Yeah, wow, Michael Rhodes grooves hard and his tone on bass is amazing. He can lay it down simple too like a master knows how to do. So happy to hear this cat play with Dave and Oz! How cool!
I dont mean to be off topic but does any of you know of a trick to get back into an Instagram account?? I stupidly forgot my account password. I appreciate any tips you can give me
I have Dave Weckl to thank for motivating me into taking drum lessons. A friend had suggested I go to see this guy. Well I'd never been to a drum clinic before & I'd never heard of this guy from the States before either. I went to see Dave at a drum clinic in Brisbane, Australia around about 1990. I was really, really impressed with how good he was. In question time I asked him. What were the steps you took to become such a good drummer? He replied - Taking drum lessons - learning to read music - learning drum rudiments & studying and becoming competent at (not just learning a little of) as many different genres of music & drumming styles as possible. The very next day I looked in the phone book & found Col Gillies Rudimental Drum School & took 2 lessons a week for about a year & a half. I then did a full time course at the Institute of Music in Sydney. So here's to you Dave. Thanks for those inspiring words at that clinic, I wouldn't be 1/5th as good a drummer, if I hadn't taken your advice that day :)
I have been looking up to for the pas 24 years of my drumming career and I am now 37. He is just one of kind - like Buddy Rich, Steve Smith, Steve Gadd, Vinny, etc. I have adapted my style and taste to music much to his.... it just makes sense to me....
Perhaps the reason you hadn't heard of this guy "from the States" before is that if you play anything fusion or even bordering fusion you spend a lot of time in Europe where the genre enjoys far greater popularity than it does in North America (and Australia, I assume) to my greatest dismay. Good thing the Montreal Jazz Festival and the Drum Fest attracts many of them but getting tickets is no mean feat. No Fest this year though, thanks to the pandemic and ensuing confinement regulations. Oh well, I'll survive (hopefully).
Yeh but the music industry is shit in Australia I took lessons with Milan troha at billy Hyde's in Surry hillsand did my performance degree at JMC and I now work in a commercial laundry I don't make a living of music the performance degree is a waste of time
I love how mr. Noy is as funky and groovy as a guitarplayer could ever dream of, yet nothing in the way he mooves suggests that he is doing anything more funky, than solving a word-puzzle.
+Reagan Moreno There's no doubt about it that Dave Weckl has some great skills lets be honest still. Best drummer? Maybe, but it truly depends on ones taste in style.
Weckl's unbelievable! Saw him in clinic years ago and he blew us away with his left hand technique. He has such command of the kit. Smooth and creative.
Mister Weckl - this IZZZZ simply OUT FAKKKKKING STANDING. Everytime I listen to this cut, see your profesional moves - leaves me breathless! Thanks for being around, Dave, you OWE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love this guitarist man...very inventive with the rotary accents, etc...not to mention he's got some pretty filthy bop style chops in his back pocket
+manifestgtr Unfortunately, It seems way too many people still don't know who Oz Noy is. I think to the uneducated listener (not you), his "disjointed" sound turns them off but if you listen very closely you can hear the fusing of several styles. I think he lulls people in with his heavy blues influence and then he smacks them into submission with his nasty Funk & Jazz licks never mind the solos. Yea, he's very much overlooked.
This is absolutely without a doubt what the original Traditional Grip is all about absolutely astonishing with the left hand speaking softly with ghost notes thru out this this beautiful composition all so very smoothly with hands floating thru the air like butterfly wings so cool & graceful like a true Master as he sits down on a Masterpiece 2 the Drum Set his canvas & his sticks painting a very lovely picture of so much brilliance with impeccable & outstanding Artistry, Skill, Focus & Workmanship. This my friends is what the true nature & definition of what playing a real Drum Set is all about because they are your voice while your hands are doing the speaking 2 all those that want 2 listen 2 what TUBS are really all about. Bada Bing - Bada Boom!!! 🥁
+Cristiano Mosti One of the modern greats that easily gets overlooked. He truly has his own sound and fuses styles like a beast. Just when think he doesn't necessarily know what he's doing... *wham*
Dave just blows me away every time. This tune really show's off his ability to build thousands of solos, that groove like hell and allowing for each to sound a little different than the last. He is and always will be my Jazz hero!
I would not say this was jazz, more fusion. This grooves rather than swings. Also I would say this is more of a rock signature in time. I listen to jazz under duress and really just for the drums but I would listen to this for pleasure. It has all the great musicianship that jazz musicians bring but without the annoying jazz. This is the sort of stuff I used to go to Ronnie Scott's to listen. Reminds me a little like the drumming on some later Miles Davis albums. The early albums were also great for drumming but I did not like the music that much but the later stuff was much better with more hi hat snare based rock beats rather than the annoying cymbal triplets of jazz.
It's great to see Dave Weckl just laying a straight rock groove and then letting the Dave Weckl come out at the end and then do what he does like no one else....He's one of a kind!
Still the best drummer alive imo. I just don't see or hear anyone better. His technique is flawless, so smooth. effortless. It's a joy to watch. Thanks Dave
I know a lot of those guys and agree that they are great, let's not forget Vinnie, but Dave does something to me that the others don't, I can't figure it out, maybe it is his intense groove. But I could listen to him all day long. I am not even a drummer I am a rock guitarist, but when i was young I really wanted to play the drums but my parents wouldn't buy me a kit. So i play a little bit but can seriously appreciate great drummers.
***** I think the teacher you're talking about, the one who changed Weckl's grip and drumming style, is Freddie Gruber. Weckl still plays pretty elliptically however, he just chooses his moments better in the latter half of his career, and plays more time than he did before.
Very gifted drummer; Dave seriously pushes the envelope in Fusion/Jazz drumming and truly set the bar very high. I am saying this as an educated drummer who has been playing for approximately 50 years now.
