Make a Nafion Divided Membrane Cell for Electrolysis
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 5 июн 2024
- In this video we make a two compartment electrolysis cell divided with a Nafion membrane.
Ever wish you could filter just one ion? Nafion is an ionic polymer or "ionomer" that has sulfonate functional groups as part of it's PTFE structure. These sulfonate groups make the nafion permeable to cations, very similar to cationic ion exchange resin. Cations can hop from sulfonate group to sulfonate group and transfer through the membrane. Anions are blocked.
So if we apply an electric field we can force cations through the membrane and separate them from anions.
In this video we make a single compartment membrane cell that we'll use in a future video to make sodium hydroxide from sodium bicarbonate.

My video posting rate will continue to be extremely erratic. But i hope to continue nonetheless.
Thanks for still being there.
Nice to see you back. Hope to continue seeing you in the future.
Always happy to be here!
good to se your stil making video's.. how is it going with you? hope everything is ok.. i know your worked on getting a job.
Hi, we do miss your videos, but are very grateful for the time you can share with us. I hope that the reasons for you being busy are good ones.
Any and all uploads are greatly appreciated.
With a mercury cathode cell metal ions are able to pass through the mercury but the non metal cannot. This does something similar but no toxic heavy metal. Awesome!
When Cody's in the comments you know it's a good video !
Can you use a lithium battery cell separator or the ions are incorrect size?
Mercury isn't toxic. You can put it in your mouth and splash around in a pool full of it with no permanent brain damage.
@@NicolasBana yea you are right
please update mercury chatode for separating palladium with non metals contaminant Cody's
You know you miss this guy when just his intro phrase brings a smile to your face!
Oof.
"Greetings fellow nurds"
I miss the 'WARNING!' intro (the disclaimer). When you heard that, you could be assured that chemistry involving some interesting chemicals would feature in the video.
I was like MUST WATCH NOW
How true!
I wrote about this RUclips channel as a motivation source for going into chemistry when applying to university. I'm now a second-year chemistry student at Oxford University. Thank you so much NurdRage 🙏🏼
Damn son!
I never got into uni
Maths isnt my strong point and well, you tend to need it
I also attributed my interest and choice of study being chemistry to NurdRage!

Same, now I'm first year in my university.
What an absolute king
Missed your videos! Glad to see you're okay!
It is 2022 and NurdRage still lives
I remember subbing when I was 16, I'm reaching 29, holy hell it's been quite the ride
This youtube channel was part of the reason that I studied physical Chemistry and now work as a lead Chemist in a private aerospace company. Thanks NurdRage for sticking around, good to see that you are still posting.
The return of the king! Probably some of the first chemistry videos I ever watched on the internet, and while I don't actively work in a chemistry-related field now, this channel played a major part in fostering my passion for science in general. Always happy to see a new NurdRage video.
had a failed synthesis earlier today using up all of my reagents and this is really improving my mood! nurdrage videos are the best!
@@cvspvr lies, he was actually drawing grimace on all of his glassware
This footage may be 10 years old, but it's not the oldest I've seen. Been loving your channel for 13 years.
We missed you man!!🥺
Holy cow he's back.
Finally some NurdRage
Dont ever leave us again we need you!
I missed you so much
A day with a NurdRage video is always a good day. :)
I'm here for the air sponsorship.
Holy shit !!! Youre alive !!! I missed you !
Please make a Oleum synthesis video ... i just spent a small fortune on it and am dying for an efficient way to make it .
A lack of videos like your has had me feeling sad lately. I missed your videos. They are a breath of fresh air in this current climate that lacks quality of videos like your videos. Please make more!
Started watching your videos when I was on the first year of my undergrad course in chem, 6 years later and an almost masters done, your videos still make me click right away. Kudos!
Glad to see you're alright. Thanks for the upload!
this is the first time i really fell that i understand nafion membranes mechanics! thank you!
Really missed your Videos. Me and my coworkers remade your Natrium Video in our Training, because our teacher liked the journey so much.
I saw uploaded 23 minutes ago and thought “oh man I’ve got to update my phone, the date and time is screwy!”
I was so excited to see it wasn’t a mistake! Great to have you back!
Bought time, I've been waiting for this video on...whatever you're making.
Electrosynthesis, nearly forgotten topic...
By the way, it's nice to see your uploads again.
Oh how I've missed this. Was just thinking about how much I missed these videos the other day.
Long live NURDRAGE
nice to hear from you again. Thanks for still being here.
Just the fact that this guy is out there roaming the internet makes me a little happier. Keep doing your thing man, may the electromagnetic force be with you.
Wow!! Welcome back fellow nurd!!
welcome back, i was worried that someone found you and you had to go even deeper into hiding
Nurd Rage,
Glad to see that you are still around…look forward to seeing what comes next
Good to see you back from the void. Hopefully you get to perform the reaction you mentioned now that you've shown us the archived footage
holycrap you're back!
missed this channel so much, im still re-watching old videos
Just in time to watch it with my tea. Glad to see uploads again!
Good to see you back from the void. Hopefully we'll see more soon.
