It's interesting how Deadpool started out as an edgy 90's Deathstroke knock off, but eventually became a deconstruction of that very concept. Sure, he's a morally flexible killer for hire, but he also feels a lot of remorse and self-loathing over the pain he's caused and the lives he's ruined. Fun fact, the shapeshifter who mimics Domino in this issue is actually Vanessa Carlysle, Deadpool's girlfriend from the movies, known in the comics as Copycat.
@ULGROTHA I hope something happens to her. I know people really enjoy them as a couple but its so untrue to the comics. As Deadpool never has a relationship that works out they either always die or something happens that breaks them up. In the comics pretty sure she's killed by Sabretooth. Having him never having a happy life outside of the suit is what makes his character work. A lot of humor comes from how tragic his life is and how insane all of it has made him. Which is why I was disappointed when at the end of the film they just erased her death by having Deadpool go back in time and save her. I just want to get to a point where my favorite Deadpool romantic interest shows up which is Shiklah who rules the monster world. Just think it would be a fun and crazy world to throw him into for the films.

To be honest, I liked the stuff about Cable teaching the kid how to use his powers to be more stealthy as it shows he is a decent mentor when it comes to teaching the mutants on his team how to utilize their abilities. Also it had enough character bits that I could see someone wanting to read more about them or at least buy a few more issues to see how things play out. Sure Deadpool is basically a run of the mill villainous mercenary, it at least establishes his tendancy to talk too much (and Cable's line about it is just too true especially considering Deadpool's modern epitaph the Merc with A Mouth) so at least that is the one thing that has been with the character since his first appearance.
I've been a Deadpool fan since the early 2000s and I've always said that Fabian Nicieza was the REAL creator of Deadpool since he was the first to introduce the 4th wall breaking and gags in his appearances after New Mutants 98. One of the problems with Liefeld creating new characters is I think it was somewhat symptomatic of the 90s speculator boom when the first appearances of new comic book characters (which also tended to be #1 issues which were also seen as valuable) like issue #1 of Youngblood were seen as good investments in the hopes they would be worth money in the future. The problem was that the first comic appearances of heroes like Superman and Batman were rare because comics at the time they first appeared were seen as disposable pulp media back then and many comics were recycled as part of the war effort in WWII and then there were the comic book burnings due to comic books being blamed for social ills inspired by the media with the release of books like Seduction of the Innocent, then you have Batman and Superman becoming pop culture figures thus increasing the value of their first comic book appearances even further. Sure while Cable and Deadpool became popular, many of Liefeld's other characters have not.
Ha! So Deadpool was originally going to be the Liquid Snake to Wolverine's Solid Snake? That's great. Must of just been a real popular plot thread at the time.
13:00 I was upset by the fact they had her speaking spanish instead of portuguese but was then laughing that they followed the scene with a female character whose name in portuguese means "ass"
17:38 Between you bringing up the red outline of his speech balloon and the red stuff ensnaring Cannonball, for a moment I thought Deadpool had weaponized his speech balloon outline, which doesn't sound too farfetched for Deadpool.
Ah yes, I remember when Sebastian Shaw fought the X-Men. It was really good, but I think the issue with Hayden Christiansen did it better because of his extended screentime allowing for a much greater emotional connection.
I agree about not harassing those you don’t like online. Frank Miller is on Twitter for crying out loud and it takes all of my will not to do so to him. It’s hard but not worth doing.
Critica 77y No. not even Chris Brown. Rob Liefeld, Frank Miller, Chris Brown, all detestable people for different reasons but harassing them won’t solve anything and you’ll just become no better than they are.
HeadBangerAust Liefeld, at worst, is an egomaniacal manchild who screws over others and doesn’t think before he acts. Miller is a racist, sexist asshole who hates everyone and everything. Both are awful but there’s also a spectrum and Liefeld is the lesser of them.
Well if he comes back that will be a reference to pre crisis dc and they've messed with the multiverse so much now it would be nice to know what's left
I'm glad you looked past everything and gave Rob his credit for making DP. I remember that review where you said other people made DP popular and it rubbed me the wrong way. I didn't know how to word it without sounding rude so I didn't say anything. Good on ya Linkara :)
@@shadowspider9 He is though. Doesn't matter who did what with the character. They couldn't have done it if the character didn't exist. Rob created DP so he created him and that's that. He made him snarky too but others refined it.
These secret origin videos are by far my favourite videos from you Linkara!! I agree I much prefer the Golden and Silver age comic books over the modern age books, they had a much better style! Great videos, keep them up and please make more golden and silver age secret origins month videos!!
