    If Sloane is mentally all there in a match, she is probably one of the smartest players.
    She has the game to be very aggressive when playing against the best defensive players and a superb defense when against top notch power players. She's able to stay in so many rallies with her great foot speed and either allows that to draw the error of her opponent or allows her to pounce upon an open opportunity with her forehand.
    Hopefully she stays healthy all season to continue this run. She literally has no points to defend all clay season and most of grass season. She plays great on clay as well. She could be top 5 if she racks up enough points.

    • @ilovetati91
      @ilovetati91 6 лет назад +4

      Not true, K FF. She was very aggressive in every other match this event. She was smart to reel it in for this match and play more defensively.

      She played really smart tennis. She can't outhit or be more aggressive than Ostapenko so she used her athleticism and hit deep but still strong shots with big targets. She rode out Ostapenko's ups and downs.

      KarlMalowned32 this is exactly the style of play that got her last Venus at last year’s US Open semi. Venus was in great physical shape but in the third set Sloan refused to let any of Venus’s balls get by her and caused Venus to hit over 60 UE and subsequently lose. Venus tried her best to hit through Sloan but Sloan was a human wall that day and all tournament long.

      Superior athleticism (speed/body strength) is key to Ms Stephens (defense) success. Of course there are (mainly) many differences, but at least in this regard, I see similarities also to Justine Henin`s game.

    My read on Sloane is, she is as talented an athlete as one can be in the WTA today. And since her breakout moment at the US Open, she and her team know this. But she embodies what I think is the hallmark of today's athlete and just people in general. Efficiency is the standard. Everyone wants to expend the least amount of effort and get the most output. Sloane to me is ostensibly targeting specific tournaments to excel at because the work load involved in order to win tournaments consistently is tremendous. Maybe unbearable even. Because you have to immolate the other aspects of your life. This workload while still immense, is manageable in the schedule she has adopted. So watch out for her performances in Grand Slams and Premier Events that are based in the US. Good for her. 👌

    A true example of "Dance like a butterfly, sting like a bee". I always find myself cheering for Sloane even though she plays like she'd rather be reading a book on neurosurgery than exercise. Though I do admit that strong defensive players drive most of us nuts by forcing us to hit 4 "winners" to win a point, Sloane can go hard, too, when necessary. In this match, her speed n ability to place a defensive ball deep are impressive. Mentally though, giving the ball deep right back to Penko like it's a forehand rally drill until a good ball comes up basically says: "Hey, knock yourself out...keep donating till it hurts.... you're the one with the one-dimensional game, not me" lol

    Sloane has a game I can’t say I enjoy watching because it’s so lackadaisical, but I respect her. I also like that she is a shot maker. She can play aggressive but she also has a way of getting her opponent in the position she wants before making a winner that’s with extremely high margin. She reminds me of Hingis sometimes. Im glad to see the next generation of girls : Osaka,Ostapenko, Stephens, Keys. Now who will stay consistent ?

      Sloane has to prove she can win outside of the US and on a surface other than a hardcourt. I think Osaka is closer to a Serena style of play than Sloane. Sloane has a bit too much of a defensive mentality on the court. Her serves are also close to half the speed of Serena's.

    • @b.u.dmusic9424
      @b.u.dmusic9424 6 лет назад +2

      Ramon Galvez : Naomi Osaka has more upside to me than Sloane Stephens but in the end I think that Sloane will be the natural successor to Serena and Venus Williams Because Sloane knows how to adjust her game proponent better than Naomi does. But as far as physical abilities are concerned, Sloane Stephens has it over on her

      Also agree, a major Congratulations to Sloane Stephens. She is a wonderful competitor with a pleasant attitude, a likable person. Am very glad to see more women on the WTA tour rising to high levels. Still enjoy seeing Venus and Serena play. Each brings a high level to the game, competition, and the game of tennis. It is always nicer to me to see more competitors. Serena said it recently how others have raised their level and also causes her level to increase too. It seems to me, We are seeing a significant increase in the number of high level women players, both in the younger, and more experienced players on tour. Many of the players on tour have raised their own level to compete with Serena, Venus, the younger players, like Angelina Kerber, Caroline Wosniaki, Simone Halep, Garbiñe Marguruza. Seems We are also seeing something similar in the ATP men's tour too but more from the more experienced players and the continuance of great ones too.
      Sports to me, has mostly been about the endeavor of development, rising, and achievement of athletic performance, excellence and greatness. often involving the.tests of the limits of physical, mental and emotional aspects of humans. Tennis, specifically has some uniqueness in the combination of all of these together.
      {am also an athletic type, wuth tennis as one of my most enjoyable]

