It amazes me that so few people are aware of how architecture informs our existence.
I live in Chicago, and recently moved from the East Lakeview neighborhood to Uptown. The difference in architecture is jaw dropping. It is clear how much 19th century and early 20th century commercial buildings and homes remain stretching into Edgewater. My friends think it's boring, but I want to know everything about them and the people who built them and first worked and lived in them.
    Beauty is important.

The Czech author who wrote despairingly about the “uglification of the world” is Milan Kundera. Scruton refers to this in his book The Aesthetics of Architecture

Sir Roger is a national treasure. The Conservative party, who just sacked him for reasonable comments taken out of context, is an increasingly doomed national embarrassment and disgrace.

I agree. Just like the vast majority of conservative parties in Europe, they have turned left because they don't know how to stand their ground. Sadly, the left in Europe is brave and controls the cultural behavior of most Europeans, while conservatives are letting their heritage die because they don't want progressives to call them fascists. What a disgrace.

Beauty is a component of the universal creative force. As important as procreation, continued expansion and differentiation. To understand beauty properly you need to turn the looking glass of consciousness around. Beauty resonates with something already in your soul. Like the sympathetic resonance of a guitar string being plucked will cause a guitar across the room to come alive and resonate the same wave. Fine art and architecture can resonate with your soul and thereby please your sense of well being and please God.
This is why the ancient Greeks used devine proportions in their buildings, so they would resonate with your soul and suit their intended purpose. The Romans later came alone and dug up what was ancient history to them when they copied Greek architecture and included occult principles and proportions into their buildings as well. Leave all religion and secret knowledge out of it if you like and just come to terms with the fact that humans are happier around beauty and true beauty is determined not by personality but by your subconscious.

1:30 woah... I had never herd that before... It's a little mind blowing to think that part of his personal intent was likely rooted in striking back at modern architecture,,, 0_o

In terms of the trivium aligning with the three ideals, I think I'd reverse his assignation of grammar and rhetoric. Grammar maps more to beauty (order, form) and rhetoric to goodness (content).

Scruton was not making an argument in itself, but in western societies we do not give any validity, credit or reference to a man who mass-killed people, that is an awful disrespect to the victims - no matter if it's philosophical interesting. There are thousands of other points to make about arcitecture.

@@tomhummel2641 Hes just stating a fact with no disrespect to the victims. Also there might be more examples but the TT was one of the most important events of C21. In no way is it tantamount to saying the fate of the towers was for the best along with the myriad of souls they took with them, or that terrorists have sound opinions ... Just look at it as insight into the motivations of extreme acts and how disgust and a desire for beauty plays into them. Analyzing =/= justifying. Mentioning =/= disrespecting. In a way it also brings one closer to the act... It is hard to conceive but that terrorist could just as well be yourself/myself/anyone under different circumstances.

"the whole purpose of one's existence is to get to a place beyond ugliness and beauty" John pentland. "Nothing is good or bad but thinking makes it so" hamlet. We are constantly identifying with externals and in the process we lose ourselves. Where are "YOU" in all this?! "what do you read, my lord? Words, words, words" hamlet. 99.9% of conversation is nothing more than the mechanical expression of platitudes. Life is too short for this

By your same stupid logic, we should consider it ‘absolutely disgusting’ to merely mention that Hitler loved animals, or had a healthy diet, or was a moderately talented artist. Or indeed to mention any unsavoury character at all without putting on a show of self-righteous disapproval to signal your virtue to others. Do grow up and stop being offended by everything.
