"She could fall over just from the dust accumulating on her." At this point in the video, I turn to my Transformers cabinet to see Airachnid having fallen back into Prime FE Starscream, who, in turn, has fallen into Prime Dreadwing. Statement is completely accurate.
the one time we could have used a legion upscale, THEY WORK FROM SCRATCH! seriously, make it well-painted, not all hollow like bumblebee, and the upscale could have been great in this case.
Rewatching this in 2020, it just occured to me that the designers could've severely improved her head articulation if they'd just designed the cockpit seat to fold downward as part of the transformation
In the show, she actually was a triple changer. Spider, Chopper, Robot. That's why I knew there was no way for them to make a good toy version that could satisfy all 3 modes. But I never expected anything this bad.
The spider mode is actually just her legs folded into themselves, and then balancing her on top of her spider legs, that just hang behind her robot mode. It is not difficult to pull that off.
Honestly I kind of thought of her spider mode as a half transformation that we've seen in various reboots such as the current Travis Knight Live Action Movies
Hot Slag! Did they really Botch this one up! But in all serious, she may not be combat worthy, But her Tennis racket/lobster claw does maker pursuit her dream of being the first Cybertronian Tennis player!
Kaoslord the head could be used for a custom, heck, if someone has a 3D scanner then they could make a larger version of it and then enlarge the base body to be modded
On the note of Airachnids alt-mode, and this is more on behalf of the show and not so much the toy, but... How she scanned Fowlers Huey and came out with a Comanche is anyones guess.
Yes. Arcee was good. Windblade at least looked good. Chromia was good too. Generations could probably do an amazing airachnid. (if they abandoned any kind of combining that is.)
If they did, it'd probably be a retooling of that DAMNED Alpha Bravo mold. Just like they're using it for Blades, Vortex and the two members of Victorion.
+thunderstudent But far from show accurate for Airachnid. While I agree that she needs a better figure like the good Doctor KO, I don't think it should be during the Combiner Wars line
I will agree that there were quite a few figures from Prime's line that bombed. Optimus Maximus was more or less a dud. I gave it points for at least doing what it said it could on the box. Plus it had a really cool gun. Glad to see you're back to punishing bad plastic!
I generally like it when a Transformers figure is able to work in a functioning interior for the vehicle mode. Especially when it's not Masterpiece, Alternator/Binaltech, or Human Alliance when that's not a normal feature of the toy line. However in this particular case where the gimmick of a functioning cockpit hinders the robot mode so badly... they should of sacrificed it for a better robot mode. It's nice to add when at all possible but don't design the entire toy around it, not at this scale anyway.
I believe this was the third Prime figure I bought after Bumblebee and Soundwave. And to this day I can admit to it being one of my favorites due to how bad it is. Except the head, I love the head sculpt. Shame one of the better characters in the show got such a horrendous brick of a figure.
Finally the addict is back. Also am I the only one who thinks this figure needs to be kept around...just to show if toys weapon firing gimmicks are accurate?
1:20 "This toy is not as bad as anything in my top 5" Alright, that's fine, but if that's the case, why make us sit through 30 seconds of you rewinding the clip at 0:09? Doing that makes us anticipate that Airchanid was gonna be on the list.
+cannonfodder4000 Well the list was completed years ago so probably not, it was to highlight my own regret at saying a toy couldn't be as bad as those 5 anymore, and as I said, it's very close to it.
I got this figure for Christmas in 2012 together with Masterpiece Sideswipe. I spent like 5 minutes on Airachnid and the rest of the day I played with Sideswipe.
last years, the shelf warmers from prime line got 50% sale. there was only two options there: sergeant kup and airachnid. i liked helicopter transformers, but i picked kup instead. looking at this now, it seems i made the right choice.
Ah Airachnid...one of the few figures I've seen that made Peaugh lose his shit in a review XD Had wondered when you would decide to rip this one a new screw hole, and I am not disappointed.
If I had to take a guess, I'd say the second peg was so that other figures could use it. Even though weapon interchanging is not a major gimmick of Transformers, and that no one would ever actually give one character's weapons to another.
