I think Peter Erskin has the same silky feel that Weckl has and I am pretty sure Erskine helped Dave get his career started@@tommysonnier9848 His playing here and everywhere is just staggeringly great.
Still mesmerized by Dave's playing. I cant quite point what it is he has more than others but his playing speaks to me like no other drummer does. Maybe its the fluidity and the dynamics or maybe it is that he never spends a ounce more than just the energy needed in each performance. That's why I call him Mr Smooth.
Same here. Watching and hearing him play at the same time is always fantastic. And as you said, I too can’t put my finger on it, what makes him extra special. Maybe it’s because he reached a level of perfection and that’s what we are witnessing.
Dave is in a small minority of the great jazz drummers who knows how to play with a big band. He has great dynamics and knows how to phrase with the horns, while keeping the time moving forward. And that is extremely difficult to do. Dave has done it smoothly every time. Thanks Dave for putting a big smile on my face. I thought I could play the drums until I heard you.

I recently read a beautiful old interview with Vinnie singing Dave's praises .. and Peter Erskine of course always talks about Dave. I think he genuinely shocked the drumming world when he came on the scene. He's that good.
Dave is one of the most fluid drummers I've ever seen play. No wasted movement; It looks like he's not even playing much. But at the incredible sound and melody belies this impression. This guy is truly art in motion, probably my favorite drummer of all time.

He did a seminar in my home town in 1985. Me and two drummer friends were 10 feet away from a guy we only heard of and he mesmerized the small crowd of drummers . He stopped after every song and explained everything he did like your own personal teacher. He was not arrogant but very on the level. I remember it like it was yesterday.
I've been watching you play for 40 + years. Your timing and technique have always been up there with the best. Your feel and taste have steadily improved to the point you've reached Buddy Rich status. Thanks for the entertainment.
Me and another younger drummer Robin Jönsson liked Billy Cobham but Robin told Me about an instruction video with Dave Weckl then We went home and practice to do the same things on the drumset with left and right hand just using the nearest hand to do things instead of cross the hands over the drumset. We learned play simply for ourselves but learned a lot from this "Master and King of Drums" Video. Thank You Dave from Me and Robin in Sweden!
I am born 1980. The Next Step was one of the first educational lessons that I ever saw around the age of 14. Oh my. Since then Weckl have had a place in my rhythm soul, although I am totally pop rock and heavy dude. To me Weckl is extremely smooth and at the same time quite furious. Those slpash-snare -accents, tom-bassdrum rolls and superb snarework... No one is like Dave. And sound. Always at high level.
I listen to my cirrius jazz station and I'm convinced that they do not know anything about the 'NEW' jazz that exists today. They live in the past, with all the greats from the Blue Note era but never people like Weckl or Simon Phillips and 'Protocol' or Hiromi. They need to get with today.

2/18/2024 Dave is simply Top Tier of All Time Greats. Been a fan for well over 40 Yrs. Had the pleasure to first hear Dave @ Sand Bar Cafe with his Band Nite Sprite. Simply a true Gentleman I had the pleasure of meeting. I played drums by ear for many years. Wanted to take lessons again for the third time since starting at age 8 Dave was kind enough to try to give me lessons. First thing he said was I didn't know anything Lol. I couldn't read music at that time. But he was patient and gave me some exercises to practice and work on independence. With all said it was a pleasure to have had the chance to spend a little time with simply one of the Greats. Thanks for all wonderful Music Dave and God Bless 🙏🏻
So much natural talent!! I play drums and I’m 58. I couldn’t even play close to how Dave plays!!! Just an amazing drummer and musician!!👍👍😁😁 I could only dream of playing this good!! And of course the amazing band!!!
What fluid playing he has always had! I remember seeing him give a clinic at a local high school in South Florida in the early 90's. He was so informative, thorough and it was almost three hours long and for only 7 or 8 dollars too. Such a professional even back in his early years of just starting out! Good job Dave and band!
After almost forty years Buddy and his music has finally returned! Many have tried and failed. Dave is only drummer on the planet who is truly worthy to fully honer Buddy`s charts. Mr Potter and his strange BR band becomes insignificant when compared to this.

My love of music began with the big bands of the late 50's. This is awesome!
I've seen several different versions of this song, including Buddy himself, but this is to me the most classy version I've ever seen of this song.