gonna miss his pockets, he played with all my favorites, Robben Ford, Vince Gill, so many like here - the best in concerts too. from Louisiana originally~
I can actually hear a real improvement in his play since his Chick Corea / French Toast days even the way he holds his sticks has changed for the better. this guy just keeps on working and improving.
Only 3-4 mins of solo but one of best I've heard from him, and backed up brilliantly by a great guitar and bass groove. Every drummer is different (and how cool is that) but Wecksy is the only one who for me most closely resembles a drumming volcano: he builds and builds and builds his solos and then completely explodes the last 2 mins in a way that makes my jaw dislocate itself from its socket and drop to the floor. There's no pain, just wonder and pure fist-in-the-air I-want-more joy. This solo one is no exception. Masterful.
Mr. Weckl a real force from nature, an artist on music, sound, time perception and full nuances of performance... Mr. Weckl is a live archetype of contemporary drum playing. Always evolving and inspiring us. A really Mthrfckr from the excelence.
Why is it when I watch him,I feel like I never had any business picking up a pair of sticks..& I hate to even say it ...considering myself a "drummer " at one time. I was in simple addition..Guy's like this are dabbling in complex mathematical theory, kinda takes the fun out of it when they perform at levels like this.
Tjfreak I'd have to agree. I get the same feeling and can't really consider myself a drummer, even though I know it's not the correct way to think. Imagine if he saw someone like himself when he wasn't good and got discouraged? He'd never make it to where he is now.
FesliyanStudios I 100% disagree. I used to play solely cover music until I started listening to bands where I rhythmically couldn't understand even the hook of their songs. It inspired me to use drums as the medium of musical understanding. I know that sounds kindof pretentious, and I'm not going to sit on my throne and say I can play anything close to the shed he played, or even understand some parts; but I will say that is part of the journey. Expand what you can play into what you can't, and you can start on the process of understanding what the greats are playing. I am not there yet, but I happily accept that there is a long way to go, and all the while playing the music to get there is worth the time I have to put in practicing technique.
Dave Weckl's was the first drum clinic I attended, I was completely blown away by his technique and musicality. He's my favorite drummer ever since. Studied his methods and videos. Effortless technique, chops and groove for years. #drumgoals
I've listened to Dave since I was 4. I could recognize his sweet fills if he were playing a mile away, during a thunderstorm, on a train, and the train was filled with gun violence.
dave still has been adding wisdom to the drum conversation. love this dude's music. listen to it and then open your eyes and see how easy it is for him.
Watched this so many times, and have been so fortunate to see Oz and Dave both together and apart many times. Dave is by far the most musical drummer on the planet for his genre (I would say Vinnie has a slight edge in versatility). But just watch Dave in this video when he supports Oz in his solo...just fills it in with more cymbal and snare fills as Oz progressively takes it up several notches, and every beat in place-incredible. Then there's the drum solo...
Saw Weckl at Jazz Alley in Seattle a few years back. He was playing with a good group but we specifically came for Weckl. Got there late but to our surprise the last couple tables still available were the closest tables to the drum kit. It was amazing watching him jam from just a couple feet away. Talked to him a bit after the show too. Nice guy
If you can't feel this groove it might be you who has no feel... Dave has an extensive background in latin drumming which is to me the most feel orientated music inside its complexity...
What's that "mullet" thing in the US? It certainly does not fit everyone but (to us europeans) it's just another hair cut, albeit quite strongly associated with the late 1980s.
Alright, here goes, from 4:02 on: GROOVE (4:02) 4/4 4/4 4/4 2/4 (Accent last 16th) PRE-SOLO BREAK (4:11) 4/4 (Accent last 16th) 4/4 SOLO LOOP 1 (4:16) 4/4 (Accent 2nd 16th) 7/8 4/4 4/4 (Accent last 16th) SOLO LOOP RINSE & REPEAT (4:26) 4/4 4/4 4/4 4/4 (Accent last 16th) SOLO LAST LOOP (5:59) 4/4 4/4 4/4 9/8 (you didn't want that 7/8 from 2 minutes ago unresolved, right? :) PRICELESS SMILE (6:14) Also, the man has balls the size of a skyscraper.
I used to see Dave in Westport Connecticut at the Westport Yacht Club with the band Nightsprite....he was just a kid..(so was I)...what a monster talent and a heck of a nice guy....the stuff with Chick Corea, Pattituci, and Gambale is truly astounding.....thanks Dave for so many years of good vibes and GREAT drumming...
Søren Nielsen Gavin is great and can be spoken of in the same breath as Weckl, but Portnoy? Seriously? Portnoy is a good drummer but he's not in Weckl's league!
Weckl... beneath? did you actually watch this video or any other of Weckl? Theres a 3 way drum battle between Calaiuta, Weckl, and Gadd on here somewhere and Weckl makes the other 2 guys look like run of the mill intermediate players. I don't want to get into arguments over exactly who is better than whom, but Harrison and Portnoy are great drummers in a totally different sense of the word. Weckl is the master and commander of feel, time, and chops. Portnoy has interesting arrangements and is good at odd timing, Harrison has a cool feel and also is good at strange polyrhythms, but neither of those guys have the total Weckl package.
Can a fish climb a tree or can a monkey swim like a fish. Can we compare the both. Every drummer is unique an has there own style. Enjoy their differences.
I've been listening to Dave for 25 years and he still makes me sick. So clean and tasteful. Top 5 of my list.
+Irwin Wins so much coolness and control
+Irwin Wins Curious: Who are the other 4? ;)
Irwin I completely agree. One of the best and with good reason. Well said 😉
Jonp
Gonna take a guess and throw Colaiuta in
@@AChadWardenProduction for sure!
People are all talking about Weckl and Oz Noy, but man Michael Rhodes is laying it down on that bass. Dude is a total beast.
Michael he’s so nasty on bass! Love watching him play with Joe Bonomassa too!
Yeah, wow, Michael Rhodes grooves hard and his tone on bass is amazing. He can lay it down simple too like a master knows how to do. So happy to hear this cat play with Dave and Oz! How cool!
Peoples are talking about Michael Rhodes but they would sound so much fuller with a Rhodes organ player backing this up

