake of Squadron Supreme that blew up so badly. Legit had the writer just lose interest mid fight and put the series in limbo for years only to comeback with an awful soft reboot. At least we got like 3 years of enjoyable issues out of it before I had to wipe it from my mind completely.
3:40-4:40 To anyone that's curious, you're not missing anything. The mainstream marvel continuity carried on as usual after the event was over and was more of an excuse to bring Miles Morles into the Main Universe. Other than that, I really couldn't have cared less, and this is coming from someone who's more of a Marvel than DC guy. Speaking of not giving a damn, "Renew Your Vows" came out that same year and WOW, I felt cheated. Basically, everything Lewis said there might as well be as if it's coming from my mouth.
I just realized this comic is where they took the revised origin for The Fant4stic movie, and no I'm not spelling that wrong thats how the movie is titled.
+sephiroth Cross does that apply to his cross overs as well? I get not reading any of his main series as it's just not the character he wants but not reading the crossovers feels a bit petty.
Reallyrandomcircle Honestly from what I've read so far, that plot point seems to end as quickly as it randomly came in, so... I'm kinda willing to forget it even happened and enjoy the rest of the series?
the new Secret Wars sucked, too many titles and you have no idea what's going if you only read the main title. Renew Your Vows was the best Webhead story I've read in a long time. by the way Lew, can you review Spider-man Dead No More after the whole story is out? comes out in the Fall. they're bringing back multiple people. also, check out the Spider-man/Deadpool comic, it's pretty decent and the last issue ended with Mephisto talking to Spidey, so they may finally address the idiocy of One More Day
There were a couple good titles and the end was decent in my opinion. Actually I think spider island which came out same time was the better story in my opinion (and I did like renew your vows)
+The Nerd View Review I just didn't like it. just an excuse to start a bunch of new number ones again. Spider Island was okay, but not very memorable. Renew Your Vows felt more like a What If Never Made The Deal Mephisto story, if only it was canon

I don't know anything about the Ultimate universe, nor have I read any Fan. 4 comics ever in either universe soooo there's always a chance I'm wrong and/or they tried this already.
Also, the mouths wide open thing makes them look like they're all doing a high note as the brawl.
*Marvel Ultimate Power but every time a character opens their mouth, Big Enough plays*
8:59 And Sue _marries_ this asshole. I mean, I know Reed's a massive tool in this universe, but Ben isn't really coming off as any better, here.
Ironic considering how Kate Mara and Jamie Bell started dating after playing Susan Storm and Ben Grimm in the 2015 FF film, got married and had a daughter together.
So, are those women supposed to be the Ultimate Serpent Society?
id think so
Probably.
For trying to make things newer/more relevant, the Ultimate Universe inevitably raised more questions then it answered.
RedTailedSmeargle unfortunately we are never going to find out about these questions because the ultimate universe is now dead
Oh, god, I hope not
@Sparten 117 yup indeed
6:45 for the record, Doc Spectrum's power comes from the jewel embedded in his hand, hence the one-sided glow.
I made my own comment about the ultimate fantastic four comic, when they fought Namor, he jumped out of the ocean doing the same wide arm things as hyperion. I said, " He saw a fish 'this' big"
12:32 I think he’s trying to find a universe where Ben WAS cured, and use the same method.
“Seriously, why are you even doing superhero comics if you’re not going to embrace the insanity of them?”
Wait until you read the Ultimates issue where (SPOILERS) evil Ultimate Reed Richards is defeated by Ultimate Tony Stark’s talking brain tumour.
UNLIMITED POWER!!!!!!
I had to say it.
I was so glad when Lewis reviewed this comic, seeing how I have a Stan Lee autographed copy of it.
Why would anyone have asked Stan to autograph ....THIS? If I had the choice between signing this and a used napkin..I would have had a usen Stan Le napkin lol
24:40 Haha, okay. That looks exactly like the pro wrestler Triple H. In fact, if you google 'Triple H pose' you'll find countless pictures like that.
At least Frank Miller does his own art. It wouldn't be so bad if he was taking these images he was tracing from, but no, he just takes any random porno mag and calls it a day.
It's really bad when modern frank miller can be complimented
I did the mathematics, apparently each probe costs five thousand, two hundred thirty-eight and nine thousand, five hundred twenty-four hundred-thousandths dollars each
$5238.95, then.
TheSefirosu200x Pretty much
You've just roasted every artist's worst fear: Tracing
Sue Storm: What is wrong with you guys?
The Thing: We're written by a guy who uses porn for inspiration. What do you think?
I think you should give Secret Wars (2015) a shot, because it was a really good event a great finale to Jhonathan Jickman's Fantastic Four/Avengers Run, but in order to read it there's quite a lot of backstory to read (Mostly jus Avengers and New Avengers) so because of that you might never do it, anyway good video like always, even in 2017
17:48 So it's basically Ultimate Youngblood?
EDIT 18:45 Yep. Definitely Ultimate Youngblood.
Jonathan Brown well it is bad enough for that name to make sense.
From what I understand, the original Stracynzski stories were pretty good, and they had an interesting angle: kind of a "Reverse-Watchmen." It started with the characters being complete jerks, and then softened them, having them grow and become better people. Then, this comic came out and erased all that hard work and good will. Nice going.
This is why I don't let Reed touch my car
Yayy! The 350th episode! !!!!...though you're actually more than 400 episodes technically so congrats on that.
Eamonn Deane Interesting, I'll check that out.
this is still my favorite channels and I celebrated this video
How is Land so bad at anatomy if all he does is trace things? It's like double incompetence...
I would recommend checking out renew your vows. It's the best Spider-Man book that Marvel is currently printing.
He might have checked it at some point, and it confirmed his suspicions that Marvel is still not dealing the OMD problem.
