- OFFGRID with REMOTE INDIGENOUS TRIBE | SAILING AFRICA
Welcome back! If you are new here, we are a sailing family who have recently arrived in East Africa after crossing the Indian Ocean in our floating home. Today we find ourselves heading inland, across most of Northern Tanzania to the remote Lake Eyasi basin, to spend an incredible, yet overwhelming three days with Tanzanias oldest indigenous tribe, the Datoga people. This tribe live a completely off grid traditional lifestyle. We are pinching ourselves that we're here in what can only be described as a David Attenborough type setting. As we join the tribes people in celebration for their traditional, sacred funeral ceremonies, called Bung'eda.

I am South African and i have been following the cruising kiwis for a number of years now, but i absolutely appreciate how you showed the beauty and humanity in their ceremonies and culture.
Please come to South Africa next
Thank you very much for your time Paul!
Wow wow wow
Glad you emitted it Marion. You're all caught up!😊🥰
Amazing adventure, it's definitely something money can't buy.
And also, I'm impressed how calm Hanna was the whole time there.
Yeah she handled herself extremely well.
Your videos are always so well done. Thank you for your efforts. They are appreciated.
Glad you like them!
Beautiful episode teaching us something completely new.
See ya soon!
I thought your last was my favorite episode, this one surpassed it. Well done. Maybe when you are done, you could put these together for a special extended episode.
@@OnTheFlipSide That’s a great idea. There are so many things we could have added to this episode but didn’t want to bog everyone down with too many Datoga facts. I will probably do a number of shorts about the stuff we left out.
I agree with @OnTheFlipSide, this series can absolutely be compiled into a full documentary. The footage is stunning the music is amazing and Rachael's editing and narrating give goose bumps all the way through the episode. I can't express in words how amazing these videos are!
Agreed.
Indeed you should!
beautiful ceremony to honor the respected man with 9 wives and 51 children... this is why Crusing Kiwis embarked on a journey in exploring cultures, tasting strange cuisine, drinking fermented "beer" and jumping beans, Ivan will have lots of stories to tell his grandkids...what a great gift of living and exploring the wonders of our little blue planet,
Thank you Chao, we feel so fortunate to have had this experience with these people. Great memories indeed.
👌
What a beautiful experience! You saw and participated in something people rarely see. Incredible.
Wow, wow, wow, so special.
Thank you Faye.
Wonderful, so lovely to be allowed to be with this tribe at such a family time. What memories Hanne will take back with her 🥰
@@rosiehamilton4500 yes indeed. Hannah joined us at a great time. Not a regular summer break for that girl.
One of my favourite episodes ever. Well done Rach. Amazing memories from that experience.
@@SailingSeahorse2025 Thanks Clint. You would have loved it and they would have loved meeting Ollie.
What a privilege for y’all to be able to witness and participate in this special ritual. Great episode and what a follow up to the last episode. Great work and thanks for bring us along !!
@@smith4tx2001 Thanks Ricky. It was a labour of love this week. I really wanted to share the extraordinary experience we had with the Datoga tribe. I hope I did the them justice.
What an adventure!!!
Yes it really was. Something very special to experience.
Another great episode/documentary! Here sitting behind my PC I even feel privileged to watch it. Splendid!
Glad you enjoyed it Elto!
Very national Geographic. Very interesting
Thanks Jonathan
Incredible. Just so eye opening and beautiful to watch. Well done Josh for making this happen for these guys.
@@leezettb thanks Lee.👍
Amazing episode, such a special experience. Thank you for sharing this.
Glad you enjoyed it Sandra!
I hope Hannah got some counseling after this visit😳🙂
@@lozzinozz8318 Hannah laughed it off at first, but throughout Tanzania, being young, pretty, white and female has brought Hannah an awful lot of unsolicited attention.
@@lozzinozz8318 , a conversation certainly needed to be had to make sure she wasn't traumatized. Sometimes we laugh when we're quite disturbed. I know I've done that.
Poor Hannah! Though, I'm sure the experience, all in all, was way worth it!!
The serotonin hit watching you guys is a gift from afar. Just brilliant. Love from Scotland ❤❤❤
Thank you very much. What part of Scotland? Love the accent, assuming you're Scottish😊
@@TheCruisingKiwis yes I'm Scottish born and bred. Was born in wick caithness and now live in keith moray.
More of this please
What an awesome experience.
Thanks Kerry
Amazing journey. Thank you for sharing this
Glad you enjoyed it!
Beautiful! Thanks for sharing!!
@@Lezliecns Thank you
Thank you so much What an honour to view and for you to be accepted in at such an important time
Thank you Cathie, we were so grateful for the opportunity.
Amazing thank you so much

You are so welcome Rob!
What an amazing experience!!
It truly was.
Fascinating!! Great video footage...
@@krishender thank you Kris.
Excellent episode! Rachel, they will never forget you. Every time they see the scars you left behind, haha. 😂😉
@@hossjulia come the rainy season all trace of my faux pas will be gone. The crowds that gathered, to watch this heroic rescue, will scratch their heads and wonder did it really happen, could anyone be that stupid?
