Make a Nafion Divided Membrane Cell for Electrolysis

  • In this video we make a two compartment electrolysis cell divided with a Nafion membrane.
Ever wish you could filter just one ion? Nafion is an ionic polymer or "ionomer" that has sulfonate functional groups as part of it's PTFE structure. These sulfonate groups make the nafion permeable to cations, very similar to cationic ion exchange resin. Cations can hop from sulfonate group to sulfonate group and transfer through the membrane. Anions are blocked.
So if we apply an electric field we can force cations through the membrane and separate them from anions.
In this video we make a single compartment membrane cell that we'll use in a future video to make sodium hydroxide from sodium bicarbonate.

I worked in a 3 Megawatt Chlor-alkali plant making bleach from sea-salt. We used 60 1-meter square Nafion 969 membranes (x2....so 120 ($300k circa 1998) to only allow sodium ions through, well sort of. The difficulty other positive metal ions would cause issues mainly calcium and magnesium...most of the plant was dedicated to metals removal way before the membrane cell stack down to sub 20 ppb levels using to finish 3 ion exchange columns. Also, silica was also an issue and we needed to run a desilisizer on town water to use for process water or the silica would form a blinding gel coating and cause all kinds of issues. Nothing like throwing a vacuum breaker on a 14.4kV main, breathing various levels of chlorine gas depending on what leak where (All PVC/CPVC)...as well as lightning igniting our hydrogen stack....which just blew it off into the air. Those fun days! The electrodes were stainless with a nickel oxide coating (apparently needed). Just make sure you consider the heat generated in the chlorine gas / Sodium hydroxide reactor ...the reaction itself is exothermic and takes a lot of cooling, to the point where if there is none it will run away and melt whatever has the lowest melting point!!!