@@alexandredesbiens-brassard9109 The greatest Spider-Man villains are likely the snarling wolves of Sony (depending on their mood) and Joe Quesada (obviously).
If that's the standard of quality Spider-Man books have to look forward for, then truly Spidey is a dead and pathetic franchise.
not to sound like a dick but....I actually laughed when Ben called dibs....I am a horrible person
I nearly died at 21:18 and the "rocket-powered flatulence".
XD
With the source material I was expecting a explosive orgasm power lol
...the back of the trade he's holding says "A treat of strong writing and excellent artwork" and after just getting a glimpse of the ridiculous snake women I'd like to know how much whoever supplied that quote was paid for it.
Speaking of Galactus and the Ultimate universe, there was actually an event in the Ultimate universe called "Cataclysm" wherein Galactus - the main universe Galactus - crossed over into the Ultimate universe and attacked the Earth, forcing the heroes of the Ultimate universe to band together and attempt to fend him off.
Greg Land turned Reed Richards into Steve Jobs at @12:03
20:27 I literally bursted with laughter beacuse of that laziness
Every line he draws now comes under scrutiny and in so many cases, people are “seeing” things where are none.” Quesada also goes on to state: “I could go on and on about how many times Greg has bailed us out from some very bad deadline crunches."
...Yeah he's very fast and cheap to work with. Quantity not Quality.
"It really seems like he cares about his friends"
No one tell him
They did. -_-
@@AT4W this comic was the Major influence on Fant4stic, guess both of those sucked.
I don't know about this Greg Land.... But i know about Polnareff Land and that my friend is a magical place
You are the most entertaining person on RUclips I love the comics and the critiques
While tracing is bad...sometimes, i personally think that there are at least three things that can excuse tracing:
1. The comic/art is free. It doesn't matter if it's traced or if it's terrible, it's free.
2. It's only for the cover. Because it is a common practice to trace famous covers. (Example: crisis on infinite earths's "superman hold the dead body of supergirl" and amazing fantasy no. 15.)
+Eamonn Deane wait he HAS ALREADY?!
I haven't checked his site since Norton goes "IT HAS A VIRUS!!!"
Wait- how many parallel reeds would be sending out the exact same number of probes to the exact same spot? Sounds like a massive dimensional clustrfck.
Earth in every universe gets buried in infinite probes from infinite alternate Reed Richards
Why would Johnny object that his action figure has too many points of articulation?? Wouldn't that guarantee that the toys would sell an be a big hit??
I mean I collect action figures so ya get where I'm coming from right???
A big problem with greg lands tracing is that it makes action look stiff and boring.
Tracing over photos is fine in moderation, when you're learning to draw and you need help building muscle memory when working or figuring out how to break things down into basic shapes, but dear god dont trace over another person's art or trace over photos or videos for paid work!
Wait, you would think if Land is just tracing pictures of real people they would at least be standing and posing in realistic poses that can really be done with the human body.
i actually love the squadron supreme and they're one of my favorite teams
The repeating expressions crack me up. Who fights with their mouths wide open and eyes squinting like that?
Fun fact! Ultimate Doctor Doom is NOT Victor Von Doom... it is in fact Johnny and Sue Storm's MOTHER!
Ah Greg Land....it is surprising how long it took to get to his monstrosities.
I’m still amazed your show has been around so long. I think I’m gonna take my time to watch everything ✌️😊
21.9.22
Serpent-themed villainess: You'll die alone!
Me: Lady, lots of people die alone every day, what's your point?
From what I researched, Renew Your Vows takes place in a different universe(or Battleworld) and has no connection to the main universe. Kinda
It's more of some continuation of the late 1990s, and it still does not solve the OMD curse.
I'd love to see Squadron Supreme in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. They could make for some great antagonists, I bet.
MODOK actually living up to his name, Shiklah the bride of Deadpool, Ghosr Riders in Death Race and so much more
You like that ultimate reed richards because hes nice well youre not going to like what happens the maker.
Just find it weird/curious that they both decided to use the same alternate universe for their reboots.
shadowspider9 Well Sony did use the actual universe for their first set of movies.
The MCU did tgesame thing lol
"The Ultimate Universe is done for."
NOT ANYMORE, IT ISN'T!
@Trevor White It’s still there they showed it reset all the way it’s back to life we’re just not writing about it anymore
He’s now the artist for the new Hulk comic...yay........-_-
I just realized this comic is where they took the revised origin for The Fant4stic movie, and no I'm not spelling that wrong thats how the movie is titled.
Holy crap, I think that last panel of Hyperion was a trace of pro-wrestler, HHH's old entrance pose.
I cheered at 350. I also dry heaved when I heard Greg Land, that dude is such a hack god damn.
hey Linkara! thoughts on the deadpool/Spidey series poking old myphisto-y wounds?
he doesn't read Spiderman at all anymore.
Unless Marvel finally does something about the Satan deal or ya know, Joe Quesadilla is removed from Marvel, maybe.
+sephiroth Cross does that apply to his cross overs as well? I get not reading any of his main series as it's just not the character he wants but not reading the crossovers feels a bit petty.
+The Nerd View Review not sure how far the rabbit hole goes honestly.
Renew Your Vows was the best Webhead story I've read in a long time. by the way Lew, can you review Spider-man Dead No More after the whole story is out? comes out in the Fall. they're bringing back multiple people. also, check out the Spider-man/Deadpool comic, it's pretty decent and the last issue ended with Mephisto talking to Spidey, so they may finally address the idiocy of One More Day
He's not gonna read spiderman againg until the deal with Memphisto is fixed and not with a retcon
+Frselrey Garcia the Spidey/Deadpool crossover may be heading in that direction, so we shall see in the next few issues
+HeadBangerAust *What If Spiderman. freaking phone freezing sucks!