Not as good as Monkey Harris in 1909 who had a kit like 2 biscuit tins on a stick, he also had coconuts as cymbals....

I keep coming back to this version. - It is the best take ever.
All three musicians here are MONSTERS. This is awesome.
Every time I hear/see Weckl play I'm left with a mixture of awe, joy, jealousy, and profound admiration for his immense talent. What a BEAST
Agreed :o
Same here. Well put.
Still listen to this every once in a while. Love this recording!
absolutely mind blowing... Dave blew the house down... wow!
Dave's mesmerizing ability to keep us at the edge of our screens just to see what he does next, unbelievable drummer. Simply the BEST!
The more I listen the more i realize the greatness off Dave Weckl's playing. his drumming style is so smooth.
Just happened to discover Oz Noy. Awesome musician!
I hate it when people start drum debates about who's the best drummer. People, shut up and enjoy the music.
Reagan Moreno PREACH IT
Reagan Moreno Finally, someone with actual sense.
+Reagan Moreno maybe that's how they enjoy music
+Reagan Moreno YAY! :)
+Reagan Moreno There's no doubt about it that Dave Weckl has some great skills lets be honest still. Best drummer? Maybe, but it truly depends on ones taste in style.
Dave's music just keeps getting better and better as the years go by a consummate musician like his peers in drumming and other musicians

Cristiano Mosti, one of my favourite Oz solos. So cool.

