    ━━━━━━━━Battle INFO 📜
The Battle of Borodino was a battle fought on 7 September 1812 in the Napoleonic Wars during the French invasion of Russia.
The fighting involved around 250,000 troops and left at least 70,000 casualties, making Borodino the deadliest day of the Napoleonic Wars. Napoleon's Grande Armée launched an attack against the Russian army, driving it back from its initial positions but failing to gain a decisive victory. Both armies were exhausted after the battle and the Russians withdrew from the field the following day. Borodino represented the last Russian effort at stopping the French advance on Moscow, which fell a week later. However, the French had no clear way of forcing Czar Alexander to capitulate because the Russian army was not decisively defeated, resulting in the ultimate defeat of the French invasion following the retreat from Moscow in October.
After a series of Russian retreats at the beginning of the campaign, the nobility grew alarmed about the advancing French troops and forced the Czar to dismiss the army's commander, Barclay de Tolly. Mikhail Kutuzov was appointed as his replacement. In a final attempt to save Moscow, the Russians made a stand near the village of Borodino, west of the town of Mozhaysk. They fortified their positions and waited for the French to attack. The Russian right wing occupied ideal defensive terrain, so the French tried to press the Russian left for much of the battle.
The highlight of the fighting became the bloody struggle for the large Raevsky redoubt near the village of Borodino. The French managed to capture this redoubt late into the day, gradually forcing the rest of the Russian army to pull back as well. The Russians suffered terrible casualties during the fighting, losing over a third of their army. French losses were also heavy, exacerbating the logistical difficulties that Napoleon encountered in the campaign. The exhaustion of the French forces, and the lack of information on the condition of the Russian army, persuaded Napoleon to remain on the battlefield with his army instead of ordering the kind of vigorous pursuit reminiscent of previous campaigns.[9]
Napoleon's Imperial Guard, the only unit on the battlefield that saw no fighting, was available to swing into action at a moment's notice. In refusing to commit the Guard, some historians believe, he lost his one chance to destroy the Russian army and to win the campaign.[10]
The capture of Moscow proved a pyrrhic victory, since the Russians had no intention of negotiating with Napoleon for peace. The French evacuated Russia's spiritual capital in October and conducted a difficult retreat that lasted until December, by which point the remainder of the Grande Armée had largely unraveled. Historical reports of the battle differed significantly depending on whether they originated from supporters of the French or Russian side. Factional fighting among senior officers within each army also led to conflicting accounts and disagreements over the roles of particular officers.

This battle took me ages to beat on hard/ v.hard.
When I finally beat it, I literally had just 1 unit left. I was genuinely concerned it wouldn’t be enough to knock the last arty piece off the central hill.

Slow the game down. When youre learning just pause the game every ten seconds if you have to, nobody is watching, take all the time you need. Zoom in, observe whats happening, survey the battle field, issue some orders, think them over, re-do them, then play the game for 10-20 seconds in the slowest time setting possible. Pause the game, scroll over to another area of the battle and see whats happening, unpause in slow time, pause again and keep looking over the entire battle.
Spend some time looking over the field itself, look for hills with good vantage points you can put artillery on. Look for choke points.
Zoom in all the way to ground level with your cannon units and look around, see the view they will have, see if you can hit targets or if there are hills in your way, even small hills can deflect cannon balls. In this battle for example, he didnt do that, he deployed his 12lb artillery and ordered it to fire at the enemy but the cannons dont actually have clear shots at the enemy where they are. Later in the video you see the cannon balls missing because their line of sight is obstructed. To be fair, in this battle your slow 12 lb artillery is almost useless anyway, if you try and move it to a better position their freaking Unicorn cannons blow it to shit because those shoot explosive shells at an arch, so they can shoot up over hills when your cannons dont even have a clear shot.
Artillery from long distance is alright, using solid round shot to pick off some advancing enemy infantry, usually try to destroy the enemies artillery, but the real gravy is cannister shot up close. Deploy a cannon, put 1 unit of line infantry on both sides of it, so when the AI marches up to engage your line infantry your cannon fills the communist scum with lead!
Might be a good idea to leave a cavalry unit around your cannons if you have them all in the same area. The enemy will look for an opportunity to charge in and take our your cannons, having cavalry nearby to repel them is a good idea.
Dont try to manage the entire battle all at once on full speed right away. You need to get familiar with how long units can hold the line in battle, how long it takes to fire volleys, how long it takes to shift troops into another position etc. At first you dont have any of this timing down, so youre frantically looking around to see who is where and whos doing what, then you miss a crucial 5 seconds where cavalry just rode straight into your boys.
It doesnt take long, slowly you pause the game less and less. Once you know the timing of things, it becomes second nature. You dont even need think about it. Youll just move some troops, then scroll away and theres this subconscious timer in the back of your head, you know itll take those guys about 2 min to get to where you want them so you know you have time.
As for tactics, theyre simple. Line infantry forms lines, you dont want the enemy to get behind your line or break through the line. You want to get around the back of your enemies line. So use your line infantry as cannon fodder.
Use the light infantry with longer range on the edge of your lines. Use them to envelop the edge of your enemies line. while their line infantry is facing your line infantry, send another unit and try to fire at the side of them. This is called flanking. Always try and flank the enemy. Even if you cant do a full 90 degree flanking, just angle two units of line infantry facing one of the enemies.
Keep cavalry at the sides of your army. Maybe keep 1 or 2 in the middle behind your line infantry. These arent for extended fighting like your line infantry. These are for making quick, decisive attacks. So you generally keep them safe behind your line infantry and wait for the best time to use them.
You see an opening to the enemies artillery? Send your cavalry in for a charge.
Try to get cavalry behind the enemies line, charging into the back or the side of enemy units is gnarly. Send your line infantry into a bayonet charge, then use your cavalry to charge into the back of them.
If you have an infantry unit exposed and you see the enemy cavalry might be getting ready to swoop in, put them in square formation.
The enemy will try to do this to you, which is why you keep your cavalry for moments like this, either a quick charge to end the battle or a counter charge.
Dont leave your cavalry fighting for long periods of time, they do the most damage during the initial charge and imapact. ESPECIALLY lancers. As soon as the lancers collide with the enemy, give them orders to disengage and form up a little ways away to charge again.. This is called cycle charging. Trying to charge over and over for max bonus. The melee cavalry, like cuirassiers can do some extended melee... theyre the ones with swords and metal chest plates. Theyre "heavy" cavalry.
The lancers are "shock" cavalry, send them in for quick attacks to "shock" the enemy and cause them to panic and route.
Light cavalry are good for chasing down an enemy thats faltering, and make sure they break 100% and wont come back.
One thing I like to do is view my army from the enemies perspective.
Usually we are looking at the enemies position from our point of view, but sometimes you notice things you might not have when you scroll behind your enemy line and look at your soldiers. This way you can think how you would defend if you were the enemy. Then you can figure out where they are vulnerable.

Keep in mind, the AI cheats and can manage every single unit with 100's of commands/second. It will outmicro you any time of the day. The pause button is your friend.

This looks too easy. Next time try it on hard level. Unicorns will destroy your artillery in couple of minutes and smash a lot of your infantry before you make first shots.

You have to manually tell the infantry to form square. Assuming this is AI controlling the enemy, AI in Napoleon doesn’t like to form square. This is a 2012 game after all. AI wasn’t really the smartest.

"Historical " 😂😅 you did what every total war game is won by : enveloping the flanks around.
Napoleon won this battle by a frontal attack, not flanking. Of course as a ntw player myself i know the morale system in this game is very flunky so the troops would prob surrender if you sent them straight on
