I first heard this song in a record shop in Glasgow, the city in which I grew up. It was the first time I'd returned for over a decade, and in that time I'd lost my mother to cancer, and also got into long term recovery from alcohol abuse. Whatever the intended narrative of the song, the imagery and Shara Worden's voice, the time and place, gave it an emotional impact for me personally that has never since been equalled.
Can we talk about the music that accompanies the Forest Queen whenever it's her verse? Because that is musical perfection, it perfectly gives the feeling of a powerful and fickle nature spirit, and I love it!
Mother I can hear your foot-fall now Soft disturbance in the dead-fall how It proceeds you like a black smoke pall Still the wanting comes in waves And you delivered me from danger then Pulled my cradle from the reedy glen Swore to save me from the world of men Still the wanting comes in waves In waves And waves And the wanting comes in waves And the wanting comes in waves And I want this night And I want this night Oh How I made you I wrought you, I pulled you From war I labored you From cancer I cradled you And now This is how I am repaid This is how I am repaid Remember when I found you The miseries that hounded you And I gave you motion Anointed with lotions And now This is how I am repaid This is how I am repaid Mother hear this proposition right Grant me freedom to enjoy this night And I'll return to you at break of light For the wanting comes in waves And waves And waves Still the wanting comes in waves Still the wanting comes in waves Still the wanting comes in waves And you owe me life And you owe me life And if I grant you this favor to hand you Your life for the evening I will retake by morning And so Consider it your debt repaid Consider it your debt repaid Repaid Repaid

I am really impressed with the modulation and correlation of sound and vision in this piece of art,Yes Art! Both tunes molded as one and ebbing over each other. Whoever did the animation should be commended as well. Very cryptic and synapse firing descriptive! Haunting melody indeed! Bravo
Chronologically, A Cautionary Tale would probably come at the same time as the beginning of The Mariners Revenge, and The wanting comes in waves would be around the time when the mom dies in The Mariners Revenge, cause it says something about cradling mom when he has cancer, and then the Mariners Revenge would finish it up I think
Actually this song ties into "The Rake's Song" not Mariner's. This story is about a human child adopted by, effectively, a goddess who grants him the form of a fawn during the day and a man during the night. Guy falls in love with a human woman, goes to meet her, the Rake kidnapped her. Faun promises his life to a river if it'll let him save her, since it's supposed to be impossible to cross. He saves her, they try to cross the river and drown together.
phiriulfur The rake on this album has nothing to do with the guy who caused the mother in Mariners grief. The entire album(Hazards of love) is a self contained story.
I've seemed to have transitioned to a level of acceptance with this estrangement. I still think of you everyday just about, I'm sorry it couldn't be any other way. I'll always love you.
Good comparison. Love that song/video too. Can't go wrong with vikings, giant robots, and electric guitars that shoot laser beams, I guess! :) I'm a fan of Shara Worden - her vocals here are magnificent.
I've been no contact for nearly a year now. The nights I can't get your voice out of my head, I think of the proposition here and it feels so great to know that I don't have to return to you at the break of light....not mentally, not physically..nothing. I am free and yet I still feel that sting like I don't deserve the freedom, that's messed up because I know I deserve it. So day by day I work on believing in myself the way you never did and never let me do for myself. The distance has been far between us for a long while before the silence and pure disconnect took place. I'm looking forward to seeing you fade in my rear view....even if I still miss you some days when I shouldn't. Despite it all, With Love, The daughter who only ever tried her hardest to be loved by you.
Khids! from the first cord, the female vocalist brought back memories of Grace Slick (White Rabbit) Jefferson Starship - Lead male vocals; Herman's Hermits ; The End of the World. group vocals ; this generations, "Mike's Chair," Let the Waters Rise. Check it and see!
That riff reminds me of Jason Forrest's War Photographer - and the two tunes share a little of the video style. Both are fucking awesome, which helps too.
Hurray for animated pop art, but i would have thought the animation would have had at least a small bit of relation to the song. And the synchronizing could have been maybe more obvious.

