Here's another idea I had while looking through some of my woodworking books on carpentry. Instead of using the standard miter cut on the corner of a set of stairs for a deck or other exterior projects, you could use a lapping joint like the one shown in the video. One of the biggest problems with mitered stair treads and construction standard lumber is that this lumber often shrinks over time creating large gaps more than mitered treads often connect and this might be a solution to that problem.

Great video, Greg ! My concern would be, that the wood might rot prematurely because of the extensive cutting !

      Definitely another concern to consider.

On 45 degree miter corners, have you seen the use of a mending plate on the bottom and has this precluded the expansion of the gap at the miter?

I like the idea of a mending plate and it quite possibly could reduce some of your problems, but might not eliminate them.

I like this on inside corners instead of 45s . After doing one recently I thought 💭 why don’t I do this on outside corners? Everyone is use to 45 but if they are outside the joints are gonna move and open regardless. Also arguably looks better

I would not lap joint them as you are showing for rot purposes. Simply add blocking. Inspectors want risers on exterior anyway it will be hidden

Yes, you could definitely do this without notching or lapping.

How do you attach the corner stringer?

With nails and screws, but that won't work then provide me with more details or email me a picture of your problem.

you bond two stringers together with opposing 45 degrees, then work out the rest of the 45 cut offs.

I ended up using corner hangers that I pounded out to 135s it worked very well the corner stringer is rock solid.
