I love how it's pretty much IMPOSSIBLE to read the narration of a Silver Age Marvel comic WITHOUT having Stan Lee's voice reading it in your head. *sigh* Rest well, Mr. Lee.
I really liked the retcon they put in later that the reason his first costume is yellow is because he made it from the robe his dad would wear to the ring.
I like to believe that daredevil hade a yellow suit because he couldn’t tell the difference between red and yellow and the guy at the fabric store lied to him because they where out of red.
Daredevil is an example of a superhero who's weakness is his power. He super senses aside from his vision. If you shoot a really loud gun next to his ear it completely disorientates him.
This Fixer part makes ironic sense when you realise that the first significant work Frank Miller ever did was finalising pencils for Daredevil. He's also the one who killed Elektra and ruined Matt Murdoch's life.
@@lavabite I'm not saying it's bad. I like to have characters that react to the fact their life is eternal pain and torment. I don't want everyone to do that but having Matt Murdock think of his life as hell is refreshing in the marvel universe

I'm going to ask a very stupid question: How exactly is a blind superhero that's been invented for a visual medium (i.e. comic books) supposed to appeal to the blind, who can't read comics at all? Wouldn't a hero like that work better for an audio drama or radio play? Bob: "Hey, Steve! Check out what I got you for Christmas! It's a Daredevil comic!" Steve: "Bob, you know I'm blind! I couldn't read comics if I wanted to." Bob: "I know, but Daredevil's blind, too. And he's awesome!" Steve: "If you say so..." Bob: *turns some pages* "Wow, Daredevil's got the coolest costume ever." Steve: "I'll take your word for it." Bob: "Whoa, I've never seen anyone jump like that!" Steve: "Neither have I."
makes way more sense when you remember that comic books are mostly for kids. I mean your kid is blind and wants you to read them a story chances are the blind superhero is gonna be a hit. As for the images the daredevil netflix series had Matt going to an art gallery where the owner not only thinks it's normal but it's a good way for romance as someone describing an art piece can be quite a bonding experience with a date.
Sometimes representation is about depicting to others that you believe that a given class of people is important enough to justify inclusion. Plus, there is a category of legally blind where they might still be able to see very large, bright images.
Can you imagine how funny it would be if this line about "the prized first edition" and "one of your most beloved comics" or whatever would be in Action Comics No 1?
@@TheMightyBattleSquid No, point still stands. A blind person doesn't turn their eyeballs at someone to perceive them, even if they are aware of the presence. There's no point to it. It's one of the things which actors find challenging about portraying the blind. So, actually, the artist nailed it.
The only issue I always kinda had with Daredevil is that, for all the talk of how he's blind, he never seems all too hindered by this life-changing effect. You have so many benefits, but doesn't seem to have much of a shortcoming to his life. I suppose things like writing on the wall, defining colour or watching video would certainly be tough, but for the perception of depth, laying out his surroundings and alike, he seems to have equal capasity to a regular humans, but in all directions, so you could argue he sees *better* after he went blind. At least from all that I've witnessed. Having an all-range, 360 detector is an awsome super-power and it's not like it'd inheritly undermine his handicap. It just needed restriction. If it was only like a 5-meter or below radius or something, it would still emphesize his blindness and come off as a balancer. Being completely aware of everything within his zone, yet absolutely blinded to the world outside of that and needing to close distances (Villains like Bullseye making for a perfect anti-thesis) or utilize his other hightened senses.
+AlluMan96 Well, there is a scene in the movie that shows that he has to constantly take painkillers (due to his sensitive touch amplifying the pain from every injury he takes) and that he has to sleep in a sensory deprivation tank because he can't shut off any of his super-senses (and also why he can't keep a girlfriend for long) in order to get any sleep. And (for a more mundane drawback), he still can only read in braille (or something printed in a specific way). Don't know if these appeared in the comics (since I haven't read them) but I noticed them while watching the movie.
Ah, Daredevil, The Man Without Fear Himself. I may be in the minority when I write this, but I tend to be more of a fan of the COMICS than I am his Netflix show (and yes, I'm looking forward to his sequel show on Disney +). The comics made him acrobatic and unstoppable, as opposed to the show which made him into a living punching bag. Seriously, almost EVERY episode seemed to show Matt Murdock get his ass kicked, to a point where I wondered if I was supposed to take him seriously as a hero. I get that it supposed to be a form of "realism" but in REAL LIFE a person who sustained THAT MUCH INJURY should probably have been permeant enough to put Daredevil out of commission for life.
