Who else could call 2 games in one telecast like Harlan can? He has always been one of my favorite play-by-play announcers. I love him on NBA coverage.
Gus Johnson is the only other one up there in terms of multiple sports. I know there’s not so much NBA coverage with him but he’s covered college basketball and football alongside the NFL. The only other multi sport announcer I can think of outside of Al Michaels is Mike Tirico who I thought was pretty solid when he was on ESPN commentating on NBA and NFL games before he switched to NBC for just NFL only.
Kevin brings an excitement to the booth that's very rare these days. As the networks get rid of the Gus Johnsons of the world, Harlan has found this perfect middle ground between stoic professional and fan of the game
Truth. I think one of the hardest things for an announcer to do is know when to be quiet, especially in basketball with indoor arenas that carry sound better. Let the fans get a feel for the energy of the environment. Harlan has always been great with that as well. Simply the GOAT.
lifelong Chiefs fan here. Kevin, you are as much a part of my life memories as my own family. This is a great video showing your recall. Thank you for being such a good man to Lenny, Griggs, and all of the Wolfpack! Keep up the good work!
As awesome as Mitch is, I still miss Kevin. When Kevin does Chiefs games, I still want him to say as he did then and Mitch does, "Touchdown Kansas City!"
7:38 This is such an underrated aspect about broadcasting sports: letting the big moments shine. It's so much more powerful when they let the emotion of the moment take center-stage. It annoys me to no end when a broadcaster feels the need to talk over it because it adds mothing to the moment and actively detracts from it (I'm looking square at Tony Romo yapping over the elated Buffalo crowd when Nyheim Hines returned the kickoff for a TD after the Damar Hamlin game). It's the secret weapon of great orators; not orating at all
Kevin Harlan has a cadence like a tent preacher and I mean that in the best way. He could call a knitting competition and leave you in the edge of your seat. It's steady and rhythmic without being monotonous.
One of the most important things a play-by-play guy can know is when to let the pictures do the talking, let the crowd noise take over, and just appreciate the moment. Harlan is an artist.
As good as Harlan is on tv, his radio work is unbelievable. He will, from the time a team breaks a huddle to the time the ball is snapped, tell you whih hash the ball is placed on, the offensive formation, the number of defensive lineman, he paints an exquisite picture with words in a rapid fire delivery that John Moschitta himself would be envious of
Kevin is the best announcer of all time imo. It's the excitement he shows but the ability to let the moment speak for itself as well that makes him the greatest
Before he started doing it for network TV, he was the radio guy here in Kansas City... I miss the hell out of him. It's been 3 decades. Anyhow, it is still special when he calls the Chiefs on network TV.
When Kevin Garnett was a rookie, he was there Timberwolves play by play guy. I believe he was the one to label him as the big ticket. That was when I became a fan of Harlan. Such a great professional.
Boy as a Dolphins fan that 07 season was rough and yes, I cried when we won. Because were about to be the first franchise to go undefeated and defeated in NFL history
Streaker Niners Rams Two streakers clobbered Jets Colts The cat Cowboys Giants I’m calling both games Chargers Chiefs Streaker Bucs Chiefs Superbowl Two games Vikings Niners
Don’t get me wrong..I love Jim Nantz..but Kevin Harlan is by far my favorite NFL announcer. His excitement, his fluid broadcasting, I truly think there’s no one currently better. I may be biased since I’m a Bills fan and he calls a lot of our games but man you know you’re in for a great game when he’s on the mike…
By far the best sportscaster behind the microphone 🎤 Kevin Harlan makes plays more exciting than they already are. No matter what is going on. Be it a sports play, a cat on the field, or a streaker.
I got love for Marv Albert, Mike Breen, Gus Johnson, Eric Collins especially as a hornets fan, but Kevin Harlan will always be my 🐐. So many legendary calls/career enriching nicknames for all time greats
Kevin Harlan & Al Michaels are probably the best NFL announcers in history. Every time you heard them, you know you’re in for a treat. Especially Kevin
Keep in mind this man is also doing NBA and college basketball! What a crazy memory to think specifically about just the football games when trying to recollect which games these were
His call during Super Bowl 54 when Damien Williams scored the game sealing TD was great. As much as he tries to remain unbiased, there was a little bit of that Chiefs fandom rushing back in that game. He was the play-by-play guy here in KC before Mitch and between his radio here in KC and CBS three of his broadcast partners (Lenny, Rich, and Trent) are former Chiefs QBs.
We sports fans are truly spoiled by the riches we have now when it comes to play by play/color guys and Kevin Harlan is at the top of that list. Dude brings such enthusiasm and unlike some people *cough* Collinsworth *cough* can express their appreciation for talent without relentlessly sucking them off for 3 hours every Sunday. There is literally no such thing as a bad Kevin Harlan call. It just doesn't exist.
Put this guy on the 1:25pm slate and give us a shoot out it’ll be the most electric game you watch that game, something about those factors just make it magic
A part of me was hoping for pull up your pants and be a man or the cat running into the CDW endzone for a TD XD Harlan is a treasure! Love how he calls all preseason games for the Packers.
While not the halcyon days of Mahomes and co. The Schottenheimer era of KC Chiefs would not have been the same without Kevin Harlan on 101.1 The Fox. We’d turn the sound off on the tv and turn the radio up, even listen to him on earbuds in the stadium. “Oh baby what a play!” Will forever be the sound of highlights, break out plays, and miraculous events on the gridiron. It took Mitch Holtiss a while to find his stride with such a tough act to follow. I’m sure CBS sports is a bigger, better paying job, but if he ever wants to come back to KC I’m sure the city would have him in a heart beat.
You ever watched little kids, like 5 and 6 year olds, play youth soccer where the whole group just bunches up around the ball and no one really kicks it and nothing much happens? Yeah, Kevin Harlan would make that exciting and fun to watch.
Kevin “I’m calling both games!” Harlan
If it wasn’t for Rich Gannon prompting him with, “I’m getting confused, which game are you calling?” we might never have gotten that gem.

No. He narrates every PLAY like it's the play to win the SuperBowl. He kinda overdoes it IMO.

'I'M CALLING NO GAMES!'.