I fucking love how sinister the song gets when Sharon takes over. The malice and rage and jealousy are so beautifully expressed, brought to life.
you kiss the forest queen with that mouth?
*Shara

It's an amazing album, end to end. Worden's vocals here, fuck me, there is so much to unpack. Beautiful tune, beautiful album, a work of art.
My boyfriend’s DnD character is a Lurker in the Deep warlock whose patron is a siren. We’ve been listening to this song on a loop.
Awwwww, nerd love! ❤

Eli Burry-Schnepp i always thought it had an Edward scissor hands vibe when it transitions to her
Kind of reminds me of that one poem on that grave, "Death is our debt to nature due, which I have paid, and so will you."
Thanks. I hadn't heard of that, but it's beautiful.
So underrated in my opinion. My favorite song the Decemberists have put out there.
Did they make more songs?
I must have missed them. ;-)

you missed a couple of lines right at the beginning..... :) don't shoot js.
thank you
It’s “From ore I labored you”, not “From war”.
This song perfectly captures what this band is capable of. It's so beautiful.
Did you grow up with a sweet, loving, narcissistic mother? Here's your song..
Aye u just made me completely get why this album related so much to me as a kid thanks I'm gonna go cry now
Kindness that devours and consumes to increase it's own satisfaction.
I would hope that if I were to ever have children that this song would not be the one to remind them of me..

Gawwdd damn their voices are amazing 🤩🤩
All I can say is I WISH I HAD HER VOICE!!
Def one of the best songs I've ever heard!
I have a theory that A Cautionary Tale, The Mariners Revenge, and The Wanting Comes In Waves are the parts on one story of the Mother and the Mariner
Liam Peterson the wanting comes in waves is part of the story of the CD
Chronologically, A Cautionary Tale would probably come at the same time as the beginning of The Mariners Revenge, and The wanting comes in waves would be around the time when the mom dies in The Mariners Revenge, cause it says something about cradling mom when he has cancer, and then the Mariners Revenge would finish it up I think

what cool, imaginative illustrations! they went perfectly with the song!
I just wish they were in HD!
Does anyone think this would be an awesome musical short film, but with like Pans Labyrinth style?
My spouse told me that it was composed to accompany a play.

This song makes me of a selkie singing to their creator to be able to shed their pelt for the night.

Holy moly. Now this is how you respond to a piece of art.
What a coinkydink; I made a comment to that effect on a similar video earlier today.
I must say though, Ms Worden's range and variety are unequalled.

I have always been reminded of Grace Slick’s otherworldly voice when listening to this. So beautiful and epic.
Underrated. The whole album.
This song crushes me every time I hear it..
Listen to the hazards of love.
The album is like a story if you listen right and it all links together.
It’s a straight up rock opera. A dark arboreal fantasy of star crossed lovers and despicable villains. The Rake and The Queen are both epic.
That riff reminds me of Jason Forrest's War Photographer - and the two tunes share a little of the video style. Both are fucking awesome, which helps too.
Great song...
so this is what LSD is like.... I have to do this more often
This is beautiful. Thank you for sharing!
Possibly as the song is a mother and son talking to each other but hey, music is always open to new interpretation. :-) xx
Love the animation, and of course the song
triangles. So many triangles...
Clearly the hipsterz have been at this ;)
but don't get me wrong, I love this so much.
I know. At least give me a trapezoid or a good ol fashioned square. ;)
Your voice is awsome!!!!!!
It’s Shara Nova of My Brightest Diamond
This is music, damn it.
does anyone know where to watch the full album music video they made?
Spinning pyramids and ships,awesome...

how have I never heard this before... O_o
this is an excellent song, it captures so many moods... i love it :D

its alright as a song too tbh,and if it was a cat itd be a really beautiful cat.

Why did I not hear this song earlier?

Who did the visualization for this? Is it the official vid?
fennec foxes?

esa cancion me gusta
While I think this is a beautiful peice of animation, for a lot of parts I really feel that it didn't suit the music so well...
I'm pretty sure she's talking about shara worden
Is the continuing of the mariner revenge
Nah, but it is linked to the Rake's Song and, basically the entire album Hazards of Love is one big story, if you listen in order
is this sung by the mariner I wonder???
haha, wtf? If this song was a badger, it would be a fucking beautiful badger :P