The lie detector thing never bothered me, to be honest. I know the real-world polygraph is unreliable, prone to interpreter bias, and its use can actually poison the results, but...I mean, this is a guy who's had some pretty ridiculous powers. At one point, I remember him being able to recognise individual people based on their hearth rhythm. It's so over-the-top, I'm inclined to give it to him. Also, apparently at some point his powers were so awesome he could read print through laminated plastic. I mean, obviously nobody has to agree with me. I'm just saying it would probably bother me if it was on some forensic show, but not with the Man -Who Can Feel Colour- Without Fear.
Remembering that line from sky high "kids who get bit by radioactive animals or fall in to nuclear waste, their powers normally show up the next day. Or, they die"
Okay, my quick search here didn't bring any results, so here my answer: They DO bring up that his eyesight can be fixed. Matt fears this will dull his other senses again, so he tries to avoid it, even though Karen really pushes him towards this, so he can be fixed to be able to marry...I mean, so he can live a happy life, of course. When he finally does visit the ONLY surgeon capable of the operation, said surgeon is captured by a monarch and held against his will, only to sacrifice his life for the freedom of all, giving Matt a nice excuse why all this didn't work out. Also, very obvious in the first few issues: Daredevil was also introduced as a copy to Spider-Man: A young teenage hero prone to wisecrack. It's the same way the X-Men were conceived as a copy of the Fantastic Four, down to being heroes of the public at first and easily trusted by the military. And a third thing: Daredevil notices himself, how stupid it was, not actually having a tape-recorder in his cane. He changes this right after this issue
I like to believe that daredevil hade a yellow suit because he couldn’t tell the difference between red and yellow and the guy at the fabric store lied to him because they where out of red.

You don't have to pay for anything and no harm comes to your friend's account (unless you embarrass them with some movie or television show in their viewing history). Speaking of which, the issue of Matt's father winning the fight to make his son proud was handled better there. In that version, Matt was a kid and his senses allowed him to overhear that his father was planning to throw the fight, so his faith in his father was put to the test.
About that promise Matt’s dad made to his wife before she died, I’m pretty sure the the intent is that he made that promise himself to her, rather than her asking him to promise that. Though the joke is still pretty funny

I think Daredevil added the second D and another reason for his costume change is it's similarly to another Marvel hero called Demolition Man, who also had a yellow and black suit with a big red D on it, although he looks more like a pro-wrestling Wolverine in my opinion.
I love your videos man. KEEP BEING AWESOME!! Actually, I can't remember the issue number, but can you do the origin of Ghost from the Thunderbolts comic from way back when? 'A Ghost's Story' is the title. I got Stan Lee to sign when I went to Dallas Comic Con.

Two notable retcons about Daredevil’s origin: The truck carrying the radioactive waste was owned by Tony Stark (though given this was revealed in a What If?, its canonicity should be taken with a grain of salt for 616) The guy he saved during the accident was in the midst of molesting his own daughter (sadly, this is hard canon, with Matt regretting that he ended up losing his sight to save someone who didn’t deserve it)
0:35: Wow...that is EXACTLY my position too! (Yeah, I could just use my sister's Netflix, but I still have to catch up on Agents of SHIELD, Gravity Falls, and Star Wars Rebels, so....)
I've loved Daredevil ever since I saw him in those episodes of the 90's Spider-man cartoon. It's interesting to see how much the origin has changed since his first appearance, especially since I often hear the story that the Kingpin killed his father, which I personally think works better, as it adds a bit more of a connection between the two rivals. I'll also just straight up say that his original costume is just TERRIBLE, in my opinion. It has the acrobat look going, I'll grant it that, but nothing about it screams DEVIL, like the red costume does. Btw, if the Netflix series gets any sort of DVD release, BUY IT. It's awesome, and I seriously binge watched the whole season in 2 days.
Edward Albert was Great as Daredevil. He wasn't half bad as the Silver Surfer as well.... We lost him to soon. Simon Templeman is my favourite voice for Doctor Doom ; best part about the 1990's Fantastic 4 animated series in my humble opinion .