    • @newtonfirefly3584
      @newtonfirefly3584 5 лет назад

      True, Sloane's serve is not quite at the level of Serena, but frankly, who else but Venus has the power Serena has in her serve [and Serena's is generally more powerful]?!
      Sloane has significantly improved her serve in the recent years. Her good friend Madison Keys or Coco Vandeweghe may have more powerful serves, but that is not always the determining factor or element. Naomi Osaka seems to have a powerful serve, and apparently the player she looked up to most is Serena. We can see many great players have been and are champions without the necessity of a powerful serve. Sloane does have a good elements in all aspects of her game with some being weapons. Each player has their own unique set, and Sloane is a fine example.

    Sloane played very smart tennis. She knows Ostapenko's game is one of aggression and power. So she played a lot of those balls deep. And it didn't offer Ostapenko too many opportunities to finish off points as comfortably as we've seen her done throughout this tournament.
    That said, congrats to both players. Well done, Sloane!

    Best strategy against Ostapenko is to let her defeat herself. Due to her large unforced errors, if you don't make unforced errors on your side, just push the ball little deep, you will eventually win. Need some patience to do that. Sloane executed this strategy very well as I think. Congrats!

    Very remarkable how Sloane's has changed after she came back from her injury time out. Probably it has to do with maturity. She has become one of the most formidable defenders in the women game, moving around the court with relative ease, yet always ready to go into offense. She used to be flatfooted and mostly aggressive, racking up unforced errors. You need both defense and offense to become a champion. Her game frustrated Ostapenko as she was always bringing back the ball one more time.

      Yes it's an interesting situation. She is a power player and she can dominate most players just doing what she does. Stephens' incredible athleticism and defense were too much for her, so maybe she needs some other tactics when playing her. Stephens looked awfully good out there. But so did Osty.

    A very good tactical win by Sloane, she moved well and soaked up the hard hit balls which floated back and eventually an error was made by Jelena. I think Jelena should have followed in some of those hard shots to the net and then with an angled volley she could’ve finished the point.

    Just how annoying is it to see the thumbnail showing the winner?! For goodness sake, please let us watch the highlights with at least a little suspense.

    More impressive than us open. She beat the top players in women's tennis all in a row. We'll see later about Serena.

    Oh, consider viewing Sloane Stephens as a unique player of her own. Though, yes We can find some similarities of here abilities and performance to other great players, We can see as she has developed, She has a unique style of her own. It seems to me, her present coach continues to work with Sloane in what works well for Sloane to be her best. We have seen Sloane improve in many areas over the years, and she seems to still be developing and growing in her game and success. Am glad to see a pleasant, likable young woman as Sloane to continue to grow and achieve. She brings many good talents, abilities and behavior to the WTA, and the world and game of tennis.

    Ostapenko reminded me of Madison Keys today, baseball bashing her way to a loss. All Scone had to do was keep the ball in play.

      Ostapenko is a brilliant player. Keys is also quite good.

      Keys is better than Ostapenko, they’ve played each other on grass a much faster surface which they both like and keys beat her in the final... team keys all the way. As for Sloane I don’t doubt she’ll lose form again I don’t like her personality on the court just cause a lot of the time it looks like she’d rather be anywhere else but she’s pretty good at running down shots doesn’t hit with pace most of the time which throws most players off

      Albert Hernandez Keys has zero slams and Ostapenko is MORE consistent. Ostapenko has a slam.

    I'd like to see more aggression in Sloane Stephens' game. Stepping in on the second serve and not playing so far behind the baseline. Ostapenko has an aggressive style however she is very erratic. I believe Sloane can find the right balance. Next stop is the European clay court season. Is Sloane capable of playing on clay and winning outside of the US?

      tjrtt ... Sloane is a very smart player, she didn't need to be aggressive against Ostapenko. Sloane has power and can be aggressive, she is a very rounded player with great defense skills, one of the best forehands in the game. Sloane has 6 titles, a 6-0 record in finals, she won in Brisbane and Acapulco, get the facts before you criticize... winning at home is not as easy as you and others think, there's added expectation to perform well at home, encouragement motivates but it doesn't play the game, the player does.