I own this toy. Because this was the point where I decided to start giving Transformers a try to give some relief to my Zord addiction that wasn't being met. This, a couple other Prime figures, and a Deluxe Megatron that I hated... and I immediately stopped collecting Transformers toys. That is, until I found out that Combiner Wars was a thing that was going to happen. To be fair, I did end up with a couple Generations toys that I liked in the meantime, Grimlock and Windblade, but it's really Combiner Wars that hooked me on this stuff enough for me to buy a Platinum Predaking and mod it so it can actually have two arms. But yes, this toy sucks and I hate it and it only stays on my shelf because I want to show my support to getting new female Transformers. Not that Hasbro can see my shelf, it's just a thing I do.
yay its back... o and 00:20 to 00:30 we heard you the first time!.. now i'm actually gonna watch the episode and find out if its really that bad... THE COCKPIT SEAT IS MOLDED TO THE BACK OF THE HEAD??? WHAT WHERE THEY THINKING *face-palm* this cant get any worse... 9 SPIDER LEGS... O.O WTH i'm not wondering how they know how to tie their shoe's... more like do they know how to open their eyes in the morning?.. oh wait they obviously dident
The most insulting part is to get her into an aproximation of her "third" spider mode you'll need to buy another airachnid and remove to rotos and peg them in to her sides.
I thought that the TFP toys were developed after the show (which admittedly is an oddity since up until then the toys either were developed first or simultaneously)
I wanna see a third party kit for this toy. A good start would be a replacement for the rotor blade (as it easily and intentionally comes off) that looks more like the blades of a helicopter, but can split into opposable spider legs. They don't have to hold her weight, they just have to have the look.
The day I bought this figure was the SAME day she broke ..... her right thigh ball joint sheared off as I transformed her for the first time. I stuffed her back in the packaging, took her back to the store, said what my problem was, got an exchange for Bumblebee instead.
My friend got this one and then had his parents get really mad at him cause the weapon holes in the hands made him think to put her in a t-pose next to the crucifix on their mantle.
I've never really seen the show, so I can't say much about the vehicle mode, but I guess the paint on the blades was wrong. With that said, I don't really see many options how they could've done the spider legs, other than making each of those little pieces moveable on the blade itself. While I can say that about the vehicle mode, the robot mode has zero excuses, those arms... I think the last time I saw something like that was with knockoffs, or with certain movie ones which weren't transformed properly ? That Cockpit gimmick, seriously ?"let's get to movement" the first thing I thought was "how with all those panels blocking it" and wow, it was blocked even more than expected, thought she would have at least some feet or knee movement that somewhat works. I wouldn't say that the defending part was really wrong, even if there are some nice things, this toy has so many flaws that outweight that. Anyone remember the time we had big bulky easy to transform toys ?(armada/energon/part of cybertron) I'd take that stuff any day if it means not getting that, sure it had it's own bad things like Hotshot, but those offer at least some playability for the intented group. I kinda heard Airachnid being infamous for being bad, but that was a bit after my time as collector so I never fully saw it until now. I'll just say that this creates some competition to Titanium Megatron.
What's even sillier than a helicopter with bright purple spider legs and tennis rackets on the sides? Whatever the hell SG Thundercracker has going back there.
The review that's been inevitable since the upscaled Bumblebee, when he flat-out told us he was gonna do her because of the Legion Toy's improved engineering. Also, while Airachnid may have started out a good character, she wasn't used very well after her initial introduction. Her most meaningful actions post-introduction were killing Breakdown (okay, badass) and charming the Insecticons (because spiders are known for charming beetles...). Then they basically wrote her out of the show.
another thing i dont get is those stingers, they are not, they are the "nullrays" knockout presented to starscream, for replacing his arm, so they dont even belong to her
5:39 or she looks like a robotic scorpion which suits the name airachnid, because scorpions and spiders are both arachnids. kinda clever if you look at it that way. still a shitty figure all around though.
Not to mention that the rotor doesn't stick into the cockpit well at all (not that I still have the rotor or anything....stupid movers managing to lose it somewhere. Replaced it with a pipe cleaner)
I honestly feel she should've been a voyager class figure, maybe then they could've had their precious opening cockpit AND the proper engineering to actually have decent arms and maybe even her spider-walker mode
"She could fall over just from the dust accumulating on her."
At this point in the video, I turn to my Transformers cabinet to see Airachnid having fallen back into Prime FE Starscream, who, in turn, has fallen into Prime Dreadwing.