Consdiering the proposed back story for Cable and deadpool before their official back story was given, they totally could have done a Metal Gear style backstory. Wolverine would be the Solid of the group, soldier trying to their past behind them but unable to escape it. Deadpool being the Liquid, being obsessed with Wolverine for getting all the good stuff and finally Cable being the Solidus, the perfect product and if so chosen morally ambiguous. Odd to see that Rob Leifeld could have done anything similar to one of my favorite video game series
1:31- I'll stick with Arm-Fall-Off-Boy from the Legion of Super-Heroes, thank you very much. I still give most of Deadpool's credit to Fabian Nicieza, because he's the one who made him into the fourth wall breaking, Merc with the Mouth we all know and love. 8:52- Rob Liefeld's choices of colors for most of his characters remind me of that of a 2 year old with a coloring book. 9:30- And he was played by Kevin Bacon in the movie X-Men: First Class. 12:30- Ha. Nice two-fer there. With all the clock like sounds in this comic, it makes me think that Captain Hook is scared as shit of this comic. 17:54- Thank Christ Fabian Nicieza came along to turn Deadpool into a memorable and funny character when he did. 24:51- Fun fact: Rob Liefeld loves this joke.
I have Flux installed on my laptop, and I only ever watch these videos at night, so hearing Linkara talk about color schemes that I cannot see is an absolute delight.
Linkara has a shirt about people waiting for his next power rangers videos. Allot of people including myself have been waiting forever for said videos. LINKARA IS TRYING TO PROFIT FROM OUR PAIN AND SUFFERING!!!! Already preordering my shirt.
The 90s bandwagoned on the gritty anti-hero with a mysterious past, especially Image comics. Wolverine and Cable were prime examples. Even Marvel and DC made their own Cable and Wolverine clones. Hell, there was the time they turned Franklin Richards into a Cable clone.
@@phoenixshadow6633 I'm not talking about backstory. I mean Liefeld keeps drawing Cable and Wolverine with minor differences and giving them new names.
Here's a draft for Scrier's Wikipedia page: Scrier was a highly generic comic book character appearing in several Marvel comics durring the 1990's, who nobody cares about. This Wikipedia article is a stub, and should stay that way.
It’s odd seeing some of these names floating around when you see what writers like Al Ewing, Gail Simone and Gerry Duggan do with some of these characters and concepts
We thank you Linkara for doing this review for us, even though you didn't want to.So, someone was imitating Domino when she hadn't been introduced yet? What? And why am I surprised Youngblood's disease predates Youngblood itself? In better news: HEY! Brute Force got a revival! Awesome!
If I had to describe Deadpool's rise it would be Early 90s - Minor character in X universe Late 90s - Popular among core comic fans 2000s - Becomes known outside of comics 2010s - "A" lister in Marvel and full blown hit in popular culture due to movies
13:12 Uh… Linkara? I think that’s the point. I don’t think DeCosta does anything in that room except compensate for a very particular physical handicap.
coolsomeXD Besides the fact that recessive and dominant genes don't work that way, it turned out that Solid Snake was the inferior clone, yet he still won because he didn't believe his genetics dictated who he was while Liquid constantly felt he was held back by his origins.
@@chrisossu2070 I know both points but you don't find out Snake is (supposed) to be the weaker one till the end. Liquids character is driven by the same motives Linkara listed would have been planed for Deadpool.
An additional note about artists unable to draw something: Jack Kirby always tries to avoid drawing ears. Look at a lot of his art, you can't unsee it.
I think the main similarity between Slade and Wade would be that they're villainous super soldiers, which is when the mercenary stuff also comes into play too.
LInkara, you missed to point out another factor of Liefelds horrible artwork ie. inconsistency. 17:02 Deadpool has the gun on his left hand but then it jumps to his right hand in 17:21
With the references to the destruction of the mansion and the then current size of the team, I assume this story takes place after the FALL OF THE MUTANTS storyline, where many characters, including The Morlockss, were killed off! It was a big crossover event that proceeded in a parallel movement throughout the X Titles. Storm, Wolverine and Co. were believed dead when in reality, they were hiding out in Australia! BTW (*Ahem*)....ALAN MOORE's SUPREME comics were actually quite good. And I hope Mr.Moore was well paid.
11:20 It’s probably due to that aforementioned “50 bajillion new characters a year” thing; at that rate, you’re bound to have to recycle the same ideas very quickly
Has Linkara covered the New Mutants at all before now? I think he should - I only have the barest of knowledge with them, but I certainly think they’re worth covering. Al Ewing’s work has caused me to fall in love with Sunspot.
I'd agree with that thing about giving credit to Liefeld for putting pen to paper EXCEPT... What he drew was just a complete Deathestroke rip of with terrible feet with no originality behind it at all and was only done to spite DC.