I have read a lot of daredevil comics, and none of them tied in the kingpin to his fathers death. Not saying there isn’t some, but I’ve never come across it. To me, it would be just too big a coincidence to have the kingpin involved well before matt became a superhero. after all, arguably the two biggest father figures dying in comics, uncle Ben in marvel and the Wayne’s in dc, neither of the killers wound up to be a part of their rogues. Yes, Joe Chill has a name in the Batman books but he was always a low level thug.
I kind of like how the cane on the cover is white, like a modern blind person's cane is. Though, honestly, I prefer Miller's retcon that Matt's first billy club was just a police officer's knight stick;'I can't help but wonder exactly how Matt got the materials to make his first one. Am I the only one wondering why the guy Matt saved was blind? That seems like a weird form of irony to me. And shouldn't the old man have been able to hear the truck coming, maybe get out of the way to make Matt realize that blind Individuals can still perceive the world?
If anyone wants to pick up this and the other first like 20 issues of Daredevil, Marvel just released the first Daredevil epic collection, just thought I'd make people aware just in case anyone wanted to check this issue out, among the others that came after.
pious83 Stan Lee might of worked on those stories, he has trouble remembering names, hence why he gives characters alliterative names, maybe he forgot the that he used the name before?
I bet they don't sell any radioactive substances in comic books, despite the supposed many beneficial things surrounding it, is probably because a crime boss or armed mugger could just waltz in and get some, themselves.
Everyone is talking about the Daredevil movie but I'm just curious how you got your hands on TOM SERVO!!! (He's in a glass box in the Wrestler scene. I noticed him at 9:55)
Huh. I'm really surprised Linkara didn't bring up the dislike of Daredevil he mentioned in his original text review for the Surgeon General story. Maybe he changed his opinion of the character. Also, Orange is the New Black got a DVD release, so I'd bet dollars to donuts that Daredevil will get a DVD release.
I'd imagine so. Marvel knows that the series is highly recommended and they can make more money having people buy DVD's to get money from people who don't have Netflix.
I didn't have Netflix either when I started watching the daredevil TV show. I was watching it online through putlocker or watchfree. If you get a chance to watch it. Do it. You will not regret it. And you'll more than likely realize how much of frank millers daredevil influenced the show.
ok, here's a stupid question, if Daredevil is a superhero made to represent the blind, how can the blind read it? I'm not aware of any comics that are printed in Braille, and it would kind of be hard to see the artwork, if you're, you know, blind. Not trying to badmouth the blind here, but it is an interesting problem.
+JakJak Many have some vision left, but they see mostly large areas of different color, like a very pixilated picture (but without the pixels, of course). I doubt it would be enough to read a comic, but I did hear about some comics being printed in Braille, on plastic or another hard material, with the outlines being three dimensional.

Cant wait for a Miller Time on his Daredevil run
18:18 Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't he end up getting tripped up by a pacemaker on more than one occasion?
Eagerly await next week with Supergirl's origin, as that one will have two comics looked at.

+TheSkully343 well, I can't SEE these jokes ending soon
bada bup bada bup
Also can you do a review of futures end which was like countdown but much worse please
Man the way foggy looked at Matt . That joke is too easy. :-D
I think Daredevil added the second D and another reason for his costume change is it's similarly to another Marvel hero called Demolition Man, who also had a yellow and black suit with a big red D on it, although he looks more like a pro-wrestling Wolverine in my opinion.
Daredevil: I don't know who really made me.
Spider-man: amature
The Blue Beetle: Wait, I did it before them?
The man Murdock fights in the boxing match would later become the absorbing man
Good news linkara. They released the seasons of Daredevil on DVD so you can own it lol. I’m not asking you to binge just check it out
I love your videos man. KEEP BEING AWESOME!! Actually, I can't remember the issue number, but can you do the origin of Ghost from the Thunderbolts comic from way back when? 'A Ghost's Story' is the title. I got Stan Lee to sign when I went to Dallas Comic Con.
Why hasn't there been a Crossover with Daredevil and TMNT yet?
Technically there has.....There origin is LITERALLY the same as Daredevil as in they got the oooze after the guy swerved to avoid Matt
@@jfdrac an ACTUAL crossover? Have Kari teacup with Elektra that would be awesome.
