It’s sad that Nissan’s image has gone so downhill (see BAE for reference) because they really do make decent mainstream cars again. The current Sentra is a good car for many people, and there really isn’t anything inherently wrong with it.

The only issues I can think of when Nissan comes to mind is how dated their luxury cars look by comparison, and the fact that their JATCO CVT transmissions are really good in their hybrids, but are absolute dog in ICE-only models with no explanation as to why that is.

    • @ralkia

I think Nissan's problem is them not really doing anything to change/distinguish their brand image since it got damaged. They've always been a reasonably solid option as far as reliability goes, but that CVT issue and the CEO controversy really killed their reputation. There's also the "insane altima with half a bumper" stereotypes because that entire segment of Nissan's cars are intended for poorer buyers/lower credit scores.
They're also just kind of a "boring" brand in a lot of people's eyes. Their economy sedans are middling in comparison to Toyota and Honda for the same price. The sports cars they sell have been the same platforms since the early 2000s except the R35, which is not actually that popular among other options for 100k+ (zero people in the USA will pick that over something more "luxury" like a Corvette or Porsche unless they really like JDM cars)
^It may be true that a lot of people don't care about these factors, but everyone hated on Toyota for years for being "boring beige car builders" until they introduced their new GR lineup. I love Nissan as a brand and wish they could do better, but the car market is a really fickle beast and it's hard to know what will make consumers buy

Huge props to Nissan for keeping gloss black in the interior to an absolute minimum, looks like it's only around the shifter. I wish Honda had that sort of restraint before flooding the regular Civic interior with gloss black, as well as Mazda with the Mazda 3, and Toyota with the GR Corolla

I have a 2020 Sentra SV trim and love it! I agree that it handles surprisingly well for a basic compact sedan. It's also quiet, comfortable, and gets great highway MPG. Next time you drive a Sentra, Altima, or other CVT Nissan look at the back of the shift knob, near its base. You should see what looks like a white minus sign. It's a sport mode button! "Ds" will display on the instruments and the car will hold revs higher, feels better cornering and provides some engine braking.

Kudos to Nissan for putting in the effort to make something on the affordable end of the spectrum that still is a nice fun to drive package. My hope is that these cars are "gateway" cars as we build another generation of enthusiasts. My ulterior motive? The more enthusiasts, the more demand for more driver focused cars for the older generation too! Keep 'em coming. In my day, it was the second gen Prelude, VW GTI and Scirroci, Celica, etc. . This Sentra, with 4 doors, might suffice for young folks who might NEED the 4 doors, but don't want sluggish steering or to corner on their door handles. Very refreshing.

Great Review! This Sentra provides tremendous value for what you get. I had a used 1984 Nissan 200SX hatchback coupe back in 1987-1990 when in college. A wedge shape sporty design with sloping hatch back. Light blue paint and light blue fabric/velour upholstery - A beautiful color combo. Same DNA as the Sentra today - compact, affordable, fuel efferent, sporty and fun. I loved that car. Very reliable little Nissan. I like this new Sentra too!

  • @JTube571
    @JTube571 9 месяцев назад +45

That's a new color too for '24. I have one of these in SV trim as a lease vehicle and have been averaging ~40 mpg every tank. Individual trips as high as 46-47. Putting around town it accelerates nicely without needing too much throttle, CVT keeps the RPM's around 2k. As far as an A to B commuter car, this is probably the best Sentra that we've had in ~20 years. Unfortunately the great chassis and handling is wasted without a performance model. Even a slightly spicy one equivalent to an Elantra N-Line or Civic Si is badly needed. A revived SE-R with ~200hp and a full on Nismo model with ~300hp would be amazing...

@@mahinahmed2316 so far on this one, no issues. I had a '22 before this that had a weird issue with going into some sort of limp mode if it had to accelerate up a steep hill with cruise control active. Would throw a few lights and the cruise wouldn't work anymore. Also felt like the car wouldn't accelerate properly. But if I stopped the car, shut it off, opened and closed the drivers door, then restarted the car it would clear everything and act normal. As usual the dealership couldn't replicate the issue.

I just read an article that stated Nissan is in the works of producing a new 2024 Sentra Nismo DET with 6 speed manual, which I believe they may increase the output of the engine as well. Nonetheless, it seems they may be going back to their traditional roots of zippy cars that are fun to drive.