"My power is just to talk!" -Cheap Trick from JoJo, and also apparently Deadpool
And exploding don't forget that
22:54 Well what were you expecting Linkara. This is Liefeld we're talking about. It's not like he's an artist. ;)
17:38 Between you bringing up the red outline of his speech balloon and the red stuff ensnaring Cannonball, for a moment I thought Deadpool had weaponized his speech balloon outline, which doesn't sound too farfetched for Deadpool.
And Deadpool was also inspired by everybody's favorite American Ninja, Snake eyes
15:06- No I had a 4ft poster of the painting of Tardis exploding from Matt Smith's first seasons. Still have it too.
Ah yes, I remember when Sebastian Shaw fought the X-Men. It was really good, but I think the issue with Hayden Christiansen did it better because of his extended screentime allowing for a much greater emotional connection.
Spoiler: 14:16

Dacosta dies from Youngblood's Disease.
Damn, part of me was hoping for a Hellraiser reference at about 19:24 "You called, I came." -> "The box. You opened it, we came."
I agree about not harassing those you don’t like online. Frank Miller is on Twitter for crying out loud and it takes all of my will not to do so to him. It’s hard but not worth doing.
*TRUER WORDS HAVE NEVER BEEN SAID*
Critica 77y No. not even Chris Brown. Rob Liefeld, Frank Miller, Chris Brown, all detestable people for different reasons but harassing them won’t solve anything and you’ll just become no better than they are.
Critica 77y I’m sorry. It’s just when that guy’s involved, it never appears to be a joke.
ThatOne A-HOLE good that you choose not to harass him. He has some suckie comics after 300, but he doesn't suck as much as Liefeld
HeadBangerAust Liefeld, at worst, is an egomaniacal manchild who screws over others and doesn’t think before he acts. Miller is a racist, sexist asshole who hates everyone and everything. Both are awful but there’s also a spectrum and Liefeld is the lesser of them.
Any chance we'll get a secret origin for Superboy-Prime?
@@comixproviderftw_02 not really. His origin was much different.
Ask yourself - how many people really care about Superboy Prime? He doesn't even have his own series.
Well if he comes back that will be a reference to pre crisis dc and they've messed with the multiverse so much now it would be nice to know what's left
@@fermintenava5911 I care about SBP and would like to see his origin. I think he teamed up with Superman before but I'm not sure.
@@arran4285 EVERYTHING WAS BETTER ON MY EARTH.
I now want a huge 1990s Bart Simpson poster, lol.
Every time I see a picture of Shaft from Youngblood, I always laugh because his bow STILL does not have a string!
These secret origin videos are by far my favourite videos from you Linkara!! I agree I much prefer the Golden and Silver age comic books over the modern age books, they had a much better style! Great videos, keep them up and please make more golden and silver age secret origins month videos!!
18:05 Oh my gosh! Red-X was Deadpool the whole time!
18:12 Um... I think Rob forgot which of Cable's arms is meant to be metal.
I’m pretty sure the only thing Fourarm ever did of more was getting confused with the Ben 10 alien.
Linkara has a shirt about people waiting for his next power rangers videos.
Allot of people including myself have been waiting forever for said videos.
LINKARA IS TRYING TO PROFIT FROM OUR PAIN AND SUFFERING!!!!
Already preordering my shirt.
3:08 A lesson to fanboys and fangirls everwhere of all ages.
18:39 Jesus..! That hand is something else I tell ya.
A great video to help me forget about my dental surgery tomorrow. Have a fantastic day Linkara
13:20 Okay so is it the same woman in those two panels because her hair changes color from like ashy blond to red on the same page.
Ah the 90s, the time where Franklin Richards became a Cable clone.
Ever notice how of the "new characters" he created for Image look like Wolverine or Cable?
The 90s bandwagoned on the gritty anti-hero with a mysterious past, especially Image comics. Wolverine and Cable were prime examples. Even Marvel and DC made their own Cable and Wolverine clones. Hell, there was the time they turned Franklin Richards into a Cable clone.
And Gambit.
@@phoenixshadow6633 I'm not talking about backstory. I mean Liefeld keeps drawing Cable and Wolverine with minor differences and giving them new names.
@@carlrood4457 That is the beauty of tracing.
@ULGROTHA My eyes hate my brain for remembering that image.
I always assumed Deadpool and Cable *were* using rayguns.
Here's a draft for Scrier's Wikipedia page:
Scrier was a highly generic comic book character appearing in several Marvel comics durring the 1990's, who nobody cares about.
This Wikipedia article is a stub, and should stay that way.
18:08 missed opportunity
Deadpool almost looks nude
It’s odd seeing some of these names floating around when you see what writers like Al Ewing, Gail Simone and Gerry Duggan do with some of these characters and concepts
Gail is the queen of taking forgotten jokes and making them something
We thank you Linkara for doing this review for us, even though you didn't want to.So, someone was imitating Domino when she hadn't been introduced yet? What? And why am I surprised Youngblood's disease predates Youngblood itself? In better news: HEY! Brute Force got a revival! Awesome!