Same! He does something similar on the solo for "Slap Happy" by Brian Bromberg. Another excellent solo and song.
After seeing Dave play several times, he has motivated me to take the drums a step further!! Great drummer for sure!!!
Good for you Thomas...💪
Still the best drummer alive imo. I just don't see or hear anyone better. His technique is flawless, so smooth. effortless. It's a joy to watch. Thanks Dave
Mr. Weckl Owns the place!!! Awesome groove and admirable performance! Much respect!

RIP Michael Rhodes😢, what a loss of a great musician.🙏🙏🙏

Played in college with Dave. He was a monster then, and he's even a bigger monster now.
Weckl's gotta be one of the most versatile and tasteful drummers around... a real groove-master.
Only 3-4 mins of solo but one of best I've heard from him, and backed up brilliantly by a great guitar and bass groove. James Garnett it even got a smile out of him, he (they) were THAT good with the syncopated interplay.
Most epic weckl solo possibly ever! Thanks!
This one of Weckl's best performances. These three guys sounds so good together.
Mr. Weckl a real force from nature, an artist on music, sound, time perception and full nuances of performance... Mr. Weckl is a live archetype of contemporary drum playing. Always evolving and inspiring us. A really Mthrfckr from the excelence.
Why is that that when I watch Dave Weckl, I feel like he has the most relaxed and easy to play technique.(that's a good thing!)
Why is it when I watch him,I feel like I never had any business picking up a pair of sticks..& I hate to even say it ...considering myself a "drummer " at one time. Probably because he has the most relaxed and easy to play technique ^^

As always, great job, Mr. Weckl.
i came here to watch dave weckl (and he was awesome here) but man oz noy and rhodes killed it too.
Lars Zingler Couldn't agree more.
4:55 - 5:04 is so smooth and rapid, it's briliant. Those accents driven by lighting single and double strokes!
What's crazy is Dave said his main rudiments are singles, doubles, paradiddles and flams.
So clean and groovy!
Dave Weckl's was the first drum clinic I attended, I was completely blown away by his technique and musicality. He's my favorite drummer ever since. Studied his methods and videos. Effortless technique, chops and groove for years. #drumgoals
That drum solo was one of the best I've seen Dave put together.
He develops the theme so well.
I love the face people put when Dave shreds the kit,,,,,just awsome.
I've listened to Dave since I was 4. I could recognize his sweet fills if he were playing a mile away, during a thunderstorm, on a train, and the train was filled with gun violence.
haha...me too man!
Dave is the 2nd best drummer in the whole wide world and i love and admire that man more than life.
I never use this word (I'm 44) but: Sick. I can't relate to how effortless Weckl is on the drums. All power to him.
dave still has been adding wisdom to the drum conversation. love this dude's music. listen to it and then open your eyes and see how easy it is for him.
Oz Noy is a musical genius !
Love this channel so much, and how they support young drummers. I am 15yo and have been playing since I was 7.. Thank you Vic Firth!
Dave you are a BEAST!
the beast in their shoulders, ##aka60
Dave Weckl is the master of finess. Just amazing
Dave is my default Drummer, He is always tasteful and clean. He makes me feel it every time !
Have loved Weckl's playing ever since I first heard him in '81. Bad cat then, badder cat now. This is a dream trio.
It seems to me that Weckl just gets better every time he plays. Which means that whenever you hear him, it'll be him playin the best he ever played.