Wow another fantastic episode thanks
Thanks John
Congratulation on your arrival to East Africa! Enjoy, Enjoy, Enjoy!
Thank you. We love it here!
Very enjoyable video and totally fascinating ceremony! Such a precious and rare experience. I envy you guys for this one!
To experience 1/100th of what you guys have during all your travels would fill up anyone's dance card.
I saw where putting together a documentary episode was suggested.
I say move all of your different cultural related material to the cloud or separate (and dedicated) hard drive.
Your editing is superb Rachel. Serious Hollywood type superb.
Would be something to keep you busy if you ever take a short break from sailing, or when you guys hang up your boat hooks for good.
Give old David A. a run for his money 😊
Yes!!
When we reflect on these recent years how much we've seen and done together, it gives cause to an incredible sense of gratitude. If time permits yes would love to put this idea to the air.
So awesome
Thanks Mark
What an experience....best to you all! Take care and stay safe!
Thank you! Will do!
Great episode. Well presented. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it Dennis.
What an extraordinary experience. Something to look back on for the rest of your lives as a once in a lifetime opportunity. So thankful you were welcomed in and could share it all with us
Yeah we were so lucky with timing and opportunity. Thanks Sam.
Wow, enthralling right through. Well done.
Thank you kindly Stuart!
Very interesting, both the Datoga facts (great mourning ceremony, celebrating life!!) and Josh's own history, his first contact with you.
First time big ups wasn't Rob's fault, haha! But it was easy to understand in such an amazing landscape and those mesmerizing flamingos...
Safe journeys, fair winds, Team Hamill!! Even more to Finn in Barcelona!!
Rob was put back on driving duties after that mishap.
That was Really awesome, thank you!
You're very welcome!
You're a hardcase Rob. We laughed our asses off!!! Good episode Rachel.
Are you saying you laughed at my dancing? That's not very nice. 😉
What a groovy, amazing episode. You are bringing new worlds to all of us. Thank you for being so cool.
Thank you very much!
Thank you for a great video. Learning more traditional ways is learning life skills. Congratulations to you all.
Thanks for watching.Colin!
I really love how you have captured this experience and put it together. Beautiful work. I also love your personal approach to it. Thoroughly enjoyed watching this ❤
Thank you so much!
What a truly awesome experience this must have been for all of you and thank you so much for taking us along. This and the first part are a true classic, very well done, Ivan and Hanna both will never forget this time in their lives, I will never forget this, this is what traveling the world and experiencing new cultures is all about. I will of course have to watch both videos over and over to get the best of it all. and yes of course I will be sharing this everywhere that I can. It is a classic that will go on forever in history, very well done. Thank you so much for sharing this with us, I cannot even imagine just how fantastic it must have been to be there and be able to join in with the people there. Thank you so much for taking us all along.
I'm glad you got the same feeling from this vlog that we got from being there and editing the content. It was great timing for Hannah to have joined us at this time, and what a life Ivan is living. These interactions will shape him and stand him in good sted in the future.
This is a very special video. It is such a privilege to be involved in such a ceremony. It was so interesting to watch. You always bring us unusual and unique things in your videos that we would never see ourselves. Thank you so much. Keep well and safe. James.
Glad you enjoyed it James, a rather unique opportunity that we had.
Awesome experience! Does it get any better than meeting and interacting with an indigenous group of people? What a way to learn about other cultures and create lasting memories. It’s also a way for those of us who watch to see how other cultures live. Thank you for your content. Keep it coming!
Thank you Thomas, we were so fortunate to have the opportunity.
Great video. Awesome area. Thanks for sharing.
Our pleasure!
Fantastic video

This is a beautiful video!
Thank you so much!
Wow. That was very special indeed! What a privilege for you all to be aloud to visit during this special time for the local Tribe. Great video footage of how they really live over there.
I hope your extra crew has recovered from the special attention she was paid by some of the older gentlemen!
@@Stevek1969 It really was special.
Hannah is resilient. Though the unsolicited attention she has received, beyond this village, throughout Tanzania has been quite something else.
@@TheCruisingKiwis she could be very rich by the end of ur trip! Even if it is with cows!!
@@Stevek1969 Rich and have many other wive friends as I wouldn't be the first 😂
Once again I must commend Hannah's equanimity and poise -- that man pawing her would elsewhere have drawn disgust and revulsion and, in many parts of the world, an arrest. I was also amused by her comment on her various suitors: "It's only the older guys, not the younger guys." Great episode, guys. Best regards.
P.s.: Barcelona -- my childhood home -- is wonderful in October; with the bulk of the tourist season mostly over he should have a good time. dw.
Yeah she held it together very well, no hissy fits, but did stand firm when needed to.
What an honour to be allowed to participate in such a ceremony! Thank you for showing how accommodating and friendly this tribe actually is! And thank you for not showing the slaughtering of the bull! I understand its their custom, and i can appreciate it but, I'm not sure i could actually watch that happen.
I love seeing your adventures and truly appreciate your openness in accepting every culture you come across!