@@eanrollins3443 No not where they meet but as I said Dardevils origin is also what led to the turtles according to the orginal Mirage books ...but yeah with all the crossovers Turtles have done (Archie, Batman, Power Rangers and even par of the huge Infestation Zombie crossover to name a few) its shocking they never teamed up with Marvel
Two notable retcons about Daredevil’s origin:
The truck carrying the radioactive waste was owned by Tony Stark (though given this was revealed in a What If?, its canonicity should be taken with a grain of salt for 616)
The guy he saved during the accident was in the midst of molesting his own daughter (sadly, this is hard canon, with Matt regretting that he ended up losing his sight to save someone who didn’t deserve it)
Oh come on!
0:35: Wow...that is EXACTLY my position too!
(Yeah, I could just use my sister's Netflix, but I still have to catch up on Agents of SHIELD, Gravity Falls, and Star Wars Rebels, so....)
"Criminals are a superstitious and exceptionally stupid lot."
0:42 That was oddly prescient. Like I know the sentiment has existed for a while but that really amused me to hear in retrospect.
You forget about the cheesy ass theme song from the 90s Fantastic Four cartoon.
+TheSkully343 don't forget the first season was the worst season in the series
I hope the Lennon specs stay around for whenever you need to play as Matt Murdock like you do with Batman and the Batman mask.
If anyone wants to pick up this and the other first like 20 issues of Daredevil, Marvel just released the first Daredevil epic collection, just thought I'd make people aware just in case anyone wanted to check this issue out, among the others that came after.
Daredevil season 1 is coming out on Blu-Ray soon.
I don't think that was the point
Yep, it is. Maybe he'll watch it then, assuming he isn't too busy.
drksideofthewal No it wasn't, and even if it was it's region 2
KidSnivy69
Fine, I'll bite. What was "the point" according to you?
drksideofthewal Just he probably doesn't really care about Netflix Daredevil
Black Bat was the first blind super Hero and there was already a Dare-Devil! Read Masks and Project Super-powers! *runs*
Well done, sir.
I wonder why Arnold Stang is working for the Fixer?
I'll say this - I absolutely despise Frank Miller almost as much as you do, but Born Again is a damn good story arc.
17:25 O_O
Now is that a *THIRD* Betty Ross in a Marvel Origin Story? (Captain America, Incredible Hulk) They must really love this name???
pious83 Stan Lee might of worked on those stories, he has trouble remembering names, hence why he gives characters alliterative names, maybe he forgot the that he used the name before?
Betsy Ross.
No, Matt is referencing the woman who sewed together the first American Flag. She is not nor has ever been a fictional character.
A radiation wizard did it. Ultimate cop out.
Supergirl? Not TMNT? Missed a trick there.
As much as I dislike Farnk Millers newer stuff, I really enjoy his old Daredevil comics.
I bet they don't sell any radioactive substances in comic books, despite the supposed many beneficial things surrounding it, is probably because a crime boss or armed mugger could just waltz in and get some, themselves.
The Daredevil series is on home video along with the rest of the Netflix shows, just FYI.
+Matt Lipton i hope it does
I'd imagine so. Marvel knows that the series is highly recommended and they can make more money having people buy DVD's to get money from people who don't have Netflix.
+Matt Lipton I think a DVD was already announced.
good news! I found the Daredevil series in a store!
I didn't have Netflix either when I started watching the daredevil TV show. I was watching it online through putlocker or watchfree. If you get a chance to watch it. Do it. You will not regret it. And you'll more than likely realize how much of frank millers daredevil influenced the show.
Stop insulting the Fixer ! I love him !!
ok, here's a stupid question, if Daredevil is a superhero made to represent the blind, how can the blind read it? I'm not aware of any comics that are printed in Braille, and it would kind of be hard to see the artwork, if you're, you know, blind. Not trying to badmouth the blind here, but it is an interesting problem.
I suppose the parents read comics out loud to the blind children those days....?
I can be wrong here, but if I remember correctly is a misconception to thing that many blind people are 100% blind.
There are actually comics in braille.
+Destroyer831642 I was thinking the exact same thing. I guess you can print a comic in braille. I have never seen one, though.
They may have confused radiation with chemicals when writing this