An outstanding performance from the three
Greatest drummer of all time. Hands down.
Hmmmmm It's art, not sports my friend...
Dave is amazing. And he's still grooving.
I've been a fan of Weckl ever since I heard Inside Out with the Chick Corea Elektric Band, awesome drumming as usual, a big inspiration for me
The perfect combination of soul and sophistication!
Dave Weckl= best drummer ever
Well that was very nearly 7 minutes of awesome. Thanks.
Awesome, proper bona fide musicians rocking out... there's nothing better:-).
Saw Weckl at Jazz Alley in Seattle a few years back. He was playing with a good group but we specifically came for Weckl. Got there late but to our surprise the last couple tables still available were the closest tables to the drum kit. It was amazing watching him jam from just a couple feet away. I was there too!
Saw Steve Smith and VI there as well as The Hiromi Trio which was just a blow away in 2011.
I haven't heard anyone who quite does it like weckyl
+craig hajwan Agreed.
I like weckl but he's annoying because he's too perfect of a drummer :D
+Ville Halkosalmi - Such a strange criticism. :-)
I agree. More is not always better. Absolute drum perfection leads to flawless rithm machines. Where is room for the feelings?
Ville Halkosalmi hyvä kommentti !

Quel monstre de précision, de netteté et de créativité. Pas un coup que l'on pourrait critiquer. La perfection.
When technique barrier doesn't exist anymore , and musical skills talk . Dave is an awesome musician . ( same for Vinnie )
COOL!!!!!!!!! thanks a lot!!!!!!! Dave Weckl!!!!!!!!!!!!! Best wishes from Bolivia!!!!!!
Amazing how smooth his hands can flow always in control, makes ya wanna throw me drums out the window
Nice to see Dave playing some straight ahead stuff. Loved his playing for years.. Excellent. Thanks
love how the guitarist becomes his own rhythm guitarist during his lead via his effects pedal (@ 1:28)
It never gets old!!!!!!
I want to play stuff like this!
Don't we all want to play this stuff? ;P
Awesome trio!!
that solo bit is hard to keep catching those accents, he makes it look easy.
Awesome Trio, Oz Noy is truly a amazing, thanks for sharing
Right around 5:10 Dave starts one of his "Direct Connection to the Percussive God's" solos. This guy really can float above the music. Incredible.
That is absolutely, positively insane.
Thanks for this vd,,,Magnificent musicians !
I feel really stupid for ignoring this guy for so long cause he had a mullet
+romjab the mullet was a crime, but they let him out for great drum behavior
+romjab lol!
The mullet of Dave was exceptional by any standards. But thankfully he denounced it.
What's that "mullet" thing in the US? It certainly does not fit everyone but (to us europeans) it's just another hair cut, albeit quite strongly associated with the late 1980s.
i love mullets
This is so inspiring. I just wish we could hear his ghost notes. Dave weckl and Omar Hakim Dave waka and Omar Hakeem are my drumming superheroes.

Wow. Dave Weckl's freakin amazing as always. And Oz, you have been evolving as a player a ton! I'm blown away.
oz noy is a monster!
Thanks for sharing, One of my favorite drummers.....makes it look so easy!

Also, the man has balls the size of a skyscraper.
4:37 that floor tom fill is too tasty
+羅子翔 Damnnnn!
I like his triplets on his solo. Well played and have feeling
Dave, still one of the best out there! you're playing is so fluid! love your playing man
weckl is probably the best drummer alive right now. dude is just not capable of playing something that doesn't sound perfect.
He´s almost as good as Mike Portnoy and Gavin Harrison. Love his sexy groove :)
Søren Nielsen LOL! Portnoy... HA!
Søren Nielsen Gavin is great and can be spoken of in the same breath as Weckl, but Portnoy? Seriously?
Portnoy is a good drummer but he's not in Weckl's league!
Well, Portnoy is on the same level as Gavin. And Weckl is great, but he is beneath them both
Weckl... beneath? did you actually watch this video or any other of Weckl? Theres a 3 way drum battle between Calaiuta, Weckl, and Gadd on here somewhere and Weckl makes the other 2 guys look like run of the mill intermediate players. I don't want to get into arguments over exactly who is better than whom, but Harrison and Portnoy are great drummers in a totally different sense of the word. Weckl is the master and commander of feel, time, and chops. Portnoy has interesting arrangements and is good at odd timing, Harrison has a cool feel and also is good at strange polyrhythms, but neither of those guys have the total Weckl package.
Fantastic to see this live at PASIC!
Great sounding drums :'o
+Jens Z No. Great sounding drummer... !:)
+Szab S. Yeah he's amazing ^^
one of my fav dave videos out there!
Can a fish climb a tree or can a monkey swim like a fish.
Can we compare the both.
Every drummer is unique an has there own style.
Enjoy their differences.
well said...
All of them are fish dude, only different species :) Some can jump, some swim faster, some survive on land.
Dave ..... Lovin' It !!!
