Nitric acid from air (Birkeland Eyde Reactor)

- This is a laboratory scale birkeland eyde reactor. It is used to make nitric acid from just air, water and electricity. Because I do not plan on doing any experiment with nitric acid I just wanted to show you that it works and I am not going to concentrate the acid.

Done that rx myself, back in the day. Tracked the progress with litmus paper. For those that might be interested, the Country of Norway made quite a lot of $ in this reaction as it had copious amounts of hydroelectric dams so that the energy to do this reaction was almost free. And they made industrial fertilizers and such. Starting from about 1900 on. That's the deal with chemistry, quite often, pulling profit out of thin air. Literally so in this case.
Why don't we see chemical companies building more power plants? seems like they would be the ones with the strongest motivation to do it when utilities and governments drag their feet?
Probably way more work than just buying the electricity
@@THYZOID also don't forget - that big concerns are often the same, just working under different agencies.
@@overengineer7691 When you're good at one thing it's freqently good to focus on what your good at.
You have finite resources to work with, time and money. So if the power plant and chemical company both cost the same, why buy or build half of both if that's all you can afford
And, both chemical production and producing energy is freqently cheaper to do it on a large scale, especially with power freqently being more than what a chemical company would need. And finally, electrical energy is easilly transported. And sometimes it may be preferential to locate a chemical company closer to other resources or closer to the client or more buisness friendly area.
Nice! I used a near identical setup in my video covering this.
Great vid! Thanks
Thank you
Outstanding demo!!
Great work good buddy
that jackob's ladder looks STUNNING
Sure, maybe it’s not the fastest or the most efficient way to make nitric acid, but this method also makes you feel like a mad scientist in a Frankenstein movie. How often in chemistry do you get to flip a switch and yell, “It’s ALIVE!!”
cool
Recently thought about adding baffles to the gas tube. Should increase dwell time considerably. Gas travels sideways slower then up. Ive also thought maybe have it like the SO2 collectors build a kind of reflux tower that bubbles and mists the gas over and over. Hilariously i think a bong would work to collect gas. 😂💨😶🌫️ just cant seem to find a glass to tube adapter at the smoke shop 😂.
I would guess this is far less efficient than the chemical method using nitrate salts. But it all depends on the cost of electricity vs the cost of nitrates and sulfuric (or hydrochloric) acid. Still it's good to have many ways to do the same thing
And the availability of nitrates. Water, air and electricity is available everywhere.
Hmm: another use for my $5 neon sign transformer bought at a Goodwill. Already made a tall Jacob’s Ladder with it. I’m tired of just making ozone water disinfectant with it! 😄😄👍🏼
Current is less your arc should be like a candle 🕯️ flame i have tried with different arcs and understood that high current is very important in this process
Still like to watch this from time to time.... just blows my mind.
Ammonia is too hard to do it this simply I bet, other than heating copper mesh. Never saw a good one though
Mysteriusbhoice made a good one using gas fireplace catalyst.
Besser :D
I would suggest a few different things if you wanted higher efficiency.
One would be using an hydrogen peroxide solution in stead of straight water, and chill it for increased solubility. Second is recirculate the escaped NO back into the reactor.
But that's only if you wanted to improve the experiment itself, which noone would just to get some acid, because the process is just too expensive.
Cool! Where did you get the transformer?
I ordered it from eBay

How much do I need to produce 100 liters of nitric acid per day
Hello! I was wondering if the acid that forms will attack plastic, because i wanted to use a plastic air bubbler and a plastic cap to spread the gas to other flasks once it reacted with the water in one. Do you think i can do that or do i have to find glassware?
It depends on the concentration. There are tables for chemical resistance of various plastics on the web.
@@THYZOID thanks!
@@THYZOID Danke!
Is the volume of the reactor critical, I have a much smaller bulb and there is a slight brown tint but after a full day 8 hrs the water had no reaction with baking soda so I’m doing something wrong
The volume is nearly irrelevant
Is it possible to use nonlethal voltage like in an arc lighter to make nitric acid?
I wouldn’t call the voltage of an arc lighter nonverbal but yes. The arc should be hot enough for it to work. It won’t be as efficient but it will work
Hi thanks for video , I tried to make nitric acid by Ostwald process using copper catalyst instead of platinum but I failed can you make video about it?
Planned it for the future
@@THYZOID cant wait for that 🤩
Hey, gutes Video.
In Deutschland? 3% 😄
Concentration % of the acid
Is it any different if using pure O2 and N gas instead air?
The yield can be increased by altering the ratio.
Would it be more efficient to bubble through h2o2
Yes
Would a solid state transformer work for this kind of project?
I unfortunately cannot answer that question for it is not my area of expertise. But what I can tell you is that it would work if the arc is hot enough.
If you mean the bulky 50Hz transformer then yes but a normal transformer needs to be current limited or you trip the fuse. The easiest transformer would be a neontransformer that is normaly rated for short circuit because arc = short circuit. Oh as far as I have read about that ostwald process should give the best efficency right ?
what yield per kWh are you getting?
Little. That is a very inefficient process. But it is available everywhere.
Nano bubbles generation may further reduce the size of the bubbles which increases the surface area or volume of the bubbles, and increases the time the bubbles stay suspended, and synergistically both work together to increase the absorption from the gas.
Is it energy efficient?
It isn’t. Industrially this process was abandoned because better processes were discovered.
@@THYZOID
Thank you. What if we can use solar power? Is it still inefficient?
If you have solar you can run it as long as you like without caring about power consumption. It will still be as efficient as before but you basically get the power for free.
Approximately how much nitric acid?
Around 20ml of 100% HNO3 in 24 hours. This setup isn’t really that effective. Im gonna try a new and more effective setup in the future.
thanks brother
I guess you need much more current to make much more in a short time. It´s hard to find those cheap I can understand that.
@@THYZOID Hello. "20ml of 100% HNO3 in 24 hours". Could you tell me the Power of your Transformer?
@@THYZOID You can't get 100% That would be anhydrous. I was wondering how strong you could make it. In Germany the legal limit is 3% as far as I know. Which is useless :/
Also great channel. Just discovered it :)
isnt nitrous acid also formed?
Nitrous acid degrades into Nitric acid and nitrogen monoxide rather quickly when the solution is not cooled down.
God loves you and wants you to come to Him. Go to Jesus and keep up the good work
Du bist doch deutsch :)