Did any of the young girls want to marry Ivan? 😂
Thanks Tom. Yeah the butchering was full on. Interestingly, the women did it and spent many hours doing so. As for Ivan I don't think so but I, Rob, had several flashes from the young women as they wandered past me adjusting their shukas while looking me in the eye. Wasn't quite sure what to make of that and wasn't keen to find out.
Great stuff guys! 😊
@@trevhedges thanks Trev. Not sure if there’s been much chatter on YTSC about the Cruisers Awards but we’ve entered five categories.
@@TheCruisingKiwis ironically them awards don’t recognise our group, we don’t know why, we feel we have helped many many channels, but we are not even invited to join their Facebook page, we don’t know why? We aren’t in competition with any groups or associations, & we even go as far as offering “non compete” handshake agreements to other groups that are sailing or social media platforms.
I sincerely wish you guys well!
Great job on getting stuck! How was the food? Thank you for sharing again. Have safe travels.
Captain was called back to driving duties after that
Well that was a little different. Top Job as usual.
Glad you enjoyed it Aus!
I heard a tractor was driving in circles for days to find those stuck forreigners ...

Beautifully documented. Thank you for sharing 👍
Glad you enjoyed it!
Love you guys! Such an interesting vlog. Hope Hannah is okay after being inappropriately touched. 😢 Safe travels.
Hannah handled herself well, no worries.
Now we can say we've left a permanent dent in Africa, cause those tire marks aren't going anywhere anytime soon 😂
So true, can't wait for the rainy season to flood the lake and remove my mistake.
⛵⛵⛵⛵⛵⛵⛵⛵⛵⛵
😅the definite ups and bogs of Africa. Indescribable visions and experiences. As for home brews....I always wonder what could be in them 😅. Very brave of you to try and do so without offending😶
Yeah a tricky one but if they drink it then do can we
Thank you for the update Rachel!!!😊
I think you guys found the wrong way to "immerse" yourself in the culture. 😅
Ha yeah but of a muck up there.
Yep same .. I thought your last episode was fantastic but this one was phenomenal..but i have a question .. if he died a year ago wasn’t the body a bit ripe .. or was it already embalmed or something …
@@amandaavery475 once the community agree upon carrying out Bung ‘eda, the body is embalmed and buried, so that happened soon after his death. Then over the following twelve months, certain rituals and ceremonies are observed. The summit of the mud pyramid (the elder is in the ground the pyramid is built over the grave) is the final ritual.
young rob is a bit of a handsome devil!
Thanks Mum😉😆😊😊
Sorry to rain on their parade but 51 children is not an accomplishment it is something I avoided by being responsible. As it is this lack of responsibility plays out in daily life here in the US. The facts, and the facts only.
@@cestmoi1262 Different culture different rules. Only a wealthy man can afford so many children. The kids are put to work early looking after the cattle, which is where the family fortune lays. The tribe lack the physical and mental ailments that plague the western world.
@@TheCruisingKiwis"Andere Laender andere Sitten" and one might think it isn't fair to compare it to the deplorable state of single family parents in the US for a certain group especially but I believe there is a fundamental thinking that links us back to previous generations as evidenced by the sunglasses and baseball caps at the tribal dance.
For better or for worse you recorded what you saw and maybe that is most important of all.
@cestmoi1262 I'm not quite sure what you're saying here or what the caps and sunnies have to do with responsibility. This tribe are not perfect. However, being responsible for their family and community is something that is foremost in their lives. There is virtually no pregnancy out of wedlock as it is completely frowned upon and punished. But if it happens, the child is reared by an uncle and his wife. Their number one rule is to protect the family, no one gets left behind.
And no one is concerned about their pronouns.
@@TheCruisingKiwis Just to clarify (hopefully) it is commendable that the tribe has such high standards --- sorely missing in our "modern" society. Still, 50 children from one person is not acceptable in my opinion and that includes Elon M. I am looking for the source of why certain groups have unique opinions/behavior towards a mentality that sets them apart from others. Some 20 years ago I came across a report from Washington DC where a group of immune from prosecution diplomats from one country accumulated over 350 parking tickets --- none of them paid for. The opposite were diplomats (I believe Finland) who had 8 parking tickets and all 8 of them paid! what! Different strokes for different folks?
The second part (caps & sunglasses) I stated poorly. We see the start of modern influences while attending ancient rituals. Pretty soon this will be offered for exchange of money and the base meaning is lost.
Now, your last comment about no concern about pronouns is absolutely encouraging. There seems to be hope coming from places that we generally don't consider.
@cestmoi1262 I'm enjoying this exchange and I recognise the angle that you are coming from. However, I don't think you can compare this indigenous, rural tribe to western culture. They have two things that they value most, family and cattle. A rich man can have 1000 cows. If he does, he needs a large family to help herd them. The Datoga are fiercely independent and take no money from the government to help raise their children (although a recent development has a charity educating some of the young girls, but that's another story). No one suffers from depression, there is no jealousy between wives, and they all take responsibility for their actions, which makes for a strong community. Africa and America are like chalk and cheese in terms of lifestyle and attitude. Yes, there are elements of modern apparel, there were quite a few cell phones too.