18:35 They don’t call him The Merc with a Mouth for nuthin’, ya know.
Been waiting all week for this! One of THOSE stories
Online encounter mention at 3:05; Don’t tell me that’s my friend’s doing!
I would like to see a Deadpool retrospective video, seeing how Deadpool turned into the merc with a mouth everyvbody loves
Gideon: proof once again no one can rock that color scheme quite like Dumplin and Puddin.
13:01
-> Brazilian office
-> speaks in Spanish
seems legit
8:40, Gideon has the right idea by wearing the brown pants ;)
7:28 I didn't know Deadpool appear in the 90s. I thought he appeared around the 2000s.
How different this Deadpool was than he is today?
If I had to describe Deadpool's rise it would be
Early 90s - Minor character in X universe
Late 90s - Popular among core comic fans
2000s - Becomes known outside of comics
2010s - "A" lister in Marvel and full blown hit in popular culture due to movies
14:55 So The Simpsons do exist in Earth-616. That was surprising.
12:51 - what the fuck is going on with that hand? Is it deflating?
16:48 - Okay, forget the hand, what the fuck is going on with Deadpool's leg?
And 4 years later Scrier still has no wiki listing
CAPTAIN DEADPOOL!!!!
SMG4's SuperFan Nah, just Deadpool.
*Captain Canada XDD
TheB29Bomber captain electronpool
GrimSister seems like he'd have to fight wolverine and captain canuk for that title
Captective Pikapool!
DARN YOU LINKARA, I AM A FOREARM FAN AND I TAKE UMBRAGE WITH YOU FOR MAKING OF SUCH A BELOVED CHARACTER!!!
13:12 Uh… Linkara? I think that’s the point. I don’t think DeCosta does anything in that room except compensate for a very particular physical handicap.
You know Solid Snake and Liquid has the same backstory as Twins as well..
@Ultimate Hedgehog Solid Snake was the superior clone and Liquid was the reject.
@Ultimate Hedgehog Liquid has a chip on his shoulder because he believes he was inferior and Snake got the dominant soldier genes.
The Memes!
coolsomeXD Besides the fact that recessive and dominant genes don't work that way, it turned out that Solid Snake was the inferior clone, yet he still won because he didn't believe his genetics dictated who he was while Liquid constantly felt he was held back by his origins.
@@chrisossu2070 I know both points but you don't find out Snake is (supposed) to be the weaker one till the end. Liquids character is driven by the same motives Linkara listed would have been planed for Deadpool.
18:13 - Well, there you have it folks. Cable is the one responsible for Baraka-pool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Feel free to hate him all you want.
Those calves. What is going on with the calves. It must be from sitting in boxes. Bro got shipped off in an Amazon truck.
I really want to see a super hero named Captain Crotch now :P
He punches villains...WITH HIS SCHLONG!!!!
An additional note about artists unable to draw something: Jack Kirby always tries to avoid drawing ears. Look at a lot of his art, you can't unsee it.
20:26
OH MY GOD HE REFERENCED IT!
I think the main similarity between Slade and Wade would be that they're villainous super soldiers, which is when the mercenary stuff also comes into play too.
LInkara, you missed to point out another factor of Liefelds horrible artwork ie. inconsistency. 17:02 Deadpool has the gun on his left hand but then it jumps to his right hand in 17:21
At last! Linkara's revenge for all the times people bugged him about HOP, AND IT IS GLORIOUS.
People bugged him about that Illumination Easter Bunny movie?
With the references to the destruction of the mansion and the then current size of the team, I assume this story takes place after the FALL OF THE MUTANTS storyline, where many characters, including The Morlockss, were killed off! It was a big crossover event that proceeded in a parallel movement throughout the X Titles. Storm, Wolverine and Co. were believed dead when in reality, they were hiding out in Australia!
BTW (*Ahem*)....ALAN MOORE's SUPREME comics were actually quite good. And I hope Mr.Moore was well paid.
i've been waiting so long for this
11:20 It’s probably due to that aforementioned “50 bajillion new characters a year” thing; at that rate, you’re bound to have to recycle the same ideas very quickly
Has Linkara covered the New Mutants at all before now? I think he should - I only have the barest of knowledge with them, but I certainly think they’re worth covering. Al Ewing’s work has caused me to fall in love with Sunspot.
So.... not gonna mention the costume change at 18:09 it’s the Deadpool thing in this comic
This review really makes me want that Youngblood's Disease Shirt you made all those years ago.
I'd agree with that thing about giving credit to Liefeld for putting pen to paper EXCEPT... What he drew was just a complete Deathestroke rip of with terrible feet with no originality behind it at all and was only done to spite DC.
Every time I see the tie on the new outfit I wanna tighten and fix it