Not necessarily, rumors are they are going back to their roots of making zippy cars with manual transmissions. For instance, they are currently developing a 2024 Nissan Sentra Nismo that has a 6 speed manual, which I would highly favor over the CVT (I generally hate CVTs though as they are not designed for reliability purposes, only to conserve fuel economy (MPG).

I've got a 2021 Sentra SR and absolutely love the thing. Road trip it every couple months and it handles it like a champ. Last trip I took it on was about 900 miles round trip and I averaged 38 MPG for those miles. On the highway I managed almost 50 MPG. I think for those who just want some nice features for the price, and a relatively comfortable driving experience, it's a great option. I'll probably keep mine until it dies honestly.

I myself own a '23 Sentra SR. Pretty much the same car with updated exterior. The one thing I dont like that Nissan did for the Sentra is remove the Fog Lights for the SV-SR trim levels. Those things are pretty great and makes the car look very aggressive.
Also few things to keep on note thats missed in this video is that this car still has Sports Mode (Better Throttle Response). Its that small button by the back of the shift lever. Also, you've mention that when you engage Cruise Control, the digital display automatically switch to the Cruise Control Screen. This can be disabled through settings to on the same screen. I believe its under Cruise Control Settings or Display Settings.
All in all, the car has been good to me. I am in Canada and I have around 30k Kms on the car and still drives good and love how good this car is compared to close competitors like the Civic and Corolla at both trim levels. Also, in the Canadian Market, you can get the 2023 Sentra SR in a 6 Speed Manual Tranmission. Not sure about the 2024 in Canada. I will have to look that up myself.

@Jonathan-mp32x Agreed. I'd argue that 2006 was the final year of the classic high quality Camrys. The 2007 model was the beginning of the end of Toyota's famous quality, the oil burning issues on the 2.4 were very bad. Unintended acceleration, and mediocre plastic interior fit and finish. You know Toyota was down bad if the then four year-old '07 Accord and new '07 Altima had way better interiors than the new '07 Camry.

In the end we're both happy she got the 2023 SR. The new model doesn't look as attractive as the old. The front doesn't have the aggressive look anymore. The Auto Start-stop also completely killed anything the 2024 had going for it. For what they are, they are nice cars. It was cool seeing the new model from a POV. Thanks for the review!

The CVT reliability remains a concern but this CVT seems to drive much better than new CVT's from Honda and Toyota. I have noticed in your videos that Hyundai CVT's are also less drony than H or T. Only time he can remember was when the CVT was damaged in an accident. In my opinion third generation Nissan CVT (2019 Altima, 2020 Sentra + Versa and 2021 Rogue) is about on par with competitors from Honda, Subaru and possibly even Toyota in terms of reliability

The non-linear tac on the newer Nissans drives me nuts! 0-2 then 3,4,5,6,7
I really don't mind the CVT when it acts like a CVT. I spend a lot of time (willingly) behind the wheel of a previous gen Sentra. It's a good little car. Gets incredible gas mileage ... hand calculated it blows the EPA estimates out of the water. It's not fast by any means, but it's not much slower 0-60 than my Mercury Grand Marquis ... The Grand Marquis at least makes cool V8 noises as it wheezes up to 60.
Apart from changing the CVT fluid every 15K miles, maintenance and upkeep is cheap. Parts are super cheap and they're already in junkyards if you need interior panels. The rear twist beam axle isn't going to need alignments constantly. Rear drum brakes work, marginally, for 100K ... not doing calipers and rotors every other year. Actual parking brake with no electronic gizmos. No auto stall feature to ruin the flexplate and starter. Reasonably comfortable with a nice sized back seat.
I hope enough people keep buying these so Nissan continues to make them. They're a great value for someone who needs a daily driver. I don't buy into the CVT problems as long as it's maintained.

I keep seeing orange/black combo's of Nissan's cars and I'm tempted to go and get one, but then remember that Nissan CVT's are absolutely abysmal. If Nissan went to a traditional automatic or made a proper reliable CVT, I'd jump on one in a heartbeat.

There's a couple of channels on YT that focus on the biggest and baddest or the newest 911 or the best Corvette, etc. And those videos are great, but they mean nothing for most people. You make content that applies to most people, that connects with most people and that most people can relate to and use. It's relevant and helpful to what most people are in the market for.