Hearing that intro chime gave me a serious wave of nostalgia...
*I have used common "Tyvek", the kind houses are wrapped in as a water barrier. It's cheaper than dirt to buy and does just about as good as Nafion.*
WELCOME BACK! Its been a while but good to see you back :)
I remember stumbling upon your channel while I was in secondary school and getting fascinated with the amateur approach. And then I was there when you perfected the amateur production of metallic sodium with tea tree oil. Keep on trucking, good sir.
Oh my god welcome back, Chem Master! ❤️ your works. Also Electrochemistry is my most favourite part of chemistry
Great to see you back!!
I knew youtube upload times were high, but ten years is outrageous!
You know how I have longed for him for a comeback
I completely forgot i was still subscribed to this channel. The channel name alone took me back in time lol omg 😱
Welcome back! Always delightful to see a video from you, no matter how much time between. Thank you for bringing science to RUclips, as always.
Very happy to see another post from you ☺️
I’ve always loved your work.
I can only wonder what Scrap Science(aka 'I can solve all chemistry with electricity') could do with some of this stuff.. Rather than his normal collection of broken terracotta pot cells. :)
Super stoked to see a new NurdRage video!
I'm happy to know this man is still alive.
Nice to see you back!
HOLY MOTHER OF GOD HE DID IT
HE POSTED ANOTHER VIDEO
Great to see you back!
Holy moley dude it's been a while!
Nurd! Great to hear you again!
Good to see you're still around and hopefully doing well!
So glad to hear you are alive!
So good to see a new production.
So happy to have you back
Truly wonderful to see another video from you. I hope the future brings you more chances to do what you love and share it with us! Thanks for all the videos, past, present, and future! :)
Very happy to see a new NR video.
NurdRage videos are always great
Happy to see another video!
I am glad to see you back
Glad you are back
Holy shit, I was looking for cheap nafion membranes a few days ago and now the man himself releases a video about it.
By the way, this channel is what inspired me to become a chemist. I now work for Agilent and I love my job.
I am extremely happy that you are back to posting! You are the reason I got into chemistry so long ago. hope all is well!
11 month break, I thought something ... nasty happened, welcome back matey !!
So many reactions I tried from this channel. Glad he's back
Glad to see that your back my dude
Whoa a NurdRage video. Heck yeah!
welcome back! its been ages, I love your videos, my daughter wants be a chemist because of watching your videos with me.
Ayyy! Nice to see you post again!
Welcome Back :) this video just sparked a few great ideas thanks NurdRage.
Love to see this channel still being semi active! Miss these videos!
Hell yeah!!! Nice to see u again!
Good to see you back Dr.
Well bugger me sideways with a shovel! Welcome back!
Instead of a 👍 , RUclips needs a ‽ For comments like that!
Damn. That call-out in the beginning was deep. I remember being in 2008 or 9 and trying to binge every video you made back then cus they were so good. Wasn't even 10 then and didn't know shit for dick abt anything but loved seeing what the world could do.
It's good to have you back.
YAAYY NERD RAGE IS BACK AFTER 1 year of gone missing 🎉🎉🎉
So glad for new videos
Thanks for making a video of a "hands-on" experience with Nafion. If you read about Nafion, it's this kind of super expensive, super fragile thing and this video helps making it more approachable.
I'm so glad that you're fine and back
You're always welcomed back King. Looking forward to the next upload
Woah! Good to see you back.
thank you for posting
The world is healed he uploaded
No way u actually uploaded again i thought they got you.Keep it up though really entertaining
New theory. NurdRage and Samonellas Academy are the same people.
glad to see a new video
Nice you are back!
I loved watching your videos growing up as a kid, now as a 19 year old perusing a 3rd class power engineering ticket i still love your videos and it brings a smile to my face any day I see a new post from you. I truly hope you post more soon. Thanks for posting again
The king returns.
welcome back hope you can keep posting
Ya chem boy is back!
I searched your channel to show my chem students yesterday, now you live XD
I worked in a 3 Megawatt Chlor-alkali plant making bleach from sea-salt. We used 60 1-meter square Nafion 969 membranes (x2....so 120 ($300k circa 1998) to only allow sodium ions through, well sort of. The difficulty other positive metal ions would cause issues mainly calcium and magnesium...most of the plant was dedicated to metals removal way before the membrane cell stack down to sub 20 ppb levels using to finish 3 ion exchange columns. Also, silica was also an issue and we needed to run a desilisizer on town water to use for process water or the silica would form a blinding gel coating and cause all kinds of issues. Nothing like throwing a vacuum breaker on a 14.4kV main, breathing various levels of chlorine gas depending on what leak where (All PVC/CPVC)...as well as lightning igniting our hydrogen stack....which just blew it off into the air. Those fun days! The electrodes were stainless with a nickel oxide coating (apparently needed). Just make sure you consider the heat generated in the chlorine gas / Sodium hydroxide reactor ...the reaction itself is exothermic and takes a lot of cooling, to the point where if there is none it will run away and melt whatever has the lowest melting point!!!
The king has returned!
